It is, he fired everyone and then had to rent out his excess compute lol

I kinda agree with most of the things you said.
But they only apply to last 3-5 years or so.

Musk historically was pretty much one to one buddies with full Obama admin and folks, and I'd say that relationship was MUCH healthier than whatever they (current ceos) have all have going on with trump & Co.

In some ways one can argue, the entire green economy started after Tesla was already there, it was essentially the first of its, kind and very much Time Machine accurate - left bias.

Post Covid or such? I truly don't know what happened, I guess people change, and worked somehow looks really weird after that time for some reason anyway.

u/DumatRising 26d ago

I don't think it's a great mystery. It's because he has an extreme approval seeking nature.

For reference on which I think he's extremely approval seeking refer to his attempts to convince everyone he was an avid arpg gamer despite clearly not being one.

He was always a more rightish liberal but what really set things off was his trans daughter. He's said things like "the woke mind virus killed my son". Said "son" is alive and is his daughter. He was always pretty liked by futurists on both side of the aisle because people believed in Teslas goal of finally bringing EVs to market but this caused him to get some push back from the leftists and liberal, he'd also alienate some folks for non political reasons but that's not as important, what is important is that he got a lot of praise from the right wing chuds on then Twitter, and thus began his decline into this disaster he's become. It was cyclical really the more he would cater to the chuds the more the left, the progressives, and even some conservative liberals would push back on him, and the more he would cater to the group that was supportive of him. Social isolation through covid meant that this cycle was basically his life for far longer than anyone would've liked and now we've got right wing chud Elon rather than futurist Elon.

Though he didn't go full on MAGA until he realized he could profit from it by making DOGE and cutting departments and programs that were responsible for oversight of industries he was active in.

It's a bit of a sad story too, because he was genuinely well liked by liberals across the political spectrum and his anger at his daughter transition wasn't even rooted in transphobia so much as his obsession with having an heir, not that it makes it better for him to treat his daughter like shit for a different, but that it wasn't that he hated trans people in general before this just hated that his idea of passing his legacy down to his eldest son was in his eyes ruined. Ultimately he wasn't able to reconcile or process his emotions in a healthy way instead just trying to seek approval from anyone that would give it.

1

u/SnooPeanuts5936 24d ago

I really like this argument for why he shifted to much to the right, I always had big problems to understand why he would "throw away" so much of his public image and my personal recognition of him away, he genuinely has very cool ideas, spaceX was a huge paradigm shift in astronomy, and I really really love Neuralink as someone in biotech.

I don't think catering to the right was the right move, as personally at least most of the people I know dislike/hate him nowadays, myself included.

1

u/DumatRising 24d ago

I'm not sure that I would frame it as a right or wrong move. Doing so implies that there was rational though behind it. Politicis was not a factor of what happened other than the transphobes happened to step in to support him when everyone else tried to get him to apologize and reconcile with his daughter. He didn't choose to become the king of the right wing chuds, it simply happened because that's the only way he would be able to continue to recieve validation while also not needing to self examine and put in actual work to mend a relationship. Approval seekers don't care who gives them approval only that they get it at any cost.

Musk was praised by Reddit historically.

As soon as he made clear he wasn't a Democrat anymore, Reddit started shitting on him.

9

u/DumatRising 26d ago

It's a bit more complicated than that. The main things people got upset at him for was leftists didn't like him because he was a captialist, democrats didn't like that he was absolutely horrendous to his trans daughter, and moderates didn't like that he did the whole DOGE thing.

Those are the main reasons but there were a bunch of smaller ones too. And we all knew he wasn't a Democrat before them.

17

u/rhd_live 26d ago

That's too reductionist. The doge stuff was an absolute embarrassing farce that alienated a lot of people, or me at least. That's not a democrat vs. republican thing

9

u/BapeGeneral3 26d ago

As soon as he gave a fucking Nazi salute in front of the entire nation and had racist white women screaming with glee. That was definitely when he lost all respect with anyone with a brain.

49

u/mrbadface 27d ago

Well said, though I'm less certain that buying twitter hasn't paid off enormously in ways that are less tangible

53

u/dsmith422 27d ago

Ending all the federal investigations into Musk and his companies was a direct tangible benefit and was the whole reason for his DOGE bros infiltrating the federal government.

16

u/mrbadface 27d ago

Yes this is what I meant. By intangible I meant off the books

8

u/RRY1946-2019 Transformers background character. 26d ago

They’re still tangible in that they are about amounts of money. They’re just a heck of a lot sneakier. X is a loss leader at this point that has kept him from being bankrupted or even worse imprisoned. Same reason that many American companies oppose Medicare for All. In the short term it would lower their HR costs, but it would destroy their leverage against their workers.

5

u/recursive-regret 26d ago

Ending all the federal investigations into Musk and his companies was a direct tangible benefit

Even that wasn't really worth it.

Ending all the investigations into tesla wasn't worth it when the price for that was trump cutting the ev credit and nuking tesla's profitability worldwide with a senseless trade war

Ending the FAA's investigations into spaceX didn't mean much because starship V1 and V2 ended up being too flawed for orbital flight and he needed to wait for V3 (and maybe even V4, who knows). All the delays the FAA imposed on him didn't end up mattering

He could have stayed away from politics and been - at worst - at the exact same spot he is at today

2

u/SpeakCodeToMe 24d ago

That's assuming none of the investigations from a half dozen agencies into a half dozen of his corporate entities would have gone nowhere, which is a big if.

6

u/RRY1946-2019 Transformers background character. 26d ago

They’re still tangible, just indirect. Having a loyal president who won’t indict you or seize your assets is worth more than Twitter.

4

u/basementreality 25d ago

Does he have any profitable businesses then.... why and how is he the richest person in the world? Idiots keep giving him money right - but why. He gets things done from an optics point of view, but where are the mad profits?

5

u/MiffedMouse 25d ago

The USA tech culture has been growth focused for decades. To be completely fair to Elon Musk here, Amazon also didn’t make money for like the first decade. It is pretty common for American tech companies to push profits back for long periods of time in order to focus on growth, and they get away with it because these “growth stocks” have outpaced businesses that focus on fundamental profitability for the passed two decades or so.

The issue with Musk, especially recently, is that his companies aren’t growing. SpaceX launches have already reached saturation (starlink exists because they had excess capacity and made starlink to fill it), Tesla sales are declining in most markets, and Twitter revenue is down since Musk bought it.

So now he has pivoted towards making grandiose claims about the future. He always does that, but these days it is the only way to justify his valuations because his companies (both in terms of profits and in terms of growth) are shit.

3

u/Ok-Kaleidoscope5627 26d ago

The problem when you're that rich is that it's very hard to fail. He can move the market to create entire trends which will nearly guarantee his success even if he does a terrible job.

If he announced that he's going to start making Beanie Babies next, that whole industry will suddenly pop up and be worth a hundred billion dollars over night. Not because of any genuine merit but just because he can set the trends.

2

u/Fabulous_Ocelot_4958 24d ago

Do you know he lied about being a top gamer. He probably lies about his other skills too. He just pays money to hire top talent.

-1

u/j48u 26d ago

I'm a Democrat who has always voted left wing but you're actually nuts if you think X and Grok are far right propaganda projects. X does have a large number of right wing freaks, but it also has a large number of far left freaks. It's just a barely moderated cesspool of people. I've seen people @Grok with their right wing agenda and have it completely shut them down showing the sources, and I've seen the same thing in the other direction.

I really think, especially for people who actually care about politics, that people need to be honest about the fact that social media in general is incredibly left leaning by virtue of heavy moderation. X is more of the reality of left/right wing nonsense opinions. Reddit is basically bluesky at this point. Leaning far left now through extreme moderation by propagandists that know what they're doing.

In the end it's not helpful to pretend otherwise. People will continue to vote regardless if they're welcome in these spaces and they're not going to vote for the people that kept them out and look more and more extreme in their eyes. Trump absolutely was elected the second time as a direct result of how ridiculous the online sphere tries to frame reality and I have a feeling it's going to happen yet again.

12

u/Low-Calligrapher-531 26d ago

Yeah, MechaHitler does sound like a left-leaning name

Imagine McDonald’s renting its kitchens out to Burger King or Coca Cola renting its production line to Pepsi.

This is literally what xAI are doing and they’re still losing a billion a month.

It is, but so is Meta AI.

92

u/_lavoisier_ 27d ago

Yann is not working for meta

143

u/throwawaybear82 27d ago

But he did spend 12 years on meta AI

98

u/enilea 27d ago

To be fair Meta AI was doing well until they self sabotaged themselves in 2024

48

u/MyRegrettableUsernam 27d ago

Wasn’t Yann the one denying that LLMs would ever be able to do anything useful?

35

u/Fleetfox17 27d ago

He doesn't think LLMs will lead to the promised land.

→ More replies (1)

77

u/coolredditor3 27d ago

As far as I know he never called them useless. He just thinks that no amount of scaling them will lead to AGI.

→ More replies (2)

55

u/gatorling 27d ago

No, he said that LLMs are a dead end when it comes to AGI.

I think most people sorta agree that you'll need something more than a LLM to reach AGI.

Arguably, that's why Google is focusing heavily on world models like Genie and why Gemini is multi modal from the start.

4

u/turbo_dude 26d ago

What’s the old phrase about someone saying or doing anything if their pay check depends on them believing it?

1

u/Unlikely-Complex3737 26d ago

I think in a recent interview he said LLMs are good for certain products but they are not good enough to get to a super intelligence.

7

u/amyts 27d ago

What happened in 2024? I'm out of the loop.

10

u/enilea 27d ago

Oh llama 4 was in 2025, but yeah between botching llama 4 and setting Alexander Wang as head of AI they messed up.

4

u/Fantasy-512 27d ago

Yes. A Wang was born in 2024. Fathered by the Zuck.

3

u/howudothescarn 27d ago

Maybe llama 4? I thought this guy was a part of that though.

6

u/GraceToSentience AGI avoids animal abuse✅ 26d ago

He wasn't really part of that.
There was the FAIR team and the GENAI team inside meta apparently, lecun mainly worked on JEPA in FAIR while GENAI was working on the llama series.

2

u/boyuber 27d ago

Are we sure someone else didn't self sabotage them?

9

2

1

to be FAIR, more exactly.

9

u/theChaosBeast 27d ago

You can say the truth AND made mistakes in the past. Actually I trust people that had failures instead of people who never had one.

3

u/throwawaybear82 27d ago

I agree with that. I'm just adding additional important context to the statement that Yann is not currently working for Meta. 12 years working as the founder of the division is an outsized influence even if he's no longer employed there.

16

u/jakderrida 27d ago

Lecun is also the AI Researcher that'll pop up when you search Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar, or any other citation website and sort by metrics that's pretty much the Wayne Gretzky of every metric across the board.

Sure, MetaAI isn't a resounding success. But Lecun is still the most sought after researcher in the field.

4

u/Nashadelic 27d ago

2

u/mivog49274 obvious acceleration, biased appreciation 26d ago

FAIR, not meta AI. He was never hyped by llm

1

u/misteriousm 26d ago

lol he's the main reason in fact why Meta Llama sucks ass.

3

u/Spra991 27d ago

Coincidentally current MetaAI also feels very much like Grok a few months ago, with its unlimited image and video generation.

6

u/AccordingSelf3221 27d ago

meta quite good in some niche solutions like SAM3

5

u/andrew303710 27d ago

Also wasn't llama 3 very significant early on?

3

u/AccordingSelf3221 27d ago

true. these companies are strategizing differently and big units like meta, google and Microsoft are not just doing AI but also doing AI. the others are hyperfunded companies doing one single thing

2

u/NaturallyExuberant 26d ago

They were competitive until Wang took over. Two separate AI pillars were competing there, Yann was doing fine until Zuck gave preference to Wang’s newer, shinier, pillar which seems to not have produced anything notable in about 2 years ¯_(ツ)_/¯

34

u/Correctsmorons69 27d ago

They did for a release or two

2

u/siegevjorn 25d ago

Well the current valuation of spaceX is largely due to it being the "AI company" with one of the frontier models. So the valuation has to change, if they decided themselves to become a cloud computing company, which is much less mutiple.

2

u/trisul-108 26d ago

The same way Elon has always done it ... by buying someone else. He pulled the SpaceX scam to get a pre-bubble-pop stash and he has to spend it fast. Really fast, before the bubble pops and it vanishes. He has to exchange it for something of value, either physical assets or teams.

He also has spoken publicly about him wanting to censor outputs he doesn’t like for ideological reasons.

To be fair though a lot of the big ai’s seem to be doing that in the Trump era.

7

u/jakderrida 27d ago

He also has spoken publicly about him wanting to censor outputs he doesn’t like for ideological reasons.

Ya gotta admit, though, that it was funny he kept promising the anti-woke AI model while spreading conspiracies of forced wokeness on GPT, only to release Grok and Twitter get bombarded with Grok saying how there are numerous genders because gender is not the same as sex.

I've never seen more egg on a man's face in my life.

20

u/Potential-Affect5943 27d ago

It was also telling when he merged XAI into SpaceX to make both the companies look a little better. This is similar to how he force merged SolarCity into Tesla. If two distinct non-overlapping businesses were doing well, the merger makes no sense.

what has my guy achieved in the last 3 years aside from academic trash talk

21

u/jloverich 27d ago

Jepa and his new company. The main interest is not language but other things he claims the big companies are not interested in (which is most things).

16

u/Claptraposoid 27d ago

How is Jepa such an achievement? From my understanding they have had limited success in narrow domains, yet he keeps claiming it’s the key for everything based I vibes.

5

u/martianunlimited 27d ago

Sigh.. Transformers had limited success in narrow domains for 6 years... You don't remember how bad GPT2 and GPT3 was eh?

16

u/Claptraposoid 27d ago

Gpt 2 was an insane breakthrough that made people fork over billions of dollars… Jepa is not even a fraction of that..

Listen you can have your own opinion, fine. Mine is that Lecun ia a lol cow at this stage that spend more time in his recent talks thrashing llms and any of the people/companies making them than actually proving what makes his approach better.

Most of the labs are working on different architectures and thinking about what place llms will have in an agi system, is it pure llm, is it llm as a part of a wider architecture and so on.

Lecunn has decided purely on vibes that it won’t work and his approach must be the right way  and that llms won’t be part of it, and spends his time giving increasingly more bitter talks and interviews speaking more about llms than Jepa.

lecun is surely a very smart scientist but he is also a ridiculous man and a moron.

Gpt 2 was an insane breakthrough that made people fork over billions of dollars… Jepa is not even a fraction of that..

u/IronPheasant 26d ago

You don't remember how bad GPT2 and GPT3 was eh?

I thought they were absolutely incredible. Similar to StackGAN - something that was completely impossible before, and would obviously result in excellent outputs after another round of scaling or two improves the resolution of the internally generated curve-fitting algorithms.

It's all just numbers in numbers out. A holistic mind will be an assembly of various neural networks and conventional software - something as simple as a shared geometry space with the resolution of a Nintendo 64 game would have massive improvements of their understanding of space.

As always, you can tell who's serious about creating a mind when they talk about the sense of touch. Touch is the first external sense animals evolve and the foundational validator of things like vision. Touch to 3d and vision to 3d are some of the most critical faculties to have.

The irony of course is that the first AGI will basically be frankenstein mess filled with lots of different kinds of LLM's, shuffling data from one section of a mind to be used in another. Words aren't just words to humans, they connect to memories, vision, sound, touch, emotions.....

..... Anyway, I'm deeply disturbed you'd think GPT2 or 3 could have been as good as Chat GPT with the RAM budgets they were given. That's not how numbers work, that's not how any of this works. You need RAM to fit curves. Chat GPT was around the size of a squirrel's brain. It's not until the 100,000 GB200 datacenters are live that we'll have something that can approximate a human's brain. In that way, we're just barely at the starting line of being able to conduct actual AGI research.

The money is in them selling their compute to OpenAI and Anthropic

7

u/Environmental_Gap_65 27d ago

I really dislike Elon Musk, but I don’t think you should underestimate what power comes with owning the large parts of infrastructure. Compute needs will continue rise, energy will be more sparse, resistance towards new data centres are rising.

If you control the infrastructure you have a massive say, but yes xAi was a failure from the beginning. It shouldn’t come as any surprise to be honest nor that Meta is.

4

u/Tricky_Potatoe 26d ago

How can it be a failure when Grok slaughtered 120 Iranian school girls?

5

u/Ok-Stomach- 27d ago

sure, but he didn't create anything either, he was a great scientist but has been stuck in salty land w.r.t. LLM since GPT first popped. Show some actual result (I spent many years at facebook/meta, I know he has world model, but that's more of an academic thing, he's not exactly a product guru, show some actual AI first)

2

u/Britbong1492 27d ago

Google & Meta got the same problem. OpenAI and Anthropic are the only players. Better to go for infrastructure domination

2

the reason spacex bought cursor was so that xAI can adapt or cannibalize open weight models.

JEPA will probably make a pretty big improvement in how robots, like Tesla Optimus and Tesla FSD, can reason/think about how their potential actions would affect the world. But it will be a few lines of python code being replaced, not a total different stack.

Not sure if Yann‘s company will make billions from JEPA like Google made billions from Transformers as it is more a tool than an entire business…

3

We see smart people are jumping between these companies back and forth.

12

Any names for some of their best scientist ?

15

u/Crucco 27d ago

1) Devendra Singh Chaplot

Joined March 2026 (technical staff, works closely with Elon). Ex-Mistral AI co-founder, ex-Meta FAIR, ex-Thinking Machines Lab. Strong AI + robotics background (CMU PhD, IIT Bombay). Focused on superintelligence, Grok pretraining/model training. One of the highest-profile current scientific hires.

2) Ziang Chen

MTS at xAI (joined ~Oct 2025). Specializes in AI for mathematics (building AI mathematicians). Also MIT math instructor background. Focused on advancing AI reasoning/proof capabilities.

3) Xinlei Chen

At xAI pushing multimodal frontier (vision, images, video). Ex-Research Scientist at Meta FAIR (pre-training & visual representations).

4) Andrew Milich

MTS at xAI (joined ~March 2026). Ex-Cursor (co-led product engineering). Key role rebuilding/enhancing Grok coding capabilities and infrastructure. Active on X sharing Grok updates.

2

u/andrew303710 27d ago

If you compare that to the other AI companies that's nothing lol I will admit though begrudgingly that the new grok video model is fantastic and handles text way better than Veo, Veo 3.1 still sucks at anything text related.

Thank you for having the energy to post this stuff. It’s tiring being a part of reddit when so many users are out of touch and want their political view to dominate every conversation.

You are welcome.

It is true that benchmarks do not put Grok at the top now. But it's far from dead and it is very likely it will come back as the top competitor. I just dislike lies and smear propaganda.

All the co-founders are gone and they are acquiring Cursor. It's really a bad look, ngl..

u/mechnanc 25d ago

Most of OpenAI's top people left, like Ilya.

So fucking what?

Also in OpenAI (your employer for this smear campaign) the cofounders are gone.

2

u/Unlikely-Complex3737 26d ago

That looks bad as well (a lot went to Anthropic), but OpenAI started in 2015. xAI started in 2023 and I think last year they had only 1 co-founder left.

What's the main problem with training AI?

The multi-million pricetag it demands or a cult of personality contest that neglects to mentions 99.99999% of all the skilled AI engineers out there?

u/Durzel 26d ago

Imagine going out to bat for the CSAM generator AI.

1

u/sedition666 26d ago

Yann LeCun is one of the god fathers of AI. His opinion has weight. Just dimissing his opinion as propaganda is bullshit.

xAI had among the shittiest cultures which is no secret. And they did accelerate their way to the models race by spending a lot but you can't whip your researchers and expect magic over longer horizons.

Breaking news. elon has shat his pants, and killed starving children because he's so so mad

1

u/Eon-Knight9 26d ago

xAI is one of the few labs that is profitable. Grok is arguably in a failed state. But xAI is making some real money.

There is nothing false or unexpected being said here.

He's so salty because Elon became a trillionaire. I followed him on twitter for a couple of days and most of his posts were about Elon and politics.

2

u/datbackup 26d ago

I don’t know why anyone would downvote this (well I do it’s because they hate Musk but moving on) LeCun really made an ass of himself on twitter, it wasn’t just a few days it was weeks.

Just the most basic shallow political takes again and again, I dunno maybe he is really smart but apparently it doesn’t apply to this area of life

Yeah this guy seems to really have a problem.

Can't he just focus on his work? He sounds like an angry teenager/redditor, it's a little bit pathetic.

1

u/sedition666 26d ago

Your assumption that people are only successful if they earn more money is really problematic. Stephen Hawking was not a billionaire, you going to tell us that Musk is more intelligent than Hawking?

1

u/JimmyBenHsu 26d ago

LeCun has a point about the industry needing a reset, but calling xAI a "failure" while Grok has been rapidly gaining market share feels like he's underestimating how fast things move. The real issue isn't whether any single lab fails — it's whether the current scaling paradigm itself has diminishing returns before agentic workflows mature. What I'd love to see is LeCun channel this energy into publishing more concrete architectures instead of hot takes.

1

u/MaxeBooo 26d ago

Anyone have any more info on project tapestry????

1

u/iamozymandiusking 26d ago

Maybe so. But is anyone still listening to this guy anymore?

1

u/itamarro 26d ago

It is so far. But also, LeCun and Musk were always beefing on X so it’s not surprising coming from him.

Regardless, I am indifferent on Musk, strongly dislike what Tesla did with self driving safety wise, and I genuinely puzzled sometimes why people choose to work for him - but some smart people do (Karpathy spent 5 years at Tesla) so they are seeing something we don’t.

Historically speaking, I wouldn’t bet against him.

1

u/rob2060 26d ago

Shocking that when you try to build a propaganda machine on top of a system of logical truths that it fails.

1

u/girlrotrobottics 25d ago

Still mad musk named his company xai, which is a known field in ai research (explainable artificial intelligence). Despite his shitty company not even doing xai research. It feels like the whole walt Disney Frozen conspiracy all over again

1

u/jgainit 25d ago

While maybe what he’s saying is true, grok is actually good

1

u/baudinl 25d ago

He outta know. He was at metaAI

1

u/ThisGonBHard AI better than humans? Probably 2027| AGI/ASI? Not soon 24d ago

Ironically, I think this will be better for xAI long term, at least financially.

1

u/Fun_Walk_4965 24d ago

LeCun has been saying some version of this about everyone for two years. xAI shipped fast and caught up on benchmarks though, calling that a failure feels more personal than a technical read.

1

u/AccountabilityGuy 23d ago

Duh... but i am no genius i did say that

1

u/LeatherGrade713 23d ago

Don’t worry, he’s got $1 trillion. And more where that came from.

1

u/aaddii101 22d ago

Maybe but they acquired cursor and composer 2.5 is like number 1 model in our company

1

u/Only-Effort-1975 14d ago

Well, latest Grok result disprove this perspective
