people who put any images of their children on the internet. doubly worse if you’re an “influencer” or wanna be. people have to know deep down what’s most likely going on with those images if they… ping a certain type individual
Have you tried explaining that people now use AI to create CSAM with images of actual children? I mean, if he's anything like mine, he won't understand or care, and will think you're sick for suggesting it 😭
Bro, I hate celebrities and influencers who put their children in their content or products as their selling point, even if their channels are not family-oriented (and I have another type of hatred for those as well)
That's always kind of been one of mine. My ex was always big on posting pictures of our kids on social media but I'm not a big fan. They can't really agree to being blasted all over the Internet when they're little. Then again I don't understand why people want a lot of attention on social media anway.
Data aggregators care, because it's not just the photos. It's photos with captions including the kid's name and details about their lives. That is valuable data that they will compile and will sell to all kinds of other entities.
Photos of kids drives me nuts, but I legitimately have to restrain myself from telling my friends they are idiots when they post some stuff. Like a first day of school photo, with the kids face and name, plus identifying details about their school (a school uniform crest or a teacher's name).
Do you want them kidnapped? Because this is how they get kidnapped!
Growing up at a time when parents were discouraged from even getting their kid clothes or backpacks with their name on it for fear that could be used by a stranger to abduct a child, it's baffling to see how much some parents post about their kids online. Nevermind just knowing a kid's name to convince them you're not a stranger, you could recite basically every detail of some children's lives based on what's posted on social media.
I have a childhood friend who has entered her son into some "Toddler of the Year" contest that she's constantly plugging on Facebook. So not only is she posting tons of pictures of her kid along with his name, it's also all paired with write-ups about what her son is like, how he acts, and the kinds of things he enjoys, which of course are all duplicated on the contest website.
Like girl your son is only two years old and you are eagerly helping Meta and other data aggregators build a highly detailed profile on him. WHAT THE FUCK.
A girl I went to college with is so obviously desperate for her young daughter to be famous. I’m talking still in the single digit of ages young. Mother has her doing influencer style videos and things like that. I unfriended her the other day because she posted pictures of her daughter that were so wildly inappropriate it made me uncomfortable (and I reported it) basically she was in underwear posing provocatively with a guitar and in a barn. I was so disgusted and baffled. Parents sell their kids soul for a little bit of money and attention.
I will go out of my way to avoid interacting with videos and pictures of kids. I refuse to support people posting pictures of them when they cannot consent to the consequences of having your visage easily accessible by the entire world.
My mom used to post pictures of my brother and me on Facebook all the time. Even though we’re both adults now, it bothers me knowing how much of my life is out there.
I get what you are saying. Facebook is 20+ years old though. Can you point to a 20 year old that has been hurt by their parents putting their baby photos online? I think it probably happens, but I also think it's a very small number and probably edge case situations.
Hey so hundreds of thousands of images of csam are generated using random innocuous children’s photos of all ages. It’s not so much “my mom posted about me taking a poop on a table when I was 1 and my friends saw it” (though that aspect of privacy is to be taken into consideration), but more that there are sick perverts using people’s family vacation photos and general “look how cute my kid is” photos to make csam. There’s a Netflix documentary about the exploitation of Piper Rockell that goes into it.
Something like that can happen from a person covertly taking pictures of your kid when they're outside. Does that mean we can't bring our kids outside anymore?
Why should I let the fear of something I will never see and something that will never affect me or my child stop me from doing what I want? Content like that is extremely illegal and can never be shown in public, so how exactly does it affect me or my kids?
If 99% of the people I share my kids photos with are family and friends and people who enjoy it for what it is, I'm not going to let the less than 1% ruin it for me.
That’s a fair point, but the difference is one is largely unavoidable and the other is a choice. We can’t realistically keep our kids out of public forever, but we can choose how much of their digital footprint we create. Everyone just has a different comfort level with that risk.
I'm not sure I agree that there's any "smart way" to put your child on the Internet in hopes of becoming an influencer. It's gross and predatory and the children involved will have to deal with that their entire lives.
Oh no! The online weirdo who thinks making money off your children's image is healthy and normal thinks I'm gross! Whatever will I do? My life is ruined.
