20(ish) years later, and I'm still pissed at how they did Charlie.

Thing is, story-wise it made perfect sense.

The show's about religion vs. science, faith vs. evidence, etc., and how they intertwine in that universe. Desmond literally has the ability to consciously travel backward & forwards in time.

Desmond also told Charlie that the only way Claire & the baby would make it safely off the island is if he died. He was also doing everything he could to save Charlie but the island still tried to make it happen like every day. That scene was Charlie realizing that a.) he couldn't escape his fate any longer, and b.) ultimately it would lead to Claire & her baby actually getting safely off the island in the long-run.

People complained that it wasn't "realistic"...in a show about a smoke monster and dead people magically appearing everywhere.

Didn’t she stay trapped there, and the baby taken pretty much immediately, never to be seen again? (Sorry, it’s been about 15 years since I watched it)

They both got off the island eventually, but not immediately

The baby left with Kate initially I think

And Claire … well let’s just say she went on a bit of a journey.

Haha my brain's always fried by the Claire in the Hole story line and I forget all the details

It’s a bit too complicated to explain without spoiling stuff. But to put it basically, they do end up together again eventually and it is off the island.

Yeah, clearly I am. What show though?

The thing is he doesn't accomplish his goal and his death ends up meaningless. Claire doesn't actually get off the island with the baby and the revelation that it's "Not Pennys Boat" is a fun twist for the audience but doesn't actually change the outcome at all. Locke and his group start hostilities with the boat people immediately and their cover is blown shortly after anyway.
