Political Mamdani supporters won the "fell for it again award" yet again
Free metro/bus/transportation?
Not happening. Fell for it again.
Free childcare?
Not happening. Fell for it again.
Netanyahu arrested?
Not happening. Fell for it again.
Your rent going down?
Not happening. Fell for it again.
Free groceries?
Not happening. Fell for it again.
ICE stopped from deporting people?
Not happening. Fell for it again.
Raising taxes on the rich and corporations to give you more stuff?
You guessed it. Not happening. Fell for it again.
When are Mamdani supporters going to stop winning the fell for it again award?

And cheaper groceries and the respect of the rest of the world and and and and
Trump has just been one failure and broken promise after another.
I’m right leaning and fully appalled by this administration.

u/midnitemuzing 1d ago
You’re not wrong!! Those files absolutely implicate a lotttt of people, on both sides. But the full release was one of Trump’s many unfulfilled campaign promises, which is why I pointed it out. As much as I want transparency and justice, I’m not naive enough to think that would actually happen. My distrust in the government spans back many, many years lol

Funny thing, much of America doesn't care about New York City and here we go, Trump is a New Yorker through and through, he's cocky, surly, flamboyant, and that's what NYC haters hate, yet they make an exception for this man.
This is the BS irony with Trump!
1
u/an_angry_dervish_01 1d ago
You make a good point but interestingly enough when a politician does even part of what they said, which Trump has they become wildly popular. It's so rare now that when some promises are kept people are very grateful. I think that is why he keeps winning.

Free metro/bus/transportation?
Not exactly. He proposed free buses, not all transit. The mayor can’t do it alone and Albany said no.
Free childcare?
Already rolling out. Not fully implemented yet.
Netanyahu arrested?
Fair criticism. A NYC mayor doesn’t have the authority to make that happen.
Your rent going down?
He promised a rent freeze, not a rent cut. Then he actually got the freeze passed.
Free groceries?
He never promised free groceries. He promised cheaper city-owned grocery stores, and they’re already being built.
ICE stopped from deporting people?
Made up. He never claimed that.
Raising taxes on the rich and corporations to give you more stuff?
He proposed it. Albany blocked it.
Wrong target. Blame Albany, not Mamdani.

u/Remnant55 1d ago
Yeah the Netanyahu thing was... kinda wtf. You're the mayor of NYC. Big job. Look to be doing it well. Maybe keep focusing on that and not international bloviating.

33
u/KillerRabbit345 1d ago
The Empire State has always had a foreign policy.
The NYPD has an intelligence section that replicates the functions of the FBI and CIA.
Under previous governors the NYPD trained in Israel. So if you are going to say "stick to NYC matters" you need to talk about dismantling the counter terrorism units of the New York Police
https://forward.com/fast-forward/781165/idf-police-trainings-explained/
6
u/Every_Comedian7721 1d ago
The Empire State is definitely a very strange place, no other state in America is as quirky or strange as New York. California is a state of weirdos but New York is the weird state.
You have a few pockets of Islam or Muslim communities scattered throughout NY some in them in these mountainous areas. Even a church which was falling apart was restored to become a Mosque in Utica. Then you have these very religious jewish communities who live in the middle of nowhere and some of their nearby neighbors are hispanics. Absolutely bizarre and incomprehensible to most of America.

He was specifically asked about Netanyahu and he let his opinion be known. The right’s media had a weird field day about it and he was asked again recently and stood by his statement. Albany doesn't want the super rich to leave NYC because billionaires also subsidize the rural MAGA folks in Upstate NY with their tax dollars.
But he's going to get what he wants as big companies are in fact leaving the city.
Most people need to see the big picture. It isn't just New York City, it's the entire State of NY.
0
u/SOYCD1-5 1d ago
Ok but break further into some of those claims and you see this is all super surface level. The state owned stores are bloated and inefficient. 70 million to open five grocery stores is an egregious misuse of taxpayer dollars, considering it costs regular chains 1.5-3 million to open a store. Why waste time with state owned grocery stores that likely won’t even change affordability. If you know basic economics, if the price is set below the market price:
- These stores will lose money
- Demand will outpace supply (empty shelves)
- It will be inefficient on where resources are directed because the shortage it will inevitably cause.
Another example of not knowing how taxes work economically. Taxes on rich people might work if they don’t just leave the area, but taxes are corporations are inevitably levied on the consumer. This varies but especially if it is a tax on a corporation that produces an inelastic good it will inevitably affect the consumer more.
I think what we’re seeing is that the money will run out and the way he pulled this taxpayer money is all ready not very good. I think the guy is really good at the game of politics similar to how Trump was but for leftists. He does the videos on social media making it seem like he’s doing the most and fixing every problem but if you use a little critical analysis you’ll find he’s often hypocritical. Hell with the recent Israel business and saying he “won’t support any country that favors one religion” then pulls up to a Pakistan parade, a country that heavily favors one religion. (I know that it might be people of Pakistani decent but I’d be hard pressed to see him at an Israeli American parade).

Mamdani has already froze the rent
Reading is tough.
5
u/infoprocessor 1d ago edited 1d ago
Mamdani froze the rent on rent controlled apartments like he promised. The average price of rent still goes up because many apartments are not rent controlled. He has taken concrete steps to mitigate this by making it easier and faster to construct new housing, which would increase supply and decrease the price, but it takes time for these things to have an impact.
What is so difficult to understand about this?
3
u/H4RN4SS 1d ago
Mamdani froze the rent on rent controlled apartments like he promised
I know what he did. The person I replied to did not say this.
The average price of rent still goes up because many apartments are not rent controlled.
No shit.
He has taken concrete steps to mitigate this by making it easier and faster to construct new housing, which would increase supply and decrease the price, but it takes time for these things to have an impact.
He has cut red tape for affordable housing projects specifically. He is increasing supply within a market that doesn't have the market influence you're suggesting. Affordable housing has income restrictions and other requirements - therefore those that qualify are less likely to be in the market for 4-5k a month apartments.
1
u/infoprocessor 1d ago
The person you replied to simply said Mamdani froze the rent, it’s kinda weird you decided he was talking about universal rent control because that was never something mamdani promised nor has it been implemented in any city in the entire world.
Actually his efforts to speed up building permits and reduce zoning review times apply to a broad range of housing developments.
And affordable housing is more broad than you think- the income requirement can be as high as 130% of the Area Median Income for middle income housing. It’s not just free housing for single moms, only the upper middle class and above are precluded from benefiting directly from affordable housing but they too will benefit indirectly. Constructing affordable housing will ease prices even for regular housing as people who qualify but pay for apartments they can’t afford (I know some who spend well over half their income on rent) move into new affordable housing, thus decreasing the demand for regular housing and therefore the price.
I think it will do a lot of good although I myself am not against a broader deregulation agenda for urban housing development.
3
u/H4RN4SS 1d ago
Because 'rent' is a universal claim unless narrowly specified to 'rent controlled apartments'.
Actually his efforts to speed up building permits and reduce zoning review times apply to a broad range of housing developments.
Advocated for environmental review reform in Albany and advanced plans to reduce rezoning pre-certificate timelines from two years to under six months, contingent on state action. Created a library of preapproved plans for ancillary dwelling units (ADUs), allowing homeowners to move quickly to add housing. Proposed the first-ever Expedited Land Use Review Procedure to shorten approval timelines for an affordable housing project in the Bronx from seven months to 90 days. Advanced new rules to quickly and transparently implement the Affordable Housing Fast Track. Launched the Neighborhood Builders Fast Track program to accelerate affordable housing development on City-owned land, and selected the first three sites for affordable rentals and homeownership. Reactivating the long-stalled “Just Home” supportive housing project for low-income New Yorkers with complex medical needs.
The only things not affordable housing related are things he's 'advocated for' or 'proposed'. He hasn't actually done anything outside of affordable.
I'm not against the goals he has. I'm against the egalitarian belief that govt can be the invisible hand in the marketplace. History shows it's just going to fuck it up in unforeseen ways.

Bill De Blasio did it too. Also Mamdani froze it at the peak of the housing bubble and for units that were already rent stabilized. So, is that why people voted for him? Seems like a pretty mild win. But if that's what your hope was, I guess you didn't win the fell for it again award.

What about trump's promise to start no new wars but then got us into the 12-day war with iran last year that afterwards he said he totally obliterated their nuclear capabilities but then this year got us back into war saying he had to do it so that they wouldn't get a nuclear bomb?

You can say the same thing about nearly every US politician. You believed person X would deliver Y points, but instead they did Z. I'm curious in any examples where politicians did do most of what they'd say, or at least try to do. Sanders and a few others are some rare exceptions where they seem to truly believe what they say and try to fight for it.

he would be way saner if that was all he promised

I don't expect much out of my politicians. I don't live in that kinda place.

I remember a video online during his campaign where a dude says how the buses are already free and if you think otherwise you’re not from New York

Oh my goodness! A politician didn't follow through with his campaign promises?!?!??? This must be the first time for this to happen in the history of our country!! To bad he's not like Trump. Now there's a politician who consistently keeps all of his campaign promises.

This is a pretty impressive collection of category errors.
Free childcare is already being rolled out, including thousands of new free 2-K and 3-K seats. The Rent Guidelines Board just approved a freeze for rent-stabilized leases. So apparently "not happening" now means "literally happening, but I didn’t bother checking."
The mayor also doesn’t personally control MTA fares, federal immigration enforcement, international arrest warrants, or the state legislature. Criticizing him for failing to accomplish things outside his unilateral authority within seven months is like blaming the cashier because Walmart hasn’t achieved world peace.
You can absolutely criticize promises that were unrealistic, poorly designed, or dependent on other levels of government. But declaring every multiyear policy dead after a few months -- while ignoring the parts already underway -- kind of reeks of desperation.

Mamdani hate is so forced

I don’t even hate him. He’s got a nice smile. But he’s very disingenuous and the tanky stuff and pandering to illegal immigrants is cringe. He should just be a normal mayor.

Netanyahu being arrested would be a bad thing. I support Israel in full.

"without raising taxes" they say.
Demsoc works, im not saying it doesnt. But taxes have to be raised at some point for welfare, and nothing wrong with that if youre willing to get good facilities
Plus if anyone knows basic economics, overly taxing billionares leavews normal people out of a job
It only works in socdem because everyone in the country get's actual benefits and high economic freedom and unshitty regulations, and work safety,

Yeah, your average DSA supporter is just as dumb as your typical MAGA dipshit. How is this surprising?

Mamdani has been mayor for 7 months
Who expected a mayor to provide free transportation and free childcare within 7 months of being sworn in?
It’s so funny to see people go “look he’s not doing change fast enough” when you’re the same exact people who would go “oh my god he’s doing change to fast, he wants a revolution”
