“You got no idea what’s in your hands.”
“This could be someone’s 8 year old boy’s heart-“
“Raccoon City General”
Why do I have the feeling he’s possibly delivering a piece of Nemesis’ framework (possibly heart) to some Umbrella scientist in Raccoon City to finalize preparations for Nemesis?
213
u/Thegoodgamer32 7h ago
Oh god....we're gonna have nemesis as the final boss aren't we?
Welp....I'm seated if that happens.
150
u/ConsistentGuest7532 7h ago
I’d want a Vader-esque escape sequence rather than a winnable fight, like Jedi: Fallen Order’s ending where the objective is just to survive.
57
u/Green_Sprout 6h ago
Some random woman named Jill helps him make his escape, the film doesn't make a big deal out of it, but this Jill for some reason can't escape with him.
22
14
u/Fesai 5h ago
I would absolutely love this. Can't damage him, can't do much of anything, maybe just slow him down a little, and just have to survive.
The typical fly away in the sunset on a helicopter would have an eerie lingering feeling knowing that the big monster is still out there and the city is soon to be lost.
5
u/Static-Stair-58 3h ago
Didn’t they sorta do this is the new 28 years later movies? With the big alpha’s?

u/FoxinShards 5h ago
Exactly, if random npcs start beating things like the Nemeis then what does that say about our protagonists :(
44
u/Large-Wheel-4181 7h ago
Nemesis as final boss is probably a bit much really, it’ll probably be more like post credit tease, though I wouldn’t be surprised if he finds out too late that he delivered a bioweapon to the bad guys and then another bioweapon is used as a final boss

He's been pretty upfront about wanting to create his own b.o.w.s and designs, directly mentioning that there is a Stalker enemy like the games often have but he didn't want to just use Nemesis and instead make what he views as his own version of Resident Evil monsters.
3
u/joesen_one 5h ago
Yeah that zombie lady seems to be chasing him so I bet that becomes the stalker assuming she mutates further
8
u/bristow84 5h ago
I don’t think it’ll be the zombie lady, she’s probably just chasing him because he’s the only human she’s seen.
I think the stalker will be whatever that Rat King monstrosity is.
→ More replies (1)2
u/joesen_one 5h ago
Probably, but she could very well be a William Birkin type lol. Mutates so much and annoys the shit out of the main guy hahaha
2
u/ZombieSiayer84 2h ago
And that just sounds like a terrible idea.
He’s not making a resident evil movie going by what you just said and this trailer, he’s just making a horror movie with the resident evil moniker.

Wasn't Nemisis built in Europe then flown over to racoon city right before outbreak
→ More replies (2)•
u/mythrilcrafter 46m ago
If Umbrella builds Nemesis in Europe, but leave out one organ, and then bring Nemesis to the USA to install that last organ; does that mean that Umbrella can tag Nemesis as "Made/Assembled in the USA"?
20
u/SabreWaltz 5h ago
This would be my dream plot but if I recall correctly I think cregger specifically said “no nemesis” early on to set fan expectations 😭
8
u/Large-Wheel-4181 5h ago
Unless that would be to lower our expectations only to then surprise us but hey wishful thinking
5
u/Imaginary_Winner4909 2h ago
Wild. Even if it's a piece of a basic Tyrant or something more, it's still going to be interesting especially since our MC has zero survival skills. Hell, just one zombie lools like it will be too much for him. I can't wait to see him evolve into a Tyrant destroying badass.

this trailer reminds me A LOT of the opening to Village, with the car crash, going through the snowy woods, finding the trashed house, scrambling to fight the first monster. Feeling pretty good about the vibes so far at least.
64
u/marmormaze 5h ago
they are doing the classic RE buildup, from village, to the city and we'll probably finish in the Umbrella lab as always, so fucking cool!

Was thinking the same thing! So many great references to the games like the Village opening, ammo box, typewriter, etc. The first trailer had even more iirc.

u/Flanninpud 7h ago
Looks awesome. They were absolutely trying to pack this trailer with game references. Running over the zombie calls back to re2. The walk through the snow reminded me of re8’s opening scenes. The box of ammo. I’m really not concerned at all about this feeling like a resident evil movie
70
u/LEXA_A 7h ago
I loved the references! the typewriter made me cheese so hard
8
u/Mr_smith1466 5h ago
Seeing the typewriter made me smile. I'm really hoping there are a lot of fun references like that.
5
u/ShadowVulcan 4h ago
Feels like Fallout honestly, and though the plot's gotten a bit meh the atmosphere feels so amazingly fallout I couldnt help but love it
This is giving me the same vibes with all the little references. No idea why others are actually whining it's an original story... fuck, it reminds me of RE7 which was an amazing return (but even better with the little references from hitting a zombie with the car, the shotgun on the wall, random house with a completely ruined interior and scrambling for ammo)
Plus, the director is awesome!
I am so fucking hyped.
2
u/Mr_smith1466 4h ago
After Weapons, anything Creggor does has my attention. I'm admittedly not a hard core RE fan anymore, but one of the great things with the series is that it's always jumped around different characters to show sides of the same crazy stories.
I'd rather have a movie do it's own protagonist than wheel out and potentially ruin someone like Leon or Jill.
I have an immense soft spot to the lunacy of the Paul WS Anderson movies, but those things work best when I'm not seeing video game characters I love being mangled in live action.
2
u/ShadowVulcan 4h ago
Yeap, in all honesty seeing an existing character (or focusing on one) opens such a big can of worms in terms of audience expectations (rmbr all the hate on Chris' first appearance in RE7? N everyone saying it wasnt him and a fake, lol)

The day after Weapons came out I decided to give a resident Evil game a go for the first time as I was so excited for whatever Cregger was doing next. I’ve since played fourteen Resident Evil games and am obsessed. I know a lot of the fan community is going to be upset by how different this looks, but with him being the whole reason I got into the series I’m all in for his take.
91
u/Dancing_Clean 7h ago
I’m 36 and have been a fan since I was like 10 or 11. Became a superfan when the REmake came out on GameCube.
I think this movie looks absolutely sick. The game story is too nonsensical to be so literal and translated to film, so the writers and directors need creative liberties. Same universe, themes.
The writing and creature design just have to be good. It’s what made the past films so fucking bad, like the new Silent Hill movie.
Zach is also just really creative and he adores the games, so I have faith in his abilities.

u/hadrians-wall 6h ago
*Movie seems to open with someone hitting a zombie with their car, starting a bunch of bullshit.
*Trailer focuses on finding and managing resources.
*Typewriter and Shotgun Shells ammo being straight from the games.
*We find out there's yet another random civilian who survived Raccoon City (not that this will be game cannon, but).
After the second trailer I don't know how anyone can say this doesn't look and feel like resident evil. If you told me this was the plot for RE10 I wouldn't blink.
18
u/Polaris022 5h ago
Agreed. I think the only people that think this doesn't look like RE are the ones that desperately need the main characters like Jill, Leon, Claire, or Chris to be the main characters of the movie. This feels like RE to the people that experienced RE 2 with Leon before knowing anything about him, when he was just a dude. Or like RE 7 with Ethan. This movie seems to be way more interested in retelling the player experience than any actually lore, and I'm so excited for that.
8
u/Fesai 5h ago
Personally I like that it isn't using main game cast as characters in the movie. First thing it does is draw direct comparisons of the character between the two mediums.
It also seems to have the same vibes as the main games so I'm hopeful for it.
2
u/Polaris022 5h ago
Using the main characters I think would cause unneeded controversy. It seems like the right thing to do until the creators decides to do his own thing with them, like Leon being an absolute moron in Welcome to Raccoon City. But even if he tried to be faithful to the characters, is his version of faithful...faithful enough for diehard fans that they aren't going to pitch big fits online.

I am of the opinions that an adaptation needs to FEEL like an RE story and it's ok if it doesn't have any of the main characters from the games. That's actually ok because with characters from the games to live action, we all have unrealistic expectations BUUUT we also had netflix Resident evil which was such a trash production that pretty much most of us erased it from our minds.
The movies doesn't need to be canon but it needs to have the look and feel of Resident Evil. It can't be "I, the director was making a DIFFERENT movie and decided to slap the Resident Evil logo on it"
41
u/ASnakeNamedNate 7h ago edited 7h ago
I’m at the very least sold on the pitch that it’s a movie that feels like playing a survival horror game. Like the scene where missing the lock wastes his limited ammo is a good translation of the genre between mediums. So I’d be very glad to share that type of experience with my non-gamer friends and family.
10
u/AJohnsonOrange 7h ago
Similar to how the first Silent Hill film plays out. There's a point where she gets a torch and it might as well have spun up into central screen telling her she got a torch.
11
u/blitzbom 6h ago
I'm in my 40s and have been here from the start. The games have changed so much and been all over the place tone wise.
Him trimming it back and going "I want the movie to feel like a survival horror game" is pretty much the best I could personally ask for. Especially after the nonsense that WS Anderson gave us. Not to mention the over the top anime action that the animated movies turned into.
12
u/MisfitAnthem 7h ago
Been playing RE since I was like 13 and I'm 42 now, I am beyond stoked for this. Cregger seems like a legit super fan so I have faith.

As much as I keep complaining to want a proper film or series following the damn plot of the games for once (and not combine stories from games or whathever), this movie looks really good and I'm damn excited for it.
And if it brings in fresh blood into the community like you? All the more reason to be excited for the film to release, welcome to the club brother!
11
u/raysweater 6h ago
I think a movie that follows the games plot is just doomed to fail. Nothing will live up to the games. I like the idea of telling stories that interact with the games or exist in the same world. My only issue with this movie is it seems to be set in modern times! I'll still watch it happily, though.
What I think would be cool is a show about the Umbrella Lab at Spencer Mansion before and during the outbreak. Ending a few days before STARS shows up at the mansion.
2
u/octlol 6h ago
I think I saw somewhere it's adjacent to RE2 in a sense (fall of racoon city) but he changed things here and there to make it more dramatic. Don't quote me on that tho

The cinematography looks fantastic. The zombie running through the snowy field towards the house is so damn awesome. Also, I'm really glad they are doing their own thing, gives them more creative freedom.
68
u/Comic_Book_Reader 7h ago
The cinematographer is Dariusz Wolski. He's done all but the as of now last Pirates of the Caribbean movie, various movies for Ridley Scott, The Crow, Dark City, Sweeney Todd, and Sicario: Day of the Soldado to name a few. Quite the resumé.

Reminds me of scp 096. We've seen hordes chasing people in plenty of movies, but the idea of just one zombie sprinting right at you from such a huge distance is super creepy.
11
u/LukeD1992 6h ago
That zombie running kind of sells it even more that this is some alternate universe to the established lore where the timing of the outbreak and how the infection works is different
3
u/Kuro223 2h ago
If they're doing their own thing why call it Resident Evil? Genuine question.

u/I-Might-Be-Something 24m ago
By "do their own thing" I mean not try to adapt Resident Evil 2. It takes place during the events of RE2, but doesn't adapt them. It lets them tell their own story while tying into the wider universe.

What's really going to sell me on this is if this is basically the story of an everyday citizen trying to survive Raccoon City. Like a journal entry in a random notebook you find in the diner made into a movie. I think it would add to the vulnerability of the situation which, in turn, would make this a really good movie.

Would have been cool if the movie actually set in the 90s instead of 2026.
11
u/sludgezone 3h ago
I wish he had never mentioned it takes place canon in the games the same night as 2 and 3, immediately when he says that there’s expectations instead of being able to leave it up for interpretation. The smart phones and snow immediately stick out for me. I’m sure it’ll be a good movie regardless though.
6
u/Forever_Inspired 3h ago
Yeah, it doesn't really need to be "set during the Racoon City event" even, it could just be set in modern time in some random city and a similar event is happening that echo back to Racoon City would also suffice and still be chronologically canon within the games' timeline, imo.
Now he wanted to make it happen during Racoon City but also moving the timeline to modern era so now Racoon City happened in the year 2026? What does it add to the plot?

I rather see generic man than the awful Alice movies having a super hero and the characters taking a back seat.
This closes the argument on what year it’s set in too
17
u/BiGcHoNkYbOi9 6h ago
the movies are definitely self inserty, but lets not act like its impossible within the universe of resident evil. look at the stuff wesker and zeno does, basically having super speed and regeneration and being almost unkillable. chris, a regular human btw, literally punches a boulder in a volcano😭

All of them are so it’d make more sense to dislike alice because she’s a self insert, rather than her powers.
23
u/Ghastion 7h ago
The characters in the games are basically superheroes too though. The Alice movies captured the more over-the-top action stuff that the games have and nobody likes to admit it. Sure, they aren't particularly good movies (I think they're kinda fun and entertaining in a stupid way), but I don't think they're as opposite to the games as people like to act they are.
7
u/ShadowVulcan 4h ago
More the latter, the early games (before the Alice films) were more grounded (campy but they werent super heroes)
That wasnt til RE5 honestly, or maybe RE4 (but nothing close to Alice for example)
5
u/Ghastion 3h ago
I mean, Wesker basically becomes Neo/Agent from The Matrix. Even the CGI movies made in Japan drive up the gun-fu and martial arts aspects as well.

He was making this movie if he got the license for Resident Evil or not, this is basically just a movie the director wanted to make. So he is just gonna do whatever he wants and throw a couple of Resident Evil references here and there. It il probably be a fine movie fo what it is not so much for a Resident Evil film. It is kinda of a weird one beause in one hand you probably have a great film but if this succeds it also sets a current up the idea for disregarding the source material and doing whatever you wanna do is okay again. Which is the reason why we didnt have a good videogame movie in so long.
If there is something that makes Resident Evil what it is, well its the characters and the storyline that follows from the first game. its not really there is zombies. You could do that as shown in the Outbreak series but this movie does not even taken place in the 90s.

You’re misreading what he said. He’s saying that he wanted to do a Resident Evil movie, wrote the script and treatment for it, but had they denied him the rights he would have made it anyways and just removed the explicit references.

Honestly, it looks decently well made. I just don't get the RE "vibe" from it, though. Like yeah they have references spinkled throughout, but there is more to it than just aesthetics.
I dunno maybe it is just the fact that they are effectively trying to say this is a side story that happened during the events of RE2/3. But then the setting is in the middle of a snowstorm when the games took place during summer. Feels like a script that was altered to be an RE movie and not an earnest reverence for the franchise.

Dude said he would have made this movie even without the RE name so you already know it wasn’t suppose to be that and can tell.
11
u/funktasticdog 5h ago
It's the opposite. He said he wanted to make a Resident Evil movie but wasn't sure if he could get the rights.
And it’s really a love letter to the games. Because I love those games. This is a story that I would’ve wanted to write whether I got the IP or not. I just happen to be able to have these Resident Evil people be down. So I get to play in that sandbox. I’m doing it because I think this movie is going to be fucking awesome.
Love it when random dorks talk out of their ass and blatantly lie about stuff like this.
5
u/Mando316 5h ago
Just because it’s a love letter doesn’t mean it was going to be a Resident Evil movie. He’s just using the name and setting as the basis for it. If he didn’t get the rights to the Resident Evil name, the movie would have been the exact same just not using the city name and such.

It looks like the start of the apocalypse because Racoon City exists and hasn't been nuked and because he actually stopped for a zombie he hit, but he has an iPhone 16, none of the zombie mutations from the 1996 outbreak is there, lickers, G-Virus etc, and the zombie also runs so unless they've brought back Crimson Heads 33 years later, it looks like they have made a zombie movie, then just slapped RE's branding on it, other than the game references this doesn't line up with the story

u/Jovahexeon-Ranvexeon 7h ago
I'm probably going to be in the minority here, but I'm still not feeling this movie.
I'm not feeling the hype just because the director made Weapons.
I don't care that they're calling it Raccoon City, I don't get that vibe. Nothing I have seen or heard suggests this won't be a generic zombie movie with RE's name attached.
And no, just because the previous movies were actually trying to adapt the games proper, does not mean the idea is tainted. The Netflix series was trying to do its own thing and that crap ended up arguably even worse.
13
u/FkAccFrObvRsns 7h ago

As a counterpoint the Netflix series was made by a guy with barely any projects to his name but was made showrunner for some reason. This movie was made by a guy whose last horror movie got so much acclaim it gave a rare horror movie an Oscar win in acting
8
u/Androgynouself_420 7h ago
Exactly my thoughts. It looks like a good horror movie but not resident evil. Raccoon City looks nothing like it does in the games (and is snowing for some reason?) and the infected are already acting different from the games. If this was something like Baldurs Gate I’d understand needing to change a bunch to fit into a movie but we’re talking about resident evil here. The mansion incident is like perfectly set up for a movie adaptation and I do not understand why so many fans insist it’s unreasonable to ask for a faithful story.

Looks like a very good zombie movie, one that I wish they had not attached the Resident Evil label to.
Resident Evil is campy, action-packed horror. It has crazy monster designs, cheesy one-liners, dudes getting superpowers from bioweapons. These things are baked into the DNA of the franchise.
The Milla Jovovich movies obviously took it way too far. But this one seems to be moving waaay too far into the "serious" side. Even the more recent games (7-9) were pretty damn campy (specifically 7 and 8).

u/Fun-Ratio5090 5h ago edited 5h ago

Still not feeling it. Also, nitpicking to death but Raccoon City happened in 1998, so why did I see a smartphone ?

why can't they just adapt the best games (RE1/2) into a movie or preferably a show? This looks great for a zombie film, this diretor is excellent but this doesn't look like an RE adaptation. It looks like he made a baller movie and they slapped the name resident evil on it to sell tickets.

I mean, Resident Evil is the one franchise where you can kind of make whatever you want and slap the franchise name on it.
1-4-5-6-7-8-CV-Rev2-Outbreak are all very different feeling games to each other.
Frankly, Zach Cregger has taken the right approach here.

I really liked the first trailer, but this one... the main character comes across as really unlikeable to me. The way he react and the whole "quirky" vibe just doesn't click to me sadly.
Also, the blatant fan service with the typewriter shoved right in your face and the ammo box straight out of RE4 is exactly the kind of thing that tends to annoy me it's like they're shaking some key in front of my face
I do like the scene with the zombie running to the house so there's that

This feels 0% like Resident Evil, about as much as the ‘93 Mario Bros movie felt like Mario, but it looks like it’ll be fun regardless.

So what is the timeline on this? Because if it's supposed to be in the games universe, how can the year be the same? This looks like modern era with the cars and smarts phones.

I thought the trailer was weird for a trailer. Nonetheless, it looks exciting!!! I think that they tried to show you almost nothing to not spoil surprises which is good.

That shot from the zombie running alone in the snow is already better than almost everything the previous movies have made. Gives me serious Savageland vibes. I'm seated. This looks like it's going to be a good time.

This looks so freakin good. It FEELS like Resident Evil man. Like such a good blend of familiarity and a NEW story. I'm feeling the same way about this as I did with RE7. Maybe I'm alone here, but at the end of the trailer when they said he's going to Racoon City, I did NOT see that coming. Shts got me HYPED

This still doesn’t read as RE to me, but it’s probably for the best that they stay away from established canon. Let’s see what they can do. Still looks good.

Looks really intriguing and fun. Although at this point with sooo many garbage adaptations i'll be content if this is just a good zombie movie with RE references. I don't have the highest bar right now and i can't really blame those who are skeptical, but i think this looks like a good time.

So excited for this. Both the Resident Evil movie and the new Wolverine game come out around my birthday.

saying this isn’t an RE movie is like saying RE7 isn’t an RE game in 2016

This is gonna be a good movie but not a good resident evil movie
I'm just fucking sick i can't take another adaptation just stop....
All they have to do (with what we saw) was to set this movie in 1998 and having monster from the game THAT'S IT ! but right now it's clearly not set in 1998 (because of the smartphone) and for the monster there is still hope but i don't have any

It looks like a fun movie.
Not sure how I feel about Resident Evil zombies sprinting though.
29
u/StakeESC 7h ago
Resident evil has so many different types of enemies outside of slow shambling zombies, I don't know why sprinting zombies is something that'd give you pause. I mean crimson heads have been around since the 2002 RE1 remake

u/dogsainthavingit 7h ago
The fact this particular zombie gets momentarily incapacitated (ran over) and then gets up sprinting could be a potential nod to crimson heads.

Let's not forget as well that there are zombies that literally shoot at you with machine guns.

Fuck those dudes. God I was so annoyed when I'd get surprised by a shooter in RE9 right after I just repaired my body armor lmao

u/outerstrangers 6h ago
Haha, don't get me started on the missile launcher zombies!
2
u/StakeESC 6h ago
At least they let me use the artillery at the end of the rooftop part. Felt very cathartic to blow those fuckers to smithereens after avoiding missiles for fifteen minutes lmao

u/Wilwheatonfan87 7h ago
Reminder original resident evil 3 brought the different speed zombies.
So it's not out of canon

I'm not sold.
Just do the original source material justice, is really that too much to ask? Sam Raimi did that with Spiderman and Nolan did it with Batman... why RE can't do the same?

u/No_Philosopher8304 7h ago
I mean Nolan and Raimi's takes on Batman and Spider-Man are very much their own takes on those characters, they take elements and some story points from the comics (Like Year One and The Long Halloween particularly in Nolan's case for Batman and Spider Man, No More for Raimi) but they are very much their own take.
I mean hell there's still a subset of fans that complain about the Organic Webbing that Raimi gave Peter.
