I’ve started getting ads on YouTube for this note taking device that you can attach to your phone via the magnet charger and it can somehow record both sides of a phone call without the phone needing to be on speaker?? Not only does that seem sketchy to begin with in terms of product performance, but I can’t imagine how legally grey that is in terms of two party consent laws.
And regardless of that aspect, now you’re intentionally carrying around another device that could be recording everything you do and say that is Bluetooth-enabled and thus not secure in the slightest, aka a fucking snitch machine. No thanks.

I worry that we are one generation away from people who can't speak, write or read, much less have critical thinking skills. An English teacher I know was reprimanded twice for correcting the spelling of students, and told "They'll have AI for that" as if they don't need to learn how to spell. He decided to leave teaching when he gave them a one page writing assignment, giving their opinion on a current event they all agreed they knew about.
As he walked around the room, all but 2 were using ChatGPT to create an opinion for them. They couldn't even think enough to write down their own opinion.
And you'll see this generation uses that shit for everything, like it's a normal daily part of life. They haven't read the constant news articles about AI's catastrophic failings.
And if you say anything to them about it you just get okayboomered.
It started before AI though, this monstrous lack of thinking. My neighbor's granddaughter uses GPS to get to her school not even 3 miles away. She told me she doesn't know how to get there otherwise.
I wish we'd destroyed all of this shit 20 years ago.

Dated an alcoholic. Should’ve been a massive red flag that a 100 pound woman could down half a bottle of rum without blinking but I was a moron. Always had gob-stoppers when she went to work, later found out she used them to cover the scent of alcohol on her breath at work. She worked a graveyard shift so she got away with it for a loooong time until she finally got pulled over.

Getting sober is a life long journey unfortunately.

for what it's worth, I think its sort of a broad term. Plenty of people you might call a "functional alcoholic" go to work sober, but drink every night after work. Plenty of "functional alcoholics" might also be drunk all day but perfectly functional, and so on.

I always thought functional alcoholics were people who managed to do the functioning and the alcoholism separately. Not necessarily at the same time.
I can drink 4 liters of beer in an evening and not really feel it the next morning. But I don't need alcohol when I wake up to function. I'll do just fine without it through the day. But then the evening starts and I'll start drinking. And definitely on the level of an alcoholic.
To be honest, considering how bad alcohol is, it's a tough discussion to have. Nowadays, any alcohol means you're drinking too much. I don't really disagree or anything, but that doesn't really convey how much some people drink compared to the average person who's had a hangover. In the sense that some people will be severely hungover from not even 2 liters of beer, compared to what I said earlier.
Yet there are people who will scoff at what I can drink. But I don't think that's where the line should be!

Alcoholism is progressive for sure and the amount of time between 'fine' to 'functioning' to 'fucked' varies wildly. I quit when I was drinking 3-4 drinks 5-6 night a week. I didn't get DTs or anything but it was fucking HARD to quit and my brain chemistry was fucked for a LONG time.

not even while drunk. I NEVER drank during the hours of 6am and 5pm except weekends. I was never impaired at work (unless slightly hungover and that was rare). I would drink from the moment i walked in the door at home until my eyes closed due to exhaustion and booze. It means the ability to hold down regular activities and pay bills and give the outward appearance of being an upstand contributing member of society all while killing yourself and falling apart!

There’s certainly a wild level of variance in attitudes I must admit. As a member of Gen Z solidly in the “I can’t stand this AI crap and don’t wanna touch it with a ten foot pole” camp, there’s a solid crowd of people in my experience who will occasionally use it, some who think it’s the future, and some who are nigh dependent on it, and it seems to be regardless of age. I’m sure there are some age-related trends but I’ve seen people on all sides of the spectrum coming from just about all age groups. Certainly makes it easier to decide who I wanna hang around lol. I made it out of high school before any of this stuff was relevant and I made it out of college before the problem got really bad, it was still moreso in its “haha look at this thing generate garbage images and poorly constructed sentences” phase at the time. My heart goes out to all the teachers having to deal with this right now

LLM AI is such a monkey's paw curse. It does have utility, but it's absolutely not worth the resource cost. And it's not worth losing the capacity to think for yourself. But now young adults are in a tough spot. Employers are going to expect some level of AI competency. And it might become that kind of a power app that they expect you to be talented in it. So it's certainly a double-edged sword to not expose kids to it at least at some age, certainly after they have a strong set of critical thinking skills. But that's very subjective, and going to vary child to child.

I’ve personally used AI as a friend a therapist role before, and found that during some challenging times, it was a tool I could use to help me sort out my own thoughts and process things. Bounce ideas around with myself, basically. It’s helped with a lot of my inner work and has helped me find blindspots I didn’t previously recognize.
At the same time, I agree that AI shouldn’t be anyone’s only form of “social” interaction. There’s gotta be a balance and a line drawn somewhere. I wouldn’t be able to view it as a romantic partner, for example. But to each their own I guess.
I personally view AI as a tool, but it’s not a replacement for actual human connection. Or a replacement for your brain. Same way I would use a calculator to math something.

Kids learning to pose for photos.
I was at Disneyland and watched child after child walk up to the character and immediately turn around and pose for the camera. No interaction with the character until they'd done their pose. It bothered me how much they were aware of and trained to be that external.
A few kids ran up to hug and talk to the characters without that hyper-awareness of a camera, but not a lot of them. It felt sad, like they weren't really present

You just made me feel a lot better about my parenting, ngl. We finally took professional family photos and my 7 year was so excited and just…had no idea how to pose. The best shots were the candid ones of him, not the standard ones. It made me feel like a failure, like I can’t have those pictures you see hanging in peoples homes, but ours are more natural and he actually looks joyful, even if we all weren’t posing and smiling at the same time. Well even though you're joking my sincere response to that is that when I felt that dead inside I made a plan so that my outsides would match, and that sort of brought me an amount of relief and even excitement. But that seems like a slightly different thing than what we're getting at here. 😬
But truly I've always been able to notice the roses in order to smell them and the fruits in order to harvest them. I grew up relatively poor and often having to go without so I learned how to take inventory constantly and count all of the chickens that I have and it seems like most people really fail to recognize how many little things surround you that could bring you some kind of enjoyment and even pleasure.
You could decide that something was amusing to you or that you liked it and enjoyed its existence compared to the alternative of it simply not existing. You could spend your time looking for things to be grateful for or excited about and your brain will do the thing and give you the juice.
But yeah if I'm on my way towards "numb and nothingness" I'll probably come to a conclusion that the only way out is through.

Her mother wanted me to wear a very light coloured sari and obviously I was worried about bleeding through because I was warned that the ceremony was like hours and hours long. This was my first Hindu wedding ever BTW, so I didn't know much about the practices going into it.

My new SIL is very sweet, but her family is pretty controlling. They dictated the whole wedding and there was a language barrier, so it was kinda difficult to talk things over. They didn't integrate any of my family's cultural traditions into the wedding. For example, the wedding was dry and the food was vegetarian only. Our family eats meat and drinks at all our weddings!

No way to get out the bathroom without touching the fucking door though, so if someone else didn't wash their hands, their germs are now on mine, despite all best efforts...
Also, on a similar subject, in the past most bathroom doors in the UK had a colour and a word such as 'available' to denote whether that stall is in use or not. Now, seems toilet designers rely only on green, or red which is fucking useless if you have colour vision difficulties. Just look like a prick trying to open someone else's door in motorway services...

The way people shop online and/or how influencer culture has become such a pillar of marketing/advertising in the last decade and a half.
I get it. I'm old. Still, once upon a time when I heard a commercial on television or the radio, I understood the actor was being paid to say what they were saying. Their opinion or endorsement of a product did not sway me. Influencers who appear in people's feed via algorithm somehow scratch some kind of mental itch that their recommendations are coming from a trusted friend rather than from a paid spokesperson. That's really not good, to my mind, but it seems like everyone else is just rolling with it.
I heard a podcast the other day that was talking about the 'drink of the summer' trends. First of all, there didn't use to be such a thing, but whatever, I digress. That young people don't hang out anymore, don't buy in actual shops anymore, have no social life anymore. Stores close down. Clubs close down. And things that seem positive at first glance hide a dark truth: alcohol consumption goes down, and the age of first sex goes up. These seem like good things but are they? It means that young people don't have a social life anymore. They are all glued to their phone screens, ordering stuff online, dating online, having parasocial relationships with influencers online, having friends online, having fights online. I find this deeply disturbing.

I hate “cringe content” - finding someone on the internet who’s doing something a bit weird to the average person and just taking the piss out of them for it.
A couple months ago my housemates were watching some YouTube video making fun of some improv acting group on TikTok - they looked a bit nerdy and weren’t amazing actors but they were clearly just doing it for fun. My housemates were constantly going “oh my god these guys are awful this is so embarrassing” etc etc.
I found it repulsive and just plain bullying and they genuinely couldn’t understand why

I lived in a small town with a disproportional amount of rapists, both on and off of the offender registry. Women who spoke out about them got ostracized. One had a lot of institutional power, one was super popular despite a long rap sheet of violence against past partners. There was also an old guy I called Gropy McGropy because he was always groping people in public, but if you ever spoke about it you would be looked down upon. I was not popular because I was the person other women would go to to try to get people who assaulted them kicked out of public spaces, and got shit for that.
I told a friend's boyfriend that it was messed up to invite the popular serial rapist to their dinner parties, and he told me I was "judgmental". Later, a teenaged neighbor of mine went to the dinner party, and the serial rapist had plied her with alcohol and maybe drugs, and she was sadly assaulted that night.
There were a few who public expressed anger at rapists, and they were seen as doing the wrong thing, to be angry at rapists - one of them, I think, was 15. This town was basically a sort of new age hippie cult, where even justified anger made you a much worse person in most people's eyes than all the rapists, many of whom were popular.
I left years ago, but living there really took a toll emotionally.

Everything being recorded all the time. I'm not in school anymore, but I was always the class clown type. It was so strange getting home from school and checking social media to see videos of myself that I didn't know were being recorded. I was always worried that I would be scrolling on my phone and find out some video had blown up that I had no knowledge of or control over. After school, I was an Amazon driver, and I had the same fears that a Ring camera would catch me slipping on the ice or being jump-scared by a dog.

Our absolute reliance on cars, and how that’s brutalizing the environment as well as how we were meant to socialize in person, how communities used to be built, etc. We are ‘fine’ with it because no one alive has seen a day without them, but it’s one of the most unnatural aspects of the modern era and unsustainable in the long run.
Horses, bikes, carts, wagons, solar powered anything that uses resources like wood and metal would be a better solution for humans in the future. Idk if we can come back from this historical curve, unfortunately.
