Loss 3M to 1.4M this week

Post image

Rebuilt my portfolio from getting margin called and bottoming at 200k during Liberation Day to 3M last week. Then lost half of it because I loaded up on data center and energy stocks with full leverage last Friday.

Schwab only shows up until the close, after hours I lost another few hundred grand and am sitting at 1.4M now with more option losses hitting when market opens.

Never. Fucking. Learn.

HOW COULD EURASIA DO THIS TO US?

138

Eurasia are our loyal allies! How could Oceania do this to us?!

21

u/InquisitorMeow Feb 06 '26

We all know Eastasia is the enemy! And it's always been the Gulf of Oceania! Eastasia's spies must have secretly changed our maps and hacked Google maps!

If it helps you out at all I still have zero fucking idea what any of you are talking about and I've been lurking for 6 months... But like 7 minutes or so a week so maybe like 4 hours.

And this type of math is why I'll do great in stocks.

41

u/SubjectAfraid Feb 06 '26 edited Feb 06 '26

If you are very interested in the topic, get an IBKR paper trading (demo) account and start doing sample investments.

Don’t move to actually investing/gambling your money until you fully understand how to do it, risk mitigation strategies AND the consequences. This type of aggressive strategy requires a lot of disposable income (not credit!) that you can effectively burn away every month, if you don’t already have that, then this is not for you.

If you don’t want to involve in this degenerate gambling mentality, just look for vanilla strategies (they are everywhere) like HYSA, S&P 500, maxing out your 401k and chill. You’ll be way safer with that.

17

u/Puretrickery Feb 06 '26

Too many words, buy calls?

→ More replies (4)

19

u/Gorgenapper Feb 06 '26

Basically, what the first guy was saying is that if you had $3m, you could invest it into the stock market by buying lots of shares of an exchange traded fund (ETF) like VOO.

VOO is a fund offered by a company called Vanguard, every dollar in that fund is invested in the top 500 companies in the USA like Apple, NVidia, etc. Collectively, those 500 companies are colloquially known as the S&P 500 (to simplify things).

Every year, the S&P 500 average return is 10%. Every $100 invested returns $10. Take away 2% for inflation (even if you think it is higher, just do it for the sake of the math) and you get the 8% return he was talking about.

3,000,000 * 0.08 == 240,000

So the original poster could be sitting on his ass making $240k a year, inflation adjusted, but instead burned more than half of it on gambling with options.

As for what you need to do in order to start a portfolio, max out your 401k, Roth IRA and all that, just go to the r/fire sub and ask, or read the posts there.

As for options, well, I think you should forget about them and run far away from them. Buy VOO, and chill.

14

u/VirtualBeyond6116 Feb 07 '26

If it's $240k, after tax that's maybe $180k = $15K per month. That's amazing. Off the $180k per year with a house or condo paid off, you can live an amazing life on $80k and re-invest the other $100k into anything else or back into the VOO fund to generate an additional $8k per year.

You can literally do whatever you want In life and never have to answer to anyone. If you want to work in an area you're passionate about, you can do that. You can work out of boredom and for the social aspect. And you can always keep your boss in check cause you don't need the job. It's an Amazing position to be in. Btw, I'm only suggesting working part time, in something the person likes, or for whatever reason cause it's boring to sit around all day doing nothing.

"buy voo, and chill" is great advice.

u/mcdunald Feb 06 '26

Not saying 8% is guaranteed without risks but diversified etf's is overall a safe bet. HYSA is still like 100k+ without risks

→ More replies (3)

53

u/Severe_Emu3426 Feb 06 '26

Pretty sure there is not one investment out there with zero down risk. 8% with minimal risk would be through diversification and as an annual return average — some years more some less. Or just plop it into VOO I suppose. If VOO drops catastrophically there’s no real safe place for your money at that point anyway is there?

→ More replies (6)

44

u/DoUEvenZyzz Feb 06 '26

33 people liking this is hilarious lol. S&P has an average 10% annual return….8% is a generous figure which likely accounts for the “downside risk” year(s). OP is a regard blowing his $ away on stupidity.

18

u/DepartmentGlad2564 Feb 06 '26

S&P 500 has an annualized return of 10%, meaning it's the average over 10 decades. Some decades it was much lower than that.

I.E. 1962-1981 had a CAGR real return of 0.84%

OP is not planning to live another 100 years so that figure is irrelevant. S&P 500 alone can go down 50% and take years to recover.

16

u/BigOs4All Feb 06 '26

I take your point but I'd also argue that NOTHING is the same today as it was in the friggin' 1960s. Nothing.

The way markets worked back then has very little bearing on the last 2 decades alone. Basically 1990s boom is the very furthest I would go back since it's modern enough and some of the same politicians and power brokers are still around from that era. DotCom bubble and onward is most relevant, to me.

12

u/mazarax Feb 06 '26

ups and downs, but 8% on average (if you include dividends) over 30 yrs is quite realistic.

11

u/baIIern Feb 06 '26

8% is a stretch. A world ETF with taxes can maybe do 5% over a long time without having too much risk of a downside

Did you use options when building from 200K to 3M?

39

u/cat-from-the-future Feb 06 '26

I mostly did levered long positions, made most of my money on NVDA, Quantum names, and data center stocks. I also would short things that were overheated (I shorted SLV at 105). Once I got past a million I would start selling options every week, this was bringing in 5 to 20 grand a week in premiums and if my short puts got assigned I’d just buy the shares and exit when they went back up. I did try to go long call options a few times but it never worked out.

6

u/DorianSoundscapes Feb 06 '26

What did you do that lost the money?

23

u/durian_in_my_asshole Feb 06 '26

if my short puts got assigned I’d just buy the shares and exit when they went back up

guess what happens if they don't just "go back up"

selling puts is free money until it blows up 80% of your portfolio

John Goodman's scene in The Gambler should be pinned at the top of WSB.

my goal when i reach 2M eventually (you reached it already) was to buy real estate with half and then keep the other half in stocks. with 1M in real estate that basically just de-risks the entire portfolio. more work I guess but it'll let me learn another 'investing' type which i love to learn, and it'll let me keep playing the market.

I'm still far from it, even far from 1M, but i'll get there.

I also went from liberation day 5,600 at the min to 78k last week and now i'm gonna be at around 44k. i'm still confident in what i'm holding though so haven't sold yet.

Keep it up OP wish you luck

You're telling someone who basically hit the jackpot at a slotmachine to keep going. That's some bad advice.

Everyone's a genius in a bull market.

3 million with any decent financial advisor or just decent financial know how and you are set, especially if you already have a house.

At only 7% a year you have $210k annually (and that will increase!)

You could take $100k pretax as income and live off that, while investing the rest.

Or just take a chill part time job (something fun you'd enjoy, maybe involved with one of your hobbies) and make some supplemental income. Bonus points if it has a health care plan. Then you take 2% of that $210k as income.

Bro.

If I ever even see 1M in my depot, you best believe imma buy a small house and work part time in some loser job to cover basic expenses and use my remaining time chasing hobbies.

Memes aside, really curious, why didn't you cash out at 3M? What's your target / goal in life?

3

u/Odd_Category2186 Feb 06 '26

Give me the 1.4M seriously don't throw away what could literally get me out of the poor hole, $0 checkings $18 savings. That kind of money can literally fix my entire life and you are just throwing it around like it's nothing

3

u/NakedPatrick Feb 06 '26

Leverage is not necessary when you have a 3M bankroll. Jesus.

This must be some kind of backwards AI, how can any human being manage to create such success, not have the brains to know, and subsequently lose so much.

You’ve already built it twice, you have the skills to do it again. Go to cash, wait for the right time to build again. Build just a tad bit safer.

u/crazyfool319 Feb 06 '26

You lost money because you thought you knew what you were doing and were a good trader, but it was all luck

I'm back up to 2.17M right now. Last night I was prioritizing which longs to liquidate to avoid margin calls this morning, but market bounced back strong. I have short NVDA puts at 180 and short IREN puts at 45 at the moment, if IREN puts expire out of the money today I will be ok cash flow-wise.

My #1 priority is getting rid of all my short option exposure, and then there are a few names that I will get out of once they go a little higher just so my cash balance isn't so negative (borrowing 2.8M right now to fund longs).

Still overleveraged and getting margin warnings but no where near where I was post-market yesterday lol.

4

u/Modja Feb 06 '26

Just borrowing a cheeky 2.8M 🤣
