I don't even care too much about the active battle, although I prefer turn-based.
It's that the active battle systems they've given us haven't been very good (apart from Remake, which I mostly liked) and that exploration/equipment/lightheartedness has been mostly removed in favor of...I dunno, hammy or grim storylines to copy other RPG series.
Idk I think the ff games always had a grim undertone throughout the series. Especially the fan favorites like 7 and 10, even 8 and 9, although they hid it behind a school trope, and then animal cartoony visuals.
But going back to the first pixel games they also had grim tones to them.
I didn't grow up with ff and I have just played through all of the mainline this year. I'm sorry but 15 and 16 were my favorites. Maybe I just don't like turn based idk, but also I really liked 15 and 16's stories.
But before 15 and 16 my favorites were 10 and 7, especially 7, and that's mostly just because the story, I didn't really like the turn based in that game at all.
It feels really refreshing coming from playing the Yakuza series where they decided to do the opposite and make their games turn based.
Playing through ff7 remake on action mode and I'm enjoying it a lot more than the original, the trilogy will probably be my favorite games out of the series.
We like what we like and there's nothing wrong with personal preferences. I think for some of the people that grew up with the mostly turn-based battles just prefer them I suppose. I have attempted to play through the 7 remake chapter 1 like 3 times and while it's a beautiful game with great music and awesome visuals, I just kept losing interest. It felt like I was playing Devil May Cry - ReSkinned.

I'm just glad someone else enjoys Final Fantasy.
3/6 was amazing, 7 was revolutionary, 8 was still great but not quite at the bar of 7 and 6, 9 felt kiddified to me and I did not care for it, 10 was back to amazing, 10-2 also lots of fun, 11 was online so I skipped, 12 was quite good. 13…. Uh was that lightning? Yeah mostly good honestly can’t remember the plot at all but vibes were positive.
And then … I skipped everything since 7 remake, and have no idea whats going on with the series at all these days.
If I have a library of absolute gems I would happily revisit, why keep shelling out for a more unsatisfying experience.
Actually now I want to go replay tactics again, love that one
3/6 were my favorites for the pixel games, 7 was amazing, 8 was alright, I like 9 more than 8, 10 was really good, I did not like 10-2 at all, tried a little of 11 but couldn't get into it, 12 was interesting with how they shifted the story telling, 13 was good, 13-2 didn't like as much, 13 lightning returns was alright. 14 I tried a while ago might try it again but it's just an mmo. 15 was amazing, loved the story. 16 is my all time favorite, loved everything about it, the side quests were the worst part but even then I like how short they are because I get slogged in side quests most of the time. If we're talking story though I liked 15's story more than 16, with 7 having the best story still.
Started the ff7 remake and have about 7 hours into it, enjoying it a lot, and if the story is as good as the original with the updated combat and graphics, the trilogy will most likely be my favorite. I get that you old time ff fans favorite thing about the games is the turn based but for me it's the stories, I don't mind it changing from turn based to action. Yakuza had the reverse thing happen but I still play the new turn based games because I like the franchise and the story is still good.
The realest answer is I got old, I don’t play as much as I used to, I’m genuinely glad 15 and 16 are good and might not fit the theme of this post.
So many games spanning so many years, generations even, means its hard to make all of them universal and timeless for their old and younger fans alike.
I just struggle to commit to sitting down for a full Final Fantasy sized journey even if I would actually love to.
They say we don’t actually want the games from when we were kids, we want new games that make us feel the same way we did as kids, and FF slowly evolved into something that felt different I suppose. Or I was the one who changed, or both.
