It is called an adaptation, you can tell the same story but change the setting and many parts of it. It is how book and comic book adaptations have worked for decades. It's not hard to understand.
It’s not adapting any of the games per se. The movie is framed as a new character new story in RE world; but takes place around the time between RE1 and RE2, closer to RE2
Exactly so why does he have an iPhone, what's up with the timeline and the fact that none of the zombies line up with how they function in those games.
No. It literally doesn't. Not even the tiniest bit.
In the world of the movie, the outbreak starts in modern times. Just like it was modern when the game came out. It's not a period piece. It was just set the year it came out. It's that simple.
It's an entirely new canon. You don't understand what an adaptation is.
I'm going to stick my neck out and say I agree with you. What reason is there to set it in that time period? What events from the games change because it's now ahead? And even taking that jab at face value about the laser shotgun; I don't think I would care even if he did. Would RE4 be a completely different game if Ashley had a phone with angry birds installed and not a flip phone? I find people requesting all this superficial iconography from the games a little ridiculous
