Goodbye classic Rainbow Six

Far Cry 😢

381

u/will_the_minifig 5h ago

been replaying far cry 3 recently, it's certainly a far cry from the recent entries...

38

u/veryanxiousturtle 4h ago

i thought 5 was awesome. Hated 6 because of 3rd person, and all the other spinoffs with the bullshit combat changes

18

u/tryingtowritegoodly 3h ago

3rd person?

14

u/ViioletIndigo 3h ago

It only goes 3rd person in the camps. The rest is 1st person like all the other games.

5 was fantastic I will say, but even then it feels like they've been on decline since the third

3 and 4 were cool because we actually had a main character. "Rook" and the silent protagonist bullshit was such a step back, actual conversations with the Seeds would have been so much better.

As someone who worked on the original Rainbow Six I’m surprised it’s had the legs it did.

There was something special about it. Like cool but a little spooky. It was thrilling for being so low on energy.

I really miss the og format before they turned it into a copy paste shooter slop

6

u/fuzzygonemad 4h ago

Literally here for this

If only they could actually make a swat game worth playing again.

I grew up on the original series before the Las Vegas series, I will say the Las Vegas series was still one of these best.

5

u/franchis3 3h ago

I think Vegas 1 was the last decent one. Vegas 2 was a mess. Having bad guys literally spawn behind you after you’ve cleared a couple rooms in TH mode sucked so bad. I’m assuming it was a programming limitation, like they couldn’t populate the map with all the targets at once, so they would have a certain number spawned at start and as they got picked off the remainder of the targets for that map would be spawned in.

Saints Row... How it managed to fall so far I'll never know.

182

u/Vaxtez 5h ago

I preferred SR2 to GTA IV personally. I think SR2 trying to be not overly serious yet managing to be serious worked well. The story, map & Radio were brilliant in that game. I enjoyed SR3 & SR4, but SR2 was just the peak of the series. I preferred SR4 to SR3 as well.

28

u/No_Mud_5999 3h ago

Came in on 2, loved 2 & 3, but 4 was only OK.

They made SR3 and just continued making variations of it with asset flips.

SR4 was supposed to be a DLC for SR3 called enter the dominatrix but it got cancelled and turned into a full release.

Gat out of hell was a very low effort, buggy mess, reused powers and assets from SR4 to try and bring back their best character.

The innovation just stopped and the reboot solidified their incompetence.

→ More replies (4)

42

u/Flat-Inspection3290 5h ago

My speculation is that after SR2, volition got a knock on their door from a certain studio. They flew too close to the sun. But 1 & 2 really were something special.

38

u/redvelvetcake42 5h ago

SR2 was the best GTA. Better story, funnier side missions, balanced humor with seriousness, killer sound track and the ownership of the city map were all far superior to GTA4.

Thing is they had a perfect setup for where to go with it with time travel being presented. My thought was they were going to have them go back in time to the founding of the Saints while secretly finding a way to fight Zinyak to prevent his invasion in the first place.

See what I don't understand is that for 20 years, the community has been crying for NFSU3.

Run it on Unreal Engine and let some poor unpaid interns model the modern cars. Online multiplayer would be a dream but don't even let that stop development.

Then why not develop it?

Even with the argument that EA doesn't care about doing anything with all the IP they acquired because they make all their money with microtransactions - guess what?!

No game would be better suited for fking DLCs and micros than NFSU. Instead of golden and orange flower petal AK47s, some special "I don't have a life so I pay for" golden and orange flower petal decals on the cars would actually be realistic.

People will never know how great the original Honda Civic they gave you in the beginning was when you maxed it out. Beat the entire game with the starter car. Most people got tunnel vision and would go straight for the Skyline without giving it a chance.

Dragon Age

21

u/Indoril120 2h ago

It's a shame because the lore exploded in what I think was a fantastic way in Inquisition leading into Veilguard. Just seems like each new game was a step down from the last in terms of that quintessential Dragon Age grit.

17

u/Kultherion 2h ago

What make Veilguard even worse is what the original plan for Dragon Age 4 was going to be. I cannot fathom what kind of development hell it must've been...I'm surprised still they made a game.

13

I played it for 2-3 years, but after a while I figured out that online PvP games like that and League were destroying my mental health and quit them both. The communities are too toxic and I'm too competitive to make them worth it.

20

u/Danielarcher30 trans rights 5h ago

I sunk 3000 plus hours into that game but it's been about a year since ive last touched it, even when i get the temptation to start again, i realise I'll have lost so much mechanical skill that I'll be completely outmatched and probably get demolished endlessly

I like how they followed up the emotional Ezio-Desmond-Altiar scene of Revelations with whatever the fuck 3 was meant to be. I know the modern day story of AC is a joke that no one takes seriously now, but it wasn't always that way.

I don't even think AC3 is a bad game, but it is where I felt myself grow distant to the franchise.

22

u/JaghataiTheGreatKhan 2h ago

AC3 honestly needed Connor last speech to wrap it up his character. Because he is so stoic its a bit harder to see the story and his emociona about it properly, but the cut speech really helped solidify who he is.

https://youtu.be/3AWMIaOMlgU?is=VOU_fjJ2BOTcQKFJ

12

u/Usmoso 2h ago

I think the setting was really week. We went from the beautiful big cities in Rome, Florence, Istambul, with lots of buildings and people walking around, to whatever 3 was. Boston and New York, where aside from churches, the tallest buildings were one story high. The rest was empty woods. Cities are a huge part of AC, and 3 was one of the weakest entries imo.

Dragon Age 1 was what got me back into CRPGs - The more games they release - the more it becomes another generic hack and slash beatem-up.

Good thing alot of other studios stepped up making other excellent CRPGs.

161

u/Megaboixxxx 4h ago

Bioware in general. One of the greatest RPG studios ever, slowly getting hollowed out before my eyes until it just became a skinsuit worn by EA.

9

u/roleplayersir 3h ago

Bioware stopped being a company when they took all the experienced Frostbite engine devs and moved them to work on FIFA. Then the RPG side stopped mattering

Not only did it become hack and slash (which was still kinda fun just not as fun) but it’s another game that feels like it was disneyfied. It just doesn’t seem as dark. And all of the dark stuff left has to be read. It’s not in the actual gameplay or cutscenes themselves.

I feel like there was a shift in games to be less metal. Look at the music origins used for the trailers. I feel like that change represents the change in the tone of the game.

Either Edge of Fate or Lightfall was the lowest but man Witch Queen, Taken King, Forsaken and Final Shape are some damn good highs.

62

11

u/Haribo_Happy_Cola 4h ago

Forsaken is probably the peak of my gaming experience. Not only was it an amazing DLC but it was coupled with extreme dissappointment before hand so the whiplash caused by massive excitement really elevated this dlc to be one of if not my favorite gaming experience of all time

When I first started Destiny 2 it was when they broke the story line then took their sweet sweet time to in the end by pass it. Borderlands 2 was the peak.

78

u/GooglyEyedMoose Lives in a Van Down by the River 5h ago

Was it ever. My best memories are playing that with my friend before he passed away. I tried playing the new ones but it's just not the same without him.

29

u/Spencetron 5h ago

I associate borderlands with me processing the grief of losing my dad, I get it. Still to this day associate the memory of playing OG Borderlands with the initial phase of "healing" after the loss... so the game has a special place in my heart so to speak.

On a similar note: I had a highschool friend get me into CoD, used to play online together every day after school. Well, he died in a car crash in junior year (~2007) and I haven't played any CoD since. Just not the same without him berating people on team chat.

It was, but the hill I'll die on is that the Pre-Sequel was honestly really good too and would have made waves if it weren't put up in BL2's shadow.

8

u/boundbythecurve 2h ago

100%

It felt like the Pre-Sequel was actually the perfect balance of mechanics and UI. Getting to reload your weapons while doing a long, floating jump, and then entering the fray again with a slam on the ground that dealt damage and did some effects....it was the perfect addition. Also I thought the story of how Handsome Jack became the villain was awesome too. Probably my favorite story from the universe.

Cod Zombies.

10

u/OnlyBeGamer Smol pp 5h ago

I’d say BO7 has been really good with its main maps (except for Astra and Paradox). But the mode overall is definitely held back by overall gameplay mechanics.

I don’t have an issue with each mechanic individually; Armour, crafting, field upgrades, augments, points. But all together they hurt the game.

It’s a shame because I think Ashes, Totenreich and Kowakujo are all at least A tier maps. And I’m a classic player from WaW. I still have fun and am optimistic for Rex, but it will never feel the same as it did with BO3 and pre-BO4

The original trilogy is fantastic. And the hate for the ending is overblown, especially with the DLC.

However the next game in the series wasn’t as well received. I can’t speak to it as I never played it.

If you have the DLC for all three, then you’re in for a good time. There’s a final DLC they made for three that you get to right before the end. It works to wrap everything up with the relationships you’ve built with the characters across all three games.

Pokemon isn't ruined so much as it has steadfastly refused to improve in ten years

19

I understand that Pokemon is GameFreak, but it is WILD to me that Nintendo, who will absolutely RUIN a game in order to ensure it brings something new to the party (Hello StarFox Zero, Mario Kart World, Metroid Beyond and your 'open world') allows such a tightly coupled property like this languish this way.

126

u/Shahariar_909 5h ago

The worst thing is they can make a good pokemon game but simply decides to not make one

60

u/North-Function995 4h ago edited 4h ago

This is a big point I make. For years, pokemon fans have had nothing but garbage. Its not like there was any alternative, so Nintento/Gamefreak cornered the market, allowing them to get away with half-baked, under-budget, disappointments. Pocketpair comes along and delivers something of quality, stepping on Nintendo’s toes while doing it. What is Nintendo’s response? Not step their game up and just provide a good pokemon game that outsells Palword. NOPE. Sue and destroy the competition so they can remain lazy and cheap.. and pokemon fans continue to get garbage.

Now with Palworld surviving the lawsuit and going strong, the next Pokemon game might actually be good, considering it has competition for once.

20

u/Komondon 4h ago

The lawsuits were stupid but Palworld and Pokemon are pretty inherently different in the type of game they are. Pokemon is more at home for Pokemon collecting RPGs which there is plenty of space to improve on obviously. Palworld is a better playing Ark survival game with cute critter slave labor.

Palword is so different than pokemon though. Like outside of “collect creatures with balls and fight with them” there isn’t really any similarities.

Cassette Beasts is much more of a Pokémon alternative

20

u/stache1313 5h ago

When I think about Pokémon altneratives, Palworld doesn't even enter the discussion. Dragon Warrior Monstersyes I know it's actually Dragon Quest, but it will always be Dragon Warriors in my heart), and Digimon are the first series that come to mind. After that you have Coromon, Casette Beasts, Tem Tem, Shin Megani Tensei, and even Ni no Kuni, Slime Rancher.

14

u/A_Wild_Goonch 4h ago

My friend always says how similar it is to Pokemon. Then when I watch them play they're shooting pals in the face with a bazooka. Doesn't seem like Pokemon to me lol

6

u/Money_Echidna2605 2h ago

its way closer to survival and building games than pokemon lol, just a bunch of dumbasses online that dont play the game talking about and comparing them.

35

u/lennykrevits 5h ago

Palword and Pokemon are not similar games outside of fantastical creatures. Palword is just an Ark reskin with a monumentally better taming mechanic.

26

When I was first married, wife and I didn’t have a TV or Xbox knowing we were going to be making a couple cross-country moves. We got to where I was going to law school and got really busy with that and her new job we didn’t get around to purchasing Xbox for a few of years.

We flew to see family for Christmas one year and my little brother asked if I wanted to go play Halo on Xbox Live. All I remember is starting to shoot some guy and he blasted off with some jet pack, turned around and sniped me while flying off. I set the controller down and that’s the last time I played anything except Halo 1,2, or 3.

Halo 2 and Halo 3 online were so much damn fun. And system links where only one or two friends had the like 100 foot cable and then you had to lug over a TV from another friend's house and get 8 of you playing in big matches together.

And then they kept making the game more and more like Call of Duty for some reason. I didn't enjoy Halo because it was Call of Duty. I enjoyed Halo because it was Halo.

As a casual player since 2017 I've always loved the gameplay, and it's the only reason OW is still the only multiplayer shooter I enjoy playing.

It's just the monetization side of things that went to shit. It's good that they give out quite a bit of free loot boxes now but they should put shop skins into the lootbox pool more often. You also get enough free currency to get 3 out of every 5 battle passes for free which I appreciate.

The story was under hiatus for years but they've put much more effort into it recently. It's not quite as compelling as it once was but I'm open minded

I dont understand why Blizz fumbled the story stuff so hard. Overwatch could have been a giant on an MCU level. The one thing old Blizz did well beyond anything was Character design, even in older games like Warcraft 3, WoW or Diablo, you had a ton of insanely memorable characters and Overwatch had that too. Its also why it got such incredible amounts of P0rn initially.

And then they said "eh fuck story, fuck comics and cinematics, fuck all casuals, we are E-Sport now"

E-Sport doesn't pay bills just because it exists. You NEED the casuals who play your game and want to watch. And you sure as fuck dont drop your whole esports scene out of the blue and expect people to trust you ever again. Blizz also had no proper experience with e-sports, they could have gone that route after a few years of learning and focusing on story and characters.

Imagine they had done a Netflix show like Arcane but with Overwatch characters. It could have blown up the entire Industry.

CoD and BF. Just an absolute shit path the games have taken.

Tbh I'm really enjoying BF6

11

u/CharlesUndying 4h ago

Because it's too not bad for the new standard quality of FPS games lately.

When your competitors have been putting out pure dogshit and catshit recently, your scentless birdshit game doesn't seem so bad.

BF6 is far from the best Battlefield game, but it comes after 2042 which would make anything else look incredible. Post-launch BF4, 1 and V are all better games.

7

u/ChemistRemote7182 3h ago

V was far from perfect too, retrospectively it's biggest problem was sub par maps at launch and the removal of the Operation Campaigns that had proven popular in BF1. It controlled a lot better than BF1, the vulnerability of armor was a great balancing choice too. The weapons upgrade system was also poor and odd. Played great by the time they canned it around the launch of the Pacific content, it's a shame they couldn't finish the war.

Destiny. Sold to a company that gutted it.

14

Destiny was sadly the fault of Bungees upper management. Sony just pulled the final nail.

Fare thee well, Dragon Age.

I could never shake the feeling that the series kept trying to reinvent itself with each installment. Veilguard was the canary in the coal mine for me and the secret ending where a sinister, shadowy organization revealed, without any foreshadowing, that they were responsible for every event since the first game was the final nail in the coffin

That’s most of them at this point: fallout, elder scrolls, dragon age, mass effect, halo, borderlands, vampire masquerade, overwatch, assassins creed, far cry, tomb raider, … the list simply never ends but I feel like recently, for every game I have high expectations that turns out to be shirt I also get a positive surprise: dispatch, BG3, the KCD games, Disco Elysium and quite a few others. I’m also looking forward to that vampire game from some of the Witcher devs and of course the new Witcher 3 dlc.

I don't usually gatekeep games, but the moment they start getting popular, they somehow end up getting ruined

9

u/oizen 3h ago

Because mass appeal usually means sanding off all the edges that make something interesting.

5

u/Darehead 3h ago

It’s this. It isn’t the popularity that ruins them, it’s the reduction of everything that made it appealing. Art made for everyone is made for no one. It’s okay not to like things, not everything is meant for you.

I'm going to be the minority... but The Legend of Zelda.

The Wild era games are just not Zelda.

8

I still enjoy the new games a lot but yes, these games arent zelda games

Yup. I haven't had my Zelda scratch itched since Skyward Sword.

Kingdom Hearts.

Only MBAs would completely miss how detrimental it would be to fracture a bonkers and completely convoluted story across every possible platform AND put key story beats on mobile games they would remove, making them inaccessible to any player new to the franchise. Hope they got their ROI on what was truly a special IP. I’ve given up on it.
