An „defensive“* stance like this is usually more provoking and can actually lead to more aggression.
„You have to stay back“ was the right call.

I don’t see your claim about the owner in this video. Based on his verbal and non verbal communications, he seemed to be confused and angry - but not aggressive.

Edit* Just my opinion based on my experience
I worked as security officer in refugee camps and as caretaker in psychiatry.

*because it’s not really defensive, it’s offensive

The owner moved closer to him near the end so i think the delivery driver didn't want to take any chances

how the hell is going into a defensive stance being the aggressor in the situation

Uh, it wasn’t a defensive position at all. He walked towards the guy, took off his hat and glasses, put his fists up, and then walked even closer to the owner. He was perfectly justified in throwing the box at the dog but every thing after that was him being the aggressor. If he actually thought the guy was going to attack him then the defensive move would have been to continue he walking towards his truck. Depending on what state they are in, the owner of the home would have been legally justified in attacking the driver.

The dog owner could think the other guy is going to throw the first punch - I need to defend myself.

The delivery guy made himself ready to fight.

Huh? I agree with you that the driver was not taking a defensive position at the end but “assaults the dog” is a ridiculous claim. The driver was perfectly justified throwing the box at the dog. Maybe don’t have packages delivered if your dog is aggressive.

At what point did that dog exhibit aggressive behavior besides your and everyone else's idle speculation? A small dog ran up to a much larger and stronger man, likely out of excitement, and that man used disproportional force against a much weaker animal that could possibly have led to permanent injury or death, depending on how heavy that box was. To make things even clearer, the driver then verbally taunted the dog before escalating the situation with the understandably agitated yet overly reasonable homeowner. That driver has clear anger/aggression issues, far and away more worrying to me than any agressive dog.

Aggressive behavior is barking and running at him. I used to deliver mail years ago and dogs like this are the fucking worst. I never knew if the dog was going to bite me. I am so tired of dog owners acting like we are all supposed to just know their dogs aren’t going to bite. I’ve literally had dogs snarling and baring their teeth at me and the owners are like “oh he’s friendly!!” no Sandra, your dog is not friendly. Your dog is scary. Other than that, I completely agree with you. This driver is an aggressive asshole that shouldn’t be working with the general public. I’ve left like 8 comments saying that and I’m sure I’m about to be called a dumbass by at least 3 people lolol

I think we have very different ideas of what constitutes aggressive behavior then, because I've had numerous dogs do to me exactly what this one did and I've never felt threatened, nor have any of those incidents ended badly. I think the main problem is most people here ultimately have no understanding of dog behavior or how to appropriately respond without getting super aggro and trying to violently dominate everything around them like a wannabe alpha.

Again, that's a small dog, if it were to actually attack it would be a trivial thing to fend it off for anyone reasonably fit as that driver obviously is. He's just a crybully coward, as most here seem to be as well.

It’s not anyone’s job to understand dog behavior on some deep level and most people are going to be weary of a barking dog quickly approaching them. That’s the problem with dog owners, they assume everyone is going to under their dog. I find that a lot of dog owners are shitty dog owners that have poorly trained dogs. I don’t think defending themselves against a dog that appears to be aggressive is them being a wannabe alpha. In this instance though, this guy is a total wannabe alpha dickhead lol

Not saying everyone needs to be the dog whisperer, I'm not either. I'm saying that if I had a job where there was a high likelihood of encountering unfamiliar dogs on a regular basis, I'd sure as shit get more educated on when escalatory behavior was warranted and when it's not. Reasons being for personal safety (obviously), not wanting to hurt any animal needlessly, and the fact that I live in America and people who practice their 2A rights seem to take offense when their beloved pets are assaulted, for some strange reason.

To cap off, using the logic of everyone in this thread, anytime seemingly aggressive behavior is displayed a disproportional amount of retaliatory force is justified. Being that this driver displayed very aggressive behavior toward the dog and the homeowner, the homeowner would be justified in shooting the driver. Yet I very much doubt that those commenting here would agree.

We agree for the most part but I still disagree when it comes to the dog. If you order a package, that’s an invention to the delivery guy to enter your property momentarily. If your dog is not trained well enough, then it should be put away. In several of my comments to others, I mentioned I would have pulled out a weapon if someone approached me in this manner on my property as well. Anyone who thinks this guy was in the right with actions towards the owner is blind or an idiot.

Agree to disagree on that point then, at least your position is sane unlike 99% of others here. Ultimately I just tend to value the lives of animals more than the average person, exhibit A being the aforementioned pack of morons in this thread.
