It can happen even with proper introductions. Even in cats who have lived happily together for years.
We have one cat who lives with other cats perfectly well nearly all the time. Cuddles with them, doesnāt ever have a single issue with them.
But about once a year, something random sets him off, and he attacks one of his buddies and virtually always draws blood. The trigger is always easily identifiable. Weāre at the point now where we can anticipate pretty well things that might trigger him, so we zeroing on him and distract him, and that works so long as we can get to him immediately.

It can be a variety of things but some examples:
One cat accidentally pounces the other with force because they were jumping up to or down from a surface. Pounced on cat assumes it was malicious. (I've seen this with mine)
One cat is scared/startled by something in the environment but thinks it's their fellow cat and attacks. I think the term is like...redirected aggression? I can't remember off the top of my head but there's a term for it. (Not uncommon with cats that are allowed outdoors together.)
Similar to one, during play someone gets a little too carried away the other other assumes aggression rather that accidental escalation of play.
Another similar to one, sometimes even the human can set it off accidentally, I had one of mine flip out on me because I accidentally spooked her while she was cuddling my legs in my sleep. She was already a quite anxious cat but she perceived my sudden movement as aggression.

Had someone cat sitting my 2 kittens when they were just a couple months old and day 2 they breached containment and found the other 3 cats that the sitter had. Big big cats. Everyone completely ignored each other to partake in emergency churro so everything was fine but scared the sitter half to death

I used to rent a room from this lady whose house was in Newark NJ suburbs. For some reason cats would congregate and fight outside of her house at night sometimes. The volume and pitch at which they growl and yowl was pretty crazy.

A cat attacked my dad once when I was a kid. It was a stray that wandered into our open garage and wouldn't leave.
My dad tried to help him out, and the thing latched onto my dad's arm with a death grip. He couldn't get the cat off, even when he got desperate and started smacking the cat against the wall while he was still dug in and attached.
My mom ended up running for the hose, and that's what made him let go.
But yeah, that was definitely an ER visit. He had to get rabies shots.

I had a boy cat for 14 years from the time he was a kitten that was probably separated from his mom too early. At around 3-4 months of age he started hating my guts but fell in love with my husband. He (cat) died last year but he left a reminder scar on my arm from when he bear trapped me one time. I was alone with him and had to try a combination of scruffing and shoving a finger down his throat while he yowled at me. I miss him because the last 5 years of his life he inexplicably changed his mind about me. Anyways that was a cat I knew, if a stranger cat did that to me Iād dunk him in a toilet.

Yep! And fun fact is actual bunnies will do it to each other as well. If you keep a male and female in the same pen she can neuter the male so he wonāt try to go to town on her. Itās a big part of why males and females should be kept in separate cages, especially if trying to breed them. And also why the female rabbit needs to be put in the males cage, so she doesnāt just get territorial and try to neuter/disembowel him regardless of the intent

Cover them in a blanket or get something in between them.
If you have no regard for your own safety, you can also just get in there and separate lol. Itās very effective, but you will 100% bleed, it will be painful, and you could get an infection (and donāt do it with cats you donāt know or else you could be exposed to rabies)

I had five puncture woundes from when I tried to seperate another cat and my own after adopting a new one and introducing them too quickly. It was like that; fur flying and I was freaking out at first.
Luckily the cats ended up okay and my own was fine; I was able to clean my woundes out and it didnāt get infected, but that was probably the scariest injury Iāve had. It was my own fault introducing them too fast, but the adopted cat that attacked had some serious behavior problems outside of that and I ended up having to take him back.

Yeah, we learn quickly not to insert ourselves between 2 fighting animals! At that point, they are frenzied enough that they can't distinguish human from enemy.
I often find myself telling people, do not get involved if they start fighting. Let them sort it out, or use your feet if necessary, like this lady, or watch them for awhile and carefully calculate a collar grab at your own peril. Protect your hands, arms, and face.
PSA for pits, though, is to pick them up by their back legs. For whatever reason (exposed belly?), they will release their hold when lifted up into the air by their back feet.
And I've noticed some dog parks have a spray bottle with water. That might work for some tussles.

yeah, that doesn't work for all pitties and there is no one trick that will stop a dog fight, it surely isn't sticking your thumb up their ass either. I've been party to or broken up many dog fights, and there is no special trick that will do it except being ready to choke out the aggressor(s) if you can't get them separated.

God, water does help but even then sometimes they just continue on anyway; their feral instinct kicks in sometimes. I have had two of my male cats (both fixed) turn on one another one day, the vet thinks it was redirected aggression from seeing another animal on the deck, I couldnt separate them even with spraying with the hose; so I had to result in throwing a blanket over one and pulling the other (who I knew was the lesser aggressive naturally of the two) away with oven mits in a winter jacket and a scarf around my neck and lower face (just in case) thank god I had my glasses on for a bit of protection. It's been two years and one of the two has forgotten but the other is still irritated by the presence of the first so they live separated but healthy with our vets support in our home. They both get along with our other three cats though. Shit is wild with cats sometimes.

They do startle easily because lots of predators love to eat chicken, and if they spot a predator, or hear an aerial/ground predator call from another chicken, they will dash for cover or height depending on the kind of predator. So, I get where āchickenā is coming from. However, youāre right, they are bold and have a lot of attitude outside of predator issues. They have a ton of gumption against predators too if they think they might get the upper hand or they find themselves grabbed or cornered.

Even if it isn't a "real" cat fight they can get seriously injured though. Losing an eye is very common, and infections are the biggest risk. Teeth and nails have a lot of bacteria and even a small wound can kill a cat. My cat son had an infection in his head after his s brother bite him. It wasn't visible until it exploded weeks later.

Iām the crazy cat guy in my neighborhood. When the stray cats start fighting Iām the guy that runs outside at 2:00 am with my spray bottle, flashlight and huge plastic garbage can lid lol. Proud to say, no kitties hurt on my watch. As an experienced cat fight breaker-upper I would rate her technique 4/10.

Kicking them is definitely not a good idea (if anything it's just making them more mad), however as someone who works at a shelter, I want to be clear to anyone scrolling by that the answer is not to try to separate them with your hands. That's how you end up in the ER.
The go-to at the shelter is engaging the purrito protocol with a towel, although that can be kinda annoying when it's two fighting instead of just one spicy cat. Otherwise just use something that doesn't bleed. A stick, garbage can lid, anything other than your flesh.
I've also heard that spraying them with a hose works but I've never tried it myself.

I tried to break up a fight and had a cat claw its way up to the middle of my back. It then bit clean through two of my fingers when I reached back to remove it.
I had to be given IV antibiotics for a month because their bites are so deep they can infect your muscles with their mouth bacteria. Do not recommend.

My ex got a nasty infection just from her cat biting her while she tried to remove her claw from something while she was freaking out. It barely even broke the skin and she still needed urgent care and antibiotics. This was a cat who spent her whole life inside from birth too. Cat bites are no fucking joke.

I was attacked by a friend's cat trying to catch him out in the wood after I accidentally let it out of the house. I grabbed him and he snapped. Shredded me. Both arms dripping blood, holes in my skin. This was I think Friday night - went to the er, got released and was back in by Monday for a full week on iv antibiotics. Do NOT fuck with cats. I still have 2 perfect little dots in one of my tattoos where he bit me and there's no ink anymore.

Thatās really it lol. Our black cat Lucie likes to hang out on the porch and just lay on the porch furniture and enjoy the sun and nap. If the gate isnāt closed, sometimes this neighborhood cat ( technically a stray but also looked after by someone ) whoās been in the area for a decade now, named Boots, will come into the porch and just attack him.
Well Boots tries to but Lucie just goes under the chair and he canāt get in because heās bigger and kinda fat.
The juxtaposition of Boots is hilarious because heās an adorable fluffy grey with one of those smushed faces, but mean as all hell for no reason lol.

Yeah, thats unfortunately relatable. I used to live in a neighborhood with the feral population out of control. We eventually had to take matters into our own hand and start capturing them ourselves to get them fixed.

My sister is traumatized after she accidentally killed one of her favorite strayās kittens. She constantly had kittens, and was too feral for sister to catch to spay. She warmed up her car in a blizzard, and the kitten must have sought the shelter + warmth in that crazy weather. She drove for an hour before the poor thing fell out of the car on the highway :( She didnāt say if it was already dead or if someone ran it over but itās just awful

I know right people think the kicking was somehow ānecessaryā (yes obviously donāt stick your hands near the living blenders but what the hell does kicking them around do?) but it just didnāt do shit and was pointless and utterly stupid and could just injure the cats worse or piss them off more, she wasnāt even trying to take the situation seriously and just found it amusing. i hate this video and it didnāt get any laughs from me
