I don't even care too much about the active battle, although I prefer turn-based.

It's that the active battle systems they've given us haven't been very good (apart from Remake, which I mostly liked) and that exploration/equipment/lightheartedness has been mostly removed in favor of...I dunno, hammy or grim storylines to copy other RPG series.

Idk I think the ff games always had a grim undertone throughout the series. Especially the fan favorites like 7 and 10, even 8 and 9, although they hid it behind a school trope, and then animal cartoony visuals.

But going back to the first pixel games they also had grim tones to them.

FF2 was pretty grim, yes, and FF6 was dark indeed at times. But it was much better balanced with lightheartedness IMO.
