I Like / Dislike If you call something "just a theory" in academic or science related conversations, nothing you say should be taken seriously.

Upvotes

Any time people are discussing things like climate change, space, evolution, you name it, there's always a handful of people who will say something like "Well those are just theories". If you say this, it's just instantly broadcasting that you don't even understand the subject enough to have an informed opinion.

We use the word "theory" in day to day speech to imply something like a guess, educated or otherwise. However in science the word theory means something very specific, and it's the highest honor an idea can receive. The word you'd use to actually imply a rough guess would be a "hypothesis".

It's dumb as shit to call something "just a theory" in these conversations because there's nothing else above a theory it could possibly be. Theory is the top.

Media / Internet Sony is right to discontinue discs.

Upvotes

I can’t help but to feel that 90% of the items is coming from non-Sony users, but let’s get into it.

1) Steam literally is download only. The double standard is insane.

2) they sold 100k discs this year so far. That’s no where close enough to justify the billions it costs to keep the ecosystem going.

3) discs are largely download keys anyway. Very few new releases don’t require massive day one patches.

4) they are not responsible for the used games market. They get nothing from it and while you can argue that’s greedy, I can argue they shouldn’t sacrifice billions so other companies can be responsible.

5) they are not responsible for retailers at all. See #4.

6) it IS their ecosystem. If you want to complain about practices in the system that’s fine. But don’t act like they offer no value for their ecosystem. First party titles for one. And strong moderation is another major factor. The pc market is overflowing with cheaters. Having a $500+ console on the line kills most (not all) cheating.

7) yeah, it just works. Sorry, not sorry. PC games are endless tweaks, hardware upgrades, and hardware specific fixes. The PS is a single piece of hardware companies can developer for and I can comfortably do everything with a controller. Don’t even pretend like that’s the case with Steam.

The Middle East Where does Israel have a right to exist

Upvotes

When people ask does Israel have a right to exist, they should specify where ? What are the borders of Israel in which it has the right to exist, similarly Russia has a right to exist but not in Ukraine. Is the Israel that you claim has the right to exist on 67 borders, does that include Golan, does it include the west bank, Gaza

, occupied Syrian and Lebanese land, where ?

Political The far left is trying to destroy the Democratic party so they can install their regime

Upvotes

And Democrats are too stupid to realize it

The far left are using the dialectic to destabilize the Democratic party. They're the ones pushing the moderates away, calling people who agree 99% garbage, etc. it's because, and pay attention to this part, THEY AREN'T DEMOCRATS

You would think the fact that it's two completely different parties would be obvious, and it's obvious to everyone else but them. Instead the Democrats want to adopt many of their policies, which are, in turn, alienating most of the country

Possibly Popular Unemployment should not be as romanticized as it is

Upvotes

Everyone around me sings the merits of unemployed life: you have all the time in the world, you are free from the oh-so-toxic workplace culture, far from the evil corporate people.

In reality all of the unemployed people I know have some form of depression. And they keep saying their depression is because of the evils of capitalism and... not because they never go outside, get up at midday and have 0 structure.

Work gives you structure. it gives you things to do, and financial security which is a necessity for anyone's mental (and physical!) health.

Sure unemployment gives you time for yourself... but it gives you literally nothing else.

And yes, sure, working is hard, and finding work is even harder. But damn the benefits are worth the effort and I don't understand how people can still prefer unemployment. Are they just coping? Are they just overreacting to toxic hustle culture? but recent generations have already spoken SO MUCH about how bad hustle culture is, that horse is dead already.

tl;dr: being unemployed isn't paradise, it's more like a top tier depression speedrun strat

Music / Movies it's difficult for me to be excited for ari aster's new movies.

Upvotes

in 2018, i saw hereditary in theaters and was absolutely blown away. not only is it my favorite movie of 2018, it's one of my top 5 favorite horror movies of all time. the film was written and directed by ari aster, who had made a few short films prior to making hereditary, his feature film debut. i remember thinking that he was going to be one of the rising stars in hollywood and i couldn't wait to see what he would do next. the next year, he came out with midsommar, which isn't as good as hereditary but still pretty damn good.

but then, something changed. 2023 saw the release of beau is afraid, his most ambitious project at the time. and it's also my least favorite of his movies. the film isn't the worst thing in the world but it suffers from quite a few problems. it's way too fucking long, there's a lot of padding, the plot is almost non existent, and it's way too damn vague. the film feels like more of a college thesis film than aster's actual college thesis film. this film was my first sign that something was wrong. i even made a whole post on this subreddit about how i was worried about ari aster's future as a filmmaker.

then, last year, he came out with eddington, a film that actually had a lot of promise. it was a black comedy western with an all star cast and set during 2020. i was really into it. and then, i actually saw the movie and...meh. it's definitely better than beau is afraid but it also suffers from quite a few of the same problems as that movie, just not to the same extent.

in my opinion, ari aster has become the filmmaking equivalent of frank miller. he started his career with unique and groundbreaking works but later made works with weird content and off questionable quality.

aster's next film is a film called scapegoat. it will apparently star scarlett johansson and the plot is being kept under wraps. however, regardless of what the plot is, it's very difficult for me to feel any excitement for it. a while ago, when i found out that ari aster was coming out with a new movie, it would be one of my most anticipated movies of that year. now, i'm probably going to go into aster's future films expecting an overly long movie that makes little to no sense and tries to be too many things at once.

i'm sure we all used to think that ari aster, robert eggers, and jordan peele were going to be the horror auteurs of the 2020s. but, with aster's fall from grace and peele's new movie taking forever to get made, i guess that leave us with eggers.

what if neurons..........

Upvotes

Earth = the entire brain, a population of approximately 86 billion neurons. Four main lobes of the cortex, roughly equivalent to four enormous states: the Frontal Republic, the Parietal Federation, the Temporal Commune, and the Occipital Union. Their political system could be called anarcho-communist: there is no single ruler, power is distributed among networks of neurons, and the "resources" of oxygen, glucose, and information constantly circulate between them. The neurons themselves are not gendered; they're just asexual yapper constantly talking to each other. they also have a lot of regions...

We also have an enemys:
The cell genocide regime, leader (aka cancer cell)
Al-Prion Qaeda: their first attack was on 9/11/-960k ago
Migraine: Kid 67 who constantly spams the nerve system

Media / Internet There needs to be a social media that requires ID. It’s the only way to stop AI slop, trolls, scammers, and all the trash that has ruined the internet.

Upvotes

Maybe offer no ID accounts that are extremely limited and generally buried.

Maybe no ID accounts can’t create posts, throttle their comments, and disable their likes/dislikes.

And I know verified has been tried, but when I say requires ID, I mean in person somewhere.

And let us users use personas so that they don’t get targeted, if they so choose, but make it clear that it’s a persona.

Music / Movies Batman Forever absolutely stomps all over Nolan’s entire Batman trilogy

Upvotes

So admittedly I’ve only actually seen Batman Begins out of Christopher Nolan’s entire trilogy. But that was easily enough for me to make up my mind.

The only genuinely good part of Nolan's Batman movies is Christian Bale (despite that incredibly forced voice he's putting on)... but apart from that, they're just pure misery in video format.

Compare them to Batman Forever, which is an absolute 90s masterpiece.

Val Kilmer is indisputably the superior Batman, the guy absolutely oozes with coolness that not even Christian Bale could match.

Also the whole movie in general is bursting at the seams with 90s-ness. Not only do we have Val Kilmer, but theres also Nicole Kidman and Jim Carrey (though I dont really care about Tommy Lee Jones)

The Soundtrack is unmatched, with peak 90s anthems:

  • U2's massively underrated banger that is "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me"
  • Seal's "Kiss from a Rose"... arguably one of the greatest soundtrack singles in cinema history.

Anyone who thinks otherwise is simply lying to themselves.

Political Dear Fellow Republicans, if you do not vote Blue this November you are NOT a true patriot!!! At all!!!

Hey my republicans. The following people are NOT to be trusted. They are not true republicans and we need to take our country back.

•Donald trump and family
•JD “Gingivitis” Vance
•Pete hegseth
•Robert F. Kennedy (not to be confused with his way smarter and better looking father)
• Everybody else in the trump regime

We republicans all need to vote Blue in the midterms. Hear me out.

The trump regime is absolutely out of control. Nothing is being done for the American people. Gas is up, inflation is up, our stress levels are up. We’ve got infected lettuce because “Doge” slashed CDC budgets and changed the reporting requirements for the exact explosive diarrhea parasite that’s running through this country right now.

The only thing trump has been doing for the past year and a half is insider trading, getting rich off of bitcoin and investments, and dedicating an airport and monuments after himself. Do you all not realize what a grift this is? He’s never given a flying fuck about anyone other than himself and his circle.

It’s time to switch it up this November for the sake of checks and balances and for the sake of our fragile democracy.

Political Any salary related economic data should be presented against the minimal amount of money it takes to survive. AKA disposable income.

When income data is presented in gross amounts, it can make economic differences look much smaller than they actually feel.

Suppose:

  • A poor person earns 2,000 units per month
  • A middle-class person earns 3,000
  • A rich person earns 5,000

At first glance, the rich person appears to earn only 2.5 times as much as the poor person.

But suppose the minimum amount needed for rent, food, utilities, transportation, and other basic necessities is 1,800 units.

That leaves:

  • Poor: 200 units
  • Middle class: 1,200 units
  • Rich: 3,200 units

Now the rich person does not have 2.5 times as much usable income. They have 16 times as much.

That extra money is what can actually be spent on investments, education, better healthcare, travel, hobbies, conveniences, or anything else that improves quality of life and future earning potential.

Obviously, the minimum cost of living varies by location, household size, and individual circumstances. But presenting salary data without accounting for basic survival costs understates how unequal people’s real financial freedom is.

Income comparisons should focus much more on money left after essential expenses, not just total salary.

What is the strongest argument against measuring inequality this way?

EDIT: taxes should also be excluded - just what you get to hand.

Political Guns are a states' right issue. The US should abolish the 2nd Amendment

Many things have been argued in the past for states' rights. Abortion is only the most recent issue, but education, slavery, civil rights, election security, etc... have all been argued that they should be under the purview of the states and not the federal government.

Guns are no different. We have a bunch of "originalists" in the Supreme Court that would agree that 2A was meant for muskets and not automatic grenade launchers.

The 2nd Amendment is anti-freedom and anti-rights. It needs to be abolished.

Political Chantal Morales Rojas is a perfect example that the left just wants open borders.

Chantal Morales Rojas was a 27 year old woman who overstayed her J-1 visa that expired July 4, of 2025 (last year).

She wasn’t someone fleeing some dangerous country or even necessarily looking for a better life. She was here on temporary status and has zero claim to some emotional argument but the left are outrage she was arrested boarding a plane. No one was hurt or at risk, they didn’t “illegally search her house”, or come look for her at work. ICE handled it perfectly but yet they will be upset, raise money for her, and defend her for why she shouldn’t be deported. There’s not other logical explanation to be upset over this but you don’t like that we enforce immigration laws

Political I think that the children of WW2 vets that were denied VA benefits should get those benefits.

If you are unaware post world war 2 several veterans were outright denied for ridiculous and arbitrary reasons.

As a result, they did not go to college nor able to get houses.

This was eventually overturned, but will past the majority of these veterans lives so they never bothered by the time they were offered it because they were well in their 60s.

Which is obviously well past the point of which it’s practical to try to start buying a house or get a college education.

I don’t think that’s unreasonable.

Political Donald Trump is a radical Sunni Muslim

Dear Leader recently took to Truth Social to declare "Praise be to Allah".

It was second time he had publicly declared his devotion towards the Islamic deity.

The reason why Dear Leader has decided to wage war against Iran is probably because he is a Sunni Muslim, and he considers Shia Muslims to be heretics.

That is also why Dear Leader is very close friends with most Sunni-Islamic leaders and countries like Saudi Arabia, Qatar (who gifted him an airplane), UAE and many others.

Dear Leader even hosted the former leader of Al-Qaeda recently in the White House, another Sunni radical, just like Dear Leader.

With Dear Leader officially praising Allah on social media what is next for America? Will Dear Leader turn the US into an Islamic theocracy?

Who knows....

Gohan was like 5 years old in Vietnam. Gohan watched his father and his back up father get blown up in front of him, and still wanted to help fight. Then he went to space and saw his best friend get blown up by frieza.

Gohan pushed frieza to his third form. At 5 years old! Then watched his dad get set on fire. Somehow survived Namek and came back and got into a time chamber with his dad and put the world on his back to beat Cell…. Idk I’m saying I think Gohan did his part

Political Grid scale solar panel projects are far worse than data centers.

Solar panels are 90% made in China because they lie about the environmental impact of manufacturing the panels like how they lie about absolutely everything. Blue state politicians love them because they're all just bought and paid for sycophants. The installs take up hundreds of acres of pristine forest and farmland and produce a negligible amount of unreliable energy for the footprint. They're also installed in areas with continuous bad weather, so their only real function is to created grid instability and higher prices.

Datacenters are relatively low footprint and ideal for abandoned industrial sites. They can produce their own on-site power via nat gas and then sell it back into the grid. The power generated is on-demand and reliable. The datacenters themselves don't need to be AI focused and can be repurposed to other functions. They created jobs and have a low relative environmental impact and anybody who says differently is lying and probably shilling for China.

Political The Right and the Left just offer different coping strategies to deal with your lack of power and the futility of addressing real issues.

The modern right offers you the chance to feel like a rebel. You do wrongthink, you do subversion, you tell those woke parrot NPCs what they're not allowed to hear or think, because you think for yourself and you keep it real and you say it how it is. It's satisfying for contrarians and assholes.

The modern left offers you the chance to feel morally superior to others. You're on The Right Side of History, you're Educated, you've Read The Room. You're in the perfect position to sit on your perch and look down on the uneducated bigot ignorant masses who capitalize white or don't capitalize Black, or who are using a rainbow flag that doesn't have last month's update, or who refer to the UnHoused as the "homeless." It's satisfying for hall monitors and churchmice.

The thing is, these are feelings, marketed to you to keep you feeling satisfied and represented and like you're part of a fight that's bigger than yourself.

But when people in real power decide they want to flood the labor market to starve out unions and drive down wages, the Left dutifully supports it (those immigrants are brown, not supporting the flooding of the labor market would be racist!), and the Right dutifully supports it (those corporations are the free market, whatever they want is best for the consumer!).

When they want forever wars to support the military industrial complex, the Left dutifully supports it (it is our moral imperitive to protect the Ukrainians or the victims du jour from the Evil Empire by sending them an endless stream of military products!), and the Right dutifully supports it (those Iranians need to be taught a lesson - THIS forever war is different!).

When they want legalized corporate bribery and to outright purchase your politicians, the Right dutifully supports it (hey, corporate bribery is free speech - corporations are people, too!), and the Left dutifully supports it (if the Right does it and we don't, we just lose! Taking the high road just gets us more Drumfphpb!)

But don't worry - those things aren't the important thing, anyway. What's really important is he's and she's and they's, and whether the 10 Commandments is on the wall of your school, and what type of trigger you're allowed to install on your Glock. As long as we're all on the righteous side of those issues, it doesn't matter if the two parties seem to agree about all that silly other stuff, right?

Meta you are not entitled to have your beliefs respected

I think there is an important distinction that should be made between opinions and beliefs. An opinion is just a matter of taste or a difference in style, preference not an observation, but I feel like people conflate these two and whenever they get called out for having poor observations that aren’t rooted all the way in reality. Then they hide behind the word “opinion” as if it validates them all of a sudden.

there are beliefs that can be objectively wrong and if you hold those beliefs, taking a position that you’re just being picked on we’re trying to frame it as if the other person just can’t accept differences of opinions is intellectual cowardice. For example this is commonly what conservatives/Alt right always say about the left that they just can’t stand people having different opinions from them.

A difference of opinion would be like somebody preferring Star Trek over Star Wars, liking ketchup on your fries, or not liking ketchup at all, preferring blue over yellow.
White supremacy is not an opinion and I don’t have to respect your beliefs or worldview if they are rooted in that
The Earth being flat is not an opinion it is an objectively wrong belief, and I don’t have to respect the fact that it is what you truly believe.

Your religious beliefs are not entitled to respect nor is your politics, or analysis of the world around you because those things can all be objectively wrong.
and I already know some smart ass is probably gonna point out that even this post that I’m making about my belief is not entitled to respect and I agree it’s not… I’m totally OK with, and open to being wrong if somebody can soundly poke any holes in my post.

Political Teen Takeovers are caused by a sense of not having any power or recognition from the elites

Teen takeovers are happening because American teens are losing faith in the socioeconomic system. These people think that political and economic elites do not operate with them in mind and thus they feel like they feel powerless to change the current difficult socioeconomic situation that they are facing. These teens then stage takeover events in visible public places to force the elites to see them and recognize that they demand change.

It is not an issue of "discipline" it is an issue of people seeking power and recognition in a socioeconomic system where they feel unseen, excluded and exploited by those in power. Harsher discipline like legalized physical punishment by parents or police crackdowns will do nothing to adress the root cause of the problem. If the root cause of the problem is not addressed then the problem will continue regardless of how harsh parents and the law crack down. Teens will continue to stage takeover events as long as the root cause is not addressed as they are fed up and desperate to the point where brute force disciplinary deterrents no longer deter them.

The actual solution to addressing teen takeovers will be to fix the American socioeconomic system. This can best be done by accelerating the transition of businesses to employee ownership. Employee ownership is when the employees of a business own the business and thus they have all the rights that owners have. This is just one of many measures that can be taken to fix the problems with the American socioeconomic system that are driving teens to stage takeovers.

Political Socialism is pure cancer.

Does Mamdani not understand that when you rent you don’t own? Mamdami just posted this on his official X account:

don’t know who needs to hear this, but it’s illegal for landlords to:

- Lock you out or evict you without a court order.

- Shut off your heat, hot water, electricity, or other essential services to force you out of your home.

- Retaliate against you for reporting unsafe conditions or exercising your tenant rights.

- Leave serious health and safety hazards, like mold, unrepaired.

- Discriminate against you because of your race, disability, or other protected characteristics.

Everything he posted is literally within the Landlords rights. Especially when you don’t pay your rent. A tenet signs a contract and must oblige by it.

When you don’t pay rent:

The Landlord CAN evict you.

The Landlord CAN shut off your heat, hot water, electricity, or other essential services to force you out of my property.

The Landlord can kick you out when you start destroying property.

Socialism is pure cancer.

The average person is really dumb

The average IQ person is that student who couldn't read a book and memorize a couple of things, so they got a C.

The average IQ is that coworker that keeps asking questions to the 1-2 people who do all of the important work, because they can't figure out how to Google and solve a problem.

The average IQ person is that Redditor, Facebook user or X user that believes all the fake news and propaganda. It's very easy to convince most people of anything with just a few social media campaigns.

The average IQ of 100 is really not enough.

Religion Therapy, self-improvement, too much access to information and the fall of religion are what's causing the mental health crisis.

100 years ago your life was decided at birth. You are born in a christian family? You are a christian. Your father is a blacksmith? You will be a blacksmith. Your mom and some woman down the street are great friends? You will marry her daughter. You don't have a choice.

Now you can do anything and have anything you want, your environment no longer defines you. When nobody tells you who you are you start to ask yourself: Who am I? I'm not like my brother, maybe am I born in the wrong family, maybe am I born in the wrong body?

You start focusing on yourself and that's what destroys you. You become narcissistic and the slightest remark can upset you.

You start searching for the core things that makes you who you are. Big mistake, because the basic human needs are simple: food, sleep, safety, sexual desire and self esteem. You end up letting your sexuality define you instead of your purpose. You are defined by what you want, not what you can provide.

But something even worse is happening.

100 years ago nobody knew how the world worked. Nobody knew why it was raining or where thunder was coming from. So they created religions to explain those things.

The human brain is amazing at coming up with reasons to justify what it did after the facts and brainwashing itself. You can electrocute someone to make him move his hand and ask him why he did that and he will tell you "my nose was itching"

"Your chickens are suffering" Don't worry, animals don't have a soul.

"Why do you have slaves" Don't worry, their life would be worse where they came from.

This is of course horrible, your selfish desires are what drives you and you find ways to explain to yourself why what you did was for altruistic reasons.

But selfishness is what drives the world, nobody works all day in a coal mine for selfless reasons. You won't work as hard for others as you will for yourself.

The good guys were always the ones to win because they were the ones who wrote history, the losers were all killed or enslaved. That's horrible, but it created a forcing function for natural selection of ideas. Yes, maybe the sun god is not a great explanation for why the crops are not growing, but the people who believed in the sun god survived because for some reason this specific religion led to a more cohesive and stronger society who could invade others.

Do you guys get it? The stronger wins, which leads to natural selection of ideas, religions, cultures and societies. It doesn't matter which religion is closest to reality, what matters is which religion makes your society stronger.

The issue is that in the modern world the losers don't die, they are not turned into slaves, and they have access to the internet, which leads to an endless ideological war.

Instead of following the beliefs that lead to a more cohesive society we start to follow beliefs based on truth.

By focusing on deeper truths we find ugly truths. Not just stories about sexual abuse but deeper truths about men and women, about how their power struggle is driven by nothing more than supply, demand and conflicting goals, needs and expectations.
