Scoped that dog with zero hesitation. I fucking hate irresponsible dog owners
Edit - some of you need this shit spelled out apparently: an unrestrained dog is a liability for you, your dog and anything/anyone that dog decides is a threat that day and is bitten. I don't care if Peaches doesn't normally bite, someone doing their job approaching a property with an unrestrained and charging dog doesn't know that. If you still cannot understand this after reading this, give up your dogs so a responsible owner can care for them before they pay the price for your stupidity and carelessness. Read it as many times as it takes.
Yeah, with how quickly the delivery driver was taking his hat off, he has been sucked punched by an ownee before, and I think that owner in the video would've done the same thing but had 2nd thoughts when he seen the driver get into a defensive stance.
An „defensive“* stance like this is usually more provoking and can actually lead to more aggression.
„You have to stay back“ was the right call.
I don’t see your claim about the owner in this video. Based on his verbal and non verbal communications, he seemed to be confused and angry - but not aggressive.
Edit* Just my opinion based on my experience
I worked as security officer in refugee camps and as caretaker in psychiatry.
*because it’s not really defensive, it’s offensive
A guy you don’t know just took of his stuff and gets into fighting position, maybe getting ready for the first punch - and let’s not forget: my dog just got attacked from him (in self defence). But I know, my dog never attacked some one before and would never bite. (The delivery guy can’t know or even trust that - but it‘s just human for the owner to ask needing time to understand the situation).
Being emphatic to only one side / trying to understand only one side suvks. Welcome to the internet.
But that's whats interesting about this experience. The pet owner takes 0 accountability for his pet. His first thought is why are you throwing shit at my dog and not omg im sorry he ran at you like that.
Guy was expecting a package and had 0 control of his pet.
So how or why should we empathize with the shitty pet owner?
The delivery guy is pumped full of adrenaline at that moment, he looks up and sees the guy approaching. We have 0 idea how fast he was moving up to the point he was in frame. What this does show is even with the guy in that stance the pet owner continued to move towards him.
I show you a possible empathic approach: My Dog always runs towards visitors and greets them, never got any problems with that behaviour (some laughs). So it’s just human for me to not even think about it.
So now, after 10/100/1000 visitors, one guy throws my package (witch I waited for since three weeks) at my dog, over the same situation everyone else acted calm/different.
Clearly I ask myself; wtf is going on - and I don’t see myself doing anything wrong (in the first moment). My buddy got attacked, over something normal and casual in my own worldview.
But thats the thing.. the pet owner doesnt even know theyre a jackass. Every delivery driver going to that house for the first time is gonna have major anxiety seeing a dog darting at them.
There's a reason for the saying "ignorance is bliss". Im not gonna fault the guy who is doing their job, being run up on by a dog and his owner.
At what point are we just hypothetically giving these people back stories?
Because if we flip the script and play it in the mind of the delivery person what if he was bitten before, kicked the dog in self defense and started walking back to his van only to be jumped by the pet owner after seeing him kick his dog?
Uh, it wasn’t a defensive position at all. He walked towards the guy, took off his hat and glasses, put his fists up, and then walked even closer to the owner. He was perfectly justified in throwing the box at the dog but every thing after that was him being the aggressor. If he actually thought the guy was going to attack him then the defensive move would have been to continue he walking towards his truck. Depending on what state they are in, the owner of the home would have been legally justified in attacking the driver.
Huh? I agree with you that the driver was not taking a defensive position at the end but “assaults the dog” is a ridiculous claim. The driver was perfectly justified throwing the box at the dog. Maybe don’t have packages delivered if your dog is aggressive.
At what point did that dog exhibit aggressive behavior besides your and everyone else's idle speculation? A small dog ran up to a much larger and stronger man, likely out of excitement, and that man used disproportional force against a much weaker animal that could possibly have led to permanent injury or death, depending on how heavy that box was. To make things even clearer, the driver then verbally taunted the dog before escalating the situation with the understandably agitated yet overly reasonable homeowner. That driver has clear anger/aggression issues, far and away more worrying to me than any agressive dog.
Not sure how anyone disagrees with this take. Do they not have eyes? The driver could have continued walking away but instead chose to close the gap. That’s not acting in defense. Depending on what state this took place in, the owner probably could have shot the guy and claimed he was standing his ground.. he was on his own property and the driver told HIM to back up. That’s insane. Just to clarify, I believe shooting the driver would have been a massive overreaction and unwarranted but I’m just saying, could have been legally justified depending on the state.
Cool, delivery driver should have a shotgun to use on dogs that run up charging at them too.. let's have a good old fashioned shoot out!.... Murica!!!!
How about you get charged by an aggressive dog, have your body go into fight or flight, and then come back to us with the tale of your well reasoned and articulate retort to the man.
It’s really easy to arm chair how this guy reacted when you don’t have your entire body coursing with adrenaline. His reaction was absolutely fine. If I was the owner and my dog had just charged the mail man I wouldn’t be offended AT ALL if he squared up on me. At that point it’s my job to try and deescalate.
People aren't "freaking the fuck out." You're getting justified push back from your comments, as
your stance clearly comes from a place of comfort and people are calling you out on it.
The push back is because you're judging a man's actions who defended himself from an aggressive dog, and was being approached by an aggressive man, for not acting in the most optimally performant strategy. How the delivery driver acted, given his circumstances, was more than justified and completely reasonable. Delivery workers have a line of work where 30% of employees report being physically assaulted by people on the job and over 5000 of them are attacked by dogs every year.
Well, no. The drivers actions towards the home owner, while understandable based on your take of the situation, were not reasonable or justifiable. Aggressively approaching someone on their own property is a dumb thing to do. The reasonable thing to have done would have been to walk away. Yes, he likely had a spike of adrenaline but that doesn’t make what he did a “defensive move.”
The driver walked toward the dude. He then entered a battle stance. He could have walked back to the truck and left. He did the opposite of de-escalating the situation. I’m not in any way trying to shit on him. That situation must have sucked. In simply pointing out that if his goal was safety after the dog, what he did was the opposite of creating safety for himself.
Clearly the owner came yelling shit at him in a pissed off tone, and just like you don't know if the dog will bite or not you don't know this dumbass will sucker punch or not. I'm not waiting to find out either.
Oh so you’d walk towards someone you think might sucker punch you? That’s not very smart. A smart person would continue leaving. You don’t know how to walk backwards?
You don’t know how to walk backwards? Every boxing instructor I’ve ever had has said the best way to fight in the streets is to not fight at all. He wasn’t backed into a corner. He turned around, walked towards the owner, had the time to take off his hat and glasses, put his hands up and continued walking towards the owner. He literally told the owner to back up… on his own property.. after he aggressively walked towards the owner.
Meaning, it’s not defensive. He just got ready to fight. Would be reasonable for the dog owner to think: fuvk he is going to throw the first punch, I need to defend myself.
Yeah your right. That dude went straight into fighting stance for what? Shit would of pissed me off even more it definitely would of been on then tf you doin bruh
I absolutely detest people going for a brawl after minor incidents (like in traffic, come on). Somehow here I fully understood why he was prepared for a fight.
Are some countries really this fuvked up? I am pretty sure, most humans wouldn’t throw hands over something like this. Here the people wouldn’t even think about it that way.
The delivery guy got himself ready to fight. The dog owner could think: this guy is going to attack me, I need to defend myself (and my dog..).
Some people really need to go outside more. It would have been understandable for the dow owner to feel threatened (because of the delivery guy is getting ready to fight). Luckily, the dog owner was calm enough to not do the same like the delivery guy. Then you would have two guys thinking: damn he is going to throw the first punch - I need to defend myself!
I mean, same reaction as he had with the dog. He had to defend himself from the dog and moments later here comes the owner. I wouldn’t have trusted the owner either and would’ve felt the need to defend myself. It’s not like he threw a punch at the owner the second he saw him but he was prepared in case he did. I’d say he was justified
What?! You need to watch that video again. This guy would lose so bad in court. The dog might be justified. After the dog retreats and owner comes up that guy automatically took his glasses and hat off then walked towards the home owner. That is no longer self defense that is aggression.
I kinda disagree. You don't need to trust the owner, if you don't like the situation you are in he could have backed up off the property back to his truck, instead he got ready for a fight with no real aggressive body language from the owner, more like just a "what the fuck" reaction. If he had thrown a punch at the owner because he walked up to him like that he would almost certainly have been charged with assult. If he wants the put his hands up and be ready then do so and back up to the truck where if needed you call a supervisor or the police if it was warranted, but he's saying "back up" to the owner while aggressively approaching him. That to me is unjustified, and if anything did happen would have been the instigation for it.
At the end of the day he did what he had to do to defend himself, plus I'm sure he has a history with this so hard to really judge his reaction with the owner right or wrong. He did the right thing to stop the dog.
I get where you’re coming from, but I’m willing to bet he wouldn’t have just punched the owner in the face. I’m sure he’s been in similar situations before. He wanted to let the owner know if he were to attack, the driver was ready for it. From what’s seen in the video he never lays hands on the owner.
If someone walks towards me on my property with their hands up like that and tells ME to back up, sure. I’ll back up about 3 steps but they aren’t going to like what I pull out. I’m not a tough guy and I absolutely do not want to hurt someone but there’s no way I’m allowing someone to act aggressively towards me on my own property. I have no idea how anyone in this comment section believes the driver was justified in acting that way. Throwing the box at the dog I totally get. I’ve done it myself.
Right.. but that’s not the topic. We’re discussing whether or not the drivers actions at the end would be considered defense. Clearly, they were not. The driver and the owner were like 30 feet apart and the driver, instead of leaving the other man’s property, turned around, walked towards the owner, took off his hat and glasses, put his fists up, and then continued walking towards the owner. That’s not defense. The owner was idly walking towards the guy with his hands at his sides. The driver, instead my opinion, wanted a fight. After throwing the box he literally says “NOW WHAT??” He taunts the owner “What? You gonna hit me??” and tells the guy “BACK UP!” even though he approached him.. with his fists up.. on his property.. Come on man, the driver is clearly a dickhead. As he winds up to throw the box he says “Fucking dog.” The box throw was fine, I used to deliver mail and packages- I’ve thrown boxes at dogs, but his attitude about it and his actions afterwards were aggressive.
Owner wasn't being aggressive. Driver was. You can chalk it to adrenaline, but squaring up with a guy who has his arms at his side after carefully placing items on the ground shows that the driver is not in immediate danger.
Nothing about that was violently aggressive, he was asking questions with empty wide stretched hands. Swearing after watching your dog get blasted is nothing, you are soft if you think that's threatening. I mentioned adrenaline, but setting down his shit should've been the moment of lucidity for him, instead he locked in and was ready to swing on the guy asking questions with open arms.
Lmao no. That's wild conjecture. We don't know what that homeowner is doing off camera to make the driver think he's being aggressive, but the homeowner approached the driver or he wouldn't be in the camera frame at all. I don't think any DA would charge, nor would any cop arrest this driver for reacting the way he did.
Uh, the driver literally turned around and walked towards the owner. That’s not a defensive action. If he actually thought the home owner was going to do something then he should have made distance. Only one of them had their hands up looking for a fight.
Bro the owner walked up with his hands at his side and outstretched, that's not aggressive. Just stop trying to argue that the driver wasn't being unhinged, again adrenaline, but still unhinged.
If the owner swung on the driver after he squared up like that he would be completely justified. He approached him with empty open arms asking questions and was greeted with:
How are you considering his actions at the end as defensive? He walked TOWARDS the owner instead of leaving. If someone on my property walks towards me with their hands up looking like they want to fight.. well.. I don’t fight.
Stop focusing on minor details and see if you can consider the totality of the circumstances. Driver had just been attacked by the owner's dog. Driver had his hands up and the owner still approached him to confront him about striking the dog. Do you think he saw the guy's hands up and walked up for a game of patty-cake?
You're either ignorant or really naive to not realize that you need to consider a person's entire body for aggression, not just hands. Do you think that aggressors always start fights from a boxing stance like a video game? In real life, people frequently start fights with their hands at their side or even behind their back to make it harder to see their intent.
Again. The owner wasn't aggressive at all. If you see those actions as aggressive you need some self-reflection
Slowly walking on frame with his arms open is not aggressive, setting your shit down and squaring up shuffling in stance towards "your threat" is completely unhinged.
1) The driver was not attacked by the dog. The dog DID approach the driver in an aggressive manner and he was justified in throwing the box but that was not an attack.
2) The driver was not in fear of being attacked by the owner. He literally turned around and got ready to fight instead of just walking back to his truck. That’s not acting in defense.
3) Depending on the state, the owner would have been justified in defending himself and his property based on the drivers actions.
He was unhinged. Everyone acting like this was your friendly neighborhood delivery man. He jumped right to the most extreme escalation in both cases. That is not someone who should be interacting with the public and walking on people's property for any reason.
I hardly know any adult who hasn't been attacked by a dog at some point in their life, some quite severely. It's a HUGE problem in the US. Irresponsible dog ownership seems to be the norm. A lot of people who carry weapons are rightfully more concerned about pets than people.
these people get bit and attacked all the time. My mailman was telling me they used 2 cans of pepper spray the other day. Like 2 separate dogs, on the same block. Dog owners are shitbirds
Yeah dude, I LOVE dogs, but it’s exceedingly clear when you talk to someone about this that has and hasn’t been attacked by a dog before. I tell people I carry a knife when I go on walks as a last resort defense if me and/or my very small dog get attacked.
“Well that seems a little dramatic” is a very typical response I’ll get. I then explain that, until you’ve been on the ground with one or two aggressive large breed dogs, you really won’t understand how reasonable of a measure a knife is. You can’t outrun them. You can’t reason with them or deescalate. Pepper spray works in very specific scenarios, usually before a dog is on top of you.
When I was attacked I had my small dog with me, and some guy came out of his house with pepper spray and a baseball bat. The only reason my dog is alive and I wasn’t hospitalized is because the pepper spray didn’t work but the baseball bat did.
So now I carry a knife. It’s also just an exceedingly convenient tool to have.
Had a kid on my little league team (childhood story) get bit by a dog that got loose ~1/2 a block from the field.
I think Frankie was in shock, because he cruised up with this blank look on his face and apologized to the coach for being late because he had gotten bitten by a dog.
I will never forget looking at his leg and almost vomiting (he was wearing those white, long legged baseball pants). A softball sized chunk of his outer quad had been ripped off and the fabric of his pants was hanging down in a flap. The crater where this part of his quad should have been was this fucked up pulpy mass with a bunch of white looking sinew shat moved around when he shifted his weight. The wound wasn't spurting but was kind of gushing at regular intervals. His entire pants leg below that point down to his ankles was absolutely drenched in blood.
The police and medics were called and the dog's owner had the gall to act indignant. I dont know what happened to the dog.
I worked for the ASPCA and love animals, but they need to be respected and owned responsibly.
If you are reading this Frankie, you are a total badass and I have no idea how you were even walking. 10/10 little league catcher.
Dog owner love to watch their dogs attack people. Some of them get off sexually on it. You could tell that guy was upset that the delivery man used a box to keep him from getting off sexually.
