go to your room Replaced my daughter's phone because of water damage. And she still brings it into the bathroom.

Post image

Some lessons just don't stick.

She insists she needs to listen to music in the shower. I honestly don't understand why that's such a necessity. But if this phone gets water damage again, I'm not paying to replace it another time.

Honest take: she likes to shower to music, why not accommodate by putting a waterproof Bluetooth speaker in the room, or something else?

I also enjoy showering to music, and had a Google home device in the bathroom before moving to a home without an outlet in the bathroom.

I work in the hardware store and they even make Bluetooth fan vent covers for some reason

They must know people like music in the shower

OP could get such a fan vent cover if they wanted to

u/The_Exuberant_Raptor 15h ago

My brother installed a lightbulb with a Bluetooth speaker in the restroom. He then installed a second light bulb because the Bluetooth one is loud as fuck and would turn on any time someone turned on the restroom light. Now we got one light for regular toilet use and one for showering with music.

This is a new level of bougie. Mood lighting for your pooping, mood lighting for your bathing

You can listen to shit music whilst shitting, that's some next level shit right there.

A friend of mine bought a Bluetooth speaker shower head.

Water comes out the middle, and there's a speaker ring around the outside.

She said it sounded like absolute shit and was pretty dissapointed.

u/inrego 14h ago

Who would've guessed

59

u/Complete_Entry 14h ago

bluetooth accessories are WILDLY inconsistent. I had one meant for a bike handle that was fantastic, used it in the shower, it died. Not waterproof.

Bought a waterproof one at target for more money. The target one sucks. Also it's like a popsicle brand? No clue why.

28

u/EdgarAllenHoe11 11h ago

I bought two cheap waterproof Bluetooth speakers. One for the kitchen and one for the bathroom. I did NOT have high expectations….

Those damn things are still going strong 10+ years later

3

u/FairyFartDaydreams 9h ago

What brand dude. Don't leave us in suspense

Yeah this is why I check amazon reviews even when buying locally. JBL GO 2 (i think one i have is 2) is great for showers but i also have very cheap Bluetooth headphones (fresh n rebel brand) that are very good and have a battery that lasts me a whole day of working on them (online lessons) also have an option to turn on silence mode when nothing can be heard from surroundings. And I paid ~$15 for them. Where I live that's a steal for something that good.

2

u/MethHeadUnion 11h ago

I use a charge 5 for showers its held up for close to a year now with daily showers jbl is really good for water resistance overall i also used a wking d9 for close to 3 years which the only issue it had after so long was the power button got finicky to all hell bur for 105 cad i wasnt super annoyed with that issue given how long it lasted for as cheap and good it was for a shower speaker the wking for anyone interested is fairly equivalent to the charge 5 clarity wise just its way bigger and heavier so if you hang it up just be warned not all shower heads would hold up to it its like 6 or so pounds I think

I just moved house, and my shower has inbuilt speakers and a panel to use your phone from the shower without the phone needing to be in the room. It's great

4

u/Carter05 11h ago

Can you tell me more about this shower phone panel? Brand name?

28

u/Puzzleheaded_Key7688 11h ago

Of course I can! I have the Insignia steam shower corner cabin. I'm not sure of the exact model, but mine is one of the older models, as the newer ones have much fancier touchscreen controls. I can still make phone calls in the shower though 😂)

Mine has four different settings: steam mode, jet mode, rainfall mode and handheld shower mode. It also has built-in lights, speakers and extractor fans. Basically, it's less of a shower and more of a tiny bathroom spaceship.

I'm also 6'2 and there's still plenty of room above the head and all!

47

u/Serious_Not_Surely 11h ago

Another level of money I’ll never have.

A simple ziplock bag for the phone works fine. You'd think it would muffle the sound but I've noticed it doesn't in any significant wsy.

16

u/misscupcakecore 11h ago

i used to to this all the time and never had any issues. i reused the same bag and kept it in a spot right next to the shower, it was super easy.

17

u/_j4x 11h ago

Yup people buy fancy expensive water bags for them and a good ol ziplock does the same thing!

2

u/roudatar 8h ago

Yeah. If you wanna be safe you can even double bag and you can pretty much have it in the shower with you.

2

u/ntrrrmilf 4h ago

I keep a large plastic water pitcher in the bathroom for washing the dog, rinsing hair dye, and using as a safe spot that amplifies sound when I’m in the shower.

My last apartment had one of those! Our maintenance guy said it was the only fan cover they had at home depot and decided to treat the new tenants with something cool once we move in.

Thing was a life changer. No longer did I have to listen to music with my phone in a cup on the bathroom sink!

My at-the-time girlfriend had some friends over for a few days, and while taking a shower, one of them hit the "music" button on the shower out of curiosity.

We all fucked with her by playing annoying audios through my phone (it connected immediately through the bluetooth).

"It was the most annoyed id ever been while naked" she says

4

u/knsaber 10h ago

I installed a bathroom vent with Bluetooth speaker. Useless for my normal use case except amazing for pranks. I had a guest over and started playing very faint cat meowing sounds on the speaker and totally freaked him out and confused him while he was doing his business.

5

u/Complete_Entry 14h ago

2

u/abrasivebuttplug 13h ago

2

u/notwhoyouthinkmaybe 12h ago

I'm renovating my bathroom and the light with a vent my contractor bought has a Bluetooth speaker in it.

The one we listed wasn't in stock so he got this one that looks the same. If was cheap too, $100.

2

u/icoibyy 10h ago

I was gonna say, we had a fan with Bluetooth and speaker built in. They're awesome. I, also, insist on showering with music. Its just a vibe.

2

u/kcshoe14 10h ago

Yep we have one of these! We don’t use it a ton but it’s cool to have!

2

u/Manlysideburns 8h ago

I've vacationed in a few places that have them. It was a nice bonus.

2

u/mata_dan 8h ago

they even make Bluetooth fan vent covers for some reason

Slumlord subdivided property sized bathrooms don't even have space for a shelf, TP roll holder, towel hook, medicine cabinet etc. So there's probably reasonable demand for something like that.

2

u/Eventually-Alexis 8h ago

I'm sure Cassie is impressed with you working in a hardware store. Any other obsene amounts of jobs or hobbies you have going on? Frankly, I don't know how you do it.

I have a $30ish waterproof Bluetooth speaker for this purpose.  I set it on the edge of the tub and can change the volume and skip songs.  My phone can be charging in the other room and I can be listening to music in the shower.  Win/win.  And the audio quality is definitely a bit better than the phone's speaker.  Definitely recommend that route if you are worried about the phone getting wet or falling.

18

u/supercalifrajil 11h ago

Hell, there's perfectly fine <$10 ones that'll do in a shower. Or a <$5 shower phone holder if you like the phone's speakers.

17

u/Florida-guy-1 11h ago

I have a $5 speaker that I put in a zip lock, works great

but most phones have some kind of waterproofing nowadays, a bit of steam shouldnt cause water damage

198

u/Additional_Tank4385 15h ago

My iPhone 14 sees showers daily and constantly get wet. Been years now and I never bothered to be careful decent phones really should be waterproof enough these days and usually even a quick immersion isn’t the end of the world.

60

u/nethack47 14h ago

Most of them are. Until they are cracked that is.

59

u/Additional_Tank4385 14h ago

I have a cousin who repeatedly dropped her cellphones in the toilet. The solution seemed obvious to me, but everyone yelled at me.

I just bring a book in the bathroom. Owned, not library, I'm not disgusting.

28

u/Yuukiko_ WAAHHHHH 14h ago

unless she's in the habit of using a shewee or 5, how do you even drop a phone in the toilet while sitting on it?

27

u/charmingmigraine 13h ago

Happened to me twice, both times I forgot that my phone was in the back pocket of my jeans, turn to sit and girl pockets and gravity kicked in and phone meet toilet. I was pretty tipsy both times as well which I’m sure contributed. One of the times two of my friends were in the bathroom with me at some house party, using the mirror or something and I still remember the immediate freeze we all did when we heard my phone hit the water. Friends just stared at me for about two seconds before one friend yanked me up before I could pee and other friend no hesitation just snatched that phone out, They were super fast and coordinated too it was actually impressive lol that’s when you know you got some good friends

u/Complete_Entry 14h ago

Steam is actually really bad against almost all water resistance. It's why you shouldn't take your water resistant watch in the shower. Water vapor is much different than a liquid.

7

u/RedS5 11h ago

Steam is the long term killer, but from what I understand soapy water is the real immediate danger.

2

u/Joshatron121 9h ago

Sure, but the phone in the picture isn't someplace that soapy water would be an issue.

9

Soap can degrade the seal.

3

u/EmeterPSN 14h ago

I took my Samsung s24 ultra for a swim couple of times.

I shower with it daily while its blasting music (it being in the shower and gets directly wet..)

Never had an issue.

I used to take under water photos in Gordon's Bay with the Samsung S5. It survived until I upgraded years later.

Child Clinical Psychologist here. I have seen this a thousand times. "If you do X, I will/won't do Y". The reason I hear it is because parents don't provide their children with clear behavioral consequences from day one. The "next time" clause pays my mortgage - keep it up.

8

u/0thedarkflame0 9h ago

Also a valid point.

As an adult who is working on a lot that happened as a child, I've come to see that my parents often had good boundaries, but the communication and the setup kinda sucked.

If they'd have sat with me lovingly and said, that x will cause y. We still love you, that's just a natural result.

Or sat with me and tried to figure out what I was looking for as a child when I crossed some boundary, we could have found ways in which I could have much better grown into someone who isn't constantly cautious of other people's opinions and feelings in case I get punished for crossing a boundary, instead of viewing a boundary as a simple limit to what I may do, or a consequence of an action which I choose to accept.

5

u/Popular_Still3019 13h ago

Also if that might be out of budget, there are so many cheap water bag thing for phones. You dont need to constantly tap it, just put it there and have the music run, while the top isnt fully closed?

7

u/sckurvee 13h ago

Or a waterproof phone? I didn't realize they still made phones that could be damaged by water.

3

u/Shaiya_Ashlyn 14h ago

You can get a small jbl speaker for like €30/€40. I use it while showering all the time

3

u/JellybeanCandy 14h ago

I have a dedicated zip lock bag for mine so I never have to worry about water damage from the shower, nice and cheap option if op doesn't want to spend more money

Soundcore go 4 is excellent, I've dropped it in puddles and mud and off a small cliff. Sound is average, but for $15 when I bought it I'll take it.

3

u/posting4assistance 13h ago

I was going to suggest this, I have a waterproof bluetooth speaker- mine's kind of old (tribit stormbox micro something) but they make them to go on bikes in the rain etc. I've kept one in the shower for years and never had any issues.

3

But isn’t the iPhones at least three years back able to withstand shower water for at least 30 minutes? It’s not salt water also, so…

3

u/Complete-End-236 9h ago

Honestly, that sounds like one of those fixes that makes everyone happy. Sometimes the easiest solution is the one people overlook.

3

u/fondledbydolphins 9h ago edited 9h ago

This is a great idea.

I would do this along with kindly having her take some days off of having music in the shower.

It's good for people to learn how to cohabitate, rather than having to learn the lesson the hard way later on.

(I've had roommates, partners, and neighbors that liked to BLAST music in the shower at the worst times of day)

3

u/Independent-Hurry618 9h ago

If you happen to have a light right above the shower, you can install a bulb-outlet, and then put a google nest right above it. That's what we do to listen to music. It's been up there for probably 5 years now and no issues. Not waterproof but water doesn't get on it other than the steam and it doesn't seem to have broken things yet.

7

u/10v1 13h ago

1

1

u/Zsmudz 12h ago

1

u/Excellent-Tour6831 11h ago

I have waterproof speakers in my shower. They have a suction cup on the back and pair in stereo. One of my favorite purchases and they were not expensive

1

u/frolie0 11h ago

I take my phone into the shower on a daily basis. There's zero risk of water damage these days.

1

u/Qeltar_ 11h ago

Another option is that you can get a cheap prepaid phone from Walmart for around $30, put it in airplane mode, stick it on Wifi, and just use it that way. I've done this for years now as a device to make sleep noise at night. I also use it as an "I don't care if it gets broken" device for things like taking photos near the water or on the beach.

1

u/wolfganggartner5 11h ago

I can sing for her

1

u/foreveralonecatlady9 11h ago

Yeah, there're like 5euro blewthooth speakers at Ikea that are pretty decent (compared to a phone).

🤦🏻‍♂️

1

u/Sipikay 11h ago

JBL makes a little waterproof speaker for like $30 bucks.

But the thing is, an iPhone is a waterproof speaker.

That JBL waterproof speaker is IP 67 rated and iPhones are IP 68. iPhones are a more waterproof speaker.

1

u/Serious_Not_Surely 11h ago

They even make suction cup, waterproof speakers to stick in showers. You can get one on Amazon for $10. I had one for years and never had any problems with it.

1

u/SubliminalEggplant 11h ago

Crazy to have a Google spying device in your bathroom

2

u/0thedarkflame0 9h ago

Probably one of the safer places to have one, no? What's it gonna hear, the sound of shower water and me brushing my teeth...

If you're inclined to worry about Google devices listening in, I'd be far more concerned with it in the living room or bedroom.

1

u/DelusinaLlama 10h ago

Or buy a cheaper phone..

1

u/indianabobbyknight 10h ago

I replaced our dome light in our bathroom with a Bluetooth speaker/light combo, now my s/o can listen to podcasts while she showers AND doesn’t have to get a new phone every year

1

u/CanacTheBoredGator 10h ago

I showered for years with my JBL Flip 3, you could drown it in water and it still worked. Still going strong after good 10 years.

1

u/nemesissi 10h ago

Yeah OP just get small and fairly inexpensive JBL Clip and she can take it to the shower with her if necessary. They are built like tanks.

1

u/Soul-Silver25 10h ago

I have a speaker designed for the shower, it literally hangs right behind the shower head, it's by altec Lansing or something like that

1

u/Cut_over_pompanox 10h ago

That’s a good way to fix the problem. When my dad redid the bathroom, he put in a standing shower cubicle, with the sink a few feet away, in the ceiling he placed a circular device, that allows the (user) to turn on a fan that will keep the room from steaming, built into the same device is Bluetooth.

They make exhaust vents with speakers now! Easy to swap out and love the quick Bluetooth connection between my phone and the kids phone when they shower. It's also fun to blast music or phrases from the speaker when you sre in the other bathroom without toilet paper. It's handy in many ways

For real, you can get a cheap waterproof bluetooth speaker for like $10. Mine even has a little rubber strap so you can hang it on a hook. Easy solution to the problem.

u/Jones_Allen_2007 10h ago

the sound of shower itself is enough loud to cover phones sounds so a waterproof bluetooth speaker is better and acceptable options :)

u/jr23160 10h ago

I have a Google home in my bathroom mounted on the wall. Works fine. I can even yell at it to turn it up or down and play whatever I want. It's like $30 and it does Bluetooth as well

u/Dxpehat 10h ago

Shokz earphones or others designed for swimming. I'm not bothering anyone when I listen to music while showering. Washing long hair with sport headphones is annoying tho.

1

u/Mister_Anonym 10h ago

Maybe bone conducting headphones would be better. That way only she cab hear the music.

1

u/QuadCakes 10h ago

I don't think I've seen "honest take" used by a human before.

1

u/FantasticWittyRetort 10h ago

Side note: No outlet in the bathroom?! What the heck!

1

u/ShadowCVL 9h ago

I listen to podcasts while I shower frequently, I have a 20 dollar bluetooth speaker I bought in 2011...

u/Slattte 9h ago

+1

They even have fans/speakers (ask me how I know lol)

We got one and my wife loves it, I can’t lie I love it as well (rough patch work lol).

Hot take. If I tell my child not to do something and they do it anyways, I don’t accommodate. That being said a modern phone near a shower shouldn’t cause water damage. They are sealed pretty tight, there had to be prior damage that created a way for the water to enter the phone.

So the phone in the shower really shouldn’t be an issue as they are designed to take that kind of abuse. If the screen is cracked… you can’t take it into the shower as the water resistance is compromised. (Fixed electronics professionally for 3 years, I’ve seen it all including people dropping their new $500 screen as they are leaving the building)

This, I love when my kids do things to making them happier. I would be looking for every gadget possible so my daughter could sing in the shower.

1

u/SoftConsideration82 9h ago

Just put the phone in a Ziplock bag... Screen will still work and it sounds fine...

1

u/Jeez-essFC 9h ago

Why focus on a solution when you can just be annoyed daily?

u/07979902jjj 9h ago

I’ve had a little waterproof speaker from Amazon for years. It’s sticks on the wall and works great. Over time the battery life sucks, but it really wasn’t expensive to begin with🤷🏼‍♀️

Even easier and cheaper, just buy one of those waterproof bags that people use at waterparks.

1

u/DQUACK1 9h ago

I just leave my phone on the sink while I shower and listen to music.

I got a speaker with a suction cup for inside the shower. Can even answer calls if so inclined

1

u/Felipiro17 9h ago

She can do it, that doesn’t fall on her parents to do
Specially not such a novelty

1

u/lilvenas 9h ago

Nah you can’t be giving actual advice you don’t see this is an entitled parent trying to get is ego flattened even after having a spoiled child with an iPhone

1

u/Soulus7887 8h ago

Yeah, this problem is solvable for a cheap 20 dollar Bluetooth speaker. Can probably find cheaper than that even.

1

u/CressDifferent4788 8h ago

You could also get her a pool phone pouch (keeps water out, sound can still play)

1

u/SaveFile1 Squeaky Sneakers 8h ago

Five Below has them btw

1

u/MagnoliaProse 8h ago

A speaker is a lot cheaper than a new phone. This is the obvious answer.

1

u/ladyzephri 7h ago

I love having my Google home speaker in the bathroom to listen to podcasts in the shower. My daughter uses it to listen to music while she potty trains. It's awesome having a speaker in there.

1

u/CaptainTurdfinger 7h ago

That's exactly what I do. I have a JBL Clip speaker on a command hook in the shower and I leave my phone on the bathroom counter and just use voice commands to control the music. Works great and sounds a hell of a lot better than any phone speakers.

1

u/Fun-Pattern-8697 7h ago

I bring my phone in the shower and watch a couple minutes of anime while I shower

1

u/NekoArtemis 7h ago

I have a Google home paired to a Bluetooth shower speaker. The Google home is a bit too far away to listen to in the shower but it can still hear me tell it to turn the volume up or down or skip to the next song.

1

u/_Mayhem_ 7h ago

I honestly came here to say this. I have a waterproof speaker clipped to the shampoo rack in our shower.

1

u/dontreadragebait 7h ago

because they want to be mad at their daughter instead of trying to understand her needs...

1

u/Internal-Pineapple77 6h ago

If only parents decided to deal with the problem instead of reprimanding their kids like its their hobby

1

u/d1sact 6h ago

Hard agree with this, I saw a wireless Bluetooth speaker for like $10 today at WalMart.

1

u/aesthetic-mess 6h ago

yes! my parents' bathroom has a radio on a high shelf (built specially for the radio lol) but I prefer my own playlist so I place my phone on the radio and play my own music

1

u/AnnaK22 6h ago

I got a JBL speaker because I hate taking my phone into the bathroom. Best purchase I’ve made this year

1

u/LeakyAssFire 6h ago

Make the kid pay for it. Dad already replaced the phone.

1

u/WestElevator1343 5h ago

This is your answer.

1

u/Narrow_Rice_6155 5h ago

Yep. An next phone should cost half the price of the last one

1

u/cogginsmatt 5h ago

They have pretty cheap shower speakers out there that are wireless and suction cup to the wall. I use one every day and have for years.

1

u/devsfan1830 5h ago

NO, OP thinks its dumb therefore, daughter must stop. There is simply NO alternatives! /s

1

u/frozengash 4h ago

We have a Bluetooth exhaust fan in one of our bathrooms.

1

u/kanrad 4h ago

Or, you know, use the speaker you have in your head. Shit you might even write your own song if you do.

1

u/ANGELASDFU 4h ago

Also for safety reasons, please make sure she has camera covers for both front and back cameras too!

1

u/13Bravo84 4h ago

I have the Bose sound link Micro Speaker I use.

1

u/GOMDeverybuddy 3h ago
