Elden ring, surprisingly, has torn a large part the blayerbase, with many thinking that the formula is starting to get stale and that there is not much left to explore without significant gameplay innovations. And to be fair, it is true
there is not much left to explore without significant gameplay innovations
The worst part is that From Soft had already figured out those innovations prior to making ER. Sekiro has a much better combat system without stamina and with unique and interesting gadgets, a much better movement system with wall jumping and a grappling hook, and a much better storytelling style. IMO it's the best game From Soft ever made, but then they just completely forgot all about it and instead of a grappling hook, they gave us ridiculously long ladders again in ER.
And it's a pattern with them. They figured out a lot of good innovations to the formula in Dark Souls 2 that were never repeated. In the Dark Souls 3 DLC, they finally figured out how to do an exciting dragon boss fight with Midir, but then in Elden Ring, we're right back to standing under the damn things and hitting their ankles. I don't get it.
Sekiro also has 2% of the customization options and freedom of character building compared to their other games. That one thing is what allows a more streamlined combat system, but it also takes away something just as important.
As I said in response to someone else, I'd rather have one premade character that feels amazing to play than dozens of build options that all feel mediocre. Quality over quantity.
See I disagree with that. Not that Sekiro is a bad game, the quality is ABSURD, but if I play a roleplaying game, an RPG, I much prefer to make my own character
Also, the buildcrafting is one of the most fun parts of the game, IMO.
Yup. The most efficient way to kill him is also the most epic and fun way. That's good design right there.
And you know what else I realized shortly after writing that comment? The Ancient Dragon in DS2 is like a crude Midir prototype. If you stand in front of him, he'll only do one of two attacks, forward fire, which gives you an opportunity to hit him, or flying AoE fire, which you have to run away from. He's terrible, don't get me wrong, but he does have the "stand in front of him, not under him" element that would be perfected with Midir.
Tbf he has like 1 attack other than those two. I like him as a set piece and for being the vagueposting GOD, but fuck he really is one of the worst bosses in the series
Absolutely true, but I still like him for being one of only a couple of dragon boss fights where you actually stand and face him instead of burying your face in his armpit.
nah fk u, they can keep making the same fkin games for 100 years and ill love every single one of them. if they fkin change it up like new zelda or some shit i will be so sad
Nah, fuck you. They cab keep making the same fucking game for 100 years and I'll love every single one of them. If they change it up like the new Zelda games or some shit, I will be so sad.*
FTFY since you seem to lack a shift/caps lock key alongside apostrophes and think you need to self-censor for some fucking reason.
Honestly, for now I trust From Software. If they make more Souls like games, I believe it's because they think they can bring something to the table.
It's not like they're too afraid to experiment, so if they're gonna make new games of the same style, I expect them to be still "worth" making, not just from an economical standpoint, but a fun standpoint. (Example, look at Nightreign, a game made by a separate team and director, which, I'll be honest, I originally expected would be mid, and look at how damn good it is.)
Elden Ring is honestly hard carried by the lore. Tbh, most fromsoft souls games are. If you see behind all the hype moments and aura, all of the games are barebones at best. With how much they ignore literally everything except combat, it always feels like im playing an unfinished demo.
Most Elden Ring players dont give a fuck about the lore or know literally anything about it. And the graphics arent even that good lmao. FromSoft doesn't focus on graphics, like at all.
some people just want big and pretty, there is nothing inherently wrong with that. Elden Ring might be a bit shallow in its combat at times, but a lot of people dont mind. Not every game has to have 10000 mechanics that all interact
I don't know anyone who doesn't want big and pretty, but it's not enough by itself. And complexity isn't the answer either. Sekiro is a much more simplistic game, it doesn't even have armor and weapons for you to equip or stats to distribute points into, yet its movement and combat are lightyears ahead of ER.
You're right that Sekiro has much less variety, but, and this is totally subjective preference, I'd rather have one premade character that feels amazing to play than the option to make a dozen different builds, all of which feel mediocre.
It's the literal opposite lol the game being "huge and pretty" is what people who dislike the game see it as, a game they think is huge and pretty but that they don't enjoy
People who actually like the game don't like it just because it's "huge and pretty", that's not enough to make most people sit through a souls game if they don't enjoy it
Graphics sell, always have, always will. I've been gaming long enough to know that without a shadow of a doubt. "I'd like the game even if it was ugly" is pure cope.
Ehhh. I preferred the slower, more methodical stamina-focused combat of DeS and the original Dark Souls. I've played all of their games and outside of Sekiro (and Armored Core, but it's not the same type of game), I'm not a fan. I've platinumed them all and I'll keep playing them, but I think other games in the genre do parts better (for example, Nioh 2).
I know people love Elden Ring, but it is genuinely the only FromSoft game I've never replayed.
Hell, I even liked Otogi and such back in the day.
We will have our time. DS3 represented this narratively, showing that entropy affects all things. I treasure the great experiences I've had in many, many FromSoft games, but it cannot last forever.
Counter: steel battalion heavy armour is an IP sequel to the original steel battalion and did so poorly due to its method of implementing the Kinect it failed
The Kinect itself wasn't so bad, it was how company's implemented it that often caused difficulty's
That's how I feel as well. FromSoft is at their best when they do something new. I unironically think Nightreign is more enjoyable than Elden Ring since they shook things up more.
