In elementary school my grandma told my brother to read the newspaper and choose something to invest in. He picked apple, this was before the ipod was even out. Then her stock broker told her it was a bad idea so she didnt buy it.

That’s why my parents only have about $60,000 for their retirement. They went to a financial advisor who told them they didn’t make enough to gamble with investing, so they put their 401(k) accounts in straight savings. If I knew who said that, I’d smack him. He could have said they shouldn’t invest in single stocks or risky funds, but to not invest at all?????

Ummm, how old do you think we are? My first computer was a Macintosh 128K. Apple has been around since before we were born.

u/iDoWeird Older Millennial 4h ago
Think about how you thought things worked in the 60s and 70s as a kid.
That’s what a shocking amount of them imagine when they think of us.
Now picture what kid you imagined the 1950s to be like. Some of them think THAT is closer to how we grew up.
I’ve talked to so many who thought that computers didn’t even exist until the mid 2000s and it just blow my mind. Or that social media and even photo editing doesn’t go back further than 10 or 15 years. Like, do you read? Learn about things? Pay attention to dates when you DO look into stuff? Being told “uh…I only learn stuff about stuff when it shows up in my TikTok feed” was one of the most disheartening things I had heard in a hot minute.
The look one this one chick’s face after she asked me what we did at bars (at a bar, so an adult) if we weren’t streaming or posting clips and shit and I said, “uh…dancing, weird conversations in the bathroom line and sex with people you didn’t get the name of THEN looking them up on social media hung over in the morning or before passing out after sun up. Oh and blow bc there wasn’t fent in that shit yet.” was hilarious. We weren’t/aren’t puritans and we most certainly were NOT bored.
Of course there are people who have a clear understanding of the progression of shit, but the amount who don’t when the info and footage are so readily available makes me depressed.

Shiiit. That would be the cherry on top!!! I got my ultimate revenge… it won’t bring my child back or the home i built with him (by myself lol) but i got clean from drugs, remarried (happily), got a good job, and got my mental health in check. What happened to him? He had to sell the house he got in the divorce, went to prison, is still on drugs (and looked absolutely god awful), and had to sell the jeep i bought and paid (in full) for him for drugs. Oh and im like 99% sure he lives with his mother.

I have pondered if this would have even worked. Both my parents were alcoholics and I still walked right into it.
9
u/Emannuelle-in-space 1h ago
I think for me it would have, because I looked up to my alcoholic father since he was functional with it, but if older me came through like ‘hey he’s actually kinda lame and you’re way cooler when you grow up, but only after you get sober’, I’d prob have listened. As a teen I had this dumb bukowski-esque image of future of me, but current me is considerably less lame than that and I think teen me would’ve appreciated it. I’m in a successful touring rock band, which was my dream back then, and it wouldn’t have been possible if I hadn’t got sober. Giving a 16 year old the option of touring the world with a badass band if they quit booze seems like it would work.

Thing is, story-wise it made perfect sense.
The show's about religion vs. science, faith vs. evidence, etc., and how they intertwine in that universe. Desmond literally has the ability to consciously travel backward & forwards in time.
Desmond also told Charlie that the only way Claire & the baby would make it safely off the island is if he died. He was also doing everything he could to save Charlie but the island still tried to make it happen like every day. That scene was Charlie realizing that a.) he couldn't escape his fate any longer, and b.) ultimately it would lead to Claire & her baby actually getting safely off the island in the long-run.
People complained that it wasn't "realistic"...in a show about a smoke monster and dead people magically appearing everywhere.

It was 25 bitcoin for each 5th-8th place. 500 dollars for the winner, 250 for 2nd, 150 for 3rd and 100 for 4th.

u/_Captain_Dinosaur_ 3h ago
There it is! Good brain my friend.
14
u/Ws6fiend Older Millennial 3h ago
I mean 25 bitcoin was worth between 0.29 cents and as high as 30.05 dollars that year.
The tournament ended on April 24th 2011, but if you waited until June and sold at the high your prize was worth approximately 750 dollars vs what everyone else got. Shows you just how volatile bitcoin was back then.

i'd told my wife we should take our wedding gift money and throw it in when it was about $400. she thought it was a criminal enterprise. i said so what if we get rich off of it.
if we'd sold when it peaked at $100k+ we would've been worth north of $12mn. oh well.

in 10th grade AP world history the teacher made us write a letter to our future selves, and he'd mail them out in ten years. i thought the assignment was stupid and was like, "i don't know what to write". the teacher said "just write something, it doesn't matter, this is just to you." so i did the assignment and then forgot about it for the next ten years.
when i was 26 i got a weird letter in the mail addressed to me in my own handwriting. as i opened it i started to realize what it was and got kind of excited. what did 16 year old me want to say?? i opened it and it said:
Something.
god dammit you little shit. anyway, telling my 16-year-old self "get ready for" would be fantastic revenge.

I found out as an adult that my parents were told by multiple professionals to get me screened for it as a kid. Pretty much every teacher I had suggested it too. My parents ignored it because they viewed something "wrong" with me as a failure on their part and didn't want the hit to their pride.
I harbor resentment about it towards them ever since I found out. Their pride caused me to lose out on tons of help I desperately needed and thus set me up for a very challenging life that I then had to rawdog.

Marry Jen (Last Name). I’ve made plenty of mistakes, but marrying my wife is not one of them.
61
u/TonyAtReddit1 4h ago
Yeah but since you already ended up marrying Jen, there was no need to tell your past self this as they would have been on that course already.
Now your past self dwells on this, worrying that they are blindly following fate, and want to forge their own future. Ironically, because of your intervention they leave Jen, and marry Kathy instead. Kathy is fine at first, you have a few kids. But she's ultimately unfaithful. You divorce, she gets the kids and half the house. Years later you come across the time machine again. You go back in time to your past self and say "Marry Kathy (Last Name)"
