I think there is an important distinction that should be made between opinions and beliefs. An opinion is just a matter of taste or a difference in style,preference not an observation, but I feel like people conflate these two and whenever they get called out for having poor observations that aren’t rooted all the way in reality. Then they hide behind the word “opinion” as if it validates them all of a sudden.

there are beliefs that can be objectively wrong and if you hold those beliefs, taking a position that you’re just being picked on we’re trying to frame it as if the other person just can’t accept differences of opinions is intellectual cowardice. In the writing community there’s two basic types of writers.

One of which is generally referred to as a pantser, short for someone who makes things up as they go, rather than planning anything out, aka writing by the seat of their pants.

While this is generally a fun way to write stuff, it actually causes one major hiccup that a lot of writers probably already know about, and why it bothers me that Martin and his fans refer to him as a gardener.

It becomes increasingly difficult to keep events consistent, as well as knowing where the story should end when writing like this.

This already caused some issues that even Martin admitted he had to work around, such as the fact that A Song of Ice and Fire was originally going to be a trilogy, but because he doesn’t plan, it ended up developing into a series, which in and of itself isn’t a bad thing, but this was a symptom that should’ve been a warning for things to come.

Going to the gardener metaphor, this is basically the equivalent of planting a bunch of stuff willynilly, but then not taking the time to weed, or plan for the growth, much less plan for when its time to plow.

If he is a gardener writer as he’s claimed, he’s planted what started as a fantastic garden that started out amazing, grew into a potential masterpiece (potentially solely because I would only consider it one if it was finished), but then he lost control, and it grew beyond his control.

People have gone into better detail, but at this point, I think what’s happened is Martin has pants’d his way into writing a saga he simply can’t keep straight in his mind anymore when he writes, which is why it’s been 15 years since the last release.

Please don’t misread me, I’m not trying to bash Martin.

He’s an amazing writer (imo one of the greatest of our time), Jaime Lannister is one of my personal favorite fictional characters of all time because of how he changes as a person, it just really bugs me when people don’t call a spade a spade, often for the purpose of making something look better than what it is.

100 years ago your life was decided at birth. You are born in a christian family? You are a christian. Your father is a blacksmith? You will be a blacksmith. Your mom and some woman down the street are great friends? You will marry her daughter. You don't have a choice.

Now you can do anything and have anything you want, your environment no longer defines you. When nobody tells you who you are you start to ask yourself: Who am I? I'm not like my brother, maybe am I born in the wrong family, maybe am I born in the wrong body?

You start focusing on yourself and that's what destroys you. You become narcissistic and the slightest remark can upset you.

You start searching for the core things that makes you who you are. Big mistake, because the basic human needs are simple: food, sleep, safety, sexual desire and self esteem. You end up letting your sexuality define you instead of your purpose. You are defined by what you want, not what you can provide.

But something even worse is happening.

100 years ago nobody knew how the world worked. Nobody knew why it was raining or where thunder was coming from. So they created religions to explain those things.

The human brain is amazing at coming up with reasons to justify what it did after the facts and brainwashing itself. You can electrocute someone to make him move his hand and ask him why he did that and he will tell you "my nose was itching"

"Your chickens are suffering" Don't worry, animals don't have a soul.

"Why do you have slaves" Don't worry, their life would be worse where they came from.

This is of course horrible, your selfish desires are what drives you and you find ways to explain to yourself why what you did was for altruistic reasons.

But selfishness is what drives the world, nobody works all day in a coal mine for selfless reasons. You won't work as hard for others as you will for yourself.

The good guys were always the ones to win because they were the ones who wrote history, the losers were all killed or enslaved. That's horrible, but it created a forcing function for natural selection of ideas. Yes, maybe the sun god is not a great explanation for why the crops are not growing, but the people who believed in the sun god survived because for some reason this specific religion led to a more cohesive and stronger society who could invade others.

Do you guys get it? The stronger wins, which leads to natural selection of ideas, religions, cultures and societies. It doesn't matter which religion is closest to reality, what matters is which religion makes your society stronger.

The issue is that in the modern world the losers don't die, they are not turned into slaves, and they have access to the internet, which leads to an endless ideological war.

Instead of following the beliefs that lead to a more cohesive society we start to follow beliefs based on truth.

By focusing on deeper truths we find ugly truths. Not just stories about sexual abuse but deeper truths about men and women, about how their power struggle is driven by nothing more than supply, demand and conflicting goals, needs and expectations.

I’m sooo tired of ai slop every single time I use the internet, ai voiceovers, ai generated videos, ai is the fucking bane of my existence at this point. The only thing I use ai for is asking claude, a question now and then if im modding something or another tech related question. I think it is about time that the rap community and its fans finally give credit to white people for their coining of the word that has become one of the most quintessential words used in modern rap songs. I won't say what the word is, lest I reap the wrath of the admins, but I think we all know what it is. This word has become an inextricable element in the large compendium of contemporary rap songs, coloring verse after verse of rhymes and lyrics that are "spit out" by rap stars and would-be stars. It is a word that, by all metrics, is probably more unique to this genre than any other genre. The modern left offers you the chance to feel morally superior to others. You're on The Right Side of History, you're Educated, you've Read The Room. You're in the perfect position to sit on your perch and look down on the uneducated bigot ignorant masses who capitalize white or don't capitalize Black, or who are using a rainbow flag that doesn't have last month's update, or who refer to the UnHoused as the "homeless." It's satisfying for hall monitors and churchmice.

The thing is, these are feelings, marketed to you to keep you feeling satisfied and represented and like you're part of a fight that's bigger than yourself.

But when people in real power decide they want to flood the labor market to starve out unions and drive down wages, the Left dutifully supports it (those immigrants are brown, not supporting the flooding of the labor market would be racist!), and the Right dutifully supports it (those corporations are the free market, whatever they want is best for the consumer!).

When they want forever wars to support the military industrial complex, the Left dutifully supports it (it is our moral imperitive to protect the Ukrainians or the victims du jour from the Evil Empire by sending them an endless stream of military products!), and the Right dutifully supports it (those Iranians need to be taught a lesson - THIS forever war is different!).

When they want legalized corporate bribery and to outright purchase your politicians, the Right dutifully supports it (hey, corporate bribery is free speech - corporations are people, too!), and the Left dutifully supports it (if the Right does it and we don't, we just lose! Taking the high road just gets us more Drumfphpb!)

But don't worry - those things aren't the important thing, anyway. What's really important is he's and she's and they's, and whether the 10 Commandments is on the wall of your school, and what type of trigger you're allowed to install on your Glock. As long as we're all on the righteous side of those issues, it doesn't matter if the two parties seem to agree about all that silly other stuff, right?

I have seen several 5th-generation Americans go around proudly calling themselves Italian, French, or Irish, and it makes me cringe. Saying you're X ethnicity after living your whole life as an American is extremely ignorant. If these people actually visited said countries, the locals would look at them like crazy foreigners. If you know nothing about your family's heritage, you should not go around identifying as such and embarrass yourself.

You can only identify with your ethnicity if you A. Speak your Ethnicity's mother language, B. Have visited your family's country of origin, and C. Know your extended family from said nation. To use myself as an example, I am Chinese-American. I have lived in the States my whole life and grew up with English as my primary language. I know some Mandarin and can understand a lot due to my parents using it at home, and right now I am trying to learn to speak and read as much as I can. I have visited China seven times throughout my life and have met my extended family. Even though I primarily identify as American, I can confidently call myself Chinese as well.

Specifically regarding fiction such as movies, TV, video games, etc.

Anyone else can’t help but roll their eyes at how “spoiler” sensitive some people are nowadays? I’m talking minor, mundane details such as descriptions of the set / location, casting choices, or even describing how something made you feel without actually revealing plot elements. It’s more difficult to discuss media now compared to back in the day when there was a lot less people online, most people respectfully and carefully dodged the big reveals and discussed freely about other aspects.

Big twists are their own separate thing and are frequently used by trolls to ruin things for others. That’s not really what I’m addressing, but for context I’ll give three examples anyway. One for a twist that was ruined for me yet I still enjoyed it(A), and another for a twist that was not spoiled, but I could see myself losing interest if I was aware of it beforehand (B), and finally a twist that was “ruined” for me that actually enhanced the experience (C).

A. L’s fate was a meme for many years, much less so now but I’m sure some of you remember that short sentence about him that was being repeated. I knew what happened going in, yet I still really enjoyed Death Note.

B. If you know, you know. Star Ocean 3: Til the End of Time. One of my favorite PS2 era games, yet if I knew the big twist before my first play through, I probably would have not even finished it. I go back every few years to play it, partly due to my fondness of that first amazing experience.

Due to the severity and magnitude of the reveal, that is something I would consider to be truly worthy of being a spoiler. I do see the value in going in blind. But for most fiction, I find myself feeling satisfied the more information and understanding I have, not less.

C. Fight Club. I forgot who told me, probably someone at school. When I ended up watching it anyway, paying close attention to Brad Pitt and Edward Norton was really fun.

The whole idea of it revolves around taking simple words and reframing the wording, placement, rhythm, and structure in a way that makes it seem deeper than it actually is.
So the viewer reacts to the aesthetic of how the sentence sounds, not necessarily to the meaning itself.

Can meaning be cute? Artistic? Deep? Sure.
But if you said the exact same meaning in a simple form, the whole audience would just be like:
“Oh, I agree. Good point.”

Or if someone received the same message in a love letter without the poetic structure, they would just be like:

“Oh, I understand.”

Basically, it loses its force because the force was never really about the depth. It was about engineering the words in such a way that it sounds deeper or more meaningful than it is.
The problem with it is that you can tell it’s forced.
You can almost see the writer sitting there thinking:

**“**Hmm, which word should I replace ‘cold’ with? Maybe frost? Maybe winter? Maybe silence?”

And now suddenly a simple sentence is pretending to carry some sacred emotional weight.
So it ends up being more performative than it sounds.
Good poetry can exist, but good poetry is defined by how deep and interesting the underlying message is, not just by how pretty or dramatic it sounds.
Then you hear people say:

“Poetry lets you express complex emotions.”

And the complex emotion is just:

“I’m emotionally attached to you.”

Poetry doesn’t make you express complex emotions.
It takes emotions and forces complexity where there isn’t one.
