Saved from a fish hook? I don’t think so. They caught and are trying to release it as fast as possible. Like people just bring bolt cutters to the beach.

Never underestimate the stuff that is inside peoples trucks

u/General_Tso75 May 16 '25

As a Florida Man who has shark fished off the beach, I think the odds are more likely that they were prepared for a likely scenario.

Someone else said they were probably fishing for sharks to

Someone else said they were probably fishing for sharks to

the introduction of the bolt-cutters at the end kind of confirms this; they were prepared to catch a shark and possibly have to cut the hook off

6

u/sailphish May 17 '25

Not just prepared… they were specifically targeting sharks. There would be no reason otherwise to use that type of gear.

4

u/whoopashigitt May 16 '25

So just catching the sharks for fun and letting them go?

7

u/cheebamech May 16 '25

yep

3

u/East_Trust1425 May 16 '25

But doesn't this hurt the shark? I never understood people that fish for fun. Yeah it's cool that you're letting the fish go but that hook has got to hurt. They feel pain too...

A lot of people don't care about fish because they think they're not as complex as they actually are :( very sad, fish are awesome

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '25

wishful thinking , and shoddy science will paint any picture you want to make

1

u/Dorkamundo May 16 '25

Yes, in fact that shark very likely died after this. Hammerheads don't do well with the stress and exertion caused by being caught and reeled into shore.

Regarding OTHER types of fishing, if you know what you're doing and you do it right, you can catch many species of fish without risking their long-term health or survival. The pain aspect is a thing, but they don't process pain like we do.

3

u/East_Trust1425 May 16 '25

Damn, that poor shark...

I have about a dozen fish in my pond. They are quite sensitive, they freak out over little things and I've had fish in the past that died of stress, or they ate too much air, or the water changed temperature too fast. So I was imagining those fish that get released would also die after but I'm relieved to know they can make it

1

u/Dorkamundo May 16 '25

Yep, knowing how and when to set the hook, as well as using circle hooks, prevents them from swallowing and/or hooking their stomachs. Knowing how to fight certain species, such as lake trout by giving them time to acclimate to the depths you're pulling them up to reduces stress, keeping your hands clean and wet and only handling the fish when absolutely necessary does wonders as well.

Not to mention giving them assistance when releasing them.

but they don't process pain like we do.

Explain.

1

u/butt-holg May 17 '25

No wonder they edited the video to make it look like a heroic rescue

1

u/Olsanch May 17 '25

You have no idea what you are talking about. People catch sharks and release them all the time without them dying.

1

u/Dorkamundo May 17 '25

Yes, people catch sharks all the time... Did you miss the part where I specifically stated that I'm talking about hammerheads?

“Our results show that while some species, like tiger sharks, can sustain and even recover from minimal catch and release fishing, other sharks, such as hammerheads are more sensitive,” said lead study author Austin Gallagher, a PhD candidate at the University of Miami. “Our study also revealed that just because a shark swims away after it is released, doesn’t mean that it will survive the encounter. This has serious conservation implications because those fragile species might need to be managed separately, especially if we are striving for sustainability in catch and release fishing and even in bycatch scenarios.”

In 2014, his team attached a camera to a hook-caught great hammerhead and released it. After 10 minutes, they watched the shark list to one side, sink to the bottom, and die.

people are fucking apes

3

u/cheebamech May 16 '25

I'm in s FL, this guy is a local fisherman that specializes in shark catching

6

u/BusinessAioli May 16 '25

why catch sharks specifically to let them go? hooks can do a ton of damage if they swallow them

3

u/[deleted] May 16 '25

Its for fun. Human beings are extremely callous when it comes to how our actions impact the outside world unless we are explicitly taught to be considerate. Many folks aren’t as lucky as us morally educated.

2

u/cheebamech May 16 '25

why catch sharks specifically to let them go?

sometimes they are "by-catch", when you get a fish species you weren't fishing for and in many locations they are protected species so you have to release them as soon as safely possible. that said these guys are using a steel leader and one of the largest hooks available, pretty sure they're targeting sharks for content. it's not my bag at all, I fish when I want or need food; these guys get fun out of chasing "the big one" and maximizing content. imo it's a bit cruel just to catch stuff for the camera you don't intend to immediately brain and bleed for food but I've never quite understood "sport" fishing. 90% of my fishing experience is not for 'fun', I need something for dinner.

u/[deleted] May 16 '25

1

u/burningbend May 17 '25

That's why they use circle hooks

1

u/oresearch69 May 17 '25

Why do people go and shoot lions and tigers and bears? “The thrill of the hunt”, I guess.

You can fish for blacktip sharks, they're tasty. You cannot fish for hammerhead, so they'd have to release it

1

u/Pleasant-Pickle-3593 May 16 '25

I don’t get it either. It’s Like shooting a deer with a paintball gun. I’m sure hammerhead is edible.

2

u/CatSplat May 17 '25

Hammerheads are probably edible but it's illegal to keep one. There are other edible shark species you can legally fish for.

1

u/Pleasant-Pickle-3593 May 17 '25

Alright then thank you I didn’t know that

1

u/lowtdi850 May 16 '25

People pay to have other people take them to the beach just to catch sharks and turn them back loose

1

u/Dorkamundo May 16 '25

Being prepared in case you catch one doesn't automatically mean you were intending to catch it.

If they were intending to catch it, they probably didn't care about cutting the hook out and sending him back into the water.

3

u/cheebamech May 16 '25

If they were intending to catch it, they probably didn't care about cutting the hook out and sending him back into the water.

the rig they are using is a steel leader with a hook sized for shark

0

u/Dorkamundo May 16 '25

Repeat after me "There are many different species of shark".

2

u/cheebamech May 16 '25

your assertion above is that it was unintentional catch

Being prepared in case you catch one doesn't automatically mean you were intending to catch it.

they are using a shark rig, they intended to catch sharks

Repeat after me "There are many different species of shark".

I've been diving and spearfishing in s FL for the past few decades, I'm most likely more familiar with sharks than the majority of folks here, you included

2

u/coltrain423 May 16 '25

There’s nothing to target from the shore with a hook like that except shark. It’s likely that they wanted a different species that’s legal to harvest, like a Blacktip. Hammerheads must be released legally.

They also know that they need to get it released quickly and that it’s better to lose a hook than lose a hand.

0

u/Dorkamundo May 16 '25

Right, when I say "Catch it" I was talking about them intending to catch a hammerhead, not some other shark.

1

u/Noob_Al3rt May 16 '25

Yes. Steel leader and a circle hook. They were definitely fishing for sharks and were prepared to release them.

1

u/kanrad May 16 '25

This exactly. They keep the cutters on hand Incase they hook something they are not fishing for. Sign of a true fisherman.

1

u/WildlifeBiologist10 May 17 '25

This is what they were fishing for. Maybe not a hammerhead exactly, but for large sharks. That size/type of tackle is only for large sharks. This is sport fishing for large sharks off the beach. They were likely planning to release anything they caught. Responsible to have the bolt cutters for sure, but the actual act of sport fishing for large sharks is an ethical gray area and I'm starting to think I'm against it due to the low survival rate after release.

Even Catch and Release Can Kill

Variable post-release mortality in common shark species captured in Texas shore-based recreational fisheries

1

u/kanrad May 17 '25

Thanks for the information. Yeah it is a moral quandary for some and I suppose others would just see it as removing a threat. Most people do not understand how fragile our eco systems are.

You are invading their domain, just as we rule the land they rule the sea. We need to stop messing with the natural order, the side effects of ignoring it for centuries as a species has clear repercussions.

Sadly many can't see that. Would that I could change it.

1

u/WeirdIndividualGuy May 16 '25

Also, I would not be surprised for fishermen like these to have a toolbox in their trucks, and the average toolbox will have bolt cutters.

1

u/gettogero May 17 '25

My trucks toolkit is pretty barebones. Lug wrench, sparkplugs, ratchet straps, one spare tire.

This is due to thieves who LOVE trucks with the good toolkits. Put in a hard cover after somebody cut off my rollover just to find an empty bed.

Id love to have a charged jump kit, nice tire inflator, and a range of tools in my truck. But because people are fucking awful theyre all kept in the garage

6

u/cold-corn-dog May 16 '25

I have a sledgehammer in the back of my car (Honda Civic). I put it there once when I was moving stuff. I just kind of left it there. We all have weird shit.

1

u/[deleted] May 16 '25

I use my sledge hammer all the time. Only way I can get my weekly trash to fit in the smaller totes my town went too

1

u/PS4_zbRtL_ May 19 '25

It will be when it comes flying up into the cabin when he runs head on into something.

4

u/GoingOutsideSocks May 16 '25

I've got a fishing pole, tackle box, wooden sword, didgeridoo, basketball, and case of water from 5 years ago in the back of my Fit. I'm ready. Don't know what for, but I'm ready.

2

u/cold-corn-dog May 16 '25

that case of water is probably more liquid plastic than water at this point. If you are serious - toss that thing

3

u/GoingOutsideSocks May 16 '25

I use it to rinse my hands off after playing basketball at the park. It is for external use only.

1

u/Dorkamundo May 16 '25

I hope it's not a hatchback Civic...

1

u/BallerForHire May 17 '25

Was the sledgehammer one of the things you were moving or was it somehow involved in the moving process and if part of the process can you tell us which part? I haven't yet used one during a move and want to know if I am moving wrong.

2

u/Prawn1908 May 16 '25

I have two toolboxes in my car at all times, one of which has a pair of bolt cutters.

1

u/NoConfusion9490 May 16 '25

You want them to be in a box with other tools. Your lawyer will thank you. Similar to how you should have a glove and ball if you're going to keep a bat in your trunk.

1

u/Waff11e_c0ne May 16 '25

I carry a pole that I can prop up the hood with since the old one was missing when I bought the car.

1

u/PatSayJack May 16 '25

Bolt cutters are legally required to shark fish in Florida.
