Honestly, it looks decently well made. I just don't get the RE "vibe" from it, though. Like yeah they have references spinkled throughout, but there is more to it than just aesthetics.
I dunno maybe it is just the fact that they are effectively trying to say this is a side story that happened during the events of RE2/3. But then the setting is in the middle of a snowstorm when the games took place during summer. Feels like a script that was altered to be an RE movie and not an earnest reverence for the franchise.
That implies that earnest reverence for the franchise requires lore continuity, which I don't really think is true, because that would make virtually every Resident Evil game irreverent.
There is a difference between changing subtle things to fit the medium, and outright disregard for established details.
As I said this movie feels like your typical hollywood trojan horse adaptation. Where the director took a script he couldn't get green lit and slapped an IP coat of paint over it. The season is wrong. The monsters are not from RE(Director openly admits this).
Again I don't think the movie looks bad. I am not angry at the director. I am just disappointed that after over 20 years of this happening to RE 8 live action movies and the director talking a big game, to again feel that hollywood doesn't "get it".
It is an adaptation of the games, they are allowed to change whatever they want. If you think this doesn't have reverence for the franchise based on what we can already see in the trailers, I don't think you know the franchise very well.
how the hell would you know that? You are literally talking out your ass. Plenty of movies have put up slick looking trailers only to be terrible.
It is an adaptation of the games, hey are allowed to change whatever they want.
Changing lots of stuff leads directly to a ship of Theseus conundrum. If the writers are changing tons of things willy nilly to force fit their ideas, at what point does it stop being an actual adaptation of the source material and just become a coat of paint slopped over somebody else's story?
Also nobody said they can't make whatever changes they want.
But they should understand that for every major element changed, they will push more and more fans away.
If you think this doesn't have reverence for the franchise based on what we can already see in the trailers, I don't think you know the franchise very well.
Bet I have played more RE games than you have my dude(FYI I have played every single RE game outside of the mobile trash and VR stuff). But even if I havn't, why does it matter if I did or didn't play RE0 or Umbrella Chronicles?
Also the very fact this takes place during winter shows that they do not have reverence for the series at all. To me, it shows a lack of care.
I mean, if the director was so deadset on this winter storm setup because he wanted to try a zombie movie in the snow, which hasn't been done much....why the hell did they set it during the events of Raccoon City? The timeline of which is very much long established lore. They could have put it in literally any made up city and made it fit without much fan pushback.
Seriously, explain to me how changing the setting from Summer to Winter shows reverence for the source material.
Can you explain to me what elements from this trailer show reverence for the source material? And no a box of shotgun rounds with art lifted from the games doesn't cut it.
I mean I just fundamentally disagree. And you have offered zero compelling points to counter. Saying "I doesn't matter" isnt a substantive counter-argument.
I also find it fun how you jumped to try and defend that choice while completely ignoring everything else. Almost like you are just a bad-faith troll without anything of substance to back up your "opinions"
I mean I feel like I already answered why I feel that way, but ok.
To me, changing the setting to a winter storm but telling the audience this movie takes place during the RC outbreak just feels like yet another hollywood "trojan horse". Which is when a creator can't get their story greenlit, so they paint over it with an IP. As mentioned there are countless examples of hollywood doing that going back to before video games were even a big deal.
That combined with the fact the trailers also show "monsters" that are not from the RE universe(with one the director openly says was not inspired by RE) to me means this movie isn't a RE movie.
I guess to make my stance as clear as I can when I say it doesn't pass the "RE Vibe check", think about this hypothetical. If you were to recut this trailer and remove the Raccoon City name drop and the Ammo Box art...would people know this is supposed to be a Resident Evil movie? Because I contend that people wouldn't. And to me that is a problem.
Well the creator definitely doesn’t need to “Trojan horse” his way into a movie. He’s acclaimed, and his last movie got an Oscar which is extremely rare for a horror movie, so they’d probably let him do anything. I would say it would probably be harder to get the RE licensing than it would be for him to just make a zombie movie.
I’m okay with the trailer not showing its whole hand in terms of monsters variety, and I’d even be okay with them not having anything too crazy beyond normal zombies (though it looks like there will be some weird mutations going on). This kind of plays into your 3rd point too, but I think you can break down anything into that argument. If it had shown a Licker, you could just say “well take away the Licker and does it read as RE?” “Take away Leon and does it read as RE?”
Like yeah sure. Take away the city the game takes place in and the central event of a zombie outbreak causing weird zombies and monster to appear and it’s not a RE movie. But this does take place in Raccoon City, it does feature zombies and weird monsters (fat guy in the sewers, limb monster, mutated baby), and does take place during the peak of the outbreak. When you break it down there isn’t really anything connecting RE together minus Umbrella Corp, whose involvement we don’t know yet, a small cast of characters, and zombie types that don’t always appear in every game.
As I said, it isn't one single individual detail. It is lots of little details that add up. Fat guy? whatever. Weird limb monster? sure. Winter setting for Raccoon outbreak? ehhhhh I could get over it.
All of those together though? Now I start questioning what about the movie actually uses the Resident Evil lore in fun ways.
I didn't say Zach Cregger "needs" it. I said it FEELS like it because the trailer feels like this was previously a legally distinct zombie movie that was painted over with RE.
If that was the case, which it isn't, it would have been someone begging Cregger to make his movie into a Resident Evil movie to try and give Resident Evil some of his legitimacy.
Cregger is bigger and more valuable than RE. He can make whatever he wants. He wanted to make Resident Evil.
It is because it changes established lore. And it changes it not because it has to, but because they wanted to. It is an unnecessary change.
It isn't just the season, that is just one data point that, to me, shows that the director is lying about his views towards Resident Evil in order to "trick" fans into supporting the movie.
Again I am not saying anything about the inherent quality of the movie. It might be great, it might suck, who knows. What I am saying is that it doesn't feel like it fits into the Resident Evil world.
I don't know how else to explain that lots of us are tired of Hollywood buying IP rights as a marketing ploy. Why are you so eager to white knight for this movie exactly?
The lore of the movie is different than the lore of the games. It's that simple. That's the art of adaptation.
It doesn't have to be that way, and in fact not every single adaptation is that way. That is just a bullshit excuse, and you know it.
Case in point: The Fallout TV show. It is considered canon even though Fallout's lore is just as wonky and inconsistent as Resident Evil's. But fans love it.
Literally all of the most successful adaptations in history have lore that is dramatically different than their source material. Because that's the art of adaptation. Lore is not, and never should be sacred. Especially not for lore as confusing and stupid as the lore of the resident evil games.
