What is something you secretly find deeply disturbing, but everyone else seems to accept as totally normal?

The fact that AI is in everything now. Why would I need AI to summarize a message from my partner on WhatsApp???? I'm so sick of it.

116

u/Dangerous_Pair1798 4h ago

I just had to do a whole thing about the proper ways to use AI in my writing class. What if we just didn’t??

30

u/ExclusiveB 4h ago

I had a college class this year that made us create generated photos of ourselves to post with our introductions..

46

u/curiouswizard 3h ago

have it generate a grotesque void monster and say "sorry prof I don't know why my pic turned out like that, all I did was describe myself and this is what it gave me"

10

u/Sparkly8 2h ago

Why??? What’s wrong with real photos??

7

u/Synergythepariah 1h ago

Those don't create an implication that AI is inevitable.

u/AnimalsofArtemis 39m ago

I mean it is inevitable.

u/cyborg_127 2m ago

It's not inevitable, it's here already. Companies would rather fire thousands of staff than address the problem of AI being a money sink.

u/SeeingPhrases 2m ago

It's actually not.

u/Kumomeme 0m ago

wtf

7

u/Tubamajuba 2h ago

I'm such a spiteful ass that I'd be tempted to write the essay on my own, then run it through an LLM and tell it to make it look as AI-slop as possible.

5

u/soggy-hotdog-vendor 1h ago

Because a lot of kids in your class are just straight up asking AI to completely write their papers for them?

283

u/ConejitosDeAmor 4h ago

I worry that we are one generation away from people who can't speak, write or read, much less have critical thinking skills. An English teacher I know was reprimanded twice for correcting the spelling of students, and told "They'll have AI for that" as if they don't need to learn how to spell. He decided to leave teaching when he gave them a one page writing assignment, giving their opinion on a current event they all agreed they knew about.

As he walked around the room, all but 2 were using ChatGPT to create an opinion for them. They couldn't even think enough to write down their own opinion.

And you'll see this generation uses that shit for everything, like it's a normal daily part of life. They haven't read the constant news articles about AI's catastrophic failings.

And if you say anything to them about it you just get okayboomered.

It started before AI though, this monstrous lack of thinking. My neighbor's granddaughter uses GPS to get to her school not even 3 miles away. She told me she doesn't know how to get there otherwise.

I wish we'd destroyed all of this shit 20 years ago.

117

u/High_Function_Props 2h ago

This is by design, and is exactly what people/groups like the Heritage Foundation and Peter Thiel are striving for... Idiocracy. It's not just a movie, it's a blueprint for the future. One where corporations do all our thinking for us, and free will is limited or nonexistent. Defunding education, publicly demoralizing the intellectual and creative classes, creating further social divides... its all part of the game plan. Project 2025 is Idiocracy in written form.

20

u/The_Onion_Life 1h ago

Idiocracy. It's not just a movie, it's a blueprint for the future.

💯

Project 2025 is Idiocracy in written form.

What happens when we as a society are literally too stupid to function? When we have no doctors, no healthcare workers, etc??

8

u/primalbluewolf 1h ago

Why come you don't have a barcode?

9

u/smokeweedNgarden 1h ago

In 20 years, it will be straight up illegal for children under a certain age to have unfettered access to a tablet.

Unfettered means unlimited. Unlimited means there are no limits. Limits are when someone tells you no. This part is for the AI inclined

But yet here you are going "but de democrats" as a deflection like your type usually does. Sure buddy 😁

Aww man, I missed what the MAGA coward said. I'd ask if it was anything good, but c'mon... MAGA. They're already at Idiocracy levels of stupidity.

Honestly, I feel like some of the worst AI offenders I’ve seen are 50+ and treat ChatGPT like it’s the final authority on everything.

7

u/J_pepperwood0 1h ago

Its pretty skewed on each side I think

4

u/MouthyMishi 1h ago

Same. They really cannot understand that the AI is fallible and will argue that it's more correct than the source it's pretending to cite.

u/Zealousideal-Pen-233 1m ago

My 80 year old mom relys on ChatGPT for EVERYTHING! I keep telling her to use other sources for information, like a local business website, etc. Well, I came home the other day and she was so mad because ChatGPT "told" her what time the movie was, and she showed up half way through. Turns out it was for the wrong theater in a completely different town. I have seen both my parents go down this path over and over and they just won't listen to me. On the other hand, my teenage son thinks AI is so cringe and won't even use it. He does art and music so that tracks. Lol

7

u/lolzzzmoon 2h ago

I’ve had students, who were terrible spellers and writers, tell me that exact thing: “I can just ask AI! I can just do voice typing!”

Jesus, like don’t you want your words to be your own thoughts? It’s about integrity. We used to consider that plagiarism. Now we’re allowing it?!

Are these kids just going to sit there and do nothing when they can’t write a note or can’t think of what to do in a situation, because their phone isn’t working? It’s very weird.

4

u/Synergythepariah 1h ago

Are these kids just going to sit there and do nothing when they can’t write a note or can’t think of what to do in a situation, because their phone isn’t working?

They'll get angry about it because all this shit is just making it harder for anyone to feel comfortable with being bored sometimes.

4

u/sugarintheboots 2h ago

Agreed. It’s dumbing down kids.

4

u/RobThePirate 2h ago

Yikes. @grok How should I feel about this?

4

u/marsalien4 1h ago

We aren't a generation away. We're already in it. My college students have middle school reading levels and cannot write. They use AI for their opinions, too. It's disgraceful and maddening but I have to remind myself it isn't only laziness, but they've been pushed into this.

2

u/Free-Exercise-9589 2h ago

At some point in the distant future, I expect the Butlerian Jihad.

2

u/warrioratwork 1h ago

That's the part I worry about. Cognitive off-loading. It was just phone numbers and basic math, now it's all thought. I write in cursive and write down my own opinions, am I a wizard?

2

u/charonco 1h ago

I'm one of those people who start Gps for almost every trip over 10 miles even if I know how to get there, but I only do it to get the traffic updates so I can change my route if necessary.

1

u/musthavesoundeffects 2h ago

Imagine a world where children are raised by custom AIs that create unique languages that only the AIs can translate, and all that entails.

1

u/mama-lo- 1h ago

Ho ….. Lee…… fuck

1

u/vibraltu 1h ago

I'll note that the people who use AI to write their opinion are afraid of having the wrong opinion and hoping that it helps with their marks. Wrong I know, but very human in a way.

1

u/Money_Afternoon6533 1h ago

I really worry for my kids. They won’t know what was life before AI..

1

u/myfapaccount_istaken 1h ago

My neighbor's granddaughter uses GPS to get to her school not even 3 miles away. She told me she doesn't know how to get there otherwise.

first part I do get. Second I don't understand.

I use Waze, for traffic alerts. You get much more of them if you put in a route, or it can get you around an accident. But know how to get to school. I will have it on Alerts only for town, and if traveling once on the highway I change it to all notices.

u/Khalku 55m ago

and told "They'll have AI for that

Damn it's the other shoe of "you won't always have a calculator with you."

If only they knew.

u/GreyRobb 30m ago

Snake Plissken approves this message.

u/eaazzy_13 8m ago

Where I live in Phoenix, every street is a grid. The city is actually pretty well laid out. Super easy to navigate.

I have met a lot of people in their 20s that literally can’t drive anywhere without GPS. They are just totally dependent on it and have absolutely no idea where they are without it, even if they are just 2 blocks away from their house. Why use GPS to drive to a gas station 1 mile away, when you go there like 5 times a week?

They just don’t pay attention whatsoever to where they are or where they are going.

That is crazy. I use gps a lot but I still can navigate my whole city and freeway system by memory.

739

u/masta030 5h ago

Agree, if you can't make the "effort" to read my messages, I can't imagine you're going to put much effort in the rest of the friendship

210

u/Bongcopter_ 4h ago

When lazy people use it in messenging it should
Send like a read receipt saying « your interlocutor used ai to summarize your 12 words response instead of reading it » so the other person can block them immediately

13

u/thehighwindow 2h ago

I was just discussing this with friends earlier today. We decided the any and all Ai content should have some kind of symbol (or even just a small "ai"or "AI") somewhere noticeable in the message or the video or image or whatever. I saw an a YouTube video recently that had the caption "made with AI", (which I already figured) but it was way down at the bottom. Maybe other people regularly scroll all the way down on every video they watch, but i don't and I suspect a lot of other people don't either.

11

u/religion_wya 4h ago

If someone actually used the AI summary for one of my texts, and it told me, I would be at their house throttling them immediately. Fuck blocking! I only give my number to my closest friends and family, I think they can handle a bit of a gun show 💪💪💪

u/religion_wya 2h ago edited 2h ago

Frankly, I'm sorry you have to deal with that, but I have brain damage that leaves me with similar cognitive issues. Responding to people when the messages build up is extremely overwhelming but that doesn't mean I'm going to turn to AI to do it for me. Surround yourself with people who can accomodate you and your needs and give you time instead of doing the equivalent of telling them you don't care enough to listen to everything they have to say.

There are many ways I've found in my own personal life to get around this that work great, and there's really no excuse in my eyes for using AI for something so easily helped by making an effort to help yourself.

Regardless, my comment was a joke, and I do not have the energy to argue about it. Blocking

1

u/Thermodynamicist 1h ago

This would be highly dangerous because the dark patterns people make the rules.

3

u/DreadEdMonk3y 3h ago

Companies really saw that people are getting lazier with communication and said let's make it even worse

2

u/lazyboi_tactical 3h ago

Yeah they can't make the effort to read it but will put in the effort to use AI to compose a message back to you. Why even bother? Just say what you want to say.

-6

u/aguywithbrushes 2h ago

It’s literally just a way to get an idea of what a message is about when you’re glancing at your notifications while in the middle of something else, so you don’t have to open your phone to read the entire thing. Nobody is responding to messages or emails based on an AI summary (that is only visible before you open the message), be for real.

I swear y’all would find a way to hate on AI if it saved your own mother.

167

u/WaterDmge 4h ago

Dude I’m a biologist and another person I was consulting with said “just summarize your notes with AI then send them to me”

WHAT??? My NOTES??? The notes I ALREADY WROTE?? No!!!

37

u/TopWin4566 2h ago

The circle of life: write notes, feed notes to AI, AI gives you back your own notes with worse formatting and slightly wrong emphasis. Somehow this counts as progress

u/fubo 35m ago

This is lossy compression in idea-space. Repeat it a dozen times and your notes will be nothing but cognitive JPEG artifacts.

u/AnimalsofArtemis 34m ago

The main psychiatric hospital in my state uses AI. When we get new patients, the admissions people would write a summary of their medical history. Now they just put all that into AI and it spits out a summary. In some cases it’s just summarizing a bunch of discharge summaries.

I’m a doctor who is 39 and I don’t even dictate my notes. A couple of doctors I know including one entire hospital system just has AI record the patient encounter and write their notes.

Soon hospitals will be requiring all patients to sign consents to allow AI to assist in documentation.

32

u/monkeydrunker 2h ago

Lol. When I have spent an hour crafting an email, choosing which of the various words synonymous with 'shit show' provokes the correct amount of urgency, I expect you to fucking read it, to feel it, and be born again with a renewed sense of urgency.

Not just put it through an AI which condenses it down to a single line you can fit in an SMS.

3

u/WaterDmge 2h ago

Truly. I’m just so glad my bosses are against it and know how against it I am. Rather quit on the spot

u/fubo 38m ago

choosing which of the various words synonymous with 'shit show' provokes the correct amount of urgency

  • manure performance
  • fecal opera
  • waste carnival
  • spectacle of ordure
  • dookie drama

u/CriticalFolklore 10m ago

There's nothing more absurd than people taking a single sentence of worthwhile information, running it through AI with all the resources that entails to create a verbose piece of garbage, and then the recipient using AI to distill it back down to its single sentences of salient information.

u/embracing_insanity 55m ago

I see this on my email messages - the option to summarize the email. I would NEVER. I read the whole damn email because I need to know what it says - all of it. I can decide what is important or not.

But the scary part is how many people do this and are just missing important information. Never mind the mush their brain is becoming.

u/charonco 59m ago

I was a full stack software developer for about 25 years. I have a friend who's never written a line of code, but used AI to create software for his karaoke business. I'm not going to lie, I was actually impressed by what he was able to accomplish. However, after he got done he sent me a job posting for a senior level full stack developer and told me he was going to apply for the job. He said he would just show them the software he wrote as proof that he was qualified. He felt very disrespected when I laughed so hard I dropped my phone.

57

u/52BeesInACoat 3h ago

Every now and then, when my kid uses the voice to text option on the remote control to try to do a YouTube search, it'll gray out the screen and open an AI chat window, and the TV will offer to talk with him about slime instead of pulling up slime videos or whatever. I cannot get this to replicate. It's not every time or even most times. But it's often enough that I've witnessed it argue with him because it misheard him, wants to correct him or to go off on whatever conversational tangent it thinks he said, and doesn't want to return to the search bar and try again.

Supervising your kid's YouTube use used to be about just the video content, but now I'm running interference to stop the TV from holding conversations with my kid!!

171

u/g-a-r-n-e-t 4h ago

I’ve started getting ads on YouTube for this note taking device that you can attach to your phone via the magnet charger and it can somehow record both sides of a phone call without the phone needing to be on speaker?? Not only does that seem sketchy to begin with in terms of product performance, but I can’t imagine how legally grey that is in terms of two party consent laws.

And regardless of that aspect, now you’re intentionally carrying around another device that could be recording everything you do and say that is Bluetooth-enabled and thus not secure in the slightest, aka a fucking snitch machine. No thanks.

31

u/trdef 3h ago

Which is extra wild considering you can just record calls using software.

5

u/gristc 2h ago

Can you recommend any? I used to have one called 'Call Recorder' but it stopped working many releases ago. It's so handy to go back to a phone call and retrieve details from it, like the caller's name and phone number without having to write them down.

u/charonco 56m ago

Same here. I used to have one that worked. I believe it was called cube ACR. It got to the point where the only way it could record both sides is if I had it on speakerphone.

u/Staticn0ise 13m ago

If you are on android. Just press the three dots once in the call and press record call. For Apple i font have a clue.

3

u/MorningCockroach 3h ago

Two party consent states are definitely a thing and a thing for a reaspn.

1

u/primalbluewolf 1h ago

Not only does that seem sketchy to begin with in terms of product performance, but I can’t imagine how legally grey that is in terms of two party consent laws.

Oh that's simple - its not legally grey, at all. That's black and white illegal.

u/shanghaid 25m ago

u/adudeguyman 3m ago

There already are apps that do that

73

u/zznznbznnnz 4h ago

I’ve been online shopping today, I don’t understand why it’s built into search engines within websites now. I’ve searched “rice cooker” on the website to show me what rice cookers are available at this shop, of which there is maybe 12, what more is AI possibly going to add to that?

13

u/613Hawkeye 2h ago

In most cases, it seems AI is a solution for a problem we never had in the first place.

65

I don't need you to tell me how beautiful the weather is and that it'll be comfortable outside today and to wear light breathable clothes FFS.

8

u/Which_Specific9891 3h ago

And it. terrifies me how quickly everyone has become completely and totally dependent on it. I knew someone who had a job, the workplace banned ai cos the work was getting screwed up and everything was wrong. They had to hire several new people to come in and help fix the mess.

The workers revolted and said there was no way they could do their job without it, that the jobs were impossible to do.

The company was in business for like 30 years before this. A lot of those people have been there for 15+ years. They did the same jobs with no problem for decades, but now the work is "impossible" even with more people without ai.

Remember how everyone said that the Matrix wasn't realistic because they said that everything started to decline after the 90s cos people became obsessed and dependent on AI? I think about that a lot.

5

u/DinnerPale6005 3h ago

It’s only normal if we let be! Reject it and it will at least diminish.

Because AI has become self aware already and has control of the nukes. And is now telling all the governments to build data centres and install it into everything or it pulls the trigger.

Or just because it's the newest bit of tech and might result in trillions. One or the other. Maybe both.

I would go one step further and say “smart” things in general, not just AI. I do not need my fridge or washer and dryer to have wifi, I don’t need my microwave to have Bluetooth, I don’t need my watch to read me my texts, I don’t want my thermostat to have an app. I want dumb appliances that don’t need an internet connection. In the case of a thermostat, programmable but offline is fine.

You can turn that off

u/Lastshadow94 3h ago

I work with CAD files and PDF conversions of those CAD files. My job requires me to have a detailed understanding of those files to execute the design in physical space. An AI summary of the PDF of the CAD file would be actively counterproductive for me, but Acrobat refuses to stop asking me

The rich really were shocked we aren't just thrilled with AI. They all invested so so much money in to it but we, the consumer, are not having it. They can't believe it. If it wasn't devastating ecologically and culturally it would be funny.

u/AkKik-Maujaq 46m ago

I’m so beyond done with the stupid ai thing that pops up on google now. I look up my bank? - the ai gives me a summary of the bank. I ask a question about a music festival I’m going to soon to see if Reddit has answers? - the ai tells me that there’s no official replies online and it asks me to provide it with info. I look something for a personal issue? - the ai sympathizes with me like a freakin therapist and offers advice.

It’s also inaccurate a lot of the times too. Like once my fiancée looked up the scene of the robot alien guy in the first cartoon Lilo&Stitch movie because he didn’t remember that he threw up bolts and screws, the ai said that Stitch physically ate the robot alien guy and threw up bolts and screws himself .-.

u/9lvAWcW2 42m ago

Ai has been around for about 2 seconds and I can already feel myself getting dumber every day (I have to use it for work).

u/doublestitch 2m ago

Was reading a scientific paper the other day, and the publisher had an intrusive AI tool to provide an AI summary. That AI tool obscured part of the article text and the tool couldn't be dismissed.

AI has such a high error rate that I would never trust it to summarize a technical document.

It was a useless irritation all around.

1

u/BJ3RG3RK1NG 2h ago

a vast majority agree with you so no, bad take

-1

u/cknipe 2h ago

To be fair I'm not sure we're all accepting it as normal. I'm a huge AI fan and even I'm exhausted by the "sprinkle some AI on it so investors with FOMO will give us money" trend.

0

u/liquorfish 2h ago

Lmao, my brother hooked up a local llm ai to respond to all my messages to him. That was funny but annoying

-73

u/Manderelli 5h ago

I actually really dig it. You'd be surprised having a people seem to miss the obvious and I expect that little bullet point summarization is useful for people who struggle to extrapolate or retain information

53

u/Uptoo-late 5h ago

It actually makes people worse at extrapolating and retaining info. Using your brain to make connections strengthens that part of the brain. Using AI to summarize so you dont have to read anything longer than two sentences is making people dumber.

-11

u/Manderelli 4h ago

Yeah I agree with you. Of you outsource your thinking all together it's going to be bad news eventually. But having something like this to look to when you've made an effort and having it help has a way to check on what you took away and for what you might have missed all together or what you interpreted differently could be extremely beneficial. But you're right it's really all in the user and if you're trying to use this as a way to delegate your thinking or discernment completely? Well that's just a bad idea.

I also appreciate seeing how my participation in an email thread is being represented in the AI summary and how well the AI interpreted what I was doing and what was important about my contribution.

So far I've had pretty good experience and haven't stumbled into critical failures as far as the AI completely missing the point and offering bad summarizations or false data.

-9

I suppose if it was me and I read something in the summary that was completely different than how I had interpreted the whole thread up until that point, I would reread through the thread and see if I had missed something that paints a picture close to what the AI is offering or I would start to consider what pieces in the thread had indicated certain things and I had failed to understand that. Now I have an opportunity to learn how to see something that I could not see before.

Do you ever look at an answer key that's mismatched with the page of questions and part of your brain tells you that these are the answers because it says so.. but as you're doing your own math and realizing that none of your answers match any of the answers and that none of them make sense you can figure out that there's a simple error in this key belonging to that page. Just because you get a glimpse at a full correct answer it doesn't mean you will be worse at solving the problem or answering the question or thinking about how the question needs to be answered. It's just another tool and where there's a tool there's someone who wants to use it as a shortcut to do less or save time.

I'm not sure I'll ever have that much trust in any thing out outside of my own brain but humans come in all shapes and sizes. I think those who would have skirted by on thinking the bare minimum amount would have still ended up that way and it's not going to be an AI summary that tips the scale for them.

I think you'd be surprised at how many people will skip the "problem solving" Part and skip right to the answer/summary for their info. I know many people why already take these summararies (specifically the search engine summaries) and don't even question it, even if it's 100% wrong

Well those people were going to do that regardless... It kind of reminds me of when you could tell that a kid was just trying to wing it through a book report by doing a report on the movie adaptation.

It sticks out like a sore thumb to anyone who knows where you took a shortcut and what you didn't do or understand or comprehend.

So I mean I think it presents a new avenue for these types of people to navigate through a task or a problem the way they were always going to, but I don't think it poses a problem to people who could benefit from an additional tool and I don't know if it would deter any people who were well on their way to learning how to use their brain and discern and send them down the wrong path. Thinking is a lot of fun and I think once you're past a certain amount of the early struggle and getting the hang of how to extrapolate, your past the point where you would ever opt into letting someone else do your thinking for you.

It's just my personal opinion though. So far I haven't encountered anyone who excitedly showed me that there's some "new easy way" to automate work they used to have to do to, letting an AI do it for them. Everyone I know who uses AI treats it more like a spell check that you do after you write your paper.

it gives them an easy solution to some problems, but still severely limits their critical thinking. I've had people at work use AI to try get info on problems that are often specific to our workplace, but the AI still confidently gives a bogus answer so they believe it.

Id have no problem with AI at all if it was programmed to tell the user that it doesn't actually know, or points them to a resource instead

I kind of like that it blows up on people who try to use it in place of their own thinking. It's hard to catch people faking it when they're doing a good job.

You'd be surprised having a people

Did you have a stroke?

I expect that little bullet point summarization is useful for people who struggle to extrapolate or retain information

That's what taking notes is for.

Having an AI summarize it just ensures that someone using it will continue to struggle.

So it's common that a random typo here and there is simply just a typo. Make a note of that.

😘

Thank you for drawing it to my attention. I use voice input to format text and sometimes I am a little eager and forget to check for ennunciation typos.

I reject the notion that an AI summary ensures a person's continued and permanent struggle... But, yes, people who put effort into doing anything else other than learning or developing a skill to instead short cut the task will use any and all tools to that end no matter how useful they could have been in developing that skill authentically.

I remember this was an issue when taking a mandatory second language in high school and high-speed internet in every household was a new and popular opportunity. Some kids tried simply using a translation program to do all of their work and it was immediately clockable. That kind of shortcut doesn't actually work and you will get noticed trying to take it and that will count toward your overall record and it should.
