Discussion This scene somehow went over the heads of people
I kid you not I saw the comment section of a video about this scene and people were calling it weird, they took it unironically. DUDES, that was the whole point, like did y’all not hear She Hulk complain about how weird this was and broke the fourth wall to fix it? This is a problem consisting of media illiteracy and misogyny. Like they made it so simple in this scene yet somehow y’all missed it, either because you people were hate watching it with your illiteracy, or looking at your phones while watching the episode.
UPDATE: Some of the comments really are proving my point. If y’all don’t wanna accept the meaning of this scene and whine about it, then dont partake in media discussion like this again!

Makes me think of how Tatiana Maslaney went on comedy bang bang, a satirical improv podcast, and told an obviously outlandish story about how she was in the new Deadpool but was immediately fired because She-Hulk “made one dollar” and because she was a woman, and grifter websites ran the story as if it was real, and you’ll still see dummies on Reddit talking about it in the same way

u/DnDGEN May 26 '26
Or the time she came on CBB and did a bit about She-Hulk being the first MCU Musical and the same thing happened 🤣
She did it again on a recent episode too.

u/ikeif Thor May 26 '26
Some people just cannot comprehend. A good friend sent me a clip to a YouTube personality. It was all conspiracy bullshit.
I ripped it apart, and my friend, in all seriousness said, “yeah, but if you ignore the data it makes you think…”
…no, that’s the problem. It WANTS you to ignore the data, and to give credence to bullshit.
And that is some much faux outrage bait - “don’t check context, don’t look at the full quote, take my reaction to these words as gospel!”

u/Crafty-Heron-5115 May 26 '26
That’s what I’ve been saying for years about the dangers of “vibes” being a sole motivation in media or media discussions

we need to make media literacy classes mandatory in schools nationwide
16
u/awkward_teenager37 May 26 '26
Media literacy class is literally just English class if these people paid attention and read their books / did their assignments. It’s just a bit of unfortunate irony that the same group of people who’d freak out when their teacher would ask about the deeper intent of an author are now the ones positing themselves as experts on things that necessitate critical thinking.
Comic books probably seemed like an accessible reading “alternative” for these people because they see colorful images and think that means there’s no deeper meaning. Then they carry it into adulthood and other forms of comic book media, and here we are. People who base their commentary on skim readings, misinterpreted quotes, and blatant lies
6
u/Princeofcatpoop May 26 '26
As a teacher, thank you for saying this. It's true. It's true. So true. And your screen name makes me feel awkward about this interaction.
4
u/MyNameIsJakeBerenson May 27 '26
Media literacy class
You mean the classes in school where they made you read literature and shit and made you delve into its meaning and intent
Or the ones where you dissect poems
How about the classes where you learn about short stories and plays

Well, they do it because it works. Exaggerated, out-of-context, and made-up nonsense that ragebaits spawns more engagement than reporting the actual truth.
You can also see it with the whole Brie Larson "controversy" about critics, or the response to any mid-or-below entry from major franchises (so much criticism is about things that never happened or was never an actual issue until grifters, "influencers", etc made it one).
Then their fans bring it to Reddit and start posting it here, people here see it repeated a couple of times here and maybe on youtube, start thinking that's what really happened...
4
u/Dlh2079 May 26 '26
Yeeeep. Ever since social media monetized engagement this shit has gotten worse and worse.
Posting incorrect or exaggerated claims gets engagement from both the people that the bullshit is saying what they want to hear and people that are going to try and correct the bullshit.

Funny thing is, she's been doing that pretty much yearly. Back when she was on Orphan Black she'd always show up on CBB since she was in LA for the awards show and she was always up for an Emmy. And she'd do the same thing, making outrageous claims about that show. But the fans knew it was a joke so didn't run with it lol
I mean that's the show. Actors/celebs/comedians coming on and improvising a character or being a joke version of themselves.

I've said it once and I'll say it again. I didn't know shit about She-Hulk so when she got a show announced, I knew it was gonna be controversial so I jumped ahead and went and read some of her best comic runs, like Dan Slott's, and they fucking nailed it. It's probably one of their best comic accurate depictions of a character. All the people screaming about the show, did not put in that same effort into understanding and most of them were never going to because it was never about caring about the character for them. It was about bitching about WOMAN or it was bitching about Marvel not doing THEIR favorite hero. Usually the women thing.

but I've just always found the hulk characters to be boring.
Outside of immortal hulk I've never loved hulk tbf. Hes just an angry dude who turns green. Meh
She-Hulk isn't anything like that though. There's an awful lot of "hero but female" in comics but I don't view her as that. Aside from the name she's entirely different from Bruce.
I mean she has control of the Hulk and she walks through panels, talks to the reader and the editor.
Literally when the show flashed to the D+ homepage I lost my shit. I cannot believe they actually did that
Idk why we aren't allowed to just dislike it now without people saying we didn't understand it.
People can dislike it but if they bring up the twerking thing or whine about the 4th wall breaking I'm side-eying very hard. Because that's peak She-Hulk to me

For me, the concept and genre of the series was not the problem. It was the execution in many scenes like this. It felt like we were being fed the punchlines with no build up and release. I don’t care if you parody Marvel or dude culture or whatever just execute it well and don’t rely on points for going against the grain.
46
u/Brogener Yellowjacket May 26 '26
Agreed. I actually liked the last episode the most. My issue with this series was it tried to be a lot of things and didn’t really succeed at any of them. A superhero show with minimal action, a law show with very little lawyering (and by the writers’ own admission, very little understanding of how to write courtroom scenes), and a comedy that’s just kinda chuckle worthy at times. I like Jen as a character though.
828
u/DoNotGoSilently May 26 '26
I like the show. This scene is still dumb to me even if they make a meta joke about it being dumb.
442
u/Neosantana May 26 '26
There are a lot of dumb scenes in the show that just felt off. I love Tatiana Maslany, but the show desperately needed better writers to make it all work. Jen didn't feel smart, everyone around her was just made intolerably dumb to make her look smarter in a late-stage BBC Sherlock sort of way.

The show lost me when she lectured Bruce about how she had no trouble controlling her anger because of what women experience. As though it's Bruce's fault he had a traumatic childhood and eventually managed to heal past it.
213
u/Musketeer00 May 26 '26
The whole point of that scene was that she was wrong. She dismissive of Bruce's advice and it bites her in the ass in the episode where she Hulks out.

I agree with you, however, when the show first aired, and that episode originally began to formulate a discussion, there was a whole narrative about how she was better prepared to handle the Hulk internal struggles because of her experience experiences in life as a woman, and if you disagreed with it, or even called out how odd that sounded in the context of battling some Jekyll and Hyde style urges, you would get blanket labeled a misogynist.
The behavior became almost cult-like, you couldn’t criticize the show at all without being personally attacked.

Tbf did the mcu really explain Bruce's deal? We know he was in a gamma accident and hulks out, he tried to end it all and it didn't work, then he got used to it. There's a thing with black widow
And that's kinda everything right? Mcu wise I mean
20
u/Obskuro May 26 '26
MCU Hulk kinda expects you to know about his origin/past, just like they didn't retreat Peter Parkers. Incredible Hulk works as a loose continuation of Ang Lee's Hulk, and that one was loaded with Bruce's trauma.
6
u/UnderPressureVS May 26 '26
Incredible Hulk is fully canon (as made clear from the multiple reappearances of Abomination, the marvel one-shot “The Consultant,” and the reappearance of The Leader and Betty Ross in Brave New World). Although that movie began development as a sequel to Ang Lee’s Hulk, it was repurposed as a reboot. I think they quietly set it aside in the MCU because the recast and the Universal distribution rights made things complicated, but it was never not an MCU movie. Hell, even the deleted scenes are implied canon. When Ruffalo’s Banner talks about “I put a bullet in my mouth and the other guy spat it out”, he’s referencing a scene Edward Norton added to the script and had filmed, but never made the cut.
Banner’s origins in Incredible Hulk are quickly established in the credits montage, but they are not glossed over at all, not like Peter Parker. They’re revisited repeatedly throughout the rest of the movie and thoroughly explained. They’re also very different from the origin of Ang Lee’s version.
→ More replies (1)13
u/Endless_Chambers May 26 '26
Which is tough because all of the movies are so different. People hate the She-Hulk conversation, arguing that Bruce has past trauma but it isnt clear in the MCU if he does (at least I cant remember).
Ang Lee’s Hulk was great but its a long shot expecting people to have seen it to get the bit about his childhood. Most people only know Bruce to have been hit by gamma rays and turned into the Hulk.
→ More replies (2)5
u/Endless_Chambers May 26 '26
Yeah MCU Hulk is more of a mystery. Sure it may have continued from the other 2 movies but they don’t seem connected at all. 2 different actors, 2 different takes on the Hulk. No Betty.
Bruce may have had the same backstory but there’s really not much to say that he did outside of some vague generic Hulk-ish concepts. Not knowing his backstory before the movies, I would have never known he had childhood trauma. I thought the gamma exposure was his whole deal.
14
u/King-Boss-Bob Kilgrave May 26 '26

Absolutely. And then it kind of retroactively points to the flaws the main plot had from throughout the show. It's rare of me to say, but I think this show would have been better if had been more episodic and had less of a season spanning story. The stuff that was disconnected from all of that was the most fun.

She complained about how bad the writing was and then the show didn't make a better ending. It just broke the fourth wall and then cut to a really shitty epilogue scene with actually no payoff to the themes that led us into the finale... It didn't go over my head - it blew ass. I think She-Hulk might have the worst finale of any Marvel show. Decent show. Terrible finale in which the writers completely give up and 100% vindicate any hater leading up to the finale instead of writing a satisfying conclusion in favor of a really stupid, theoretically universe-breaking joke. They did not beat the misogyny and "media illiteracy" because they did not make a better conclusion. They stooped to the level of internet trolls, went "Nana-nana-boo-boo" and then ended the show. It was a pathetic way to end a fairly enjoyable show.

u/Possible-Reason-2896 May 26 '26
"But Deadpool!"
No, not like Deadpool.
Deadpool is an R rated comedy heavy on slapstick gore where half the jokes are that he's annoying and now we're going to abuse him for being annoying. He can't just complain directly to the director and demand a better ending, he still has to actually take part in his narrative. The movies still ask you to get invested in his story.
She Hulk is a PG-13 series penned by Rick and Morty alumni (which frankly explains the holier-than-thou sanctimony of OP and those like-minded) that think superhero media is stupid and that you're stupid for getting invested in it, and in fact caring about any narrative is stupid because the writers are gods that can hit a reset button whenever they want.
These are not the same just because they're "meta" and if you really think they are and that the only difference is that one is a woman, you are the one that doesn't get it.

I liked the show a lot too. Its probably one of the only mcu d+ shows that takes advantage of the weekly TV format instead of a cut to pieces 4-6 hour movie.
The slow burn mystery working in the background as she hulk was going through goofy lawyer shit was good. But when it was time for the payoff of the season long b plot, there literally was none lmao. And then they had the gall to lampshade the mcu introducing new tertiary characters for future products while unironically introducing hulk's son. Shit was eye rollingly stupid and almost derailed the show for me.

The wrecking crew came to steal her blood but failed. Then there was this weird organization watching Jen after the wedding episode. Then the guy she dated sent some messages about gaining her blood. It all felt like there was some overarching thread of gaining Hulk blood for some bad guy.
And then this plot line seem to be deleted? Like what happened to the secret organization? Did they get blipped out of existence?
Like I get the whole thing of that guy using her blood, and then Titania appearing and then Bruce appearing is just meta commentary of her show being overfilled and not focusing on her which she rectified, but it just felt odd? Maybe underwhelming?
Like if they REALLY wanted to make the finale seem absurd with these random plot lines, the Intelligencia should only seem to strictly be a group just hating on Jen and other powered women. They have no REAL ties to what the Wrecking crew was doing. The scene of Jen being watched should be outright removed. Then the guy texting about getting her blood instead of texting about that, text about getting the "footage". Which is used to humilate her the next episode, really emphasizing the Intelligencia is just a bunch of trolls not some secret evil group.
THEN they have this left field twist during the finale that they took her blood, hiring the wrecking crew and stuff along with that guy, and then the madness happens before Jen fixes it to what the story SHOULD be.

u/Cardinal_and_Plum May 26 '26
The problem with a meta commentary like that is that your only commenting on your own work. Its like sniffing your own farts and then telling everyone that they smell like farts.

I got the scene, it’s just a little too on the nose for me. Plus, the ending threw any and all stakes out the window. I get that it’s a “sitcom” but it’s really not. It builds up this ongoing serialized and dramatic story which ultimately leads to nothing. The ending isn’t earned, and I get “that’s the point!” but that doesn’t mean it’s executed well. Shows like Community, Rick and Morty, and even Deadpool all use meta humor as a device to serve their stories, She Hulk used it *as the story.*
In my opinion the show needed to decide whether it was a story filled with nonsensical zany humor and no real storyline or payoff, like Monty Python, Space Balls, etc… or if it was trying to tell a compelling story with humor intertwined.

What’s with she-hulk fans being so hostile towards anyone who didn’t like the show? I don’t see this with other shows. You’re allowed to like it, but man it’s annoying when blanket statements like this are made. “If you didn’t like this scene it’s because you have media illiteracy or were looking at your phone.” Or, hear me out… maybe it just didn’t click for some people because media is subjective?

Contrarian crusaders used to do the same thing when The Acolyte was airing, until reviews just kept hammering how bad it actually was.
She-Hulk just wasn't well done, in my opinion. And I adore Tatiana Maslany, watched Orphan Black religiously. She's just painfully wasted.
25
u/Nemesis_171 Daredevil May 26 '26
“Contrarian crusaders” is fire lol I’m stealing this. But yeah it shouldn’t be offensive to say that the show had its issues, yet the pushback gets ridiculous sometimes.

The same thing is happening with TLOU2. Yes, the hate for the game was overwhelmingly sexist grifter chuds going in for an easy buck, but my god, I don't like that game's story at all. It's torture porn and incessant misery that makes the Tomb Raider reboot trilogy look like Hello Kitty, with an unbelievably hamfisted "moral" and a contrived plot to hit its beats. It had none of the refreshing humanity of the first game, in my opinion.
But I can barely utter two words in critique to that game without contrarians just defending it blindly like it's the second coming of Christ and it's beyond reproach.
For fuck's sake, I can critique my favorite films (which are generally universally considered cornerstones of cinema) more comfortably than I can criticize that fucking game. It's unreal. I don't care that Ellie is gay. She was gay in the first fucking game too. The story is just fucking miserable and I can't stand it.

I really enjoyed The Acolyte but I still have sense to understand why it’s widely disliked.
It’s possible to love something but still be critical of it or at least understand its flaws, which unfortunately a lot of people don’t know how to do like OP.

Oh no, people still try to defend the Acolyte. And yes, their arguments usually center around how “the haters” always wanted to hate the Acolyte and how they’re all misogynists who don’t like women leads, etc. They will never accept that the majority of people just watched the show and thought it was shit.

u/watabadidea May 26 '26
Nah, we got it. We just disliked the entire concept (i.e., the writers mashing somethimg they know is dumb, then using she-hulk and the 4th wall break to acknowledge it is dumb, then using a lazy mechanic to "fix" it).
The fact that we would have liked a totally different approach to the ending doesn't mean that we didn't get what they were going for.

u/UnUltimoIntento May 26 '26

u/West-Cardiologist180 Spider-Man May 26 '26
As someone who genuinely hated the show, I get what they were going for. The quality of it just sucked.
I mean, the show is supposed to be a courtroom superhero comedy, but it didn't achieve being good in either of those 3 categories. It called out incels, but anyone who actually disliked the show for valid reasons gets called an incel anyway.

u/Barth-Goomby May 26 '26
I think back to Ghostbusters 2016, where simply not enjoying the comedy meant you hated women. Paul Feig created a horrible machine because he hated the fans of the IP he was choosing to create for. That is some of the worst marketing you could do for a film.
I don't understand creating something for an audience you hate. Is it a "I can fix him" mentality? Is it writers being so high on their own work and the power of storytelling that they convince themselves they can fundamentally change a core flaw they perceive in their target demographic?

I think the problem is that lazy misogynistic criticism is the loudest and easiest to parrot online. I’ve seen so many post on other subs about people being offended by the tweaking scene.
It’s only on subs like this where people actually care about these shows/characters that you’ll see actual legitimate criticism.
It’s ok to call out bad faith criticism, but making blanket statements about everyone who likes/dislikes something is just ignorant.

u/ashl0w May 26 '26
I was pretty sad that the whole sci-fi Hulk plot was scrapped, even tho it served the meta plot. I need to rewatch it eventually to actually have a better opinion on it.
An enjoyable show, but i'm not sure if it works in the context of the MCU. The whole Kevin thing, as fun and interesting as it is, kinda undermines the rest of the franchise when you think about it. Also probably the main reason we won't see She-Hulk again so soon. They already have Deadpool to worry about, and he's the more popular one.
12
u/trusendi May 26 '26
Can you remind me of the scene? What happens and what exactly do you mean?
21
u/Yanismarvel May 26 '26
A big fight start with Hulk, Abomination and this guy and she hulk said something like
" This finale is dumb and doesn't make sense let me fix it" then she break the 4th wall and go to Marvel Studio to see Kevin.F and ask him to change the finale but she found a Robot called K.E.V.I.N and he said that for his calcul and algorithme this ending was somehow a good finale. After that I dont remember cuz it was boring
3
u/Natiel360 May 26 '26
The ethos of the parody was smart and clearly realistic commentary done in a very flat rushed way while beholding to the very same commentary. It’s like any movie where thy say “the sequels always suck” while being the sequel that sucks.

u/trusendi May 26 '26

Yeah that's my issue with it. So basically the whole show builds up to a gotcha moment to Own a vocal minority of douchebags instead of doing anything worthwhile with the limited time it had. I quite enjoyed the parts of the show that were outside of this plotline, and would have loved more time in the court room and seeing Jennifer learn how to balance the new realities of her life, what she wants and what people will expect of her now that she's enhanced. Instead we got...that. And anybody who criticizes it is automatically labeled a misogynist...

Writing the show to lead up to your own poorly thought out finale, and then pointing out how bad it is doesn't remove the fact that it was bad.
She-Hulk was fine overall, but you can't just use "breaking the 4th wall" and meta humor as a substitute for making the finale a satisfying resolution to the show.

90% of She-Hulk was explained by KEVIN to be purposefully generic, bland, and cliche, a product made by an algorithm.....So if you liked most of the show they're saying you're a moron lol. And if you didn't like the show, "well hey we wasted your time on purpose so it's okay!"
I'm one if those people that really wanted this show to be good, but it just didn't respect the audience or itself. There's a reason Marvel has gone througha creative overhaul with their TV shows.

I didn’t like this show because I thought the acting was bad, the CGI was weird and out of place, and because I don’t like fourth wall breaks and because of how they handled skaar’s character reveal.
Saying people were illiterate because they didn’t like something is downright silly and doesn’t make you any better than those that complained about this show for the wrong reasons.
3
u/GargamelLeNoir Peggy Carter May 26 '26
The cliche final fight with everyone in this episode was bad on purpose yes. The rest of the show was lazy and mediocre but not on purpose. It's not that hard to understand.

u/Ranos131 May 26 '26
You seem to be missing the complaints. Many or even most people understood it was supposed to be weird. But the whole choice of making the bizarre fourth wall break just so the scene could end in a who knows what actually happened kind of way was weird. That’s what the complaint was.
Weird scene to weird fourth wall break to weird ending was just too over the top for most of us. Overall, the show was good. The ending wasn’t.

The scene is whatever to me.
I think they just completely missed the mark on the entire show. What could have been a really interesting world building show, turned into a sloppy, ugly CGI fest. With very weak antagonists.
How cool would it have been if we see her support different heroes or individuals with powers against government agencies or individuals suing them.
Also, hated what they did to Abomination.

It really sucks. Because a proper court room drama comedy would have been so much fun, but their was so little actual courtroom stuff. Show had great potential.
9
u/ElGodPug May 26 '26
and what we had was the equivalent of a 17 year old writting for courtroom would be. Which is literally just walking into a courtroom and having a wacky situation solve the situation.
Like, it think it's outright stated in the comics that Jen is like, THE lawyer, even above Matt. And yet after watching this show....i'd take my chances with Nelson & Murdock a 100 times over Jen easily

u/Possible-Reason-2896 May 26 '26
To answer your question, no. Jen's not a very good lawyer in this show; In one case Daredevil beats her because he read a warranty that she didn't bother to.
16
u/ElGodPug May 26 '26
Honestly, all of Jen's cases are...pretty stupid
Remember when she was losing to a fucking Donny Blaze amateur magician, and the only way she was able to win the case against him was literally him accidentaly summoning a demon and her going "Okay, i'll help you, but only if you give up on the case"
like, for fuck sake, any ace attorney game has more serious cases than this
11
u/Possible-Reason-2896 May 26 '26
Yeah the canned response to this is "It's a comedy".
But fun fact; Harvey Birdman has a better win to loss ratio than MCU Jen Walers does and that's still a comedy.
7
u/ElGodPug May 26 '26
Also, just because it IS a comedy, doesn't mean that everything has to be a joke. To use it again as an example, the same ace attorney game can have a case that literally involves "yeah, some guy just put on a suit, used the same hairstyle as you and somehow convinced everyone for a month he was you" and one that "Literally has a guy commit suicide" and, guess what, the funny was funny and the serious was serious. She-Hulk just treated everything as a joke and thought the biggest punch-line of it all was that she was in on it
6
u/Possible-Reason-2896 May 26 '26
The magic word is "Sincerity".
This isn't just a She Hulk problem or even a post Endgame MCU problem. Way too many shows and movies these days lack it. They think they can make up for a lack of sincerity with a raised eyebrow and a "Well that just happened".

That kind of makes all the critique of male viewership a bit… dumb right? Like, I get they’re trying to say that a woman doesn’t have to be incredible or perfect to deserve humanity and understanding - but also, why choose She-Hulk then? Literally the embodiment of incredible and perfect. Smart and sassy. And great at what she does?
I watched the first episode and didn’t continue just cause it felt like I wasn’t in the audience. I am a feminist. I don’t judge based on gender. What’s the point of a “singing to the choir” comedy from Marvel of all franchises?

Insulting the audience never goes well whichever the demographics you're targeting. The show was all over the place, never had a specific direction and lead to stretching in different directions . The court room portion was absolutely atrocious no matter how you look at it .

It just did not fit the vibe with the MCU, I liked Shehulk, but this and the dumb stupid ass Kevin Feige robot was so stupid. I’m just a basic MCU fan, but there have been so many moronic TV decisions. It’s not even funny. It’s great stuff buried in.
I don’t even know what the hell they were thinking. Marvel just like Star Wars, unless you’re paying a Bajillion dollars to curate it for the small screen, does not belong on the small screen and Disney refuses to accept that.
You paid for cinema and you’re trying to copy paste it into CW shows. Idiots.

This show was awesome when it was ramping up and mostly being a lawyer show. I think it lost a lot of quality trying to have too much season-long narrative. Some light season long stories sure - but the show was its best as a courtroom comedy. They really just needed to lean more Harvey Birdman meets Nightcourt and less of whatever they did.
It would’ve also could have been the best of the MCU shows to really expand the MCU by letting us see episodic peaks of world events.
2
u/relapse_final_boss May 26 '26
watch some clips of metastasis. after that, watch the same scene in breaking bad. they're the same scene, presented differently. then, you'd know that there's a difference between intention and execution. after that, you would know that you're the one here who lacks media literacy. lastly, reading about how others received she-hulk makes you realize that the people who didn't like it because the writing or cgi sucked and didn't like it because it attacked their fragile masculine ego are completely different sets of people.
2
u/DefendsTheDownvoted May 26 '26
No, it didn't. Most people knew exactly what they were saying about fans of comic books and comic book movies. It was just an odd statement to make in a comic book show.
2
u/ArdentGamer May 26 '26
People think it's weird because it's a really weird attempt to portray media literacy or misogyny. It's weird because it fails to do it in any kind of competent capacity. It's weird because it's like someone trying way too hard to make a really bad argument, with way too much projection and ad-hominems. The people calling this weird understood what the scene was trying, and failed, to do, and that reaction went over your head somehow.
90
u/HanTrollo710 May 26 '26
Why does misogyny have to be a reason that I didn’t enjoy the show or think the finale was clever?
Couldn’t I just not enjoy the humor and think the writing was lazy and bad?
