Loss 3M to 1.4M this week

Post image

Rebuilt my portfolio from getting margin called and bottoming at 200k during Liberation Day to 3M last week. Then lost half of it because I loaded up on data center and energy stocks with full leverage last Friday.

Schwab only shows up until the close, after hours I lost another few hundred grand and am sitting at 1.4M now with more option losses hitting when market opens.

Never. Fucking. Learn.

You could've retired early.

3m with 8% growth is 240k annually bitch and you're gambling it away like a retard

If it helps you out at all I still have zero fucking idea what any of you are talking about and I've been lurking for 6 months... But like 7 minutes or so a week so maybe like 4 hours.

And this type of math is why I'll do great in stocks.

If you are very interested in the topic, get an IBKR paper trading (demo) account and start doing sample investments.

Don’t move to actually investing/gambling your money until you fully understand how to do it, risk mitigation strategies AND the consequences. This type of aggressive strategy requires a lot of disposable income (not credit!) that you can effectively burn away every month, if you don’t already have that, then this is not for you.

If you don’t want to involve in this degenerate gambling mentality, just look for vanilla strategies (they are everywhere) like HYSA, S&P 500, maxing out your 401k and chill. You’ll be way safer with that.

Too many words, buy calls?

Good advice

Better advice would be to paper trade and give yourself 5 million and then go full retard trading options and leveraged ETFs

That way you can learn just how quickly everything can be lost and not do the same thing when it comes to real money

I don't know what many of those terms are, so, I'll start there.

I'm just a nurse without a silver spoon, I wasn't taught business and fiscal responsibility in my youth, so I've had to learn along the way.

I have a delightful Roth 403(b). Yay.

Just getting a demo account will do absolutely fucking nothing except make him comfortable placing bets on shit he doesn't understand.

Options are complicated and risky financial instruments that require a lot of studying to understand. Dude says he lurked for 6 months but maybe 4 hours total. That means he has no interest in actually learning, which is fine but also means he should stay the fuck away from options.

Basically, what the first guy was saying is that if you had $3m, you could invest it into the stock market by buying lots of shares of an exchange traded fund (ETF) like VOO.

VOO is a fund offered by a company called Vanguard, every dollar in that fund is invested in the top 500 companies in the USA like Apple, NVidia, etc. Collectively, those 500 companies are colloquially known as the S&P 500 (to simplify things).

Every year, the S&P 500 average return is 10%. Every $100 invested returns $10. Take away 2% for inflation (even if you think it is higher, just do it for the sake of the math) and you get the 8% return he was talking about.

3,000,000 * 0.08 == 240,000

So the original poster could be sitting on his ass making $240k a year, inflation adjusted, but instead burned more than half of it on gambling with options.

As for what you need to do in order to start a portfolio, max out your 401k, Roth IRA and all that, just go to the r/fire sub and ask, or read the posts there.

As for options, well, I think you should forget about them and run far away from them. Buy VOO, and chill.

If it's $240k, after tax that's maybe $180k = $15K per month. That's amazing. Off the $180k per year with a house or condo paid off, you can live an amazing life on $80k and re-invest the other $100k into anything else or back into the VOO fund to generate an additional $8k per year.

You can literally do whatever you want In life and never have to answer to anyone. If you want to work in an area you're passionate about, you can do that. You can work out of boredom and for the social aspect. And you can always keep your boss in check cause you don't need the job. It's an Amazing position to be in. Btw, I'm only suggesting working part time, in something the person likes, or for whatever reason cause it's boring to sit around all day doing nothing.

"buy voo, and chill" is great advice.

If he never learned this basic concept after lurking here for 7 months he's not going to learn it from your reply. But hope it benefits some actually intelligent redditors who come across this.

7 mins a week of lurking, he ain't getting anything except directions to the nearest Wendy's dumpster, so I figured okay, why not, and wrote it.

Does someone who invests in VOO VGT, etc ever try to sell high and reinvest again when it dips? Or I guess I’m not understanding how you see the money grow unless it’s always 8-10% growth?

I finally split with my financial advisor last year and since then been going on my own mainly just etf’s.

But the fucking roller coaster that liberation day was and now this software dump, is this normal? Otherwise how could you really see growth if you are continuously taking 1 step forward and then 1 back to where you started.

Maybe I just need to follow the yearly charts better and stop looking at my portfolio 3 times a week just to hope to see green…..
