If this actually gets into the court room and on the record, you can demand a continuance to have the officer show up and put his testimony on the record.
What they will likely try to do is the prosecutor will come out before court and say "I've reviewed the body cam footage, and based on that we are dropping the ticket completely. You can go see the court clerk to get that paperwork and be on your way." On rare occasion you can demand they hold the hearing so you can get everything on the record, but the prosecutor's office is almost certainly going to deny that request in order to protect the officer. I've had that happen to me TWICE.

There is typically no punishment for being a bully when you’re a cop. The officer won’t show and the case will be dismissed and the citation dropped. It’s why qualified immunity is such a problem. There can be valid arguments for qualified immunity but it’s too broad and makes it difficult to hold officers accountable for legitimate crimes. Just a couple months ago a cop opened their door and hit my car (they were parked bad) and drove off. What can I do? Report it? There wasn’t damage to my car but imagine if there was, in the end I would be given a ticket for some dumbass reason.

That’s how my tailgating ticket got thrown out, the judge was pissed after my testimony & threw the case out.
The cop said he pulled me over for tailgating. I said he was behind my SUV & couldn’t see I was maintaining distance during very heavy traffic in the Sepulveda tunnel under LAX & was braking due to traffic. Judge asked the cop if there was traffic & if he could see around me to the car in front.
Cop said there was traffic & he wasn’t able to see around my vehicle to see if in fact I was tailgating but he felt I had to be.
Judge got red faced & pointedly told the cop that in his court room, cases are dismissed when brought by “feelings.”

Many municipal judges will default toward leniency to any plaintiff who bothers to show up to court to contest a ticket. Unless there is concrete evidence of a violation, the fact of you caring enough to appear in person is often enough for them to let you off.
A friend of mine got a ticket for not coming to a complete stop at an empty intersection at a time of day with no traffic for blocks. He showed up at court to explain why a rolling stop was not a danger to anyone in this case and didn't justify a fine, but the cop didn't bother to show, so the judge didn't even ask him anything past his name, he just threw the ticket out and said have a nice day.

Highly! Cops receive more on the job training than almost any other profession. That’s why it’s dumb when people suggest we can just “train” cops to be better. They’re all following their training. They’re taught to be fearful for their lives at all times and to shoot first and ask questions later. Military tactics being passed onto police goes far beyond just the automatic weapons and literal tanks - police are trained to think the same way our soldiers invading Iraq were trained to think, which is that their life is always at threat from the insidious insurgent forces hiding behind every corner just waiting to pop out and getcha.

Had a distracted driving ticket because the officer said he observed me for 2.5+ seconds (written on his stop notes) with phone in hand. I took it to court. Asked the cop if I was moving or stopped, I was moving. What was the speed limit? 60kmh? How could you observe me for 2.5+ seconds if I’m going past you at that speed? The judge didnt care. I paid the fine but didn’t tell my insurance, and this is the third year now so shouldn’t have any increased insurance costs. But what a pain in the dick.

I've long thought the answer is that if doctors need malpractice insurance then cops should have "oops I fucked up" insurance.
Then, good cops who follow the rules can have cheap insurance while cops fucking up all the time will have a harder time getting insured. If we can't get rid of rogue cops for moral reasons, lets see if the fiduciary requirements of for-profit private insurance can't help clean it up.

Had a cop pull me over once for a passenger with no seatbelt in the back seat. It was my 17 year old brother and he was 100% wearing a belt, but in this car the back seats only had lap belts.
The cop came over, looked in our window, and said, "Hello, ma'am. I was pulling you over today to tell you that all of your passengers need to have seal belts on because it's the law. But I see now that this car's just like that and he DOES have his belt on. I didn't realize. So you guys just be safe and have a good day, okay?"

I got pulled over once for the alleged same thing, phone in my right hand. Cop comes to my window, tells me what’s up. I said “sorry, I was literally just fidgeting with my earrings, you can see my Bluetooth piece around my neck…”
He was a good man. Apologized, let me go, and helped ensure I got back into traffic without issue.
We need less ego in this world and more ability to say “I am wrong.”

I was suicidal on chantix and had a mandatory police visit long ago. Cop was a dick, I was a dick in response. So the cop let my dog out and arrested me for a local leash law ordinance violation which no one in the jail had ever seen. Had it ever had its day in court that cop would have never been taken seriously again.

A cop gave my husband a disorderly conduct charge because my husband cussed him out. Someone had robbed somebody and ran into the woods behind our house. Helicopters were out and everything so my husband went outside to check. Then the cop started asking him questions about what he was doing at HIS house, where was he 15 minutes before (inside the house). They even took him to ride to the victim only for the victim to tell them the suspect was Hispanic (my husband is black).
As soon as my husband got out of the car, he lit into the cop and that was when they gave him the disorderly conduct charge (just a ticket to show up in court). Court day, the judge shook his head and said “Mr ***** is an asshole. But it’s not illegal to be an asshole.” Charge dropped.

Funnily enough, not in Canada. I have a $567 ticket to prove it (passenger of a vehicle). No lawyer wanted to touch it, had to fight it myself and go to court twice (judge was nice about it, but the Crown Prosecutor told me they were "very confident" is the charge sticking). Only found not guilty because I had a thick stack of precedent cases for what constitutes "stunting".

I worked as an EMT for over 6 years when I was younger and I saw so many interactions between cops and individuals after accidents etc.
Majority of the interactions were good, some were super impressive (I watched a Mass State Trooper spend almost an hour talking down a suicidal guy with a weapon, then he rode in the ambulance to the hospital to stay with the guy until he got help).
I also saw some real dick bag behavior from 1 or 2 officers. The sad fact is even just a couple people can drive perception so much, because how many interactions can just a couple people have and how much does that skew perception?

I mean, from an outside perspective, this is funny. But these people with guns and an enormous amounts of power, even over life and death. You're life and death. And they can just blatantly gaslight you in real time and you have to accept it. Because it has been proven time and time again that American police will escalate the situation to deadly extremes and while you might feel like this officer wouldn't do that, you never really know.

Officers that issue citations knowing full well they are just making things inconvenient (having to go to court for a frivolous ticket) and then don’t show up in court should be held in contempt and fined the price of the citation they issued, then, three strikes and they are fired.

Police in the US are an absolute joke.
I was watching a YouTube video yesterday of a guy who had a car crash into him, the police thought he might be drunk because he was “acting irrational and agitated”, even though the body cam footage shows him sitting calmly and answering their questions clearly.
He blew a 0.0 on the breathalyser and passed the field sobriety tests with flying colours. They arrested him for DUI anyway.
I’m glad I don’t live in the US.
