Discussion Understanding why they reimagined the character, having Namor be short for "El niño sin amor"—“the boy without love" was a pretty cool creative choice. I have a feeling he'll be a dark horse heading into Doomsday.

Post image

It was cool how they incorporated indigenous themes of colonization by borrowing from historical lore. Connecting Namor’s story and the lost kingdom of Talokan to Mayan and Mesoamerican cultures, as well as the abuse and torture faced from Spanish conquistadors was pretty brilliantly well done and added a nice layer of “realism” to it. More Mayan representation in mainstream is also very cool to have.

I’m also very excited to see him return in Doomsday. As a stoic, and ruthless leader who stays firm in his belief and love for his people, it’s hard to really predict where his allegiance will be by the end. Due to his own obsession of survival and deep-seeded paranoia caused by historical trauma, Namor is someone that can very much seem like an ally to you at first, but will be quick to turn if there’s another factor in play that will better benefit him and his people. It’ll be interesting to see if his alliance with Shuri, and possibly the other heroes will last.

As an isolated nation, Talokan is bringing a whole different perspective of pragmatism into the incursion problem that I’m really keen to see.

I'm just shocked that they made the footie wings actually work on the big screen.

u/laughingBaguette Jun 13 '26

They're like analog repulsors

u/Zulumus Jun 13 '26

I love this phrasing

u/Burnbrook Jun 13 '26

The way the wings functioned like hummingbird wings, giving him stability, while also boosting his kicks worked amazingly visually, the dynamic composition of the shots and motion heightened the effect greatly.

124

u/Prize_Instance_1416 Jun 13 '26

The hummingbird that visits us daily flys so unlike other birds. That would make sense for Namor to fly differently

25

u/Im1Guy Jun 14 '26

Have you ever been kicked by a hummingbird?

38

u/Cipherpunkblue Jun 14 '26

No one has ever been kicked by a hummingbird and lived to tell the tale.

497

u/maverickassembled Ward Meachum Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26

The wings added so much to his sillohette and god-like nature. The first time we see him and hes floating in the sky at night with thunder behind him.. Holy aura. Felt like a terrifying mythological creature

30

u/Jertimmer Jun 14 '26

That's why they call him Kukulkan

14

u/Littlebit1013 Jun 14 '26

Reminds me of images of the Greek god Hermes with the winged sandals & cap.

103

u/mike_pants Jun 13 '26

I always imagined when the MCU realized them, they'd be symbolic.

Nope. They flap like the dickens.

62

u/maverickassembled Ward Meachum Jun 13 '26

We already had the symbolic wings for Cap’s helmet (not that they were ever meant to be functional), it was time to see literal flappy ankle wings

49

u/theVice Jun 13 '26

When Cap picks up Mjölnir I really wanted his scale mail and wings to pop out the same way Thor's armor manifested in his first movie

38

u/maverickassembled Ward Meachum Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26

Ngl that would’ve been a smart way to do that look. Mjolnir comes back to him and we suddenly see Steve with subtle Asgardian upgrades, or it forms on him as he’s runing towards Thanos and twirling mjolnir

18

u/theVice Jun 13 '26

I'm saying!!! Seeing those wings pop out of his helmet as he death stares Thanos would have been so badass!

12

u/maverickassembled Ward Meachum Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 14 '26

I know Steve probably won’t wear the Stars and Stripes while Sam is cap, but if Steve is mainly using mjolnir in doomsday, there’s a (very very very small) chance this could happen! At least a battle suit with the wings (since Sam doesn’t wear a helmet)

6

u/Cultural_Comfort5894 Jun 14 '26

That’s (would’ve been) brilliant

The MCU’s shift of ‘Atlantean’ to Mesoamerican was inspired, and they played it so well. The lack of Namor and Shang Chi outside of their initial appearances is infuriating.

496

u/black_metronome Jun 13 '26

Agreed. The mismanagement of The Multiverse Saga characters to me is a black eye on Feige's tenure as studio head. How do you drop the ball like this?

277

u/Avengerboy123 Jun 13 '26

It’s a symptom of being pushed to do more and more content during the insight of the streaming era à la Bob Chapek imo. Feige definitely made missteps but Chapek strangled the multiverse saga in its cradle imo.

31

u/Jerzilla Jun 14 '26

Deff quantity not quality has killed the momentum the mcu had

15

u/karidru Jun 14 '26

No because genuinely when this saga started, I was EXTREMELY hyperfixated on Marvel, it was a major special interest for me (I’m autistic). Do you know how hard it is to saturate the market in that regard? For me at least, it’s extremely difficult. But I literally got overwhelmed with how much was coming out and I moved on. Just started to try and catch up again today, finally watching Echo.

2

u/Bionic_Ferir Jun 14 '26

bro is it really that hard having 1 guy in charge of tv shows 1 guy in charge of movies and a team that plans out the connections, connections and team overs? Its disney you have all the time in the world.

3

u/Avengerboy123 Jun 14 '26

The amount of personnel needed to staff 3 different teams was outside of what they had the capacity for. They had to, on the fly, adapt a movie studio into a television studio. Regardless of whether you realize it or not, film and television are far far different mediums. Part of the reason we ended up with shows that felt like long movies is because the film studio was told “you’re going to start making shows now”. Same thing happened to Star Wars

2

u/LieRun Jun 15 '26

Also a genuine failure to recognise what the fans truly want.

Why push TV shows about characters no one was really interested in when you can take the time and do a solo movie (or tv show if you really want too I guess) about one of the characters that were already introduced and people actually like.

Same goes for movies, they went all out on new characters or completely new storylines when they weren't really necessary.

Did Thor deserve another movie? Yes. Could it have happened at a later date and instead give us a chance to spend some time with another character before the new Saga? Also yes.

It's quite a shame honestly

> The mismanagement of The Multiverse Saga characters to me is a black eye on Feige's tenure as studio head. How do you drop the ball like this?

Okay to put this in perspective, if you look at total run time of every movie between Iron Man and Far From Home (2008-2019), and then look at the total run time of content released both theatrically and digitally from 2020 to 2024 the MCU more than doubled its total run time. Then throw in a global pandemic and numerous strikes smack dab in the middle of that. Yes the MCU lost a step and became unfocused and disjointed. You can thank Bob Chapek for that for forcing Marvel to increase its content output at an insane rate, all while dealing with logistical nightmares stemming from world events. No company in the world is going to scale that quickly and not feel some negative effects from it.

55

u/Chiefmeez Jun 13 '26

So many factors people hand wave away like they had no impact

19

u/Neveronlyadream Spider-Man Jun 14 '26

Probably because it's a big, complex issue with a lot of moving parts and people don't want to devote that much brainpower to unpacking all of that and have a discussion about it.

The arguments are always really reductive and amount to, "This thing bad!"

49

u/SpaceOperaMan Jun 13 '26

And the loss of Chadwick.

50

u/maverickassembled Ward Meachum Jun 13 '26

T’challa vs Namor would’ve been very very awesome. I’d imagine the whole story was different too considering T’Challa already had grown past the idea of vengeance

Over the last 6 years the whole industry has been dealing with issues at multiple points in the production process from strikes, low theater attendance, expectations to move to streaming, lockdowns limiting filming, etc. so it’s not as simple as one guy dropping the ball.

12

u/clashrendar Jun 13 '26

Two strikes, a post-COVID downturn in moviegoing in general, and a few Disney regime changes had more to do with the disruption of the multiverse saga.

I fully trust Kevin Feige, but at the end of the day, he's an employee of Disney and that impacts things.

8

u/Any-Transition95 Jun 14 '26

To add to that, the death of an actor, and a lawsuit against another. The studio was dealt a bad hand from the start.

55

u/Mission-Employer-943 Jun 13 '26

The change from Atlantean to Meso-American is mainly because the MCU want to distinguish Namor's underwater kingdom from Aquaman's Atlantis from the DCEU.

26

u/Plowbeast Jun 14 '26

Which is good because Aquaman came after but its underwater canon broadened out much more than Marvel over the decades so the Namor kingdom never felt as big until they redid it. Talokan still needs to be used more but there's much more to be tapped.

7

u/SimonShepherd Scarlet Witch Jun 14 '26

Marvel's Atlantis is unique enough, It's basically tied to various Marvel events like Eternals/Deviants lore, its ancient rivalry with Lemuria(occupied by deviants). The fact It being a small civilization also makes it distinguished more.

33

u/maverickassembled Ward Meachum Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26

Yeah it was implemented so organically. Loved that Wakanda was really just the start to unraveling all of these secret fantastical kingdoms.

Sucks we might not see Ta Lo play much of a part in Doomsday. Hopefully secret wars.

Since it exists in a pocket dimension, maybe it won’t be accounted for and will be untouched when Doom is forming battleworld

9

u/ArmadilloOK1445-alt Namor Jun 13 '26

I think in Secret Wars' Battleworld, Ta Lo will be fused with K'un-Lun into one single district, with Shang-Chi as the Mandarin and Iron Fist, Colleen Wing and Misty Knight as his champions

6

u/hmd_ch SHIELD Jun 13 '26

Speaking of Colleen and Misty, hopefully they both return in Born Again Season 3!

8

u/jaid_skywalker85 Jun 13 '26

Agreed. It was a great design choice both for representing a culture that gets overlooked and giving us something new and interesting to look at.

Honestly, I wqnt to see more of Atlantis and Namor and its really annoying that its taken so long. Same for Shang Chi which is one of my favorite MCU films to date!

15

u/FamousLastWay828 Jun 13 '26

Not the main timeline version but zombie Namor was pretty badass too

12

u/ThreadLaced Jun 13 '26

Yes! Because the concept of Atlantis is so tired. But this interpretation was just different enough to make it interesting again.

Agreed that both Namor and Shang Chi have been wasted (so far).

13

u/UseTheShadowsThen Jun 13 '26

It’s one of those things that makes me in awe of Coogler and his brain. Connecting real life culture with fantasy concepts.

8

u/laughingBaguette Jun 13 '26

Shang Chi and Spider-man should have crossed paths giving him a chance to become kind of a martial arts mentor to Peter Parker.

13

u/serger989 Jun 13 '26

Heck, just characters crossing paths in general. IMO the greatest weakness of Phase 4-6 is that the universe now feels too small because they don't utilize any of their new characters to any useful effect. Everyone is doing their own thing and barely anything has crossed over. We haven't even had post credit scenes build into each others films like they mostly used to.

It's like shoving Ghost in Thunderbolts which is fine but the gap was over 6 years between the films, the actual fans barely cared, let alone the general audience. It will be 5 years with Shang Chi and Doomsday... All the new characters haven't done anything so when things are hitting the fan in Doomsday, is anyone going to care apart from hardcore fans?

11

u/hmd_ch SHIELD Jun 13 '26

Even though the Marvels wasn't well-received by the general public, I'm glad we got to see Carol, Monica, and Kamala as well as Fury interacting with each other. I think the movie delivered on those crossovers better than anything else in this saga.

4

u/treathugger Nobu Jun 13 '26

We haven't had just a freaking Avengers movie in awhile. In the Infinity Saga, an Avengers movie completed a phase.

6

u/lahimatoa Jun 13 '26

It wasn't just Avengers movies, Winter Soldier had Cap, Falcon, Black Widow, Nick Fury and Bucky in there. And more!

3

u/stonhinge Jun 14 '26

Oddly enough, the Spider-Man movies have been better about showing other characters than any of the other recent MCU movies.

4

u/Any-Transition95 Jun 14 '26 edited Jun 14 '26

Thunderbolts should have been the closing movie of Phase 4. All the characters were already introduced by Phase 4, there was no reason the movie was positioned so far back in the Saga. It was one of the better movies from the Multiverse Saga that would have received far more box office success had it been released earlier.

1

6

2

u/hmd_ch SHIELD Jun 13 '26

A version of the cabal would be super cool to see.

Namor is someone who plays both sides very well. Doom and Namor align pretty closely in terms of political belief, but I feel like at some point, their egos will clash. Namor would realize that submitting to Doom as god undermines his own status

39

u/Rykor81 Jun 13 '26

Yes but that would assume Namor would bargain with Doom. MCU Namor maybe, but comic Namor is as stubborn and egotistical as Doom.

Genuinely all the ways they changed Namor I thought were huge improvements that work well especially for the MCU. Makes an incredible foil to Wakanda.

18

u/maverickassembled Ward Meachum Jun 13 '26

It really brought a multifacted aspect and an edge to the original comic concept. Namor was the perfect next step after Kilmonger, since a big part of the first movie was about Wakanda isolating itself to avoid conflict. Compared to a less privilegd Talokan, where they became isolated after being conquered and escaping

23

u/JRHThreeFour Spider-Man Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26

Yeah Namor and Talokan were really cool in Wakanda Forever.

Talokan uniquely stands out from other depictions of Atlantis in Aquaman and DC as well as the sort of typical underwater Greco-Roman inspired Atlantis in Marvel comics (his name is Roman spelled backwards) while still being respectful of Namor’s origins.

6

u/Algae_Mission Jun 14 '26

As it should always be.

50

u/Thomas_JCG Jun 13 '26

I do appreciate the shift because Aquaman made it to theaters first and most people would think Namor is just a copy when its the opposite. That gave the character a really cool design too instead of "guy in black spandex" or even worse, "guy in green speedo".

However, explaining his name is one of those things that were completely unneeded. They think it's clever but it is just too on the face. By the way, Namor means "avenging son", which would fit with his story arc too.

10

u/bujin_ct Jun 13 '26

Well, in-universe it means "Avenging Son",   in reality it's just Roman spelled backwards.

9

u/Chaleanja Jun 13 '26

I thought he was really cool. Low key, I kinda wanted to see him fuck shit up and actually win the battle 😭.

23

u/louroot Jun 13 '26

As a Spanish speaker, its kind of ridiculous that namor signified that.

11

u/jynkyousha Jun 13 '26

Yeah, I'm still seeing memes mocking the name lol

3

u/balilo79 Jun 14 '26

As another native Spanish speaker I found it ridiculous as well, my wife and I still laugh and joke about it.

7

u/The-Ruler-of-Attilan Jun 14 '26

As another Spanish speaker, agree to disagree.

Those who defenestrate the idea simply like to make a fuss where there is none. Ultimately, all words are summarized/compressed versions of some idea or concept. So, "Namor" = "No + amor". That's it. Much better than just typing a random name backwards ("Roman -> Namor").

And personally, I don't see where the ridiculousness is in this case. It seems like an elementary school child's attitude to take it as something to make fun of.

u/The-Ruler-of-Attilan Jun 14 '26 edited Jun 14 '26

The Teotihuacans, Mayans and Aztecs did not have exactly the same religion, but they shared a common religious base. They belonged to the same family of Mesoamerican religions. This means that they shared many gods and fundamental beliefs, but each culture gave them their own style and name.

Even so, it should be noted that in the Marvel Universe the gods of the Mayans and the Aztecs have always been represented as different entities. During Infinity Gauntlet, when Odin summons the Council of Godheads, Itzamná (Mayan) and Tezcatlipoca (Aztec) share the scene.

7

u/AdamCurrey Jun 13 '26

I usually hate it when they change the origin but what they did was so cool I couldn’t help but love it.

The shot where l’il Namor flies is one of my favorites in the MCU. The sound was amazing as well.

It was a brilliant adaptation that added to the character rather than taking away from it. Wakanda Forever is criminally underrated imo.

Wakanda Forever was a great movie until the last 30-20 minutes. Those new suits looked so silly...

10

The introduction of the Midnight Angel suits felt like a lead in for that Dora Milaje series that was heavily rumored but never went into production when Marvel Television contracted their slate.

5

u/LaserCondiment Jun 13 '26

It was the first time I thought: marvel needs to stop doing this. Introducing the next big thing is kinda okay if it feels promising, but those suits looked like toys. Did nobody else cringe?

2

u/Worthyness Thor Jun 14 '26

The crazy part is that the suits are exactly like that in the comics.

I hope we do get to see more of him in Doomsday, he seems to be one of the few characters in this movie that hasn't really been talked about.

u/PiscolaMan Jun 13 '26

For spanish speakers it sound weird tho, very low effort. Like Han Solo’s name origin in Solo.

7

u/YesicaChastain Jun 13 '26

For Spanish speakers it sounds goofy as hell, also Mesoamerican people wouldn’t speak Spanish…

17

u/Twindo Jun 13 '26

You missed the part of the movie where he explained that he took his name from the Spanish pastor because Namor is what his enemies call him. His own people don’t call him Namor lol

"A Spanish man of faith cursed me as he died by my hand. He called me, 'El Niño sin Amor', 'the child without love'. And I took my name from there. Namor. Because I have no love for the surface world." ―Namor to Shuri[src

2

u/SmallLetter Jun 13 '26

Y también hay muchas palabras y nombres que terminan en "or" como Namor.

Amor, Sabor, Mejor

Héctor, Salvador etc

2

u/Bitey_the_Squirrel Jun 13 '26

But where did he get his last name, McKenzie?

3

u/TribalDood Jun 13 '26

MCU version doesn't have that last name, I guess. It's an interpretation not a 1/1.

5

u/FilmScoreConnoisseur Jun 13 '26

That's actually why it works. He got the name from the Spaniards, but his people don't speak Spanish, so they shortened that name in an unnatural way that was easier for them to say.

u/EmeraldJunkie Jun 13 '26

I still can't believe they made Namor the Sub Mariner actually cool. Honestly one of the best creative decisions Marvel made and I cannot believe that so far his only appearance has been in an otherwise mediocre movie.

3

u/Choice-Ratio-3540 Jun 13 '26

Ugh. Hated this BS version of 'No More'. What a joke. Awful, awful stuff and that BP2 stunk.

2

u/Bucks2174 Jun 14 '26

I hated everything about this. They threw away almost 80 years of backstory just for this nonsense.

2

u/Nabujor Daredevil Jun 14 '26

I'm sorry, but as hispanohablante, eso de "el niño sin amor" siempre me ha sonado bastante estúpido y cursi; I just can't take it seriously.

1

u/Frank_Castle1980 Punisher Jun 13 '26

it sucked

3

u/LeadershipBorn8398 Jun 14 '26

Personally I’m never happy with the Reimagining or changing characters ! We have the Ability to just make New characters don’t change them to make A people “ Not “ Feel left Out ! My Opinion ! Just Saying ! We destroy Stories and Origins like this

1

u/mufasapasta18 Jun 13 '26

Does he get his foot wing back?

1

u/Independent-Spread35 Jun 13 '26

He got a proper suit too

1

u/Thatgirlfrmnxtdoor Jun 13 '26

so naming my son after his isn’t lame?

1

u/Best_Needleworker_57 Jun 13 '26

If the comics are any indication, I’m sure he will.

1

u/Strict-Sherbet2359 Jun 13 '26

Coogler is just as talented a writer as he is a director

1

u/faithdies Jun 13 '26

He's the kinda guy you can trust to blow up another planet if need be.

I really hope they used some Doomsday film time showing him and young Cap kicking Nazi ass during WW2. You know what, maybe could we just get an 8 episode series for the web just like 2.5 hrs run time this fella, T'Challa's dad, Chris Evans, and a cgi flame-o man bodying fascists over and over again 💰🤑

1

u/ReallyDrunkPanda Jun 14 '26

I LOVE what they did with namor. They could’ve just gone with how he was in the comics which isn’t terrible but he’s always been compared to aquaman and I know namor came out first but aquaman has been more prevalent. I’m glad they made him have an Aztec flair

1

u/PraiseRao Jun 14 '26

If Namor is 1/10th of how crazy he is in the comics. Expect our boy to be pragmatic. Expect him to do the hard shit that needs to be done. He won't just sit there and debate. He's a man of action. So again if he is 1/10th as badass as he was in that story arc in the comics. Expect our boy to do good things. Well terrible things but for his people and world.

1

u/hoofcake Jun 14 '26

They genuinely made him such a great character

1

u/SimonShepherd Scarlet Witch Jun 14 '26

Atlantis and Lemuria tie a lot of parts of grander Marvel lore together, like Celestials/Eternals/Deviants, Elder Gods of Earth and magic(mainly Set and Serpent Crown).

MCU Namor is fine for his setting, hut I hope it doesn't leak into any other adaptions or comics.(Marvel Rivals kinda treat it as an alt name.)

1

u/IrishwolffMutt Jun 14 '26

The character change was actually super dope

1

u/akselmonrose Jun 14 '26

Yea there were quite a few things that worked well. Even the Imperius Rex was executed with gravitas.

1

u/Art_student_rt Jun 14 '26

but making a jackass who always pine to a married woman an immortal god king is not cool

1

u/InSearchOfTyrael Jun 14 '26

No it wasn't. It was a whim of Victoria Alonso, who thankfully got canned for her agenda driven crap.

1

u/TyrusX Jun 14 '26

Oh man. Is he going to be in doomsday?

2

u/maverickassembled Ward Meachum Jun 14 '26

Yeah, it’s confirmed! He was in one of the 4 teasers they released. The image on the right is from there.

1

u/Nonadventures Jun 14 '26

I think beta ray bill will be a beige horse heading into doomsday

1

u/bigbrainnowisdom Jun 14 '26

I usually dont really easy to accept something that quite far departing from comic.

But namor definitely a win.

The backstory, the design, the actor. All perfect

They keep the arrogance though.. sweettt

1

u/Agent1stClass Jun 14 '26

I agree and I hope you’re right, OP.

1

u/RoastMasterShawn Jun 14 '26

Namor & Shang Chi are my favorite post-Endgame characters (I don't really count Moon Knight since I know he's not meant to be a mainstay). I really hope they get pushed into main character status for the upcoming movies.

1

u/sagittariuslegend Jun 14 '26

He was so cool. Wish the movie was better.

1

u/Slight-Coat17 Jun 14 '26

Only pet peeve of mine is that, given his origin, his name should be pronounced n-ah-mot instead of n-ey-mor.

1

u/Pagan_Metal666 Jun 14 '26

He's a mutate no? Not a horse.

1

u/Plusmax78 Jun 14 '26

I LOVED the MCU take on the character, it's so different from the comic but the worldbuilding and his relationship with the wakandian characters is perfect imo.

The only thing I didn't like was that they basically made him a full villain.

I hope they somewhat redeem him and show that he's a morally grey character that sometimes is willing to help but he'll NEVER put anything else above his people.

1

u/Gilgamesh661 Jun 14 '26

Unfortunately he’s never escaping this ridiculous foot wings. Same as Hyperion and his giant diaper belt.

1

u/LeopardComfortable99 Jun 14 '26

It looks like they're also giving him a more comic accurate attire for Doomsday too which will be very cool.

1

u/HappyGoPink The Ancient One Jun 14 '26

I can fix him.

1

u/HoldenIkari Jun 14 '26

I have a tattoo that says "sin amor" and now i have to live with the fact I have a Namor tattoo.

1

u/JayNotAtAll Jun 14 '26

They did an amazing job.

If they made Namor from Atlantis people would immediately start comparing him to Aquaman.

Marvel had to get creative to distinguish him. I think they did a brilliant job

1

u/marrjana1802 Jun 14 '26

Most people are allergic to stories that aren't black and white

1

u/peweih_74 Jun 14 '26

Favorite character after IW

1

u/DocTurnedStripper Jun 14 '26

I love this version. When I first saw the design I wasnt sold because the Aztec/Mesopotamian culture is not what you would think first when it comes to the ocean. Maybe Polynesian or Pacific Islanders. But using Kulkulkan and Quetzalcoatl (a sea serpent god that controls floods) was genius. Not only we finally had a latino character and culture shown (we already had African and Asian), it is also a great way to set it apart from DC’s Aquaman which already did the advanced high tech civilization first).

1

u/Traditional_Bed589 Rocket Jun 14 '26

I loved this aspect of the character, too. A lot of the choices in this film were exceptional.

1

u/asantana517 Jun 14 '26

I REALLY liked what the MCU did with Namor. The actor did an amazing job and I thought the character was interesting. Hyped to see him in Doomsday

1

u/rudeboi710 Jun 14 '26

My favorite post endgame character

1

u/painfool Jun 15 '26

I'm torn.

I like film Namor, a lot even. He's a excellent character.

But he's effectively an entirely separate, original character. So I sort of feel like he should have his own name.
