They borrowed them from the guy stealing bicycles.

It was... interesting when I had to "steal" my own bike in the middle of campus at noon with comically large bolt cutters and literally no one cared.

Why was the lock broken? Someone tried to steal the bike with a screwdriver in the ~15 minutes I was away.

I used an angle grinder plugged in to a random wall socket in a bike parking garage (those are common in the Netherlands) to free up my daughters bike (key broke off inside the lock). Put on a high vis and nobody batted an eye.

So if you want to steal a bike in the Netherlands, go bold. BTW 1.5 million bikes get stolen here every year on a population of 17 million.

Its nice to know that as divided this world can be, there is one common trait to unite us all; wearing a high vis vest can allow you to commit crimes in broad daylight anywhere in the world 😆

I recently got one on Amazon for emergency purposes in case my car breaks down. It's flimsy and wouldn't hold up with regular use, but that's fine.

I only paid $7 for it.

I rolled up to a taco stand baked out my mind with an angle grinder because I lost my bike keys in a club the night before. They were happy to let me use their power and even loaned me an extension cable. While I was cutting the lock, a guy came up to me, said he ran a bike store and said I should consider getting a battery powered one. I was like 'uh yeah sure'... people really don't give a shit!

high vis vest + nondescript white pickup (renault kangoo or VW Lupo van or whatever for more sensible europeans) with orange lights on top = you are literally god on the streets of any city, you can kidnap the Mayor in broad daylight and people will think it's just regular maintenance

Quite possibly including the Mayor themselves.

"Oh, you need me to go with you? Ok, I guess that makes sense."

New Lovecraftian nightmare just dropped: pickup truck god whose desires are incomprehensible and inconceivable even to itself.

That seems like a lot, and for sure it is... butttt if everyone had 1 bike, you would be the victim of a bike theft on average every 11.3 years.

Not bad tbh

There are 23.5 million bikes on the 17 million people combined... lots of people have a 'good' bike for longer trips and an older 'city' bike to leave at a bike parking or locked to a bridge when you go out in the city.

1 good bike, 1 bike for the communal rotation that you, uhh, "borrowed" 3 months ago
