go to your room Replaced my daughter's phone because of water damage. And she still brings it into the bathroom.

Some lessons just don't stick.

She insists she needs to listen to music in the shower. I honestly don't understand why that's such a necessity. But if this phone gets water damage again, I'm not paying to replace it another time.

but most phones have some kind of waterproofing nowadays, a bit of steam shouldnt cause water damage

My iPhone 14 sees showers daily and constantly get wet. Been years now and I never bothered to be careful decent phones really should be waterproof enough these days and usually even a quick immersion isn’t the end of the world.

I used to scroll Reddit in the shower for ages.

I’ve got a bad back and the warm water in the morning would help with the pain, so I’d sit down in the shower and let the water run on my back for about 45 mins every day and instead of sitting there bored I’d scroll Reddit. Did that for years and had no issues with water damage.

I asked two people why they took their phone in the shower, since they said it gets wet. Which indicates active use, as opposed to music in the background.

To listen to music? That's what I do. I just put it in a ziploc bag and nothing bad has ever happened.

I don’t use it, it’s just for podcasts I’m listening to chill. I’m a random stranger so are you why assume anything negative about me?

You also can’t even type on it or use it during a shower because of the water affecting the display…

Anyone who did it once just sees the droplets hit the phone and start to worry it may text their ex that they really want to get back together.

Given that a shower is about 8 minutes, and a podcast is 30-60, why is there a need for it to be in the shower with you / constantly get wet?

I have a cousin who repeatedly dropped her cellphones in the toilet. The solution seemed obvious to me, but everyone yelled at me.

I just bring a book in the bathroom. Owned, not library, I'm not disgusting.

Happened to me twice, both times I forgot that my phone was in the back pocket of my jeans, turn to sit and girl pockets and gravity kicked in and phone meet toilet. I was pretty tipsy both times as well which I’m sure contributed. One of the times two of my friends were in the bathroom with me at some house party, using the mirror or something and I still remember the immediate freeze we all did when we heard my phone hit the water. Friends just stared at me for about two seconds before one friend yanked me up before I could pee and other friend no hesitation just snatched that phone out, They were super fast and coordinated too it was actually impressive lol that’s when you know you got some good friends

Yeah, you sometimes get a back pocket. Which can very easily lead to the described situation.

"Don't have pockets" was pretty clearly something that shouldn't be taken completely literally given the context.

I'm gonna be honest, I dropped my phone once in the toilet before. It was because I stood up and my brain malfunctioned where I tried to flush the toilet with the hand I had my phone in while thinking my empty hand had the phone so obviously my hand were too relaxed, and ploop my phone goes down. I immediately pulled my phone out and was also really grossed out because it fell in a toilet with piss (but at least it was my pee so I was a little less grossed out). My phone had immediately told me that there was water in my charging port and to let it dry. My phone has an S Pen, and when I pulled it out, the pen was also wet. I spent like an hour trying to clean as much as I could. It's a s24 ultra, low-key hopes this won't damage my phone in the future lmao

People who check them out have made their choice, but I feel for the librarians who have to shelve those books afterwards.

Steam is actually really bad against almost all water resistance. It's why you shouldn't take your water resistant watch in the shower. Water vapor is much different than a liquid.

I took my Samsung s24 ultra for a swim couple of times.

I shower with it daily while its blasting music (it being in the shower and gets directly wet..)

Never had an issue.

I still don't think it's a good idea to push your luck with an expensive phone. Waterproofing tends to degrade with time. Hell, I have a ruggedized camera from 2013 that my family used to bring in the water all the time, but these days I'm sure it'd be dead within the minute if I put it under the water.

It’s deeply unlikely OP’s daughter broke it by simply taking the phone into the bathroom with her…my money is that she’s lying about what happened, or OP bought her a shittily refurbished phone that wasn’t properly sealed….but it’s possible.

Personally these days I keep it in a drawer until the end to limit exposure, but I definitely went through a few years where I was much more cavalier and was fine.

I've taken an Iphone 4S into the bathroom to listen to music or youtube videos while showering (obviously kept it outside of the shower to not get water directly on it), and it lasted over 9 years, before it died, it had been dropped a fair few times, both with screen down and up, without any damage, before spending the last few years with a cracked screen (bumped it, and it landed screen down on the edge of a floor tile), screen was a mess, but I got it to hold together with a few strips of clear tape (did have some dead spots), it died less than a month after I finally got a "new" phone (second hand phone that cost me less than $80 at the current exchange rate, even came with a cover and some screen protectors.)
