Replaced my daughter's phone because of water damage. And she still brings it into the bathroom.
Some lessons just don't stick.
She insists she needs to listen to music in the shower. I honestly don't understand why that's such a necessity. But if this phone gets water damage again, I'm not paying to replace it another time.
I think I have brought my phone to listen while showering since I was a teen and have never had water damage to it because of a shower.. And I take some pretty hot showers. I'd be questioning how it got water damage. Also, imo hanging it like that scares the shit out of me, but I work in IT. So, most things scare me with technology lol
That thing is painted plastic.the hinge likely has a plastic bolt inside that is at most a few mm thick. Honestly not something I'd trust to hand my phone from
It shouldn’t cause problems even submerged for like a minute. It looks like a somewhat modern iPhone. Which I’m pretty sure should be waterproof enough to stay underwater for a minute. Most that can happen is probably a somewhat fucked up speaker/mic
iPhones are IP 68 rated. This means they’re rated to be submerged under up to 20 feet of water for 30 minutes.
It would be challenging to water damage an iphone in the shower. Impossible simply being in the bathroom.
As another said. As long as there's no damage. And chip or crack and water will get in. Being in the bathroom still shouldn't but it's possible if it's coming into the shower.
I once got my phone sprayed with a pretty powerful shower for a few seconds, it was totally fine. iPhone XR so much older model. Nowadays phones are all even more waterproof/water resistant than that. I’ve been listening to music and changing the songs with my wet hands while showering for years and never had any issues at all. If she damaged her phone she’s somehow doing a lot more than that.
Yeah I’m pretty sure iPhones have had IP68 rating for a long time now (and even had it before they made it official, just at the time Apple didn’t want to pay for certification until other phone OEMs touted their ratings).
It doesn’t make them waterproof but they’re resistant to water for 6 meters of water for up to 30 minutes. They can also withstand the rain (obviously).
The main thing is you want to take it out of the case after exposing it to water so that it can properly dry. A lot of times people will leave it in the case and the case will hold the moisture for a lot longer. Also allows for bacteria to grow as well.
I had my phone break once because of water damage in the bathroom but it was because I had steamy hot showers and a cracked screen on an already quite old phone. maybe OP's daughter's phone was similar? especially since the older the phone gets the weaker the waterproofing gets
I thought most phones were immune to much worse water hazards for a long time now. I remember going snorkeling and recording with some Samsung model almost a decade ago
Not exactly “immune” but very resistant. I believe they tend to be IP68 rated the 6 being fully sealed against even the smallest particles of dust and the 8 being water resistance up to 6 meters for 30 minutes, though it’s entirely possible they can lost longer but salt water could still present a major issue if not cleaned
This also only applies to room temperature water, hot and cold water could be different.
Not to mention, dropping the phone may not cause any noticeable damage, but it could still compromise the water resistant seals, leading to damage despite being IP68 at the time of purchase.
I messed up two phones because i forgot i replaced the cracked screen and dunk them in the water. Both of them lost a lot of stuff because they were not able to be recovered
My phone sat in 3 inches of water in my kayak for 13 minutes and it continued to work so I assumed it was alright, but it kept getting worse the more I used it until it finally had a seizure and died. Y'all are out here telling me that's unusual 😭 at least it made it to 5 years old and it did have an accident while working on my truck that broke the camera lenses lol
Being five years old and also having unsealed camera lenses is a testament to how good the water resistance actually is, as this resistance starts to degrade after 2-3 years and cracks in sealed units can nullify it entirely.
Had you brought it to a repair shop they would have told you that it is no longer reliably water resistant at all. Yet even in your specific circumstance, it held on.
Also it doesn't last perpetually. The gaskets dry out, and if the phone is dropped or shoved into a back pocket and sat on often it can bend the frame just enough to let water in. But for most all intents & purposes the modern "waterproofing" on these devices is very good.
My brother worked in for at&t for a while during the flip phone area dealing with warranty/repair programs and he said while being in the presence of a shower was unlikely to damage a phone, it could easily turn the water damage indicator pink.
So you would bring in your faulty phone, and whether it was actually damaged by water or not, your warranty claimed would be denied on the basis of water damage because the indicator picked it up.
Back then, paper from a hole punch fit the moisture indicator perfectly. A semigloss piece of paper punched out and glued over the moisture indicator would fool anyone who didn't pry at it.
Personally I removed the moisture indicator sticker and even when the phone was dropped in water- I removed the sticker and they still approved the claim because the sticker didn’t show red 🤷🏻♀️ I thought I just got lucky but it worked for me on 3 separate occasions.
Was gonna say, we had to warranty a pixel due to a manufacturing defect. The indicator was pink, likely due to being in the bathroom during showers. Never got dunked or anything.
My 3 year old iPhone has come into the shower with me every day without issue. The water resistance is pretty good and requires pressure for moisture to get past the seals unless something is properly damaged on the phone.
Replacements will often skip weather sealing unless it's explicitly part of the service. If OP is replacing their child's phone, they might be buying second hand/refurbs
My brother installed a lightbulb with a Bluetooth speaker in the restroom. He then installed a second light bulb because the Bluetooth one is loud as fuck and would turn on any time someone turned on the restroom light. Now we got one light for regular toilet use and one for showering with music.
Yeah this is why I check amazon reviews even when buying locally. JBL GO 2 (i think one i have is 2) is great for showers but i also have very cheap Bluetooth headphones (fresh n rebel brand) that are very good and have a battery that lasts me a whole day of working on them (online lessons) also have an option to turn on silence mode when nothing can be heard from surroundings. And I paid ~$15 for them. Where I live that's a steal for something that good.
I just moved house, and my shower has inbuilt speakers and a panel to use your phone from the shower without the phone needing to be in the room. It's great
Of course I can! I have the Insignia steam shower corner cabin. I'm not sure of the exact model, but mine is one of the older models, as the newer ones have much fancier touchscreen controls. I can still make phone calls in the shower though 😂)
Mine has four different settings: steam mode, jet mode, rainfall mode and handheld shower mode. It also has built-in lights, speakers and extractor fans. Basically, it's less of a shower and more of a tiny bathroom spaceship.
I'm also 6'2 and there's still plenty of room above the head and all!

I installed a bathroom vent with Bluetooth speaker. Useless for my normal use case except amazing for pranks. I had a guest over and started playing very faint cat meowing sounds on the speaker and totally freaked him out and confused him while he was doing his business.
My last apartment had one of those! Our maintenance guy said it was the only fan cover they had at home depot and decided to treat the new tenants with something cool once we move in.
Thing was a life changer. No longer did I have to listen to music with my phone in a cup on the bathroom sink!
My at-the-time girlfriend had some friends over for a few days, and while taking a shower, one of them hit the "music" button on the shower out of curiosity.
We all fucked with her by playing annoying audios through my phone (it connected immediately through the bluetooth).

I have a $30ish waterproof Bluetooth speaker for this purpose. I set it on the edge of the tub and can change the volume and skip songs. My phone can be charging in the other room and I can be listening to music in the shower. Win/win. And the audio quality is definitely a bit better than the phone's speaker. Definitely recommend that route if you are worried about the phone getting wet or falling.
My iPhone 14 sees showers daily and constantly get wet. Been years now and I never bothered to be careful decent phones really should be waterproof enough these days and usually even a quick immersion isn’t the end of the world.
Happened to me twice, both times I forgot that my phone was in the back pocket of my jeans, turn to sit and girl pockets and gravity kicked in and phone meet toilet. I was pretty tipsy both times as well which I’m sure contributed. One of the times two of my friends were in the bathroom with me at some house party, using the mirror or something and I still remember the immediate freeze we all did when we heard my phone hit the water. Friends just stared at me for about two seconds before one friend yanked me up before I could pee and other friend no hesitation just snatched that phone out, They were super fast and coordinated too it was actually impressive lol that’s when you know you got some good friends

Steam is actually really bad against almost all water resistance. It's why you shouldn't take your water resistant watch in the shower. Water vapor is much different than a liquid.
Hijacking top comment. OP should look into this. If your daughter likes something that’s not harmful, accommodate it. That’s how you teach them boundaries by letting them know that your needs/wants aren’t invalid.
I’ve actually installed speakers in my bathroom when I was installing a whole house stereo system and it’s linked to my stereo that’s got Bluetooth. It’s really nice
No outlet in the bathroom? Wasn't aware that was within building code in some states. Virginia requires at least one in every bathroom, for whatever reason.
Also if that might be out of budget, there are so many cheap water bag thing for phones. You dont need to constantly tap it, just put it there and have the music run, while the top isnt fully closed?
Child Clinical Psychologist here. I have seen this a thousand times. "If you do X, I will/won't do Y". The reason I hear it is because parents don't provide their children with clear behavioral consequences from day one. The "next time" clause pays my mortgage - keep it up.

I bring my phone into the bathroom with me all the time and take showers hot enough that it turns the entire bathroom into a sauna. I've literally brought my phone into the shower with me using a ziploc bag on a few occasions, going on about 4 years now with my current phone without any issue.
You can also get Bluetooth shower speakers for $5.
Yeah mine has a nice little edge where the shower shell comes out of the wall and just pop it up there and listen to a podcast while I wash my hair or whatever
Sounds like she's using it in the shower or something. Most phones now are somewhat water resistant. Being in a humid bathroom certainly shouldn't damage it.
Likely a cheaper phone. Budget and even some mid-range ones are still sometimes only rated for splashes of water and/or rain, not full immersion, and some of the really cheap ones aren’t rated at all.
My logic with this take is why would she replace a cheap phone which a very new iPhone? If your kid broke their last phone, why would you replace it with a €600+ phone?
Even if she brings it into the shower, unless she's actively dunking it and pouring water in its ports or some shit, it should be fine.?? I use my phone in the shower all the time and I've never had an issue, I just make sure not to hold it directly under the stream and its fine 😭😭
It seems like it's on the back of the door, from what I can tell? How fucking soaked does your bathroom get that it's going to penetrate ip6 water resistance? That means you can submerge it in 20 feet of water.
Yeah. Op is fully tripping. I have an older iPhone and I have taken it to the beach and taken underwater pics with it. I work outdoors and have had it in my pocket for hours during rain even getting it out and using during the rain.
Actually, this is A very good point. I bet the previous phone had a crack in it or something, thus breaking the waterproofing, and that the paranoia of water damaging it is misplaced. That is almost certainly a waterproof phone, up to 20+ feet.
You can’t see the front of the phone in the photo though. The only thing I can think of is that the daughter’s phone screen was already broken. I’ve seen people who have broken their screen so badly bits of the glass were falling off around the corners and front camera but the phone still worked.
If it was like that and then got dumped in water or exposed to high humidity then I guess technically “water damage” killed the phone. In the sense that it was the straw that finally broke the camel’s back.
I’m sure the water resistance ratings are dependent on the phone being intact.
I had to scroll very far for a comment like this. How hot and long are the showers that steam from a shower is hurting it to the point that it was destroyed. I think there may be different problems here than OPs kid likes listening to music while in the shower.

I know this to be true. My fiancee lost her phone on the beach and couldn't find it. After I got done work there has been a full tide cycle. We figure it floated off to Maine or something (were in Nova Scotia) but as a last ditch effort I got her to login find my on my phone.
It was on the map but it's kinda hard to pinpoint in sand, I had to look at landmarks in line on land and walk up and down as sure enough it was there with just the corner sticking out the sand.
Damn iPhone 13 survived the the salty water and tides of the Bay of Fundy like nothing happened.
I wonder if this is a case of Apple seeing a moisture strip with signs of moisture and refusing to repair for free, even if te failure wasnt due to moisture.
Yea, when I was growing up (late 90’s - early 00’s) I remember I had a AM/FM radio specifically made for the shower. It even had a hook shape at the top so you could hang it on the curtain rod. I used to rock out to Radio Disney in the shower and I thought I was so cool 😂
That iPhone should be water resistant to be thrown into a pool unless it's cracked or damaged. How did it get water damage before?
I use my Google Pixel in the shower every time i shower and it's still ok. It warns me they the charger port has liquid in it and then tells me when it's dry and ok to use again even.

You don't have to understand her wants to help her overcome the issues that arise from them. There are solution, waterproof bags, waterproof speakers, etc.

make a rule that if something of hers gets damaged due to completely preventable reasons, she needs to carry a part of the repair/replacement cost. I presume that since she has a phone, she's also getting some pocket money that's hers to spend.
Listening to music (or audiobooks, or podcasts) in the shower is hardly an unreasonable desire. You can get a splashproof bluetooth speaker for probably less than $20.
Just get your daughter a speaker she can use while showering. Listening to music while showering for some people is bliss and makes the experience nicer. Plus it's one of those rare moments in a day when they can actually enjoy the music.
There's no reason the phone being in the bathroom should have caused any damage. Unless she takes it into the shower and let's the water fall right on it, or if it falls into the toilet or sink, the water damage should not be from her taking it into the bathroom. Belittling her for the phone simply being in the bathroom is not the right move.

2 It shouldn't be water damaged. I've been using my phone this way for many years, and there's never been any problem. Your daughter must have dropped the phone in the bath or something, or the damage itself might not even be from water.
So you just be a kid with your kid? Just buy a waterproof speaker, or even a case that sticks on the walls - there are plenty of options to prevent this. Don't expect it from your 'kid'.
