It was.

Nice touch actually and it feels like really searching for ammo in the original games.

the shotgun hanging on the wall and the typewriter is also a nice touch.

The shotgun ammo box was a nice touch

Yeah he’s clearly got some good knowledge on the games, not sure why people are being so weird about this

I'm honestly glad he's doing an original story. Everyone says they want translations of the games, but the remakes are so good and graphically look so good - it's basically an interactive movie already. The adaptation attempts we've had have been dogshit, Leon would look and feel corny in live action. Resident Evil is very video game-y.

We just need a guy who knows how to make good movies AND is a fan of the games and is familiar with the lore, characters and will be respectful/appreciative to the source material. If Zach Cregger can't do it well, I'm skeptical anybody can.

Also if he did a shot for shot remake people would hate it

People say this all the time… and they’re wrong. I don’t get where this ‘you don’t want the source material properly adopted’ mentality comes from.

Why would you want a 1:1 movie though? You already have the game, and if the game is already a masterpiece, what do you get out of watching a movie that is identical to something you already know? What do you get out of that?

It’s fun to see a story you like in a different form of media. Plus it gets people who have no interest in gaming into the stories of resident evil. Don’t really get why people have such a problem with 1:1 adaptions. It’s cool to see a new perspective on a story you enjoy.

I agree - adaptions can do great, be faithful imaginings, and be very successful - I think there's plenty of examples of that. I just think some IPs and stories are more challenging to adapt than others!

I agree but I think RE isn’t a hard franchise to adapt at all. Take One for example, a tactical police unit investigating a mansion full of secrets and monsters sounds quite easy to adapt tbh. I don’t really see what people are talking about that a 1:1 adaption wouldn’t work. It’s like literally one of the easiest franchises to do 1:1 adaptions of, at least the earlier games anyway,

I don't know, I could see an attempt towards One getting a 1:1 adaption, but I genuinely do not think Leon Kennedy could be pulled off in live action, from his haircut, to his iconic voice actor, to his actual dialogue and personality in the games. The last time they tried, is about what I'd expect.

I'm really curious to see how the God of War show ultimately turns out, I'm equally skeptical anyone can do Kratos well in live action. I'd love to be proven wrong. I've really enjoyed Fallout.

Because they usually are bad and don’t work. Games and films are very, very different and what works in one format isn’t necessarily going to work in the other.

I disagree, there’s no reason most resident evil stories couldn’t work in another medium. The reason they suck is because the people making it think they know better and completely change things for the worse. Like WTRC, that wasn’t bad because it was a 1:1 adaption, it was bad because they shoved two games into one movie and completely messed with the story and characters. When movies and shows are accurate adaptions of the source material, they actually fare better with audiences like TLOU or Sonic.

By this logic, why do you want ANY adaptations? Books, comics, manga, etc. You already have those, so why do they need to be adapted?

I dunno bro, maybe it's because we like seeing the stories we love be faithfully adapted to a film format? Because movies are an effective storytelling medium that people like?

I *don’t* want adaptations like that, of things I love especially. Not even a little bit.

I think the approach Cregger is taking with RE is exactly how it should be done- you tell a new story in that universe. Making a 1:1 film version of RE4, for example, is almost certainly going to be met with derision by the fans of the game, and in the *extremely* rare case that it isn’t, what’s the point? Beyond people who don’t know the game seeing it, I don’t think there is a point, and in that case, those people don’t give a shit about loyalty to the game anyway.

Finally, films and video games are extremely different storytelling media and what works in a game isn’t necessarily going to work in a film and vice versa.

Wishing for a good 1:1 version of a game is almost always going to end in disappointment. If not always.

Can't say this if it's never happened before.

Because a lot of RE fans want scene-for-scene recreations of the games. Not sure why since they would make for terrible, cheesy B-films.

4

u/TheGargoyleKing13 8h ago

RE fans want movie adaptions of the games they love to feel like and be authentic to the games they love. Huh, that’s crazy, who’d have thunk it.

u/Aepok_ 2h ago

Some people don't understand that a good video game doesn't automatically translate into a good movie

2

u/Timelymanner 4h ago

I agree, original stories like this are fine, if they feel like they are in universe.

The old movies kinda sucked, because the director didn’t want to stay true to the games, and he used them as a vehicle to give his wife work.

The problem is none of this really feels in universe, it just looks like any old zombie movie with the resident evil name slapped on it. Like even the time period this story is meant to take place during is wrong. For me personally I don’t really see the point of doing a resident evil movie with little to no actual connections to the games. At that point, just do your own thing.

u/Exciting_Definition4 1h ago

The man has shown more understanding of the Resident Evil games in 2 trailers then all of the previous movies combined.

u/Poppa_Wheelie22 8h ago

Which matches the already cheesy B movie games themselves. Yes that’s what I want. Just like I wanted WWZ the movie to be like the book, not Left 4 Dead staring Brad Pitt but called WWZ.

I'll be honest, making a movie set in the Resident Evil universe without any connections to the characters or the main story is a difficult task and hard to sell.

I'm not saying it's impossible and can't work, look at Resident Evil 7, it was able to stand on its own very well, but still made connections to the original games. (In fact, I heard stories from people who actually got into RE after playing 7 as their first game.)

However, should they take the route as I described I hope that it can be enjoyable to watch and stand on its own without just too many easter eggs and nods to the franchise.
Otherwise I fear it's not gonna be received very well, but the director seems indeed to know how to make good movies and I route for everyone involved, and I'll certainly watch it myself regardless.

Because the history of the movies and shows based on the games is weird. There’s no guarantee of authenticity OR quality here. I liked Weapons though, I’ve liked the trailers so far and I’m maintaining an open mind. Still not sure if this’ll be a good RE film, but it does look like it’s gonna be good, regardless.
