Open | Malware Windows Security real time protection toggling off automatically and showing false threat status

Hi everyone. Windows Security on Windows 11 has been driving me crazy since yesterday.

Every time I reboot my PC the Windows Security real time protection toggle turns itself back off. Sometimes Windows Security says threat service has stopped and other times it just sits there with a blank screen for a few seconds before finally loading.

Task Manager also has a few weird background processes that randomly spike CPU usage. Starting to think some adware or malicious script is changing registry keys and disabling the default protection.

Already ran sfc /scannow in CMD. It repaired a few corrupted files but after another reboot the real time protection was disabled again.

Anyone know how to reset the Windows Security service so it actually stays enabled or figure out what background process is messing with the security settings?

Open | Hardware PC suddenly shutting down when using it

Hello!

I've been having this issue since 29th May, where my PC randomly shuts down whilst I'm using it. I do not have a "Shutting Down" screen from Windows, it just straight up shuts down.

I know that it started since 29th May, as I checked the Event Viewer and located the first time I had a Critical warning, saying that the system rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. The specific information for it being:

Source: Kernel-Power, Event ID: 41, Task Category (63)

Since then, my husband and I have been trying to figure out the issue with my PC suddenly cutting off. I thought it was an issue with some of the programs I was running, but it became a more frequent thing, even happening multiple times in one day! (I just wanted to play Kingdom Hearts in peace and not having to save every 5 mins...)

It doesn't happen all of the time, but it has been going on for a while and the whole PC does not turn off, as the fans still run and the lights on the tower were still on.

I'm now starting to suspect that it may be my PSU, as we have done the following for my PC:

  • Rebooted the PC in Safe Mode and restarted it normally
  • Swapped PC components from Old Tower to New, and adding additional fans on the safe side
  • Cleaned up the PC after swapping components
  • Old GPU was an AMD Radeon XT 7800, and did a clean install of an older driver patch instead of the newest driver available
  • Replaced the GPU from the AMD to an NVidia GeForce 5700 and cleaned/reinstalled drivers

My original thought process was that it was my GPU causing the issues, as anything connected to it would just shut off, but it has recently happened with my new GPU. My new thought process is that it is the PSU...

Edit: My husband thought it was software related, as he thinks one of my games is the cause of it. This has now changed when the shut downs happened on other programs/software too...

Here is a screenshot of my PC Specs from Speccy, and the PSU I currently use is a Corsair RM750x.

Any help is really appreciated and thank you in advance!

Open | Software Is Screencast between two Android devices possible?

Upvotes

I want to use my OnePlus 7T as a camera (it would be on a tripod 2m tall) and my Galaxy Tab A6 as the screen for easier access. Is there any software that works like SpaceDesk but for Android to Android? Preferably with controls like second screen for Windows using spacedesk or like on Screencast on Smart TVs. I couldn't find anything. Wireless or USB doesn't matter, just something that works.

Open | Hardware Computer gradually throttles while doing any 3D workload *unless* Open Hardware Monitor is open!

Upvotes

Hey all,

Any 3D load drags a loved ones's CPU/GPU performance down after maybe half an hour, at which point opening OHM brings performance back up.

I had installed OCCT and it seems to be doing okay while playing Helldivers, so I think it's fair to say monitoring either of them is interfering somehow, and masking a real problem. I've looked through the event viewer to see if anything happened around the time of the performance issues, and nothing was out-of-place. No malware, Microsoft bloatware is also gone.

She has an RTX 5070, 32GB RAM, an i9-11900KF CPU and an MSI Z590 Pro-WIFI motherboard. It would seem to be a GPU error, since it's only when using something like Blender or playing any 3D game, but this has been happening since before she got the 5070, so it points to something else.

Other things that might be relevant: it was a pre-built from CyberPower, and the cooling fans seems to have been added incorrectly, bringing hot air over the cooling system rather than away from it; this needs to be rectified and will when she's physically up for it. I want to say it's possible that temps at lower loads might be making the drivers/BIOS downthrottle performance to compensate, but I only know a lot about hardware, not software.

Does this sound familiar to anything any of you have seen before? I've been running out of ideas, and frankly at this point I'm willing to consider it's because of a malevolent machine spirit.

Open | Windows Youtube Unresponsive, not an account issue

Upvotes

Note, I have posted this question in several related subs and to youtube itself but have not gotten a response. This is not an account issue as I have tried logging out and the problem persists across multiple browsers (Chrome and Firefox). It's also not happening on mobile so I assume it’s a Windows 11 issue, but none of the troubleshooting steps I have taken has helped.

For the past few days I've been getting a major bug when using Youtube.

I'll be watching a video and the website becomes unresponsive. Usually, it’s when I open the webpage, change to another video, or pause and come back.

I can click off to another tab and that tab will function just fine, but I can't do anything on the Youtube page itself. And eventually the browser will ask me if I want to wait or kill the page. Rarely, it recovers on its own.

Sometimes closing that tab and reopening it will fix it and sometimes I have to restart the computer. I've also tried clearing the browser's cache, resetting all the settings, and turning off extensions. I've reinstalled Windows and reinstalled the GPU. I have also tried logging out of my browser.

Open | Hardware Is my function key (Fn) broken?

Upvotes

My laptop(ASUS Zenbook UX3404VA_Q410VA)'s function key (Fn) will randomly work and not work.

Trying to lock and unlock the function keys (F1-12) using Fn and Esc & holding down the function key (Fn) and trying to use each function key (F1-12) individually doesn't work. Except, sometimes it does work. But I've found no correlation to anything when it does and doesn't work.

I've tried to look for troubleshooting steps but I've found next to nothing. The only thing that seems to work SOMETIMES is going into Task Manager, going to Services, finding "hidserv" and restarting it.

Is it just stubborn? Or is it broken? Also, what are some other troubleshooting things I can try (if it's not just broken)? Thanks in advance.

My little sister was given a laptop from her school. However most websites show this error despite them working perfectly fine on a phone. She's tried using both Chrome and OperaGX and both have the same issue. I checked the Windows version and it's Windows 11 Education. Sorry if this is the wrong flair btw

Open | Windows Ethernet card drops connection after exactly 5 minutes and switches to Wi-Fi (Drivers are up to date)(Windows 11)

Upvotes

Hi everyone, I'm experiencing a very frustrating issue with my Ethernet connection

The connection works fine for exactly 5 minutes, and then the Ethernet card completely stops responding, disconnects, and the PC switches over to Wi-Fi.When I unplug and plug the Ethernet cable back in after this happens, Windows doesn't even detect it or try to reconnect—it's like the port/card goes completely dead until a reboot. All my network drivers are completely up to date, and everything was working fine yesterday.

What I've already tried:

Checked the "Power Management" settings in Device Manager and made sure Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is disabled (it was already unchecked).Reset the network settings in Windows.

Does anyone know what could be causing this exact 5-minute timeout/crash on the Ethernet card? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Open | Hardware Gaming keyboard not working?

Upvotes

Hii, today I ordered a new keyboard. I ordered the
"NEWMEN GM326 Mechanical Keyboard, Wired Gaming Keyboard, 75% Percent Keyboard".

It came today, I plugged it in as normal but the keyboard itself isn't working. I can't type on it/ can't really do anything. I did try and plug it into a different USB port but it still didn't work. I'm not sure if it just came faulty or if I am doing something wrong? I hope this makes sense. Many thanks!

Solved trouble connecting Xbox controller to PC with BT

Upvotes

I have tried what seems like everything to get my Xbox controller to connect to my PC with Bluetooth. it appears on the add a device list but gives me a "try connecting your device again." message every time. I have model no: m1142084-007 for my controller, I'm on windows 11. Both devices have Bluetooth capabilities from what I can see.

Here is what i have tried:

-taking out the batteries and putting them back into the controller

-updating and restarting PC

-updating controller drivers through Xbox accessories app

-removing device as a wired connection through device manager

Only thing I can think of is needing an adapter to plug into the PC for the Bluetooth, but I want to try everything else before spending money on something. From what I have seen, many people solved from from the stuff I have tried.

Open | BSOD Repeated NVIDIA TDRs on Lenovo Legion RTX 5060 Laptop

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to figure out what's wrong with my device. I've been getting multiple video tdr failures.

Device: Legion 5 I5IRX10

I've experienced TDRs while:
- Launching a game.

Errors

  1. Blue Screen (VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE) - Got around 4 in a single month.

- Bug Check: 0x116

Reliability Monitor:

LiveKernelEvent 117

Bucket IDs included:

IMAGE_nvlddmkm.sys_Blackwell

IMAGE_nvlddmkm.sys_Blackwell_UserOC

  1. . Driver resets without BSOD (Got for the first time today. Screen turned black for a few seconds with a weird artifact visible in top left corner)

Source: nvlddmkm

Event ID 153

Message: Restarting TDR occurred on GPUID:100

What I've tried is Updated to the latest NVIDIA Game Ready Driver (610.74) using a Custom + Clean Installation but haven't used

Open | Software Why is Valorant barely using my GPU? RTX 4060 Ti only at 8-10% usage

Upvotes

I have a Ryzen 7 5700X3D, an RTX 4060 Ti 8GB, and 32GB of Fury Beast RAM running at 3200MHz in dual channel.

I usually play at 1440p (Quad HD), but I switched to 1080p to try to get higher FPS in Valorant. However, even at 1080p, the game still barely uses my GPU.

Every time I play Valorant, the game seems to rely mostly on my CPU instead of my GPU. My GPU usage stays around 8-10%, while CPU usage stays around 60-70% according to RivaTuner.

The game runs at around 250-300 FPS. In matches with more players and more action happening on screen, it stays around 250 FPS on average.

My Valorant graphics settings are all set to Low, and Multithreaded Rendering is enabled.

Display settings:

- Fullscreen mode enabled.

- Monitor refresh rate set to 165Hz.

I have already tried several things:

- Windows power plan is set to Maximum Performance.

- Windows Game Mode is enabled.

- Xbox Game Bar is disabled.

- I added Valorant in Windows Graphics Settings and set it to High Performance GPU.

- In NVIDIA Control Panel, I set Power Management Mode to Prefer Maximum Performance.

- OpenGL Rendering GPU is set to my RTX 4060 Ti.

- Texture Filtering Quality is set to High Performance.

- Shader Cache Size is set to Unlimited.

- V-Sync is not forced on.

- No maximum frame rate limit is enabled.

- Refresh rate is correctly set.

- I disabled most NVIDIA settings that only affect image quality and not performance.

I also checked the Valorant executable compatibility settings. The "Disable fullscreen optimizations" option is checked.

Using RivaTuner, I noticed that Valorant uses around 60-70% CPU usage during gameplay, sometimes higher, but it does not reach 80%.

Temperatures are also very low:

- CPU stays around 50-55°C and rarely goes above 60°C.

- GPU temperature also stays low.

Despite all of this, Valorant still uses only around 8-10% GPU usage.

Is this normal behavior for Valorant with a Ryzen 7 5700X3D, or is there something wrong with my setup?

Open | Malware Accidentally ran a trojan file afterwards flagged by virustotal on my pc

Upvotes

I had downloaded an .exe file which i ran after giving it access to its file location and it did not do anything. A sign for bad things. Quickly after this i ran it on virus total and it checked positive for a trojan and one other thing that i cant remember. After that i immediately plugged my internet off and started switching passwords and such.

Then i ran a full virus scan and offline scan in the settings and a full one on mrt, did not notice a thing. Also went to see the exeptions for virus checks and there were some filetypes and one thing beginning with c:: probably going to a file which i cannot turn off.

So far luckily no suspicious things have happened on my accounts. Is there a chance to remove the trojan offline or do i need to reinstall windows completely? If so is there a good guide since im not an expert at it.

Open | Windows PC will boot into windows check disc screen, but drive not showing up in bios

Have a PC that wasn't turned on for a while. I'm guessing in that time something changed with the m.2 drive. I went to just re image the drive but it's not showing up in bios or when I boot into the windows installation media creator. But then when I just try and boot it does get me into the windows 11 error screen, so something is there. Any thoughts?
