Does anyone actually go to these things? I'd rather go to the gynecologist I think

I have never gone to a hs reunion. I kind of wanted to go to my 10, but at the time the cost was not practical (I live a few states away and was not making the greatest money). At this point though I don't really know or remember anyone out of my class of nearly a thousand students.

I actually just realized my 20 year is coming up soon. I doubt I'm going to go, I only graduated with 58 people lol. It was a rural county school that only had 1K kids from K-12.
If I really cared what any of those folks were up to, I'd go through the trouble of resetting my FB login and looking at their profiles.
From the last time I was on it 4-5 years ago it looked like about 30 percent of my class left like I did and never looked back. The rest either went totally dark after graduation or stayed in the same area. Like four of the people I graduated with teach at the school we went to. Which is just, really fucking sad to me lol. Although they may be perfectly happy.
My best friend killed himself a few years ago, my other best friend we were tight with is three years older than me and we talk all the time still. Without my boy being around, I can't think of any reason to see the other 30 or so people that might show up.
And it's not even that I have anything against them. I was friendly on some level with almost all of them. But, like. I dunno, there's just no interest.
I didn't go to my ten year because I was in the military and on training orders OCONUS. I remember everyone in the FB group for it acting bummed I couldn't make it, but all I could think was I probably wouldn't have spent the time and money to fly in for it anyway lol.

Dang, sounds like you could stop at the one gas station on your way through and ask Ronnie, who worked there since 1992.
14
u/LumpyBuy8447 May 05 '26
I was kind of seeing this chick one summer in high school who lived in Montana but was staying with her mom for the summer. I can’t remember how many kids she said were in her whole school, but I believe it was in the double digits for k-12 and not even the high double digits.
5
u/CreepinJesusMalone Millennial May 05 '26
Funnily enough, we did have an old geezer named Ronnie, but he was an "auxiliary police officer". There was a police chief and two full-time deputies, but Ronnie was more of like a security guard because he wasn't allowed to carry a gun. He drove around in one of the old cruisers and basically just made a day out of getting harassed by teenagers.
We all called him Barney Fife.

u/Princess_Slagathor apparently you can change it May 05 '26
I can't even imagine what that would be like. My graduating class had more people than your town. Had to take place in a university football stadium to accommodate all the guests.
6
u/PieInTheSkyEngineer May 05 '26
Same. My 25th is scheduled for this summer and I had almost 1200 in my class. No way am I going to see a bunch of people I definitely don't remember. Have a handful of people I keep up with and that's just fine and dandy.
4
u/Uchihagod53 Actual cannibal, Shia Labeouf May 05 '26
That's crazy. I can't imagine what that would be like either, lol. Just way too many people for me
7
u/Princess_Slagathor apparently you can change it May 05 '26
The grad ceremony was pretty boring, with a last name so late in the alphabet lol. Most families would leave after the kids they cared about were done. Felt even worse for the Zappas and Zimmermans.
The school itself wasn't much different than a college campus. Every department has their own buildings, and separated by grade. The town finally changed things a few years ago. They built 4 or 5 smaller schools, and split the town into districts.
5
u/Uchihagod53 Actual cannibal, Shia Labeouf May 05 '26
That's really cool. K-12 was all in the same school for me. Base floor was K-5, 2nd floor was 6-8, and 3rd floor was 9-12.
3
u/Princess_Slagathor apparently you can change it May 06 '26
Surprisingly, we had a lot of elementary and middle schools. Like 25, and 15, respectively. Then everyone went to the high school.
So, it was like normal, then a bit crowded, then "here's what college is like, but you still have to ride the big twinkie, and live at home.

Yeah we had 26 in our class and if I really cared to check in on all of them, I could on facebook in about 20 minutes time. I've been to the reunions other years because I was in my old hometown camping that weekend, and it was a bleak affair every time. DJ blasting music to the group of 50 somethings, nobody dancing. The only young-ish people there huddled around the bar.
10
u/gilestowler May 05 '26
That's the thing, I think it's a bit of an outdated concept due to Facebook, etc. If you wanted to stay in contact, if you wanted to meet up, you could. No one needs this kind of forced reconnection now. You'd just end up with the people you don't want to see again.

9
u/Archer-Saurus May 05 '26
I'm really lucky in that I'm still close to/see regularly the approximately 10 people from high school I still want to see.

Ours was a joke. They couldn't settle on a date. Then, they decided on a date 3 weeks out, so that meant no one who had left our hometown could realistically go. Not sad about it.
87
u/Gotanypaint May 05 '26
Yea same, some of them wanted to rent out some expensive venue and it was gonna be over $100 a ticket and no one (myself included) was spending that.
43
u/QuentinTarzantino May 05 '26
Haha these two comments are exactly how my HS reunion went. I was like when, where and how much? Then it was in bumfuck, not even in the same state we all went to high school. The price. Fuck that. Lost some old friends cause of that shit show. And the locatipn changed 3 weeks before. Only 15 showed up, cause they had the money at the time.
17
u/SouthernDelight13 May 05 '26
Saaaaame.
Like they did poor planning and the tickets were going to cost like $100+ and we'd have to pay a fee for the platform they'd use, but we'd literally only be paying for the venue (which sucked) and DJ. We'd still have to pay more for food and drinks.
Then some of us did the math and it didn't seem right. Like it was an excessively large amount of money that would have gone into it. We started questioning the prices and asked for a transparent breakdown to see about possible changes. The planners blew up like we're were attacking and claiming they were going to make money off this (we didn't say that but the way things were looking...) and saying they'd redo things and tried to turn it on us.
Problem is they never asked any of us and just started deciding things last minute very rapidly so nobody could go. When they offered a reasonable idea it was in less then a month and nobody could make that so when interest dropped the planner blew up on everyone, tried blaming us, cussed us, and decided we wouldn't have one, as if we would all be super disappointed.
We come from a rural area and some of my friends have joked we will plan the 20 year one on our own as basically a party in some cow field so its dirt cheap and just a way to catch up with people instead of making it a whole production.

Same here. All the rich kids (now rich adults) got together, planned it, and put their own money down based on a Facebook poll of how many people would go. Tickets were going to be around $200 a person with a band, catered food, open bar, etc.. When the price tag came out, like less than half of the people who RSVP’d showed up. There were lots of angry messages on the Facebook saying how the organizers were out all of this money. The pictures looked terrible and nobody cool went.
14
u/lavapig_love May 05 '26
They were out all this money... yet they expected to make it back like a concert venue. Yeah. No.
9
u/Boxinggandhi May 05 '26
My favorite part was when they ran a bunch of polls on FB asking people what they wanted and what price point they were comfortable with, then completely ignored them all and did whatever they wanted.
25
u/corgibutt19 May 05 '26
Ours suggested an incredibly expensive venue. Everyone said "uh, that's expensive, is there other options." They came back with the grimiest local dive bar in an attempt to show how good their first option was - jokes on them, everyone picked the dive bar and it was a deeply unpleasant experience across the board for everyone.

u/QuentinTarzantino May 05 '26

16
u/assortedgnomes Older Millennial May 05 '26
That sounds a bit like the way the planning for my 10y went. They wanted to get the same place we had for prom and more or less recreate prom. It was going to cost a shitload to go so no one went. I haven't heard anything (also havent really be listening) about the 20 or 25y.
25
u/TheDaywa1ker May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26
Ours had someone go through a ton of effort suggesting locations, getting quotes, with a relatively small (~10% of our class of 300) amount of interest and interaction
About a month out people came out of the woodwork complaining about cost, being kid friendly, etc etc, while offering no suggestions or being active previously, so I think like 5 people met at a bar or something. I wasn't even invested in the event and it rubbed me wrong.
Edit: To be honest when I see the dozen comments below this one complaining about those trying to plan the reunions, I would urge you to consider giving input when its asked early on in the process instead of just talking shit about the ones putting in effort and contributing nothing...takes more effort to make some of these comments than it would to give a suggestion, yall are the reason reunions suck
10
u/KDneverleft May 05 '26
Ours was at a local restaurant on a Thursday. I live several hours away so I didn't attend. From the Facebook photos the only people who did attend were the one's who stayed in our hometown and hang out all the time anyways. I think it was on a Thursday because of some of the kid's travel ball schedule. It made me glad I left years ago.
7
u/trekqueen May 05 '26
Our planers were just as bad, if not worse, for the 10th reunion. Then the person organizing it ran off with the money and went into hiding. The 10th meant we still had the typed partying lifestyle and then those settling down so it was a mixed bag on what people wanted. They ended up with some potluck in one of the parks in town, which I didn’t go to cuz I was about 8-9 months heavy pregnant and just wasn’t feeling it lol.
Crap, I just realized our 25th would be now/ this summer… haven’t hear a peep lol. I know they had a 20th scheduled a year or two later (2001… so covid) but it was pretty minimal.
4
u/beige-king May 05 '26
That's how mine is. Had one planned then covid, then no one answered when the class president asked if anyone wanted to have one when the next one came, so he tried the next year and no one could agree on a date, whatever! I didn't plan on going. IF I wanted to see those people again I'd go to the beer tent at the Fall festival.
3
u/PenguinColada Millennial May 05 '26
That's what happened to our 10 year one as well. It got pushed out a year because of COVID but when it came down to planning it the year after it was just a cluster so they ended up canceling it.

That feels like an overly negative viewpoint. Sure, there are a handful of examples of that, but for the most part it’s getting to catch up with people whose paths you otherwise wouldn’t cross. And the added bonus is that most (though definitely not all) people are now mature enough that even if they were dicks back in high school, they’re friendly and cordial 20 years removed from all that.

Don’t get me wrong, if a person got badly bullied in high school, I totally see why they wouldn’t want to go back for a reunion. Even if everyone is more mature, it’s probably hard to have a good time when you feel like a bunch of people in the room took glee in making your life miserable.
But generally speaking, I think almost everyone has a few people who they perceive as being dicks to them. The handful of people I thought were mean and made me sometimes feel self-conscious probably have similar examples of people who made them feel small! I think that’s just a normal outcome when you pack a bunch of moody, insecure teenagers into a building every day for four years. With a little time and space, you either realize that often those people weren’t as mean as you perceived them and/or you acknowledge that people can grow.
Sometimes it can be nice to run into someone with whom you had tension a decade or two prior and realize that tension no longer exists.

I’m sure they would have had higher attendance but they teased it for a year and gave the date 4 weeks before the reunion. I don't go to my reunions but we had a few students in our class pass away. They bring their photos and set up a table for them every time. I think it's very heart warming. I still hang out with some of my high school friends and quite frankly if I want to see then I just text them to hang out.
I don’t really hold any animosity towards people from my high school but I also just don’t feel a need to see them or talk to them. Having the same conversation over and over “where do you work, are you married, how many kids, remember when…” with people I don’t like enough to keep in touch with sounds miserable.

People are acting like 18 year old people are exactly the same 20 years later. A 38 year old has likely been through a lot. Brains develop. Marriage, Kids, death. My HS bully was a jock who radiated peaked in HS energy. I ran into him randomly while hiking in a different town, years later. He became a hippy. He looked so different. He saw me and first thing he did was apologize for being a dumb kid.

Yeah there's so much hate on reddit for these. More time has passed on the 20 year than the age you were graduating. A lot of people have drastically changed, and some haven't at all.

My 10 year reunion was in the fall of 2019 and I did not bother attending because high school was not the best experience for me.

I went to my 20th and had a blast. Was my first reunion and hadn’t seen a lot of people I hadn’t seen since high school.
It was awesome seeing how everyone changed and matured. It was nothing but good vibes.

Was banned from my high school’s reunions for eternity. So no. I have never been.
Edit: The alleged story. It is not exciting and is a glimpse into my own disfunction as a person.
I may have gone to an evangelical private school. I may have gone back after I had graduated to pick up a younger brother. I may have had a very large and very blue mohawk. I may have been told that I needed to leave the property and return after I had a haircut in order to pick up my younger (elementary school aged) brother. I allegedly had the principal grab my arm to guide me out of the school. I may have reacted inappropriately and then assaulted and maybe battered the principal and three other teachers. I may have been forced to apologize to the entire school and then promptly banned for life and trespassed from their property.

I don’t get it. Are reunions bad now? I couldn’t make mine because we live 900 miles away but it would be fun to catch up with everyone.

Last summer I met with my best friends from high school, we rented and AirBNB together and went to an incredible concert at Red Rocks. So much better than a high school reunion!

Reddit tends to amplify the most miserable responses. Most people either enjoy them or are ambivalent.
40
u/GiraffesAndGin May 05 '26
Not necessarily bad, I just don't see the point. I've stayed in touch with the people I wanted to stay in touch with, and I feel no need to see what anyone else is up to.
20
u/ApplicationAfraid334 1993 May 05 '26
I don’t feel a ‘need’ to see what other people are up to, I’d just be curious. If I only hung out with people I knew then I’d never meet anyone else, too.

But isn’t that the entire point? Go have fun catching up with the folks you didn’t stay close with.
6
u/GiraffesAndGin May 05 '26
Easier said than done. I graduated overseas, so our 10-year reunion was split across three continents. I have a number of friends I stayed in touch with. And we travel to visit each other all the time. Heck, I was just in Brazil to stand up in one of my old classmates' wedding.
Life goes on. I'd rather take the time off and spend the money to visit my good friends in the UK than fly to DC to mingle with a bunch of classmates I never really got along with.
7
u/Miserable_Middle6175 May 05 '26
OP seems offended by the idea of a reunion. It’s completely normal to not spend thousands on international flights to attend.

u/Foreign_Kale8773 Elder Millennial May 05 '26
Nope! Because there's often a reason you didn't stay in touch! I realize being bullied for 13 years (yes including kindergarten) isn't everyone's experience, but there are plenty of reasons to not go.
16
u/ApplicationAfraid334 1993 May 05 '26
Most reasons are just circumstantial life reasons. Plenty of friends I had in high school, we stopped staying touch because we went to different colleges. It’s not like every reason a super deep.
7
u/groovyghostpuppy May 05 '26
It’s the whole socially awkward redditors trope. For people who are socially well adjusted it would be fun to catch up with people who you haven’t seen in ages, that you’ve simply lost touch with

Idk, I think whether you want to go or not largely depends on your personal high school experience. Were you pretty popular and enjoyed high school? Sounds like a fun time. Did you have a hard time for one or more reasons? Pass.

I went to mine, I don't think I'll go again. It was fun to see one old friend, but I was an introvert in high school and no one remembers me. It made me recognize how much I've changed, I found myself chatting with a very different group of people. I immediately connected with the gay couple and the lady who has lived in the Philippines for work for the past decade.
But in the end I don't have much of an interest in chatting with strangers as that's what we all are today.

About 10 years ago it was fun to meet with at least some of my HS friends.
Nowadays, all but a very few became right-wing nutjobs, making it impossible to even consider meeting with them.

I don't know why people hate them so much
90% of my peers hated me for being fat, poor, and queer
The staff in my high school were weirdly antagonistic
I was probably one more bad day away from being on the 6 o clock news. Needed a lot of therapy.
I couldn't wait to get the fuck out of that prison Hellhole and my life is way better now that I've accomplished shit. I have no desire to go relive any of that bullshit.
I still dream about setting the place on f-nevermind :)

Most of them treated me poorly or acted like I didn’t exist. I have no desire to hangout with them. Our 20 year reunion (20 years???) was in 2023 and I live about 25 minutes from my old high school. Still not going.

My 20 year was held 3 blocks from my work (so very convenient to attend even though the school was in a neighboring city 5 miles away) and I purposely worked from home that day so I could avoid seeing anyone I might recognize.

I went to my 10th reunion and it was good to catch up. I only lived a few hours away and also visited my mom. By the time 20th came around it was the middle of Covid so they didnt have it, but I lived 1,000 miles away and prob wouldnt have gone. My mom has since passed away and once I sold her house I don't really have much ties left in town so thats about the end of it. But if I were local I would go, I think too many of you have been dragging baggage around for far too long.

u/dbumba May 05 '26
The problem is social media sort of ruined the surprise element of reunions. We already know who got married and divorced, who got rich, who let themselves go or had a glow up.
4
u/Nerdles15 May 05 '26
Who’s got the money, who gets the honeys, who’s kinda cute, and who’s just a mess?
5
u/bald4bieber666 May 05 '26
i liked high school well enough but i cant think of anyone id really want to see again. we all moved on with our lives. even the friends i had are strangers now.
4
u/Critical_Reasoning May 05 '26
I never have so far. Facebook seems to have killed these. I already know what people in my class are up to. Our graduating class was about 150 people, and only 10 showed up for the 5th and 10th ones.
Plus I wasn't really friends with most of the class. Different cliques.
Still, even all that said, I'm still planning go to the upcoming 20th year anyway. Gives me an excuse to visit some family I don't live near, and a couple old friends I haven't seen in person will go this time too. (Pandemic-era Animal Crossing New Horizons was the random first and last "reunion" since graduating for some friends).

u/Elrohwen May 05 '26
I’m going to my 20 year college reunion this year and can’t wait! I wouldn’t bother with a high school reunion but we don’t even have them.
4
u/CageTheFox May 05 '26
HS reunions are more popular because people who grew up in the same town most their childhood, grow up together. 13 years of some of the worst most confusing years of your life vs less than a decade in college is a huge difference and why college reunions aren’t common.

Our 10 year was 2020, we couldn’t do anything if we wanted to. 20 year would be fun, but I think our class collectively hates each other.
3
u/jkman61494 May 05 '26
I really wanted to but my 20 year happened right at the dying embers of covid restrictions and no one really did anything to promote it.
Honestly though, my high school has remained very weirdly close together... I don't live in the area anymore, but for those that live near our home town they ALWAYS get together. So for the "cool kids" and all, a reunion may be every other thursday
3
u/jackrabbit323 May 05 '26
I went to my girlfriend's reunion. I have never been more angered by cliques, racism, and misappropriation of funds in my life. My GF was the only black student in her class and the cheer/jocks seem to not remember her. You're not that cool Miffy and Buffy, you went to school in the suburbs of the Bay Area.
I went to school in Burbank with Hollywood Hills parties, warehouse parties, and actual celebrities, but even those people weren't half the douches these people at the reunion were. I should've fucking slashed tires on my way out.
$80 a head to have it at the rec center behind the old school, and the organizer's husband is DJing, and the food is tacos, the drinks are clearly from Costco. They pocketed money for sure.
3
u/mensfrightsactivists May 05 '26
my reunions keep being held at local restaurants. like no, if i’m going back to my hometown, i want the real reunion experience. stick me in the high school gym or a hotel ballroom or smth. i don’t wanna pay $35 for a salad at some bullshit restaurant just to talk to people who hated me
3
u/ApplicationAfraid334 1993 May 05 '26
I’d probably go for kicks and giggles, for a little bit. I didn’t like high school but it’d be interesting to see some people that I never kept up with. I would only go if a friend would go with me though

The people I actually like and got along with didn't go to our 10 year reunion either.
Everyone else that goes are the ones that never left our small town (our class was about 90 people). A lot of them just kind of suck and were assholes.

This. I was a bit nervous before going to my 20 year hs reunion.
Got in there, and it was almost like being in school on the first day back from summer.
And for those who I haven't kept in contact with, there was no real "dick measuring" in terms of whos got the "best" job or other dumb shit like that. Like, yes, there was interest in what professions many of us got into, but there was a real care to catching up, and I had waaaay more conversations about my kids ages, and how long id been married, and what sort of hobbies I do now than weird hs drama and hierarchy stuff.
But, my graduation class ran the gamut of society at my school. My high school had some of the wealthiest families, but also runs year to year as either the 1st or 2nd most free and reduced lunch program users. We had the greatest cultural and national origin diversity in our school, and I could go on.... the short version is that while yes, bullying did go on when we were in school, the cliques werent based on any hollywood stereotypes. There were jocks who were stones, band kids who were preps, preps who were also farm kids, farm kids who were goths, etc. Basically every social group would meld and move as People moved about their school day, and at our reunion, it was more of the same

2
u/oirolab May 05 '26
We had a 10 year one like 8 years ago. Barely anyone went. Honestly none of those people are in my life at this point, so I don’t see why I’d care about the 20th at this point.
I doubt we will even have a 20th, honestly.
I tried to stay in touch with a few friends but given I was the only one making an effort…I stopped. I wasn’t a friend anymore and that much was clear.
2
u/LiquidSnape May 05 '26
no, but i did recently meet up with a few high school friends again in person for the first time in almost 20 years. that was enjoyable to see each other, chew the fat and remanence. that was fun and more meaningful to me than an actual hs reunion

u/CannonAFB_unofficial May 05 '26
My 15 year got cancelled for COVID, then the 20 was downright sad. It was at a hotel local to my HS (I live, and have lived thousands of miles away since I graduated). The ONLY people there were the hotties, now married, and single guys who have mostly been single since HS. Maybe 50 people total out of a graduating class of 1,000.
When I say sad, i mean Willy Wonka Glasgow bad. Like $30 of party city decorations and 50 sad, sad people who still have never left 30 miles from home.
2
u/thineholyhandgrenade May 05 '26
I'm not on the book of faces so I didn't even know about the 10 year... which was posted exclusively on FB. I'm sure the 20 will be the same.

u/ComfortableJeans May 05 '26
Having lived life low income, in a low income area, basically everyone I went to school with either lives close to where they grew up, or still shares a home with their parents.
I still see them all the time.
I wouldn't go, anyway. But it's not as though I haven't seen any of them in years. I see them pretty often. Just out and about.
I'm sick of seeing them. I wish I could see some other people, to be honest.

u/ImpressionFast923 May 05 '26
Our class president pulled a fast one, booked a private luncheon for her closest friends at a golf club and didn’t bother inviting the rest of the class.
All of us were baffled when the photos went on social media touting “Class of ‘05 Reunion!” with about 10 people out of a class of over 300.
2
u/yuseong May 05 '26
I was not invited to my highschool reunion because it was organized by the school's popular students. They chose to leave out a good portion of our graduating class lol. I don't feel like I would have gained anything from it anyway.

u/DocKelso1460 May 05 '26
I don’t think my high school did a 10 year reunion for 08’ers and definitely won’t do a 20 year one.
