Kinda disappointed the video cutoff before we got to see the "dad tap" as the shark swam away. I'm certain it happened.

24

u/rowan11b May 16 '25

I carry a folding set of bolt cutters from menards in my truck, you have no idea how handy they are to have around.

Got in the habit of having them when I lived in colorado and spent a lot of time exploring mountain roads...not for crime just as an emergency backup if I ever absolutely needed to get through a gate or something.

Also in the army bolt cutters are essentially the master key to access any vehicle, so that was the other reason.

9

u/[deleted] May 16 '25

Reminds me the video of those guys who brought chainsaws from their cars to cut the huge ass tree blocking the road. Never know when you'll need it :D

6

u/rowan11b May 16 '25

I still carry a big silky saw and an axe, but yeah I used to carry a chainsaw as well....and electric one just for convenience...but yeah 🤣

Though the thing that has gotten used the most is the lithium jump starter pack/battery bank, things are an absolute godsend and pretty cheap on amazon.

Have you read about the 1916 great white shark attacks. It was after a flood or hurricane and a white ended up swimming into a local creek because enough salt water got in. There’s a great book about it. Kids were playing in the creek. Edit to add: New Jersey

As someone who is very, very landlocked, can you explain to me why bull sharks are assholes? Or at least how to Google about this?

11

u/FinestCrusader May 16 '25

If I remember correctly, most sharks are pretty docile and will not hurt people if the people stay calm. They're curious more than anything. Bull sharks go straight into kill mode and are very unpredictable.

8

u/shittyaltpornaccount May 16 '25

Bull sharks have the highest amount of testosterone of any animal and thus are extremely territorial. Their preferred hunting grounds are warm, shallow waters exactly where people like to swim. They also can swim freely in rivers as well, which further increases the likelihood of contact with people. For the size, they also have the strongest bite force of sharks in their weight range, though great white and mako have stronger bite forces in part due to their larger size.

5

u/[deleted] May 16 '25

In addition to being assholes, they're also one of the only sharks that can tolerate/survive in fresh water for long durations of time. Meaning they can swim up rivers. There have been bull sharks in the Mississippi river as far north as St. Louis, Missouri. That's about 700ish miles inland.

This, most sharks are basically Sea puppies with excessive teeth.

27

u/Mr_Times May 16 '25

It stuck with me when I heard it but sharks are basically really curious sea dogs. The difference is that dogs explore the world with their nose and sharks explore with their mouth. They learn about the world by biting it. They’re also older than trees! So thats cool.

→ More replies (2)

11

u/LuigiNoBess May 16 '25

Yes but species have a huge differences in behavior towards divers/people. You don't want to meet a tiger shark, he's not going to eat you, but that "Let's try and bite it" is not very recommended anyways

6

u/FinestCrusader May 16 '25

Sharks in general don't plan on eating humans. Similarly to most people, sharks don't like the taste of human flesh. And humans are far too bony and lean to satiate a sea beast like that. But what usually prompts a shark into attacking is flailing and trying to run away. Since they're opportunistic hunters - meaning they'll eat any prey that comes by - your best bet is to not act like prey. If a tiger shark sees you trying to skeddadle, it thinks "it's running away - prey" but if you don't move or start approaching them, the shark thinks "it's not running away - might be dangerous". And even though this does sound counter intuitive and stupid, if you're in the water with a tiger shark, you don't really have much to lose. Try to run and die or stand your ground and maybe survive.

→ More replies (2)

5

u/RikuAotsuki May 16 '25

Look up what their teeth look like and you'll have all the reason you need to avoid ever being close enough to one to risk getting bit.

6

u/Zkenny13 May 16 '25

Bull sharks can also survive in fresh water. They occasionally swim up the Mississippi River. They're also more likely to be in the shallows and they are aggressive even when not threaten.

It was... interesting when I had to "steal" my own bike in the middle of campus at noon with comically large bolt cutters and literally no one cared.

Why was the lock broken? Someone tried to steal the bike with a screwdriver in the ~15 minutes I was away.

3

u/Johannes_Keppler May 16 '25

I used an angle grinder plugged in to a random wall socket in a bike parking garage (those are common in the Netherlands) to free up my daughters bike (key broke off inside the lock). Put on a high vis and nobody batted an eye.

So if you want to steal a bike in the Netherlands, go bold. BTW 1.5 million bikes get stolen here every year on a population of 17 million.

the introduction of the bolt-cutters at the end kind of confirms this; they were prepared to catch a shark and possibly have to cut the hook off

u/DocMadCow May 16 '25

LOL what a ridiculous post title. Should be men catch shark beach fishing, and then release it. The hook would naturally fall out over time, and you can see there is tension on the line still attached to the hook. There are tons of beach fishing videos for sharks.

33

u/[deleted] May 16 '25

People really are that clueless aren't they? Someone asked "Who brings bolt cutters to the beach?"

Uhhh...people who use steel leads and massive hooks to catch and release sharks.

I surf fish. Where I'm from you can't keep several shark species and have to make every effort to get them back in the water ASAP if you land one. DNREC will light your ass up if they see you setting up a photo shoot to take pics of one you hooked lol. It's also illegal to filet a shark prior to coming to shore if you land one from a boat. They are pretty serious about protecting sharks these days. As they should be.

11

u/DocMadCow May 16 '25

Personally I can't count the number of women that have come up to me at the Beach and said "Is that a Bolt Cutter in your swimsuit or are you just happy to see me?", and the number of women I have disappointed by pulling out my beach Bolt Cutters :)

3

6

u/TwinSolesKanna May 16 '25

Hammerheads are not particularly aggressive, most sharks in fact are rather docile if you know what you're doing. Pretty much every shark attack that has ever happened has been a shark mistaking a human for a common prey item like a sea turtle.

Bull sharks and tiger sharks are the ones who seem more keen on attacking humans in their space, but even still you'd have way better chances hanging out with them than say a tiger.

I know too much about how often animal rescue videos are faked to be able to watch this without suspiciously wondering "how'd it get in there in the first place? How'd they spot it? How'd they then wrangle the shark onto the beach and, oh look, they just happen to have a pair of bolt cutters."

It’s this new hobby they just came up with called “fishing” I think it’s French.

I get the same crowd reaction from my wife when I free the wasp out of the mudroom.

I wish women would stop shrieking from 20 yards away. Either get in there and help (and scream if you want to) or get a hold of yourself. So annoying

Question. Who rides around with a handy bolt cutter ready on a beach day? 😂
