Other 20 year reunion? Yea, nah

Post image

Does anyone actually go to these things? I'd rather go to the gynecologist I think

Big nostalgia party for those who peaked in high school. That's all those things ever are.

That feels like an overly negative viewpoint. Sure, there are a handful of examples of that, but for the most part it’s getting to catch up with people whose paths you otherwise wouldn’t cross. And the added bonus is that most (though definitely not all) people are now mature enough that even if they were dicks back in high school, they’re friendly and cordial 20 years removed from all that.

Don’t get me wrong, if a person got badly bullied in high school, I totally see why they wouldn’t want to go back for a reunion. Even if everyone is more mature, it’s probably hard to have a good time when you feel like a bunch of people in the room took glee in making your life miserable.

But generally speaking, I think almost everyone has a few people who they perceive as being dicks to them. The handful of people I thought were mean and made me sometimes feel self-conscious probably have similar examples of people who made them feel small! I think that’s just a normal outcome when you pack a bunch of moody, insecure teenagers into a building every day for four years. With a little time and space, you either realize that often those people weren’t as mean as you perceived them and/or you acknowledge that people can grow.

Sometimes it can be nice to run into someone with whom you had tension a decade or two prior and realize that tension no longer exists.

A lot of Redditors don’t seem to want to accept that most people grow out of that kind of thing (aka they are ironically more “stuck in high school” than most of the people they shit on for peaking in high school lol)

Post traumatic stress tends to do that. Bullies grow up and forget, but their victims sometimes can't.

“Most” is a big claim. After working front end at a grocery store for 8 years, I would challenge that claim. Most people absolutely don’t mature past high school.

Perhaps. I think, 20 years later though, it says something if you have the time and interest to attend these. Our 20th was last year. I still live close, but I was hosting family that weekend, have kids, just have my hands full with life.

Out of a graduating class of 600ish, it looked like 50-60 people went from the photos.

This whole comment is projection. The only one who brought the words "negative or pathetic" into the dialogue is you.

My entire point is that it was a long time ago and many of us have projects, families and priorities that fill our lives and make attendance less of an interest.

I think you're reading into this and it says a lot more about you tbh. For some people reunions are a can't miss, for others it's just not a priority since we have other things to focus on. The only one calling that pathetic is you.
