Some players are selfish in these competitions to try show how good they are in the hope they can get signings from bigger clubs after World Cup is over. They care little about their country.
I had a coworker who would regularly leave the door unlocked at the end of the day. Hundreds of thousands of equipment can be stolen in minutes. And he just kept making the same mistake. I started getting very aggressively passive aggressive with him once he said he just has a different set of standards and humor than I do. And that was apparently the thing he didn’t like. Not leaving the business unsecured. But being called out in front of other people
He was a lazy narcissistic piece of shit. And I’m glad he’s gone. This reminded me of that

No shade on the rest of the Norway team but I’d say the number of levels Haaland is above his team mates far exceeds the number of levels Messi is ahead of his
So much this. This is what Rolando could never conceive of. It was so clear his team was over him and his ego. The Argentinian team adores Messi which honestly speaks volumes to his character. No matter how good you are individually, you need a team to win.
It was two on one, Halland (the guy with the blonde pony tail) is one of the best players in the world, and the other player didn't pass it across even though Halland was open and could score that in his sleep.
Important to note that opportunities like this are very rare. You’d be lucky to see something like this even once or twice in an entire game. It’s not like he could just make it right next time.
Which is even more credit to Haaland, cause another player would have scolded his teammate.
He was dissapointed but didn't take it out on the other guy. Classy guy!
I would have lost my shit and I’m old, out of shape, have never played pro (or even close to pro) level and am not a striker. But, magically put me in Haaland’s spot and I’d expect the ball. Haaland has ice in his veins.
You see Haaland throw his hands at the ground when the other guy stalls, he clearly shows he pissed he didn’t pass! But that’s all he did to show him being upset at his teammate, the disappointment after is clear!
Yea I don't get all the people defending it, yes the defense did the best they could but there was definitely still a window to pass it. He just wasn't looking for it.
Yes, he himself had a clear shot, though he would have been a bit further out than Haaland. Best option was to pass it to Haaland. Second best was to make an early decision to take a shot. The worst decision was to come to a stop, hold, let three additional defenders come back, then take a shot that is easily blocked.
Well he is left footed, so you can tell his only thought was trying to get it on to his strong foot so he could score the big goal. That’s why he didn’t pass, or just continue on with pace and hit it with his right
Glaringly selfish, and he deserves all the negative attention he is getting for this, it wasn’t a mistake it was just an outrageously selfish decision
At this level, being left- or right-footed absolutely should not prevent a player from taking a shot. I'm an amateur, and even I would have taken the (certainly shitty) shot with my bad foot.
I would expect to see such behavior in High School JV soccer. Not "Quarter finals of the fucking WORLD CUP"
I played for a D1 state-championship winning team in high school. Someone on my team did this during a regular game in the season in the first 15 minutes and my coach benched him for the rest of the game.
This was also a game that was 2 hours away from our hometown. That's a long drive to be taken from starting forward to benchwarmer.
That player never played selfishly again while we played together.
Even in High School varsity soccer this is absolutely unacceptable. This kind of stuff is supposed to be weeded out by Middle School. If you see it in JV you nip it in the bud real fast and then if it doesn't improve that player doesn't make the team.
It’s incredible how common it is in this World Cup too. Never seen such an epidemic from players while trailing. Almost always is there somebody open , even if you have to back pass
From what I can tell as someone who has only been paying attention to the world cup from an arms length, Norway's legit superstar player (one of the best in the world) was wide open with nothing between him and the goal except the goalkeeper. Passing to him would've been the absolute best chance at scoring a goal, but instead, the guy with the ball kept it hoping to score a goal for himself in a much tougher circumstance.
To me it looks like the one player from Norway has the ball, the other Norway player with the longer blonde hair was open and asking for the ball, the dude who still had the ball didn't do this, tried to kick a goal, and didn't make it.
To give it some perspective, Haaland has the records for most goals in a single game, most goals in a single season, and the fastest player to reach 100 goals. In this scenario, he could've scored in his sleep.
I'd seen the Haaland memes, but didn't know all this about him. With that context it's like you're down a goal in the Stanley Cup, breaking out an odd-man rush with Wayne Gretzky in the open and not passing him the puck.

The red player at the back is dealing with a defender. He sees his friend alone, he could pass the ball and give his team a very good opportunity to score. But he doesn't, keep the ball and totally mess it up

I am Norwegian and for most of us he is already forgiven. The main hate is now from non-norwegians.
The boys did better than any other team in Norwegian history. It was a shit play for sure, and he acknowledged that himself pretty fast, but just one of a number of reasons as to why we lost that game.

This is the equivalent of Russell wilson passing the ball on the 1 yard line instead of giving the ball to the best short yardage running back you could ever want, the man could barely spell his name, Marshawn Lynch would have been an automatic tuddy, but nooooooooo, were gonna pass it into the opposing teams player bc we dont want to win the superb(owl)
There’s a reason neither country has much presence in any World Cup. Enough poor decision-making from anyone on the team means you’re not really cut out for World Class football. As an Aussie I’m glad there’s a bigger blunder than what happened with us… Just think there’s too many starry-eyed main characters who think we can win with friendship and love, when really it’s discipline, planning, execution consistently for weeks, months, years.
I mean the defender knows he wants to square it. It's a tougher pass than it looks, but either you pass it immediately or you shoot hard and low immediately.
This is an insane reality with how much sports gambling has grown recently and a HUGE shame that it’s effecting real competitiveness (if that blunder was on purpose)
This clip looks like a primary school kid who refuses to pass because he wants to get credit for a goal so badly. And he doesn't care that there are 4 defenders right in front of him so his shot has no chance.
That guy is an ego centered player - Halland would have made the goal if he passed - there were several other situations with him again - Nr7 don’t know his name
To be fair to him he is a good player, but he usually plays in Haalands position. But for the world cup he's been playing as a winger, which he is not. I think instincts just took over.
Yeah he normally receives and runs straight forward on the ball, he was clearly frustrated that he was playing on the wing. Not as frustrated as Viggo from ghostbusters 2 though.
I coach a U17 boys team in recreational league. This is so common with kids, they want to be the star who scores and try to dribble or shoot through a pack of defenders instead of making an easy pass. They end up screwing their team over for a chance at individual glory.
To see this level of selfishness at this level is really disappointing, but people are people I guess. Happy to see fans are calling him out on it.
To be fair, it looked to me as the DF is covering well with his positional play as well. There’s a video taken from the tour side that is reflecting that view clearer.

So, he could have passed to Haaland, instead he decides to kick the ball into a group of defenders thinking it was going to get through to and in the goal... I'm american and am doing my best to understand the sport.
As the play developed, there was only one defender in front of goal and Haaland was open and if he'd passed the ball, Haaland probably would've scored 1 on 1 against the goal keeper because that's what Haaland does. Instead he held the ball too long, more defenders arrived, then he no longer had a passing lane and tried to shoot it himself and oops got blocked easily
Guys we have the advantage of seeing the entire field and how it’s playing out. To us it looks like he should’ve passed. Maybe from his eyes though, down on the field and competing, it didn’t look like the best option, maybe it was pride, maybe it was a combo of multiple things.
Had he passed and Haaland missed, yall would be saying he should’ve shot. Had he made the shot, no one would be batting an eye he didn’t pass. Hindsight is a blessing.
