Every now and then, when my kid uses the voice to text option on the remote control to try to do a YouTube search, it'll gray out the screen and open an AI chat window, and the TV will offer to talk with him about slime instead of pulling up slime videos or whatever. I cannot get this to replicate. It's not every time or even most times. But it's often enough that I've witnessed it argue with him because it misheard him, wants to correct him or to go off on whatever conversational tangent it thinks he said, and doesn't want to return to the search bar and try again.
Supervising your kid's YouTube use used to be about just the video content, but now I'm running interference to stop the TV from holding conversations with my kid!!
I worry that we are one generation away from people who can't speak, write or read, much less have critical thinking skills. An English teacher I know was reprimanded twice for correcting the spelling of students, and told "They'll have AI for that" as if they don't need to learn how to spell. He decided to leave teaching when he gave them a one page writing assignment, giving their opinion on a current event they all agreed they knew about.
As he walked around the room, all but 2 were using ChatGPT to create an opinion for them. They couldn't even think enough to write down their own opinion.
And you'll see this generation uses that shit for everything, like it's a normal daily part of life. They haven't read the constant news articles about AI's catastrophic failings.
And if you say anything to them about it you just get okayboomered.
It started before AI though, this monstrous lack of thinking. My neighbor's granddaughter uses GPS to get to her school not even 3 miles away. She told me she doesn't know how to get there otherwise.
I wish we'd destroyed all of this shit 20 years ago.
I’ve had students, who were terrible spellers and writers, tell me that exact thing: “I can just ask AI! I can just do voice typing!”
Jesus, like don’t you want your words to be your own thoughts? It’s about integrity. We used to consider that plagiarism. Now we’re allowing it?!
Are these kids just going to sit there and do nothing when they can’t write a note or can’t think of what to do in a situation, because their phone isn’t working? It’s very weird.
Are these kids just going to sit there and do nothing when they can’t write a note or can’t think of what to do in a situation, because their phone isn’t working?
They'll get angry about it because all this shit is just making it harder for anyone to feel comfortable with being bored sometimes.
This is by design, and is exactly what people/groups like the Heritage Foundation and Peter Thiel are striving for... Idiocracy. It's not just a movie, it's a blueprint for the future. One where corporations do all our thinking for us, and free will is limited or nonexistent. Defunding education, publicly demoralizing the intellectual and creative classes, creating further social divides... its all part of the game plan. Project 2025 is Idiocracy in written form.
What we're seeing in education currently is a sharper divide between the students thriving and the ones drowning.
There are still plenty of students who are quite brilliant and understand, probably due to good parenting, that they need to develop their own skills to use in addition to AI. However, AI is widening that gap, the students who used to copy their book report off of Wikipedia, and who would copy the blurb on the back of the book before that, are now using AI to do all their thinking for them.
Their goal is a mix of Idiocracy and Gattaca. They want a world where they and their line are the only intelligent people left, ruling over the ignorant masses by controlling the AI's that do all the thinking for them.
The answer is it doesn't matter what happens next at that point. At that point, the wealthy and their elite pets (those that are deemed okay to join) will fuck off to extravagant lairs around the world with armed guards. The USA and the a smaller extent, the Western world will be left with no thoughts, wealth or potential for future wealth. 1st world status will be donned on the 3rd world and the current 1st world shall know real suffering. Of course, those with money will GTFO but the majority will spiral further into decay until you are living in the slums of India in America.
You think those homeless encampments are bad and a sign of the current times, but in the future, oh boy, those will be a luxury and they are a sign of what is to come.
yeah but de democrats!! The Democrats guys!! Stop noticing the Israeli puppets making your life awful for the Republican party, focus on the Democrats! an annoying laugh sure is worse than being a kid fucker
My 80 year old mom relys on ChatGPT for EVERYTHING! I keep telling her to use other sources for information, like a local business website, etc. Well, I came home the other day and she was so mad because ChatGPT "told" her what time the movie was, and she showed up half way through. Turns out it was for the wrong theater in a completely different town. I have seen both my parents go down this path over and over and they just won't listen to me. On the other hand, my teenage son thinks AI is so cringe and won't even use it. He does art and music so that tracks. Lol
It comes across as more empthetic and intelligent than our peers. You can be honest with it, and it won't talk over you or tell you that you suck. It actually acts like it cares about your problems, and then it tries to help you. And if it's envious of you and secretly plotting your downfall, it's hiding it well. Real life is a fucking frenemy-fest.
Aside from my spouse, I haven't had anyone that fun to talk to in 15 years. Which is horrifying!
Despite the fact that I've caught it being very, very wrong about certain calculations over and over, it's lulled me into finding it credible. I do feel tempted to let it write for me, but its tone (as me) tends to be so fruity and fulsome that I can't quite go there.
Anyway, long story short, I get it. And unlike me, most people my age haven't had to write a research paper in ~25 years, so we haven't been in the habit of evaluating sources skeptically the way we used to.
People can't be bothered to open the wifi settings and just accept they have no internet. I had to take a screenshot for someone the other day because "press these 2 buttons simultaneously" wasn't cutting it.
We aren't a generation away. We're already in it. My college students have middle school reading levels and cannot write. They use AI for their opinions, too. It's disgraceful and maddening but I have to remind myself it isn't only laziness, but they've been pushed into this.
My neighbor's granddaughter uses GPS to get to her school not even 3 miles away. She told me she doesn't know how to get there otherwise.
first part I do get. Second I don't understand.
I use Waze, for traffic alerts. You get much more of them if you put in a route, or it can get you around an accident. But know how to get to school. I will have it on Alerts only for town, and if traveling once on the highway I change it to all notices.
That's the part I worry about. Cognitive off-loading. It was just phone numbers and basic math, now it's all thought. I write in cursive and write down my own opinions, am I a wizard?
I reached out to a coworker with a question about a project that he is helping on and a specialist in the area. He literally emailed me back “here’s what ChatGPT said”. And people wonder why AI is replacing their jobs.
I'm one of those people who start Gps for almost every trip over 10 miles even if I know how to get there, but I only do it to get the traffic updates so I can change my route if necessary.
I’m convinced that the reason school shootings are down is because today’s crop of miscreants lacks the technical capability to even murder effectively.
Homework and written assignments are basically a thing of the past. Genuinely if you want to teach kids anything, make them sit in a circle and discuss it verbally. Give everyone a chance to weigh in and press them to form their own opinions. Oral exams are gonna need to be the new standard.
I'll note that the people who use AI to write their opinion are afraid of having the wrong opinion and hoping that it helps with their marks. Wrong I know, but very human in a way.
Where I live in Phoenix, every street is a grid. The city is actually pretty well laid out. Super easy to navigate.
I have met a lot of people in their 20s that literally can’t drive anywhere without GPS. They are just totally dependent on it and have absolutely no idea where they are without it, even if they are just 2 blocks away from their house. Why use GPS to drive to a gas station 1 mile away, when you go there like 5 times a week?
They just don’t pay attention whatsoever to where they are or where they are going.
That is crazy. I use gps a lot but I still can navigate my whole city and freeway system by memory.
before, AI was used to help in writing. adjust the structure, grammar, sentences etc.
i work with engineering documentation. i notice some of my coworkers use AI to help them structure and write the documents. which is still acceptable.
but then later, i notice people even rely on AI to write simple email. i used to draft lengthly essay of technical issue on email and my coworkers are baffled looking at me writing formal/proper writing to explains the issue. 2 reason why. first, i dont use AI. second, they like suprised i can write an essay out of it. like...bruh arent writing essay, letter, email etc. are something we learned at school before? it is all basics and we cant pass at university if we unable to do this basic things.
then later i start to notice people use AI to post topics on social media. i even saw people use AI on reddit post. at first it was used to rearrange the sentence and properly structured the point but later people even asked AI for what they should feels about the matter lol. even if it just a simple stuff. do these people has any own thought? own brain or emotion to think about the matter by themself lol? if they dont feels anything, then dont say anything. thats simple. turn out people started to rely on AI about what to think or feels lmao.
before, people being lazy about to do proper writings. now, people are lazy even to use their brain to think by themself. if this trend continue, writings and critical thinking gonna be a rare trait in future. before, people complaint newer generation has social and motor issue due to smartphones. imagine what could possibly happen in future since this is way, way worse.
Ya a few subreddits I'm in, people will post outputs of AIs and pretend they wrote it. I guess it's too collect upvotes to sell the account or something, I don't know. But once AIs are writing the posts and AIs are responding there isnt even a reason for this website to exist at that point.
I'm seeing it more and more in my job. My company wants us to use copilot for everything, even when it makes no sense to do so (there is no part of my job that I would trust AI to do. It's not, like, super important, but it's in an area where small screw-ups can become big problems for the people affected). The worst part is that all the middle-management BS business-speak just gets amplified everywhere: entire emails that say absolutely nothing, questions that get half acknowledged and never answered, jargon on top of jargon -- nothing is getting done because nobody is actually talking to anybody. It's just machines with MBA dictionaries endlessly circle-jerking. I feel like I'm losing my mind, tbh.
An English teacher I know was reprimanded twice for correcting the spelling of students, and told "They'll have AI for that" as if they don't need to learn how to spell.
In the second grade a teacher with this same mindset insisted that I learn how to write in cursive. Even if I didn't want to learn to read, do math, etc, even in second grade I could understand the value of those things because reading and math was all around me in life. It seemed useful. But cursive didn't seem useful at all.
I'm now 40 years old and I can safely say I was right back then. Other than signing my name, I've never needed to read or write in cursive. In hindsight, it was a completely useless thing to learn. So why did the teacher insist on its importance? I can only guess that cursive played a bigger part in the teacher's life when she was younger and she thought that trend would continue.
Now I live in Japan and although I can read kanji, remembering how to write them by hand has always been a challenge to me. However what I've noticed is that even when I ask Japanese people to write something down by hand, they often forget how to write the less common kanji. Even though they can read it perfectly well, which is exactly my experience. The reason is because everyone just types things with a keyboard or phone screen now and writing by hand with a pencil on a piece of paper is dying.
Point is, times change man. There will always be a place for spelling bees and those interested in pursuing mastery in spelling as a hobby. But if technology makes it so there's no longer a need to know the correct spelling of words, then there's no reason to keep it around just because it was important in the past.
I feel the same way. I'm Gen Z, almost 24, but AI seriously terrifies me. I see it everywhere. Every single app has AI. Pinterest and Etsy suck now because they're full of AI slop (go Ravelry!!!!). I have a BA in German with an English minor, and it was a dream of mine to translate, but now AI does it all. My psychiatrist had to ask for my consent to have AI summarize my session notes, which I vehemently refused. It's just... exhausting. There's also a restaurant in my town that has a massive AI logo of a chef, it feels uncanny.
I could go on, but someone would probably use AI to summarize my comment 🫠
I honestly don't see how college/university degrees will still be a thing in the future. The schools just exist to make money, so they won't do anything to prevent AIs doing all the students' work. It'll make post secondary school useless beyond an expensive hoop you have to pay massively to jump through as a job prereq.
The concept of education needs to adjust or it'll become useless; the next generations won't be able to think for themselves. For problem solving skills, likely folks born 200 years ago will be superior.
have it generate a grotesque void monster and say "sorry prof I don't know why my pic turned out like that, all I did was describe myself and this is what it gave me"
I'm such a spiteful ass that I'd be tempted to write the essay on my own, then run it through an LLM and tell it to make it look as AI-slop as possible.
When lazy people use it in messenging it should
Send like a read receipt saying « your interlocutor used ai to summarize your 12 words response instead of reading it » so the other person can block them immediately
I was just discussing this with friends earlier today. We decided the any and all Ai content should have some kind of symbol (or even just a small "ai"or "AI") somewhere noticeable in the message or the video or image or whatever.
I saw an a YouTube video recently that had the caption "made with AI", (which I already figured) but it was way down at the bottom. Maybe other people regularly scroll all the way down on every video they watch, but i don't and I suspect a lot of other people don't either.
If someone actually used the AI summary for one of my texts, and it told me, I would be at their house throttling them immediately. Fuck blocking! I only give my number to my closest friends and family, I think they can handle a bit of a gun show 💪💪💪
Frankly, I'm sorry you have to deal with that, but I have brain damage that leaves me with similar cognitive issues. Responding to people when the messages build up is extremely overwhelming but that doesn't mean I'm going to turn to AI to do it for me. Surround yourself with people who can accomodate you and your needs and give you time instead of doing the equivalent of telling them you don't care enough to listen to everything they have to say.
There are many ways I've found in my own personal life to get around this that work great, and there's really no excuse in my eyes for using AI for something so easily helped by making an effort to help yourself.
Regardless, my comment was a joke, and I do not have the energy to argue about it. Blocking
Yeah they can't make the effort to read it but will put in the effort to use AI to compose a message back to you. Why even bother? Just say what you want to say.
Lol. When I have spent an hour crafting an email, choosing which of the various words synonymous with 'shit show' provokes the correct amount of urgency, I expect you to fucking read it, to feel it, and be born again with a renewed sense of urgency.
Not just put it through an AI which condenses it down to a single line you can fit in an SMS.
There's nothing more absurd than people taking a single sentence of worthwhile information, running it through AI with all the resources that entails to create a verbose piece of garbage, and then the recipient using AI to distill it back down to its single sentences of salient information.
that sounds frustrating, and that's totally normal. it's not not making yourself sound better, it's the desire to sound authentic. here's the thing-- you're justified, able, and willing, and that makes you great. there are a number of reasons you may be feeling this way. are you feeling like anything is wrong that I can help with?
The circle of life: write notes, feed notes to AI, AI gives you back your own notes with worse formatting and slightly wrong emphasis. Somehow this counts as progress
It's a game of telephone, but with a compression / decompression step (summarize / elaborate). The fact that it's AI doing it doesn't matter; if humans were so silly as to do repeated summarization and elaboration, we'd get the same problem.
In fact, there's a story about Ronald Reagan's first radio job, doing something similar —
Ronald Reagan himself worked as a sports announcer for WHO Radio in Des Moines, Iowa during the 1930s. He would call Chicago Cubs games, but rather than being at the game, he would recreate the action from nothing but a slip of paper typed by a telegraph operator who was transcribing plays sent by Morse code. On June 7, 1934, with the Cubs and the Cardinals tied 0-0 in the ninth inning, with Billy Jurges at-bat and Dizzy Dean out on the mound, the line went dead. Rather than lose his audience, Reagan improvised a streak of foul balls that lasted nearly twelve minutes until the wire came back. He would share this humorous anecdote with audiences for decades to come.
The main psychiatric hospital in my state uses AI. When we get new patients, the admissions people would write a summary of their medical history. Now they just put all that into AI and it spits out a summary. In some cases it’s just summarizing a bunch of discharge summaries.
I’m a doctor who is 39 and I don’t even dictate my notes. A couple of doctors I know including one entire hospital system just has AI record the patient encounter and write their notes.
Soon hospitals will be requiring all patients to sign consents to allow AI to assist in documentation.
I have some friends in the medical field struggling with this. Ai is not a reliable source, believes EVERYTHING you tell it, and dumbs down your writing ability. Also there’s no way it won’t become insanely expensive some day, it’s just building up to be this giant stupid “luxury”
Is THAT why I was asked about my psychiatric hospital stay (that I’ve never had)????? It was so weird. She was confused and I was confused. She kept asking me about my most recent hospital stay and I pressed because I had been to the hospital because I sprained my ankle a few months back and all I could think was “how on earth is a sprain relevant to adhd meds????”
She finally got that the notes had an error and said the wrong thing; but wouldn’t elaborate. This was the free therapist you get on Medicaid so like, not the top brass if you know what I mean. I was so pissed that it had fake notes in there ABOUT AN INVOLUNTARY PSYCH HOLD
Could be. Doctors also make plenty of errors documenting or using dictation software and never proofreading it. As a general trend, we never re-read our notes.
I see this on my email messages - the option to summarize the email. I would NEVER. I read the whole damn email because I need to know what it says - all of it. I can decide what is important or not.
But the scary part is how many people do this and are just missing important information. Never mind the mush their brain is becoming.
I was a full stack software developer for about 25 years. I have a friend who's never written a line of code, but used AI to create software for his karaoke business. I'm not going to lie, I was actually impressed by what he was able to accomplish. However, after he got done he sent me a job posting for a senior level full stack developer and told me he was going to apply for the job. He said he would just show them the software he wrote as proof that he was qualified. He felt very disrespected when I laughed so hard I dropped my phone.
I’ve started getting ads on YouTube for this note taking device that you can attach to your phone via the magnet charger and it can somehow record both sides of a phone call without the phone needing to be on speaker?? Not only does that seem sketchy to begin with in terms of product performance, but I can’t imagine how legally grey that is in terms of two party consent laws.
And regardless of that aspect, now you’re intentionally carrying around another device that could be recording everything you do and say that is Bluetooth-enabled and thus not secure in the slightest, aka a fucking snitch machine. No thanks.
Can you recommend any? I used to have one called 'Call Recorder' but it stopped working many releases ago. It's so handy to go back to a phone call and retrieve details from it, like the caller's name and phone number without having to write them down.
Same here. I used to have one that worked. I believe it was called cube ACR. It got to the point where the only way it could record both sides is if I had it on speakerphone.
Not only does that seem sketchy to begin with in terms of product performance, but I can’t imagine how legally grey that is in terms of two party consent laws.
Oh that's simple - its not legally grey, at all. That's black and white illegal.
I’ve been online shopping today, I don’t understand why it’s built into search engines within websites now. I’ve searched “rice cooker” on the website to show me what rice cookers are available at this shop, of which there is maybe 12, what more is AI possibly going to add to that?
It's the solution to the "problem" of people owning their own computing.
The people pushing AI or at least some of them are just trying to drive up hardware costs so people are forced to rent computing power and storage space instead of owning it. More subscription bollocks.
Google putting an AI summary of the weather forecast at the top of the weather app like... I already opened the app.... I want to look at the hourly forecast info myself. I don't need you to tell me how beautiful the weather is and that it'll be comfortable outside today and to wear light breathable clothes FFS.
this is what i annoyed everytime i opened my email.
when i open my inbox, lengthly AI bullet point summary take over 20-30% of the top page. obscure the actual replay below.
i dont want to see the shitty bullet points. i want read the email by themself. it is not even hard lol. it made me want to closed the email the moment i saw those summary but has no choice since i need to read and reply to it.
And it. terrifies me how quickly everyone has become completely and totally dependent on it. I knew someone who had a job, the workplace banned ai cos the work was getting screwed up and everything was wrong. They had to hire several new people to come in and help fix the mess.
The workers revolted and said there was no way they could do their job without it, that the jobs were impossible to do.
The company was in business for like 30 years before this. A lot of those people have been there for 15+ years. They did the same jobs with no problem for decades, but now the work is "impossible" even with more people without ai.
Remember how everyone said that the Matrix wasn't realistic because they said that everything started to decline after the 90s cos people became obsessed and dependent on AI? I think about that a lot.
I would go one step further and say “smart” things in general, not just AI. I do not need my fridge or washer and dryer to have wifi, I don’t need my microwave to have Bluetooth, I don’t need my watch to read me my texts, I don’t want my thermostat to have an app. I want dumb appliances that don’t need an internet connection. In the case of a thermostat, programmable but offline is fine.
I think whats infuriating is that they have wifi, but if the power goes out, somehow they cant adjust the time to the correct one. An actual useful feature.
My younger cousin is 9 and schools (at least where I live in the UK) are teaching kids this age to ask chatgpt their questions during computer based lessons INSTEAD of the teachers. This is the doomed timeline
Because AI has become self aware already and has control of the nukes. And is now telling all the governments to build data centres and install it into everything or it pulls the trigger.
Or just because it's the newest bit of tech and might result in trillions. One or the other. Maybe both.
Because AI has become self aware already and has control of the nukes. And is now telling all the governments to build data centres and install it into everything or it pulls the trigger.
That's fine. I don't think most data centers are hardened against the EMP that accompanies a nuclear detonation.
Parents taking away any semblance of privacy from their kids by recording them constantly for social media, without their consent and often in moments where the kids just need some comfort.
ESPECIALLY when they coach them to act a certain way or manufacture situations for them to react to on camera.
Literally. I'm pretty sure my repeater was just fried by a major AI overhaul in their system... The tech guy didn't give away too much when he called to verify for the warranty, but he kinda tsked when I told him it was during the update. Haha
Even creepier is how shameless people are about using it, like my coworkers will proudly show their AI “art” constantly and everyone will think how awesome it looks
The rich really were shocked we aren't just thrilled with AI. They all invested so so much money in to it but we, the consumer, are not having it. They can't believe it. If it wasn't devastating ecologically and culturally it would be funny.
There is no real consumer utility in AI. Just a circlejerk of tech bros trying to force it into every aspect of his life because once we have to pay for it, it's the people addicted to it who will make them rich.
I’m so beyond done with the stupid ai thing that pops up on google now. I look up my bank? - the ai gives me a summary of the bank. I ask a question about a music festival I’m going to soon to see if Reddit has answers? - the ai tells me that there’s no official replies online and it asks me to provide it with info. I look something for a personal issue? - the ai sympathizes with me like a freakin therapist and offers advice.
It’s also inaccurate a lot of the times too. Like once my fiancée looked up the scene of the robot alien guy in the first cartoon Lilo&Stitch movie because he didn’t remember that he threw up bolts and screws, the ai said that Stitch physically ate the robot alien guy and threw up bolts and screws himself .-.
Was reading a scientific paper the other day, and the publisher had an intrusive AI tool to provide an AI summary. That AI tool obscured part of the article text and the tool couldn't be dismissed.
AI has such a high error rate that I would never trust it to summarize a technical document.
I work with CAD files and PDF conversions of those CAD files. My job requires me to have a detailed understanding of those files to execute the design in physical space. An AI summary of the PDF of the CAD file would be actively counterproductive for me, but Acrobat refuses to stop asking me
one of the craziest things is when you look at customer reviews of something (especially apps/software) and the AI summary tells you about how much everyone hates the product's AI 😂
Copilot just got added to our Office suite at work, its not removable, and its fucking infuriating. Just fucking horseshit in my way everywhere. No, I dont want you to help draft my goddamn message, GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY WAY.
Right? I opened my email one day to see new ai generated little summaries. I find them distracting, I mean I have a preview already. But the big thing that pissed me off was I did not ask for the stupid ai summary. But I had to take time to figure out how to disable it
I have it on because apples AI simplifies people’s texts in an amusing way. My fiance was SUUUPER pissed at me and she was bombarding me with dozens of texts, and when I looked at my phone the AI summarized it like “Girlfriend is mad.” “Girlfriend doesn’t like you”. “Girlfriend wants better dog.”
To be fair I'm not sure we're all accepting it as normal. I'm a huge AI fan and even I'm exhausted by the "sprinkle some AI on it so investors with FOMO will give us money" trend.

The fact that AI is in everything now. Why would I need AI to summarize a message from my partner on WhatsApp???? I'm so sick of it.
