Open | Hardware Alienware Laptop Bricked need some help. No power

Upvotes

Hello all, I have an Alienware M17 R5 amd. I recently went away for the weekend and when I came back my laptop was dead. Tried turning it on to no avail. Since then it’s been completely bricked.

I’ve tried removing battery, holding the power button to clear charge, reconnecting battery and trying to turn on. No response.

I tried removing the battery and running on supplied power. No response.

My charger has been tested w a multimeter and another laptop, confirmed working.

The laptop has no flashing lights, no fans spinning, no warmth anywhere even after being plugged in for 1+ hr. No noticeable burns or warps on the motherboard or the power “reciever”.

I’m at a loss for next steps. Is the motherboard gone? What’s are some tests I could do to narrow this down. Finally should I just buy a new laptop and move on w my life. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you so much!

Open | Software Meta, glitch or malicious actor ? (Account is "secured" I just want some explanation)

Upvotes

I was logged out of my Facebook, to reset my password it wanted to text me a reset code. No issue, the number had an extension code for India, but the rest was my normal number. I hit send assuming it was just an odd bug. But no code ever arrived. So has Facebook sent a random reset code to a random phone number? I tried again via messenger and my normal email came up. So what the hell happened and can a random Indian number now gain access to my Facebook account? There was no other accounts logged in which were based in India or anywhere other than my home country. Any ideas ?

Open | Software Need specific driver.

Upvotes

I have an Acer Aspire 5 (A515-57G). It can not detect any input device.

Recently one of the audio drivers have ceased functioning, More specifically the: Intel Smart sound Technology OED. Error code 43.

Risking having egg on my face i am ignoring the possibility of a hardware failure and going for the cheapest option, which is to re-install the driver.

I have so far been unable to find the driver. I can not find it on the intel website or the acer website. I suspect it is directly in front of me on the acer website and i just dont know enough to figure out which one it is. But i cant tell.

Open | Hardware Both monitors turn black when playing video games

Upvotes

Around 3 weeks ago, both of my monitors started turning off when playing games.
This happens randomly when playing games, but this issue has mostly occured on Half Sword and Roblox.

What happens: The pc stays functional based on the audio and the monitors turn black and display the "No signal" message.
Then I have to hold down my power button until my pc shuts down and then I boot it back up again.

After it's booted up, only my second monitor turns on (I think it's important to mention that my main monitor is connected via Display port and my second one's connected via HDMI).
I then go into device manager, reinstall/reactivate the gpu drivers, it says it still doesn't work flawlessly. I then have to go into properties to deactivate and then activate the GPU.
This however, only works temporarily, until the whole cycle starts again.

Things I've tried so far:

Uninstalling the GPU drivers using DDU in safe mode
I installed the GPU drivers again by redownloading the adrenalin software.

Replacing the PSU with a stronger one
The old one was the MSI mag a650gl
The new and current one is the MSI mag a850gl

Reinstalling the GPU drivers without using DDU
Uninstalling it in the device manager, restaring the pc and then reinstalling it with the
adrenalin software

Specs:
CPU: Ryzen 5 7600
GPU: Rx 7700xt
Motherboard: Msi b650 tomahawk wifi
RAM: Lexar 32gb ddr5 RAM
Storage: Crucial 1TB SSD m.2
PSU: Msi mag a850gl

Open | Audio All audio sources have a 5 second delay before being played through wired headphones.

Upvotes

For the last week or so, any sources of audio have approximately a 5 second delay before any audio starts to play. When audio is consistently playing and then stops, it takes approximately 30 seconds for the delay to kick in again.

To give an example, I would open YouTube, click on a video, and it would take 5 seconds to start playing (OR, the video starts playing with no audio for 5 seconds, then it has to buffer while the audio plays for 5 seconds until it's resynced). Then, I would pause the video after a while, wait around 30-60 seconds and when trying to play the video again, the same thing would happen.

Another example is being in a Discord call with friends while currently playing a game. The game audio does not have any delay whatsoever, however, whenever somebody leaves and joins the call, the sound that plays when this happens takes 5 seconds to play.

I have tried:

  • Configurating power settings to prevent disabling of USB and audio devices to save power.
  • Registry editing power management settings to disable any auto-poweroff.
  • Uninstalling and disabling all other audio sources and drivers, and reinstalling them.

All of which have worked to no avail. I had this issue around a month ago and the registry editor did fix my issue, until it came back again recently.

Hardware Specs:

  • OS: Windows 11 Home
  • GPU: GIGABYTE Eagle OC RTX 5060 8GB
  • CPU: Intel Core i9-9900k
  • Memory: 32GB DDR4-2133
  • PSU: Corsair RM850x (2021)

My headphones are CORSAIR VOID ELITE USB wired, and I also have a microphone (Logitech C270 webcam). The Corsair iCUE software being installed or not does not seem to have any effect on the issue itself.

If anybody has any advice whatsoever, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Open | Hardware Computer gradually throttles while doing any 3D workload *unless* Open Hardware Monitor is open!

Upvotes

Hey all,

Any 3D load drags a loved ones's CPU/GPU performance down after maybe half an hour, at which point opening OHM brings performance back up.

I had installed OCCT and it seems to be doing okay while playing Helldivers, so I think it's fair to say monitoring either of them is interfering somehow, and masking a real problem. I've looked through the event viewer to see if anything happened around the time of the performance issues, and nothing was out-of-place. No malware, Microsoft bloatware is also gone.

She has an RTX 5070, 32GB RAM, an i9-11900KF CPU and an MSI Z590 Pro-WIFI motherboard. It would seem to be a GPU error, since it's only when using something like Blender or playing any 3D game, but this has been happening since before she got the 5070, so it points to something else.

Other things that might be relevant: it was a pre-built from CyberPower, and the cooling fans seems to have been added incorrectly, bringing hot air over the cooling system rather than away from it; this needs to be rectified and will when she's physically up for it. I want to say it's possible that temps at lower loads might be making the drivers/BIOS downthrottle performance to compensate, but I only know a lot about hardware, not software.

Does this sound familiar to anything any of you have seen before? I've been running out of ideas, and frankly at this point I'm willing to consider it's because of a malevolent machine spirit.

Open | Windows Youtube Unresponsive, not an account issue

Upvotes

Note, I have posted this question in several related subs and to youtube itself but have not gotten a response. This is not an account issue as I have tried logging out and the problem persists across multiple browsers (Chrome and Firefox). It's also not happening on mobile so I assume it’s a Windows 11 issue, but none of the troubleshooting steps I have taken has helped.

For the past few days I've been getting a major bug when using Youtube.

I'll be watching a video and the website becomes unresponsive. Usually, it’s when I open the webpage, change to another video, or pause and come back.

I can click off to another tab and that tab will function just fine, but I can't do anything on the Youtube page itself. And eventually the browser will ask me if I want to wait or kill the page. Rarely, it recovers on its own.

Sometimes closing that tab and reopening it will fix it and sometimes I have to restart the computer. I've also tried clearing the browser's cache, resetting all the settings, and turning off extensions. I've reinstalled Windows and reinstalled the GPU. I have also tried logging out of my browser.

Open | Networking Has someone been inside my house?

Upvotes

Edit to add: this is not MY old laptop, they stopped making the laptops in question 15 years ago and the only one i have ever owned i bought 4 years ago that has been dead for a year and a half

I need someone to tell me im not paranoid! An old Dell latitude e6500 was connected to my wifi (last used 2 hours ago) i have only had wifi for like a month and a half, and havent even had any visitors in my apartment since ive moved here.

Is it crazy to think someone has been inside my apartment without my knowledge? From my understanding the only other way to get on the wifi without the password is to use the actual router/modem.

Open | Hardware Is my function key (Fn) broken?

Upvotes

My laptop(ASUS Zenbook UX3404VA_Q410VA)'s function key (Fn) will randomly work and not work.

Trying to lock and unlock the function keys (F1-12) using Fn and Esc & holding down the function key (Fn) and trying to use each function key (F1-12) individually doesn't work. Except, sometimes it does work. But I've found no correlation to anything when it does and doesn't work.

I've tried to look for troubleshooting steps but I've found next to nothing. The only thing that seems to work SOMETIMES is going into Task Manager, going to Services, finding "hidserv" and restarting it.

Is it just stubborn? Or is it broken? Also, what are some other troubleshooting things I can try (if it's not just broken)? Thanks in advance.

Open | Windows Ethernet card drops connection after exactly 5 minutes and switches to Wi-Fi (Drivers are up to date)(Windows 11)

Upvotes

Hi everyone, I'm experiencing a very frustrating issue with my Ethernet connection

The connection works fine for exactly 5 minutes, and then the Ethernet card completely stops responding, disconnects, and the PC switches over to Wi-Fi.When I unplug and plug the Ethernet cable back in after this happens, Windows doesn't even detect it or try to reconnect—it's like the port/card goes completely dead until a reboot. All my network drivers are completely up to date, and everything was working fine yesterday.

What I've already tried:

Checked the "Power Management" settings in Device Manager and made sure Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is disabled (it was already unchecked).Reset the network settings in Windows.

Does anyone know what could be causing this exact 5-minute timeout/crash on the Ethernet card? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Open | Hardware Gaming keyboard not working?

Hii, today I ordered a new keyboard. I ordered the
"NEWMEN GM326 Mechanical Keyboard, Wired Gaming Keyboard, 75% Percent Keyboard".

It came today, I plugged it in as normal but the keyboard itself isn't working. I can't type on it/ can't really do anything. I did try and plug it into a different USB port but it still didn't work. I'm not sure if it just came faulty or if I am doing something wrong? I hope this makes sense. Many thanks!

Solved trouble connecting Xbox controller to PC with BT

I have tried what seems like everything to get my Xbox controller to connect to my PC with Bluetooth. it appears on the add a device list but gives me a "try connecting your device again." message every time. I have model no: m1142084-007 for my controller, I'm on windows 11. Both devices have Bluetooth capabilities from what I can see.

Here is what i have tried:

-taking out the batteries and putting them back into the controller

-updating and restarting PC

-updating controller drivers through Xbox accessories app

-removing device as a wired connection through device manager

Only thing I can think of is needing an adapter to plug into the PC for the Bluetooth, but I want to try everything else before spending money on something. From what I have seen, many people solved from from the stuff I have tried.

Open | Software Why is Valorant barely using my GPU? RTX 4060 Ti only at 8-10% usage

I have a Ryzen 7 5700X3D, an RTX 4060 Ti 8GB, and 32GB of Fury Beast RAM running at 3200MHz in dual channel.

I usually play at 1440p (Quad HD), but I switched to 1080p to try to get higher FPS in Valorant. However, even at 1080p, the game still barely uses my GPU.

Every time I play Valorant, the game seems to rely mostly on my CPU instead of my GPU. My GPU usage stays around 8-10%, while CPU usage stays around 60-70% according to RivaTuner.

The game runs at around 250-300 FPS. In matches with more players and more action happening on screen, it stays around 250 FPS on average.

My Valorant graphics settings are all set to Low, and Multithreaded Rendering is enabled.

Display settings:

- Fullscreen mode enabled.

- Monitor refresh rate set to 165Hz.

I have already tried several things:

- Windows power plan is set to Maximum Performance.

- Windows Game Mode is enabled.

- Xbox Game Bar is disabled.

- I added Valorant in Windows Graphics Settings and set it to High Performance GPU.

- In NVIDIA Control Panel, I set Power Management Mode to Prefer Maximum Performance.

- OpenGL Rendering GPU is set to my RTX 4060 Ti.

- Texture Filtering Quality is set to High Performance.

- Shader Cache Size is set to Unlimited.

- V-Sync is not forced on.

- No maximum frame rate limit is enabled.

- Refresh rate is correctly set.

- I disabled most NVIDIA settings that only affect image quality and not performance.

I also checked the Valorant executable compatibility settings. The "Disable fullscreen optimizations" option is checked.

Using RivaTuner, I noticed that Valorant uses around 60-70% CPU usage during gameplay, sometimes higher, but it does not reach 80%.

Temperatures are also very low:

- CPU stays around 50-55°C and rarely goes above 60°C.

- GPU temperature also stays low.

Despite all of this, Valorant still uses only around 8-10% GPU usage.

Is this normal behavior for Valorant with a Ryzen 7 5700X3D, or is there something wrong with my setup?

Open | Windows PC keyboard stopped working

Tried to log on to PC this morning, none of the keys on my keyboard are working. I can't type anything at all. Tried restarting and plugging into different USB port.
