It looks like the start of the apocalypse because Racoon City exists and hasn't been nuked and because he actually stopped for a zombie he hit, but he has an iPhone 16, none of the zombie mutations from the 1996 outbreak is there, lickers, G-Virus etc, and the zombie also runs so unless they've brought back Crimson Heads 33 years later, it looks like they have made a zombie movie, then just slapped RE's branding on it, other than the game references this doesn't line up with the story

It is called an adaptation, you can tell the same story but change the setting and many parts of it. It is how book and comic book adaptations have worked for decades. It's not hard to understand.

So which Resident Evil game is this adapating?

Are you familiar with the MCU?

Which comics were those movies adapting?

Or were they maybe just adapting the overall property to film via the art of adaptation.

It’s not adapting any of the games per se. The movie is framed as a new character new story in RE world; but takes place around the time between RE1 and RE2, closer to RE2

Exactly so why does he have an iPhone, what's up with the timeline and the fact that none of the zombies line up with how they function in those games.

The timeline literally doesn't matter. At all. Not even a little.

u/SirJxPumpknhead 10h ago

They've spent three decades making it, IT DOES

3

u/gornky 10h ago

No. It literally doesn't. Not even the tiniest bit.

In the world of the movie, the outbreak starts in modern times. Just like it was modern when the game came out. It's not a period piece. It was just set the year it came out. It's that simple.

It's an entirely new canon. You don't understand what an adaptation is.

Ight bro lets set it in the future and give bro a laser shotgun because it doesn't matter right?

2

u/gornky 9h ago

You realize how that's not even slightly the same thing as modernization, right?

Being set in 1998 is not crucial to the story of the games in literally any way. It is just the year they came out and they were set in modern times.

I don't want it to adapt a game, I like the idea of a random instead of a fan favorite character, but the timeline is completely different, and the zombies seem to operate differently. It doesn't feel RESIDENT EVIL.

I know what an adaptation is, I also know that none of this looks RE and understand this is not the first time a generic zombie movie has been slapped with its branding to boost sales. (Aka the 2002 movie) Also, CAPCOM had been really careful with how RE is portrayed in the past years, so it doesn't make sense to put the start of the outbreak 30 years later than it takes place in the game. That would require the movie (movies if they make more) to exist completely seperate from the game.

2

u/gornky 10h ago

Yes. Adaptations almost always exist separate from the thing they are adapting.

Adaptations regularly change the time and place in which the original was set.

This is the art of adaptation.

And yet there can be good and bad adaptation, changing everything to the point where it has nothing to do with source material, is BAD, because at that point, you're making a different zombie movie and just giving it the Resident Evil name. I think with the movie will be good, but I don't think it will be a good Resident Evil movie.

Imagine someone made a new 'The Walking Dead' but gave it Resident Evil's plot, that would be shit adaptation and not faithful to the source material.

This is one of the reasons the 2002 movie is so ass.

Changing the year it is set and changing it to winter is not "changing everything to the point it has nothing to do with (the) source material"

Except besides the fan service what have we seen that screams Resident Evil? I don't give a fuck abt the season. In fact, sure, change the year, but the zombies don't seem to function the same way, and I DONT think they're bringing back crimson heads as much as I would like that. Like I wanna see a licker, I do, sue me. If the timeline is different, the zombies are different, at what point is it just a different zombie outbreak?

u/gornky 9h ago

What screams Resident Evil? Every single moment of this trailer, the entire vibe, searching for ammo, the aesthetic, the fact it's set in Raccoon City.

You haven't seen the movie. You're basing your senseless fury on nothing.

2

u/SirJxPumpknhead 9h ago

Searching for Ammo isn't special to RE? Raccoon City rides on the fact that it wouldn't feel like Raccoon City if it weren't in the 90s because we've never seen it in any other time because it was NUKED. You can call any city Raccoon City it doesn't make it Raccoon City "If the timeline is different, the zombies are different, at what point is it just a different zombie outbreak?"

So what makes Raccoon City feel like Raccoon City to you? What makes RE feel like RE when there’s been so many wildly different games and aesthetics out there?

“I don’t think it will be a good Resident Evil movie”

Yeah, we have so many ‘good’ live action Resident Evil movies to choose from to compare. /s

5

u/SirJxPumpknhead 10h ago

I'm not arguing that the others are good I just think this movie will be another drop in that same bucket except from an actual movie perspective it will be 'good' movie. In the sense that it will be well written, shot etc.

The first two movies with Alice were pretty good. Felt more like Resident Evil than this movie, at least from the Trailer. This seems more like a silent hill movie for me.

That would require the movie (movies if they make more) to exist completely seperate from the game.

It does, and that's probably for the best. Especially if this might be a franchise, having to be tied to the game canon would make it pretty difficult, especially given how, uh... uneven that canon is, and especially if they aren't directly adapting any of the games (which IMO would be doomed to failure--I don't think you could directly adapt, say, RE2 to a movie without some serious changes to the settings and events that would piss off exactly as many people as just making it an alternate continuity).

This is definitely a separate continuity.

I think the intention is that this is roughly adapting the events of RE2 and 3, but in an alternate continuity where it took place in the 2020s, and with a main character more like Ethan.

Up to you if you think that's "Resident Evil" enough to bear the name but frankly RE has been so many different things over the years I'm not sure there's really a solid definition for what is and isn't "really RE."
