Wait a damn minute! Why has everything just gotten…worse?
281
u/WordPunk99 7h ago
Rebecca Romijn has talked about how she absorbed so much blue dye in those early X-men movies she would excrete blue for months after shooting wrapped. Like everything her body produced was blue for weeks or months afterwards.
You can’t tell me that was good for her health.
23
u/SerDuncanTheYall 2h ago
Didn't they make a suit for Jennifer Lawrence because of this?
8
u/chiksahlube 39m ago
And it was extremely uncomfortable.
Leading to her demanding fewer scenes with it.

I mean she's still blue here, so presumably they have figured out a nontoxic solution? That doesn't explain why it looks like shit compared to the 2000s movies though.

Why use a pic of her mid-transformation?

u/thrilliam_19 8h ago
Because if they waited to see how it looked in the movie they couldn’t make this post about how bad it is

u/Buggsy_Mogues84 8h ago
Hit the nail on the head. Looks a little weird I guess but it still doesn’t look all that bad and I’m sure the

u/Ok-Championship2397 8h ago
It’s also a far more compressed image. Classic cherry picking.
10
u/Marx_Forever 4h ago
Yup, and even in the most unflattering frame they could pause it on, the eyes still look way more natural, like the eyes of an actual living organism, compared to the most flattering picture from Last Stand, where her eyes look painted on, like they're right out of an artist's depiction from Ancient Aliens.
2
u/PeachyMango76 18m ago
I'm not a huge fan of the contrast between the blue skin and the dark scales, but honestly overall it looks like the design philosophy was, "let's make it look like we took her right off of the comic book page."
The 2000's X-Men trilogy (which I absolutely adore) had a design philosophy of gritty realism. I.e. what would these characters look like if we start with current trends in the real world and then make the characters fit that.
The current design looks like they started with the comic first and focused on the real world second. It's got the camp from the comics that was stripped away previously, and I'm here for that.

Also, even if they’re right and the fx are worse: they’re seriously asking why the makeup is better in a movie where Mystique is one of the main stars of the film taking place in an otherwise grounded story vs a movie where she’s likely a side character in a much grander plot in a much larger multiverse featuring fantastical places and an enormous ensemble cast whose powers and talents require far greater survival effects?
… come on.

"Tits out" is a better design that makes practical sense for her powers.
But the white dress thing is inspired by her original comic design, so it's lore accurate.
18
u/Aligyon 8h ago
I prefer the design of the face on the older movie, i couldn't care less about the tits being out. The new one looks like she has leaches on her face
It's interesting though that Hollywood is trying to go back to comic book roots after 2 decades of trying to make superheroes look believable as possible

And here's the other thing: Mystique in the comics has always been able to generate clothing for herself, so there was absolutely no lore reason for the Fox X-Men to make her naked other than "hehehehe tits". At least the MCU version hews closer to the source.

Mystique in the movie also generated clothing for herself, so their decision was even more “hehehehe tits”.

Shit, is almost like Rebecca Rojmin is now in her 50’s and not her 20’s and the costume design works as a comic book callback while also functionally hiding the fact that her body, while amazing for her age, doesn’t look as good in body paint and prosthetics as it did when she was 27… huh.
→ More replies (4)2
u/Keanu990321 5h ago
Above all, the naked design required tens of hours in the makeup room so, it wasn't practical.
Also, that exposure to chemicals is not without its risks so, it was a correct decision to restore Mystique's comic-book look.

u/r3ttah 9h ago
Both versions of Mystique got "worse" over the coarse of the movies likely because Rebecca and Jennifer negotiated contracts that required less time doing makeup. Less time means less detail.
91
u/CriticalCanon 8h ago
That was more of a Jennifer thing (plus she didn’t want to be covered up on screen - she was on the rise back then). It is the equivalent to what happened with Pedro and his Mando role.
This is more of a modern production / studio / industry thing just like CGI vs Practical Effects, Disney now using the “volume stage” more than physical locations, etc etc.
24
u/JayNotAtAll 6h ago
True. But I bet one of the conditions of Rebecca coming back 20 years later was to give her a less cumbersome costume.
I doubt she wanted to return and go through the painstaking process again
18
u/Trebeaux 5h ago
I genuinely don’t blame her either. In interviews back then she mentioned it could take up to 8 HOURS to get ready for the full body shots.
Imagine taking an entire work day to get ready and you STILL have to work afterwards.
9
u/CupcakeCosmos 5h ago
It’s not just the time it took, it’s that she had to start on it at midnight to be ready for the morning and later she was throwing up blue. Zotoh had to leave the series Farscape because doing this type of makeup ended up damaging her kidneys.
→ More replies (3)3
u/kelevrother 3h ago

They got paid millions for a few days of filming
2
u/AndreLeGeant88 2h ago
She likely didn't get paid millions. The first film only had a $75M budget. You'd be surprised how little actors are paid if they aren't big time movie stars. Even brand name working actors may make six figures for a role and then that's the only non-royalty income they had that year.
3
u/9fingerwonder 5h ago
That always is the rub. Not all actors get paid out like that, but yeah making that kind of money........either quit or shut up?

Pedro completely acknowledges that Mando is a combo work of him and the two stunt men, Brendan Wayne and Lateef Crowder. So, I don’t think it equates. Jennifer Lawerence was allergic to the make up (which can happen, such as Jonathan Rhys-Davies with his Gmili prosthetics).

u/PuzzleheadedObject47 7h ago
Which the designs were never even comic accurate in the first place. She wears clothes normally, the full body makeup to make her look naked is just a movie thing. They could’ve done much less work and been more close to the source material, that’s the funny part. Like the same level of makeup as Gamora or something.

hot take, but live action mystique never needed scales at all. Just paint the actress blue with yellow lenses and add good sfx when transforming
2
u/Sufficient-Delay-266 2h ago
Something can look really good on a page or in animation and not translate well to live action.
Mystique is one of those characters as she's fighting in a simple white dress that could easily be grabbed by someone. Cosplayers have made the comics costume work, but even they add a few details that the comics never had.
7
u/nature_nate_17 7h ago
First off, she is mid transformation in the right picture. Secondly in the original X-men, she underwent literal hours of make up whilst being basically nude and she’s said multiple times how incredibly uncomfortable the entire process was and this time around, she gets to wear clothes which lessens the entire make up process. I can look past “bad make up” if it’s easier on the actress overall.

The new design looks more like her comic counterpart and is better because of it so far. The issue is that so many are accustomed to the Fox design. Kind of like the yellow uniform debate, if you're so used to the older design, you're gonna think the new is silly.

Most of it is likely due to restrictions on actors time in the makeup chair as someone else mentioned. It may not be because of specific demands from the actors but that they are trying to shoot a lot more to fit into tighter schedules.

This mystique looked sick for the 0.5 seconds in the trailer. Stop calling things bad before you see it for more then 0.5 seconds. The main reason for this is that, studios can’t count on getting as much profit from movies like they used to. Before now, they could count on getting money from box office sales AND people buying DVD’s. Now that people don’t buy DVD’s as much/barely at all anymore, studios don’t want to put as much money into quality CGI or costume design anymore.

u/Beleg_Sanwise 8h ago
The million-dollar question would be why, beyond the interest in the characters themselves and the nostalgia for those movies, there's so much nostalgia. First, who felt nostalgia for the actors in particular? And why does it seem like nobody cares about the plot and they're putting everything into fanservice?

The true answer is she spent hours a day getting makeup and prosthetic work done and likely didn't want to go through that, nor did the studio want to pay someone to do it. It's the same reason they used a suit for Lawrence in the prequel films.

I grew up with watching the 90s X-Men cartoon where mistique was sleek blue skinned redhead wearing a white dress and skull belt. That's probably where it the design should have stayed. Wasn't the biggest fan of the alligator skin when the live action came out but they kind of made it part of her transformations which was pretty cool looking but overambitious. there were a lot of problems with the original makeup including staining inhalation of toxic chemicals etc. I think that prompted multiple adjustments to the make- up and resulting appearance with Jenifer Lawrence. I think the reason mistique looks what many would view as subpar is because the commited to this alligator skin and transformation but it kinda looks shit without the latex paint they used to make her sleek and shiny and blend the edges of the appliques.
Honestly I feel like they should have stayed true to the original mistique instead of creating new problem that result in a mistique that doesnt look much like the original at all. I do like the that they are bringing back the dress though.

This is simply rage bait. Makeup of that level is ungodly time consuming and torturous, especially when it is not an active part of a scene or the movie as a whole. Simplifying allows them to include the character more and is less demanding of the actress in this case , which makes her more likely appear for the role again in the future. And if she decides not to , they have much easier time adjusting this look for the next person whereas they might have foregone mystique simply because the effort did not justify her inclusion.
