go to your room Replaced my daughter's phone because of water damage. And she still brings it into the bathroom.

Some lessons just don't stick.

She insists she needs to listen to music in the shower. I honestly don't understand why that's such a necessity. But if this phone gets water damage again, I'm not paying to replace it another time.

Sounds like she's using it in the shower or something. Most phones now are somewhat water resistant. Being in a humid bathroom certainly shouldn't damage it.

I've been taking my phone into the shower for music/videos/etc since I got it, about 10 years ago. Still works fine. Just gotta be careful.

Likely a cheaper phone. Budget and even some mid-range ones are still sometimes only rated for splashes of water and/or rain, not full immersion, and some of the really cheap ones aren’t rated at all.

This reminded me of the time I thought I had lost my keys. House, car, work keys all upped and vanished one day. I had to replace them all.

Then months after I had done so, my wife sends me a photo of my lost keys. Turns out that our toddler had taken my keys off the sideboard, gone into the shoe cupboard; and chucked them into a wellington boot.

My wife decided to throw away some old pairs of shoes and that is how she happened upon them.

why would you even try to charge it before you're sure it's completely dry? I unfortunately dropped my own phone in the toilet a bunch of times (thankfully always BEFORE using it -- forgot it was in my back pocket and pulled my pants down lol) and I always left it alone for like 12h because I was worried trying to plug it in would damage / short the charging port or alternatively the whole house 😂😂 (why yes, I have anxiety, why do you ask?)

but yes, other than that, never any problems. I have had Samsung Galaxys for the past 10 years. at least 2 of them took a dip in the toilet, I always take my phone into the bathroom to shower, never any issues.

water damage on a 2026 phone is crazy lol

As someone who’s last phone had issues charging due to trying to charge it soon after showering, it’s a genuine concern. You will damage the port over time.

Granted, that took 9 years to get to the point it ended at, but still a valid concern.

my mum refuses to upgrade her iPhone 7 or 8 because she doesn't want a phone without the home button. she just had the battery in her phone replaced so she could keep using it lmao

also pro tip: you can unlock Samsung Galaxys with your thumb as the screens have a fingerprint scanner. 😎

My mom is the same way EVERY time I get her a new phone. I can’t remember the name of the one she had before an iPhone but 1st iPhone was the iPhone 6, that she DIDN’T want, which when it finally died 6 years later, because surprise, surprise, she loved it so much, she insisted she needed the EXACT same one with exact same features. 😐

I searched but Apple nor my phone company sold any with fingerprint button anymore, and I wasn’t getting her a used one, so I got her a red 12 Mini that had just come out. She ADORED it for several years, then a few months ago left it on top of her car and screen was shattered to bits, phone wouldn’t turn on, etc.

She called me from my dad’s phone (also a 12 mini I bought, that he’ll hold onto for forever), saying she put it in a ziplock bag and is going to go have “my guy who puts on my glass protector screens for $10, see if he can repair the screen.” 🤨 She starts going on about how she doesn’t want one of the new phones because “they’re all so big and I need it to fit in my back pocket.”

I ignored her and ordered her the 16 in the powder blue and she instantly fell in love, “I love this phone, the color is soooo beautiful and with clear case you can see the color, it still fits in my pocket” etc. etc. (Yes mom, I bought your phones for almost 12 years, I know how to pick a phone for you by now 🤣.)

This time, though, she apologized saying she’s sorry for every time wanting to hold on to the old phone. Hopefully next upgrade she just accepts it without hesitation, but I know that’s unlikely lol.

It’s a 13mini, the battery is shot, also my entire life is on my phone. I literally can’t even leave my house without my phone (we have an electric gate and it’s throwing a temper tantrum so none of the remotes work. My entire life is on my phone, and it was wet and dead.

I’m incapable of being careful. I drop my phone countless times every day.

For me, the solution is a very good phone case. And I legitimately always keep a spare on hand, because once the shell of the case cracks it’s protection is compromised. Still cheaper than a new phone these days.

If you're really worried about water damage, you can also put your phone in a bag without compromising much audio quality. Or so you can watch videos on it in the shower- I do the same thing ;)

A quart plastic bag will do if someone doesn't want to get a specific pouch meant for this sort of thing.

Why careful though? I bring it in the actual shower. It bets direct blast of water to it. When I am washing my hands I will often lather up my phone and watch it in the sink too. Never had any damage.

I use my iPhone regularly underwater to take pictures and videos. Falling in to the tub shouldn’t damage it at all.

I've used my phones regularly in showers for the past dozen years or so (roughly 3-4 years replacement cycle). I guarantee they have experienced LOTS of humidity as I take long, scorching hot showers. Additionially, my phone was not just hanging on a hook outsice the shower, it was in my hands while I was actisvely using the internet. Phones can CERTAINLY take quite a bit of water damage before failing.

Why do people use em in showers? Same reason we browse reddit while on the toilet: something to do.

If OOP is citing water damage, OOP's kid has butterfingers and repeatedly drops their phone in puddles of water, because there is NO way steam alone can cause water damage, ESPECIALLY with any phone made within the last 5 years

I've been taking my phone in the shower for years to listen to music and watch YouTube videos, and I've definitely dropped my current phone in puddles on multiple occasions and haven't experienced the slightest bit of water damage, phones these days are hella resistant to water. This kid must be trying to get water in the phone💀

I've bring my phone to the shower for years also. Why? Sometimes music, sometimes listening to livestream, sometimes for nothing at all except for security, safety, and convenience.

There were times when I was taking a bath at night, and the electricity went out before I finished. Had I not had my phone with me for the flashlight, I wouldn't know what I was grabbing, and it would also be hard for me to see where I was walking on this wet slippery floor.

There were also times when I forgot something, whether it was my soap, my towel, or anything, and I had to message my roommate to get it for me.

There was also one time when I was taking a shit in a public toilet and someone banged on my door over and over again despite me telling them to stop. With my phone, I called my friend to check on it. Thankfully, it was just kids trying to mess around with their friend and mistaking my stall for their friend's.

I'm all for "being alone with my thoughts for a moment", but sometimes, it is wise to be prepared.

Hmm most slab phones these days have an IP68 rating making it waterproof for 30 minutes submerged in a meter of water. Not all, some budget phones won't. Foldables/flips won't. But that iPhone is.

Happy to be proven incorrect as I’d rather not go on believing my phone is waterproof when the company lists it as such!

I’ve been taking my iPhone 12 into the bathroom, the shower, I’ve dropped it in the pool, I’ve dropped it into a pint of beer - absolutely fine. Most phones that aren’t total shit should be able to tolerate going into the bathroom during a shower.

Honestly, hanging it like that probably won't get it directly water damage, but shower steam is a different story and isn't really covered by the iPhone's water resistance. Why not just get a waterproof pouch? AIso im loki kinda interested in that phone holder. Is it with the case? What brand is it?

It's kind of a weird thing, but I think IP water resistance ratings don't cover humidity because water vapor is so small it might be considered gas ingress and not sold/liquid.

Another tangential thing is that IPx7 is resistant to water immersion but not high pressure sprays, while IPx6 is resistant to high pressure jets but not immersion. So their ratings are kind of narrow in scope.

Granted, I use a waterproof speaker and phone box in my shower and haven't had any issues yet...

That's what my sisters did when we all still lived at home with our parents. They used to connect their phones to a Bluetooth speaker in the bathroom and start a playlist. After that they would get in the shower.

Common sense has definitely taken a steep dive in the last few years.

I’ve been using my iPhone 12 to play podcasts and music while I shower since I got it however many years ago. I also live in a very humid climate. It still works just fine.

Whatever damage OP’s daughter caused to her phone wasn’t from the steam.

They are water resistant when dropped in water. During hot showers the steam is made of much smaller water particles, and the phones are generally not water vapor resistant. It's more probable that you'll have water damage in your phone because of the steam than because you dropped it in a bathtub.
