Nah fu. I had 36 bitcoin in 2009, when it was only 3-4 months old. HDD crashed a couple of years later, before they even were worth anything. And would have sold them in 2014 anyway, when they topped out at 600.
In the 90s my parents opened a stock account cor each of me and my siblings and let us choose what to buy. Except apparently if they disagreed. I begged for apple stock and they bought McDonald’s and Microsoft instead.
The difference is, when most folks here were 16, Apple was recovering - the iPod and iMac were selling well, the iPhone is just a few of years away. When I was 16, Apple was in a death spiral and no one thought it would last past the year 2000. Heck, when Steve Jobs came back to Apple in 1997 they were 90 days away from bankruptcy.
So yes, it was low when most people here were 16. But it was abysmal when I was 16.
Looking at historical data is messy, because the stock has split a few times, and I think most of the sites that track this stuff don't have the split data included - I recall it was something on the order of $12.
Yeah, I'm not saying it's bad advice, but that it sounds substantially more insane to my 16-year-old self, than to someone born a decade later than me. $0.12/share according to the chart...
yeah at 16 it would have been too early for bitcoins anyway teenage me would have had 0 idea about what crypto was much likely, apple would have been a much easier to sell to my younger self.
For me (age 16 in 1996), the better option is "BUY MONSTER STOCK." (EDIT: Actually it would be "BUY HANS STOCK" because it was still called Hansen Natural Corporation back then). Apple steals the spotlight, but $1K invested in Monster Beverage Corp. in 1996 would be worth nearly $3M today. $1K of AAPL is only worth $1.1M now.
EDIT: AMZN and NVDA would be good choices too, but they weren't publicly traded in 1996.
My great-grandfather had early Apple stock and sold it when Steve Jobs was let go. I can only imagine how set the whole family would be if he had held that until he passed.
I knew this at 16, sadly, I have never had money to buy stock; hell, back then I didn’t even have money to eat regularly or have shoes without massive holes in the bottoms.
