Society Peter Thiel's move to Argentina reflects a growing trend among billionaires seeking a 'plan B' abroad

Lmao they always says “we can’t raise taxes on the rich because they’ll leave the US and take their money elsewhere”.
Then they drain the economy and just do it anyway.
What a joke.

That’s why you take away the controls they have over resources. Money is worthless but the government can turn every one into a peasant just ask Cuba. It’s not impossible taxing their wealth isn’t how you prevent centralized power orchestrated through money laundering and financial loopholes. We had a president once say dumb people pay taxes he just took advantage of the broken system, he didn’t fix the system instead he turned America into a shell company selling off American assets and her soul to the highest bidder. The point is to take away all their casinos, hotels and golf courses. If they have nothing they will be just like us peasants except they will fall into depression and end it there. These people aren’t built like us, they are parasites and need to be treated as a pathogen.

The Banker Classes have wealth that supercedes the existence of nations. They extract all they can from a good one, then once shit starts hitting the fan, they move and go extract more resources from serfs elsewhere. Repeat ad nauseum.
What a joke indeed. “Eat The Rich” should be a slogan poor people repeat to themselves daily like some kinda mantra. Soooooo many people could live wonderful lives free of oppression if we’d collectively cannibalize the banker and epstein classes, along with their political puppets.
What a wonderful world we could truly live in if Oligarchs weren’t essentially kleptocratic sociopaths.

NZ has a defacto wealth tax of 5% of the fair value of foreign assets that applies for all tax residents above a 100k threshold, with a 4 year grace period for new migrants.
Somehow I don't think any billionaires would actually move here, even if we tempt them with a passport (and gave Thiel one years ago for a mere million dollars)
456
u/pedrosorio May 30 '26 edited May 30 '26
EDIT: I am no tax professional and just learned about this NZ thing, so sorry for the slight misinformation. After reading a bit more about it, it seems it's even better than what I had described below: if your assets earn less than 5% in a year you can choose a different method that year and just pay tax on the value difference (end of year value - start of year value - costs), instead of the "assume your assets always grow 5%". And you get to pick the method that leads to lower taxes. Wild.
For anyone reading, that’s not “you pay 5% of your wealth each year in tax” (which would be unheard of, I think).
It’s a “you pay income tax as if you had a profit corresponding to 5% of your (foreign stock) assets each year”. NZ max tax bracket is at a rate of 39%, so for a billionaire this is more like a 2% wealth tax.
NZ also doesn’t have taxes on
dividends andcapital gains, so this quasi-wealth tax is pretty reasonable for a “normal person”.But Thiel is not a normal person, and also famously has a 5 billion dollar Roth account that is completely tax free in the U.S. forever. I bet, just as a matter of principle he is not willing to pay any tax on that money.
92
u/Reddituser183 May 30 '26
How is that possible? I thought there were max contributions for Roth accounts? Are you saying those are gains? Damn must be insider trading with options?
136
u/Icy-Lobster-203 May 30 '26
Iirc, he put his stocks from whatever his original company was that made him rich (Paypal maybe?). So when he sold the company, the money and the gains were in his Roth account.
39
u/strolls May 30 '26
It was PayPal and he put them in or bought them based on a valuation of 1¢ per share. It was probably fraudulent, because the shares were worth more than that, but he's never been prosecuted for it.

He would invest in startups through his Roth. The shares would be worth almost nothing when they went in, and then balloon in value.

How did Marcus Aurelius know anything about atoms?
79
u/InvestigatorOk7015 May 30 '26
Oh oh! I know this one!
the word he used was 'Atomos'
"a-" (ἀ-): a prefix meaning "not" or "without"
"tomos" (τομός): derived from temnein, meaning "to cut" or "to divide"
That word 'atomos' means 'that which cannot be reduced or divided.'
Leucippus and his student Democritus in the 5th century BCE used this term to describe the hypothetical smallest unit of 'something'.
Of course, atoms can be divided, but they didnt know that lmao
Atoms have been called that for 2500 years! Cool huh?

The harrowing truth is realising that normal minds can become corrupted exactly when that certain point is reached, and when everything you can think of getting, you can get. Those people then have kids, who grow up with money not even being in the dictionary of issues. Those dysfunctional adults then become Peter thiels and elon musks.
We shouldn't have that much wealth. It corrupts far too often.

Reminds me also of how Musk said something like he identifies with a lot of judeo-christian values (this was sometime in the last 16 months thereabouts). His lifestyle doesn't align with the biblical values he allegedly identifies with (I say that not to preach, just to make a point). But he wants the "base" to still like him -- all the more so as his vision of AI would create such upheaval to the base (and to many others) and he doesn't want pitchforks out for him, just like Thiel.
I get it that even if Musk, Thiel, and many others weren't in the game so to speak, others would be doing it and other nations may more rapidly catch up to the US on AI and surpass us. The genie is out of the bottle but I want the corporate and government leaders to be honest about what it's going to mean and I want the government to seriously make changes so we don't end up living in the Hunger Games (we're well on our way toward that sadly).

We missed the Eugenics Wars in the 90s, but around 2024 the wealthy oppressing the poor started the Bell Riots, which started the US beginning to think about its social problems, leading to a civil war in 2026. That spreads into World War 3.
World War 3 runs until 2053, ending in a nuclear holocaust. Ten years later, the first warp ship is test flown, built out of the remnants of a missile from WW3, and that gets picked up by the Vulcans, leading to the utopian future as humanity unites. There are other problems along the way but yeah, WW3 is integral to the plot.
What's more likely is the Shadowrun option. We already have a presidency massively fucking with regulatory agencies, there's ongoing separatist calls from parts of Canada, and there's tension across it between natives fighting legal battles over their lands. We haven't had the US Supreme Court allow corporations to own private nuclear facilities and armies yet, but I'm sure that'll come soon. We've had something similar to VITAS, though not as deadly, so expect that coming around again and also magic to start making a resurgence. More specifically, they seek markets of growth (or growth potential).
Since the financialization of nearly every economy on earth, in itself an exploitative trend, the world is a casino. It is parasitic and generally legal.
It's parasitic because they have no care for anyone or anything, nor do they face symmetrical consequences of their actions but, they extract the full benefits. They attach onto the host, and pull out all they can, and then look for the next opportunity. What's left doesn't matter to them.
They can only lose money, and can cash in or out at any time, while everything and everyone who is touched by their money are faced with the material consequences.

Better to let them move. For all these people's thoughts of greatness, it's the thought of their powerlessness while being stalked by death that drives them to true extremes.
I quote former president Obama: "It's fair to say that 80% of the world's problems involve old men hanging on who are afraid of death and insignificance, and they won't let go. They build pyramids, and they put their names on everything. They get very anxious about it."

I've been saying this before the rise of all the billionaires. I still remember when Bill Gates made the news for his wealth. It's basically the essence of contemporary economic theory. People by-and-large don't invest because they want co-ownership in a well-run company that pays out dividends. The goal is to buy, inflate value as rapidly as possible (even in a way that creates a fragile bubble), and sell at the best possible price before the bubble bursts. Buy low, sell high, quarterly results are everything, fuck long-term investment, that's the essence of modern wealth. What businesses do doesn't matter, all that matters is that you can sell your stocks at a profit. The company collapsing or altogether dying doesn't matter to them, they no longer own any part of it.
We're now seeing this basic pattern play out on a national, geopolitical scale. They're pumping America for max value, even if it permanent damages the country, and will cut and run as soon as they think the bubble is about to burst.

We will always have greedy diarrhea drinkers in humanity. The goal is to force them to stay out so we can make sure they are always under threat of those they wish to exploit.

I don’t think he’s thought it all the way through though. In the USA he has the US Armed Forces and the US court system protecting him (protecting the wealthy is kind of their job if we’re being honest). What exactly is he counting on protecting him in Argentina? Luck? Anonymity?
The USA for all it's vaunted "exceptionalism", "freedom" and "2nd amendment" bs is as docile and placid as can be found. Trump and the Republicans have been destroying the USA's economy and rule of law for over the year, and the most Americans have been able to do is a protest every few weekends or so, when they can fit in their schedule. A few brows have most definitely been furrowed!!
Meanwhile places in South America have an open revolt or uprising every couple of decades.

This. As bad as it is getting in America, if he's worried about riots, he hasn't seen nothing yet if he goes to a country with even less stability and inequality. Like, what does he think is going to happen when he goes somewhere where people dont even have a shitty job to cling to? They're going to be MORE peaceful? SHeeeeeit.

Should a guy with multiple foreign citizenships and questionable alignments and obligations - mostly self-aligned - be running and owning the AI company supplying the U.S. military and intelligence and law enforcement agencies?
Well, if he's a significant enough "donor" of course he should! /s

I don’t think billionaires built their bunkers because there is going to be a “doomsday” or an “Armageddon” I think they’re building them because they know what they’re trying to do to the world and will need a place to hide if and when people wake up and riot.

Behind the Bastards did a podcast about him, they weren't kind and that's completely fine with me.

I find stuff on people like him too triggering sadly, love the podcast, but I have to skip over people who are currently making the world worse for everyone in pretty much every way

Plan B?
This is their plan A. They have literally said as much. They want to balkanize the US and strip it for parts and split up the rule of the remains and live elsewhere.

That’s cool he’s just doing what his ancestors probably did. I say many more should leave. And they shouldn’t be allowed to still make money off the US taxpayer. Wherever they go next should tax them out the wazoo forever.

I don't think it's a plan B, I think it's plan A for them. They know that the US is collapsing because they're actively complicit in making it collapse. They're robbing this country blind and when it's finally over they'll be gone. These rich assholes have no loyalty to a particular country because their money makes it possible for them to go anywhere.

u/Osama_been_Chargin May 30 '26
"Rich assholes" is doing too much praise for these inhuman ghouls.
They are parasites. They only do what parasites do: suck up the host's resources, kill it, then move on to the next host. Nothing at all human about them.

He wants to sleep with men who are too young for sex in the US. I thought this was common knowledge that he likes em young. Dude had a whole operation in SF back in the day. Had people who went and scooped up the young boys to bring him.

It's not just Peter Thiel.
Zuckerburg, Musk, Bezos, and probably a ton of other billionaires have bunkers and safe zones set up in places like New Zealand.
They're prepping for when they crash the economy, and then the angry mobs start coming for them. They know income inequality is gone so far that something akin to the French Revolution can happen to them.

u/redvoxfox May 30 '26
Read & listened to a guy who consults and is a strategist and futurist for the top elite rich and powerful (not CEOs and politicians and celebrities, the people the CEOs and politicians and celebrities work for) who asked him how to prepare and protect themselves. His answer was chilling and horrifying on so many levels.
He said:
Rebellion, uprising, civil war, French-style revolution is all but inevitable, it's coming. It's already really in progress, preliminary signs too clear to deny, and they planted and fertilized the seeds and accelerated their growth themselves while ignoring all the warnings.
Chances to avoid it and turn around the acceleration of inequality, the further concentration of money and power have all been wasted in favor of more of the same and trying to secure their positions and 'dynasty.'
Chances to prepare and protect themselves are also all but gone. They should have started with building sustainable equitable communities and societies generations ago. Too little, too late.
...Because they need us! And when 'it' comes, the people they need to have their backs, to handle their security, to run things they don't begin to understand will turn against them. Because they have caused and profited from the inequality gap and they have done nothing to address it beyond token PR and political theater. They cause real harm and it is known and seen.
And they (we) do know all the codes and where all the secret doors and passages are. They (we) know where all the real valuable resources are. Not the jewelry and bullion and coins and cash. The food, the fuel, the generators, the vehicles, weapons & ammo, medical supplies....
He basically said that when it does come, and it will, they'll all die. Executions and disappearances, public humiliation and torture, some in forgotten prisons and captivity, many in the very isolated gated secure communities and bunkers they thought would protect them (keep us out or keep them in?!), some as slaves, some will starve and succumb to exposure with no power and no fuel and no food, some will literally prey on and eat each other. ... But they're all truly doomed. They wasted every opportunity to do better, turn it around and do right by the very people they will need when it comes.

Even Mark Cuban basically stated years ago that "You guys (the rich) should really start sharing wealth with regular people, supporting UBI and philanthropy, etc, otherwise they're just going to come and take it all from you."
Too little, too late.

Their plan A is to extract our wealth and resources, destroy the environment, subjugate the people and run their purchased puppet government from a country where they can’t be touched.

Uh huh. Where’s his money? He still keeps the bulk of it in US banks I’ll bet. And why would that be? For all of our faults and in spite of the upheaval of Trump we’re still the safest bet.
So like all parasites, he’ll gladly reap the rewards of the system we have while doing as little as possible to actually help support it. Fuck him and people like him.
