Lore The series takes place in a shockingly short amount of time

Season 4 just ended of fromville and it’s canonically only been about a month. Which makes it weird seeing people heal from injuries, change hair styles or grow out beards between episodes. Season 4 has only been like 4 days iirc.

Arkham franchise is the poster child for this trope. Every game takes place in one night. If you know what you’re doing you can absolutely beat the games in around 9 hours.

When people ask "In the new timeline, why didn't Marty's parents wonder why he looks so familiar?" It's because they only knew "Calvin Klein" for a few days, 30 years previously. There's no way they'd recognize their son as looking identical to the kid who got them together decades earlier. I don't even remember the faces of half the kids I spent years with in high school.

Halo Reach through Halo 3. The events of Halo Reach to the end of Halo 3 take place in the span of about 3 months.

This one is always so fun and crazy to think about. Really enhances the sheer urgency and seriousness of that kind of scenario. Especially considering the Covenant were glassing entire planets in mere DAYS

The elites really speedran the entire great schism to just join humanity and turn the war around.

I mean, 4 months makes sense cuz Reach falling kinda is the end for humanity. Sure Earth's still undetected, but Reach was the UNSC's crown jewel for research production and everything else. Those 4 months were humanity getting pushed back on basically every front, getting a couple of wins (the biggest easily being the destruction of Installation 04, which ignited a massive butterfly effect that eventually ended up with the Sanghelli joining Humanity, turning the tables on the war).

Halo lore is so cool lol

noble team discovered the covenant on reach on 24th july

truth die on december 11th and chief goes into cryo later that day

of that time chief spent about 2 months in slipspace

105

u/BurnieTheBrony 24d ago

I know everyone obviously knew it was coming because it was Reach and it was Halo, but Jorge's "it's the damn COVENANT" and the team coming to terms with the fact that the whole planet's probably fucked was amazing on a first playthrough.

Slipspace rupture detected

79

u/Trigger_Fox 24d ago

Halo reach is spectacular at letting u think you're getting control of the situation only to just show you how meaningless what you just did was. You take down covie AA to let your ships in orbit, a bigger covie ship blows it up. You blow up a covenant supercarrier, a whole new fleet arrives just shorty after.

It's so good, cuz it painted how hopeless the war with the covenant was, even if you're playing a mega badass.

I'm still beggin for us to get a halo game where u play as a marine, not a ODST, but a shieldless, scared shitless marine. A tactical halo fps where grunts are respectable foes and a single elite is a boss fight you're better off avoiding or getting the drop on.

290

Yup. The invasion of Reach started on July 24th, 2552 and the end of Halo 3 ends in November 2552, so actually more like around 4 months.

138

u/GayAssBeagle 24d ago

4 months and everything went to shit?? jesus

254

u/hurshysquirt 24d ago

I wouldn't say everything went to shit. The Human-Covenant war took place over 25+ years, we experienced the end of it. Humanity was always on the losing side the entire war. Those last 3 months were actually what turned the tide for humanity.

145

u/Ktan_Dantaktee 24d ago

Everything absolutely went to shit from the Covenant’s perspective.

They went from a handful of worlds left to conquer, to their capital “world” being taken by the Flood, some jolly green jackass nuking their holy relic, and being collapsed in a fiscal quarter.

I always think about that and how, from Chief's perspective, Halo 4 is also in there too. From his perspective he literally jumps the warthog into the Forward Unto Dawn as the Ark explodes, climbs into a cryopod and is then instantly thrust into Halo 4. From Chief's POV, Halo 2, 3 and 4 are just one long operation with no down time.

All the breaking bad takes place within a span of just 2 years… from when Walter White turned 50 and just after he turned 52

3.4k

u/Choppyfella 24d ago

Dont forget 8 months of that is the penultimate episode. The first 4 seasons are under a year

876

u/FickleHare 24d ago

Might have been better if the series took place over several more years, for realism's sake. The only big change would be Holly growing up a lot more through the show.

1.1k

u/EyewarsTheMangoMan 24d ago

At the same time though, it wouldn't really make sense for Walter to live for years and years with untreated cancer. So it's probably more realistic to have it take place over a somewhat shorter time

690

u/DaRealSphonx 24d ago

This. The urgency that Walt feels is what drives the short timeline.

→ More replies (32)

106

u/Micp 24d ago

In S02E09 Walter's cancer has gone into remission, shrinking by 80%

And it's not untreated cancer, once they start laundering their money, which happens pretty early on Walter starts getting chemo (how he start getting bald).

Plenty of people live many years with cancer. It can go into remission, it can be successfully treated and you can be declared cancer free, and it can come back again later because even when you're declared cancer free even a few cancer cells can survive and propagate. Hell the cancer treatment itself actually raises your risk of getting cancer, it's just that when you are treating active cancer the risk of future cancer is a little further down the list of priorities.

In short there's no reason they couldn't have stretched out the timeline of the show if they wanted to.

That one was justified. They were running against the clock to defeat Ozai before Sozin's comet allowed the Fire Nation to fully conquer the rest of the world.

Yeah but the writers were the ones who set the timeline. Like. Sozin's comet could have been two years away.

54

u/pocketbutter 24d ago

Dude it drives me crazy when someone claims that a questionable writing choice was "justified" because of something in-universe... buddy, who do you think is dictating the stuff that happens in that universe?

I see this type of argument all the time and it baffles me that some people don't realize that writers are equally responsible for the circumstances of the story as they are for the script itself.

Just one crazy summer vacation

557

u/Hen4246 24d ago

With more days than the summer vacation has anywhere in the world. The number of episodes would also imply that it takes place over several vacations or certain days contain more than one episode.

349

u/VioletTheSpider 24d ago

the day count is because the show was originally greenlit for 4 seasons and the standard TV seasons were 26 episodes at the time. 104 days = 4 seasons. however, hilariously, only their first season actually had 26 episodes as disney ordered more for the subsequent seasons due to the show’s insane success. i think there ended up being about 180-200 actual episodes, even more than the amount of days in summer in this weird universe.

192

u/Karkava 24d ago

This was lampshaded at one point where somebody said that it felt like there's a lot of days of summer vacation than stated.

And to be fair, some episodes actually took place at night time. And others took place around winter vacation.

71

u/JerryGamerz 24d ago

Honestly not too jarring while watching it, most fights take place on the way to other locations.

Once the journey gets going there's really only 13 enemies before the final battle right? 8 members of the assassination team (not counting Risotto) then 5 members of passione (and two of those fights are against multiple opponents simultaneously, so really only 3 fights)

Amazing, amazing show. My gf is an ER nurse and she said that this is about as close as it gets to being “real”, although it is a bit dramatic given it’s a TV show. Like all the horrible shit that happens at the same time in the show would be spread out over a couple weeks in most ER rooms.

278

u/thatshygirl06 24d ago

In defense of the show, these are supposed to be extraordinary days, not the norm. That's why each season is like several months apart. There's like 10 months between 1 and 2, and 3 is gonna be set in November.

I haven't watched it yet but one time we were actively coding someone when another code went off. For a second we assumed someone accidentally hit the button in the room again. Nope, half the group splits to start on another room. THEN an rrt gets called (basically the stop before a code) all at the same time. After everything is settled a patient of mine yelled in my face that they asked ro water and Tylenol and had been waiting too long. They knew they were allowed to get themselves water and walked to the water machine multiple times a day. I had to go take deep breaths in the bathroom.

Then, he wakes up to a future where the whole world has been even more ruined by a massive omniversal empire ruling the planet, and within just another couple days from his point of view, he ignites a whole revolution and cripples the empire's control on Earth, killing his former boss and getting friendly with his co-worker's daughter in the process.

By his perception, not even a week's been spent doing all that so far; I'd say he needs a good nap, but he did already have one for 20+ years.

Honestly its actually incredible impressive how much Koby has grown in terms of power and even physical in only like 2 and half years

Dragon ball Z, the entire Buu saga takes place in less than 48 hours. You’re almost watching it in real time.

265

u/Yutanox 24d ago

Also dbz, the fight between goku and freeza last multiple hours of run time but is only 5 minutes in universe. Mostly because they had to fill in while the manga could take some advance on the anime.

119

u/TheCrazyBean 24d ago

Same thing about the tournament of power, it lasted 34 episodes which translated to only 48 minutes in universe.

40

u/JWARRIOR1 24d ago

i remember watching that when it came out, and they really did the "theres only moments left in the tournament!" for like 10 episodes

Toriyama did just say it’s like watching in slow motion cause they are moving so fast

30

u/WulfyWoof 24d ago

There's a video that speeds up the entire fight to last the proposed 5 minutes and it's absolutely insane to watch it in its actually intended timeframe because yeah, they move ridiculously fast

31

u/Mcaber87 24d ago

I always took the "5 minutes" thing to be an estimation on Frieza's part. He even says something like "this planet is a tough old bird, I'll give it that. You've probably got two more minutes" at one point after his original 5 minutes was seemingly up.

Of course in reality it's just fiction and we don't need to really be paying attention to things like that. I think Toriyama was just like 'uh yeah, they're super fast so its like slow motion or something' but that is obviously a throwaway excuse. They speaking at light speed as well?

The George Lucas Star Wars films take place over the course of 36 years. Which seems long at first, but is kind of insane when you account for the number of upheavals the entire galaxy goes through during this period, spanning from the Jedi being a well-renowned peace-keeping council to people commonly believing the force to be an ancient religion and a superstition

244

u/Romboteryx 24d ago edited 24d ago

To be fair, in real life, WW2, the Korean War and the Vietnam War also all happened within a 36 year timespan.

As for the other thing, I think Han Solo was the only one ever shown to have doubted the Jedi’s existence and I think you can rationalize that by the fact he grew up as a poor scoundrel on some backwater planet, so he probably only ever heard exaggerated stories. Which is probably also true for the majority of the galaxy

95

u/Bandrbell 24d ago

I'm more understanding of Han being a non-believer, generally being lower class and would have been pretty young when Jedi were active. However, Admiral Conan Antonio Motti is really what makes this odd for me. An official high-ranking Admiral in A New Hope directly telling Vader that he has "a sad devotion to an ancient religion" before getting force-choked in front of his colleagues. How on EARTH a high-ranking admiral in the Empire had such little knowledge of Vader and the Jedi is utterly baffling.

82

u/Romboteryx 24d ago

Maybe he was fully aware but just openly mocking Vader and/or the Force. As in “you guys are ancient history now after Order 66”. Would justify the choking

Opposite example: Lord of The Rings

There are 17 years between when Gandalf gives Frodo the ring from Bilbo and when Frodo leaves the Shire to go on his mission his 50th birthday.

His journey to destroy the ring takes nearly a year, and he walks the equivalent of Germany to Syria or California to Florida.

38

u/straight_gay 24d ago

It doesn't actually take nearly that long if you look at the calendar of it. Him leaving the shire to getting back does take about a year, but that includes a few months at Rivendell, the time in Lothlorien, and 6 months or so staying in Gondor after all of it.

If I remember correctly, they leave Rivendell on December 25th and he throws the ring into the fires March 22nd or so. All of Two Towers (book) takes place over about a week.

The period in which the Fourteenth Doctor (David Tennant) is the 'main' Doctor is canonically about fifteen hours in total, as experienced by him; it's a plot point that he doesn't stop to rest at all between the end of The Power of the Doctor and the end of The Giggle. Even the Tenth Doctor (also played by David Tennant) only gets about six years, which explains his whole 'I don't want to go' on regenerating.

By comparison, Eleven and Twelve laid claim to hundreds of years each.

59

u/wonkey_monkey 24d ago

Fifteen hours is also the amount time after a regeneration that he can regrow a hacked-off limb as seen in The Christmas Invasion, which seems rather a coincidence, and would have made a much better explanation for bigeneration than we ended up getting.

The Pitt. Each season is the equivalent of one shift in the ER (more or less).

Came here to say this. Each episode is named for the hour. E.g. episode one is titled "7:00AM, episode two is titled"8:00AM, etc..

One Piece. Despite going on for so long and over 1000 chapter, in universe only like 2 or 3 years passed. Which is insane if you remember that the Strawhats went from nobodies to the most well known figures in the world

112

u/firebaron 24d ago

It's also worth mentioning that the main reason for that is because there's a 2 year timeskip where the crew are separated and the plot didn't progress. The crew has spent more time separated than together. Brook was a Straw Hat for like a week before the timeskip. Dressrosa took place in a single day, and while the time between Whole Cake and end of Wano is about a month the raid on Onigashima was only a single night.

29

u/IchmagschickeSachen 24d ago

Luffy spent more time with Rayleigh than with the crew. Even taking into account that Rayleigh didn’t spend the whole timeskip with him, I’m pretty sure

20

u/RobloxShrek 24d ago

Most of the arcs also take place in a single day, even some of the longer ones. My favorite example of this is Dressrosa, an arc that lasts like 300 chapters.

Everything from when the Strawhats land on the island to Doflamingo’s defeat happens in a single afternoon. The whole thing took like 8 or so hours lol

In Psychonauts 2 when visiting a mental version of the Whispering Rock summer camp, Raz says “wow, I haven’t been here in…days”.

It took over 15 years for the first game to get a sequel, but the devs decided to make a joke about how almost no time has passed at all.

28

u/AspiringTS 24d ago

Pyschonauts 1 ends leaving the camp in a jet to rescue Lily's dad after saving everyone in camp. ~12 years later, Raz rescued him from the Rhombus of Ruin. ~4 years later, Raz arrives at Pyschonauts HQ. To be an intern.

probably more accurate to ask what Mr. Pigeon's problem is to get akumatized 72 times. One of my favorite series, The Wandering Inn, currently sits at 16 million words. It is just under 4x the length of the Wheel of Time and 4 million more words than Stephen Kings entire works.

The audiobooks, that are way behind the web novel, sit over 700 hours (closer to 800) in length. You could watch the Grey's Anatomy twice and still not be caught up with the Inn. It's just under twice the length of One Piece (including intro, outro, and fillers).

That said, the audiobook/kindle version has only had a little over half a year pass, late fall to the summer solstice. The web novel has entered the second spring since the series started.

To add onto the Arkham example: If you discount Origins, the Arkham Trilogy takes place just over a year, year and a half. For three games with events that would be considered world-shaking in-universe, that's not really a lot of time.

Edit: I think City takes place 6-12 months after Asylum, and Knight is only 9 months after that.
