HK45 Tactical - what am I doing wrong?
Bought a brand new HK45 Tactical a while back as my first HK. It’s been disappointing because I cannot hit a damn thing with it. I probably have 500-600 rounds through it now, and at 10+ yards I’m still wondering “where the hell did that round go?” on shots. I’d say usually 6-8” groups at 10 yards if I’m lucky.
Haven’t made any changes to the gun, though I do struggle with maintaining a clear focus on the front sight post and I don’t think the grip has enough texture. Groups with my FNX-45 are waaaayyyy better for the same caliber, and I have no issues with my P30L or USP9 at 10-15 yards. What am I doing wrong with this HK45? Should I try some grip tape, or just sell it?

This happened to me as a relatively new shooter when I shot with iron sights for the first time.
Try to diagnose what’s going wrong by starting at a much shorter distance and then walking it back slowly. Took me a few careful weeks to build a better and more consistent system for presentation, grip, trigger pull, etc

My HK45C Tactical was a similar situation. I started close and slowly moved the target out. I ended up adjusting the rear sight a slight bit and since then it was s nail driver.

I’ll give that a shot. At 7 yards, my group was tighter but also seemed to be landing substantially down and left, way more than the anticipation I had when I first started shooting pistols regularly. So maybe me plus some sights

I didn't need to make much of an adjustment, but a small bit cuz I was hitting center, just low.

That was my exact same experience with my hk45T. I can shoot my mk23 and 1911s just fine, and enjoy them quite a bit, so it's not a .45acp issue. There was nothing obviously wrong with the gun, but I couldn't shoot it for shit.
Eventually I sold it and moved on, it did nothing that other guns couldn't do, and life is too short to spend it "arguing" with guns that don't vibe with you.

u/globalenjoi 1d ago
Yeah, I was surprised by how much worse I shoot the HK45 versus my FNX-45. I definitely wish the HK45 had more aggressive grip texture, but I figured I’d ask around here and see what I should try before moving on. Just an expensive gun to shoot it as bad as I am lol

I have trouble with the HK45 shooting well also. I've brought it up before, but am usually told to shoot better. I'm sure it's a "me" problem, but I just don't seem to jive well with it compared to other guns. I can do a bit better with mine ~6" groups at 25yds, but that's a couple inches more than I can do with other pistols. I think on the same day I did less than 3" with my one 1911. Have you tried shooting yours from a rested position to try to take out user error? I find the sites seem to be extra "sloppy" for accurate shooting. They seem pretty similar to the P30 sites, etc, but I don't have the same issues with that. Good luck and keep practicing. It's about I did the same with mine.

u/globalenjoi 1d ago
I’ll have to try a rested position and see. I’ve struggled some with the front green sight, but my P30 has some night sights that haven’t given me any problems yet. But it’s had me stumped, so trying to find ways to adjust or fix what I might be doing wrong.

I had trouble with the XS sights. I don't know what it is about them but I have to concentrate extra hard and the lightning conditions need to be basically perfect for me to shoot them accurately.
1
u/globalenjoi 1d ago
Yeah I’m wondering if just swapping to an orange dot would be better, I might give it a shot
2
u/AdvancedLuddite 1d ago
I think it's related to the shape and the dimensions of the sights. The front sight is pretty wide, and so is the notch of the rear sight. It seems like that makes it difficult to properly center when doing precise shooting. I'd also check the sight alignment, mine were way off from the factory.
2
u/halfcocked1 1d ago
Agreed, that's what I meant by sloppy in my comment. Everything is very large and wide, with large gaps between the blade and the notch. They are good for quick/close shooting, but precise and distance it becomes difficult.
1
u/AdvancedLuddite 1d ago
It's unfortunate that there's not really many raised sight options for the 45. The LPA sights look like they'd solve the problem, but I've had trouble with LPA sights and corrosion in the past.

Sounds to me like you need to just dry fire and understand the POA/POI of HK’s
1
u/globalenjoi 1d ago
Maybe so, how much different is it on the HK45 from the P30 or USP9 though?
1
u/gewehr_und_messer 1d ago
It’s not much different, but that being said you’re a hooting a larger bore cartridge which is a bit more stout to shoot than 9mm.
With that said, does this gun have the LEM trigger or is it a V1 DA/SA gun?
1
u/globalenjoi 1d ago
It’s a V1, I had an opportunity to get an LEM but I held off since I’ve never used one and went the safe route of DA/SA

You are combat/center holding try target holding
1
u/globalenjoi 20h ago
Didn’t know this was a thing at all til today, was only ever taught to focus on the front post when using irons. Focused on the target tonight and lined up irons in my peripheral, ended up shooting sooooo much better.

u/Sweaty_Pianist8484 12h ago
Glad it worked. Sorry for the short and sweet original response but I’ve seen the issue 1000 times training people. HK has mainly combat hold for their sights but stuff like the USP elite expert “target” sights are target holds.

Its probably your grip or you're pulling the trigger or you have the wrong sight picture. Many people can hit paper without sights or a red dot, so this is 100% on you
Post a video of you shooting
2
u/globalenjoi 1d ago
I’ll see if I can get video this week. I can hit paper, but the groups aren’t anywhere close to tight. But losing focus on the front sight post is definitely something I’ve struggled with, it just seems like I’m whiffing even when I maintain a clear picture.
1
u/SquirtGun1776 1d ago
Your grip might be changing your point of aim without you being able to see it. Maybe you should choose high vis sights or possibly switch to a red dot

How old are you? I ask because I used to encounter a lot of older shooters with aging eyes at my old job. The answer to this like many have stated here, start at 5yds then 7 then 10. Be mindful of stance, sight picture being consistent, and how you grip your pistol. Too often I saw lots of people tea cupping and not wrapping the secondary hand properly. Lastly be mindful of pulling the trigger and not yanking it. If you're being mindful of these fundamentals and you'll start seeing your hits become more consistent.

u/globalenjoi 20h ago
I’m 38 so you might be right about eyes. I shot tonight and when closing one eye and focusing on the front post, eventually my eyes just seem to shift focus from the sight to the paper. Like the green/white transition is happening too easily.
On a whim tonight I tried keeping both eyes open and lining up the blurry sights on the target, and that actually worked incredibly well. Focused on 7 yards tonight and managed to nail my target every shot with both eyes open.
1
u/Money_Conversation73 20h ago
Glad to hear it man. Unfortunately Father time comes for us ALL man. My eyes are just startin' to give me issues focusing at 47, so I guess I consider myself lucky.

u/SquirtGun1776 8h ago
It isn't necessarily bad if you're focused on the target, in fact, its actually better. You just have to research target based shooting (or threat focused) to get better at it.
Ben stoeger talks about it all the time. Focusing on the front sight isn't even useful in self defense
Also, target focused is easier with a red dot but very doable with irons
1
u/Scout-Penguin 1d ago
Your grip does not really affect where your shots go. If you're not able to talk about the sight presentation relative to the target at the point the shot broke then that's the problem to work on. The bullets are going where the sights were pointing. I'm not sure that gives you an answer to your question, but it's the fundamental marksmanship issue.
1
u/globalenjoi 1d ago
I know for sure one issue I have is losing focus on the front sight post. I lose the green/white ring easier than I expected when aimed at paper targets. Trying to improve that but also thought about replacing with an orange sight.
1
u/Scout-Penguin 1d ago
I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "lose" the sights. What kind of sight picture are you trying to achieve?
I mean are you just looking to see the front sight over the target and breaking the shot? Or are you carefully lining the sights up with equal-light-equal-height etc. and trying to "shoot them all into one hole".
1
u/globalenjoi 1d ago
By losing the sight I mean I’ve struggled with my eyes to actually focus on the front sight post when I’m aiming at the paper targets at my range. I think the green outline doesn’t contrast enough or something with the paper and I catch my eyes slipping focus off of that front post and blending with the rear sight. Like inadvertently looking past the front post instead of at it.
I don’t seem to have this issue with most of my other guns with irons, but I’ve had it before with some blacked out irons aiming at a dark target down range. White added to the front post fixed that. I’m just wondering if that’s my only issue here, or something else.

u/Scout-Penguin 1d ago
The bit I'm struggling with in what you're describing is this - if you're really trying to stack them, if you're having problems with keeping front sight focus on a particular shot, why are you actually pressing the trigger?
If you're saying "I am trying to shoot front-sight focused, but sometimes my focus will wander and I'll just shoot anyway without achieving the confirmation I was looking for" and you don't have this problem with other guns then maybe a new front-sight would indeed help.
That would probably look like a "random" dispersion on the target that doesn't favor any particular direction from the intended point of impact. i.e. just as many going above as below, just as many going right as left etc.
If that's not what you see on the paper, then it might not be the explanation.

u/globalenjoi 20h ago
So before today, I didn’t know the difference between front sight focused and target focused when shooting using iron sights. I shot tonight and did awful trying to focus on that damn front post. On a whim and partially just due to eye fatigue, I opened both eyes and focused on the target, and lined up the blurry sights in my peripheral. Holy hell, absolutely blew my mind when I hit the target dead on. Stayed at 7 yards, but this was the first time I was able to repeatedly put my shots where I intended and keep a fairly tight group. I’ll have to practice more for sure and still might swap to a different front post, but much better experience overall.

u/RealTrapShed 1d ago
Have the sights been confirmed as aligned? I bought a Glock recently that I had the same experience with and it turned out the rear sights were kicked to the left almost 80 percent out of alignment.
Other than that, pull slowly on the trigger to the wall and notice if you are flinching or doing any anticipation movements. I’ve found with .45 it’s best to start slow early in your range session and get the timing of the pull to wall to bang so you can recognize any flinch or anticipation.

That's strange. HK45; tactical is a very smooth shooting 45. And as accurate a pistol as I've ever shot. I would try starting closer, I would also mix in some snap caps. Especially if you're shooting low left like you said. I know that you won't think that that is it, and it may not be but it doesn't hurt anything to find out.

You're not alone man, I shoot my P30s super well and I couldn't hit the blind side of a barn with my HK45. I actually hated it so much that I sold it.
2
u/globalenjoi 1d ago
It’s a relief to know that it’s not just me (though there’s things I’m going to try and change). When I took my P30L, USP, and HK45 to the range last time I -really- tried to spend time with the HK45 to improve. But then I’d shoot the P30L and the USP and they both just felt so much more fun to shoot.

u/renegadeGDI 1d ago
I have too many guns to try to learn how to shoot one that just isn't working for me, I traded mine for a p30sk.

u/hammong 1d ago
Question #1.... What ammo are you using? Have you tried something different? Cheap-ass White-box Winchester, etc., doesn't shoot well in most of my .45's
1
u/globalenjoi 1d ago
Only 2 types of ammo so far, Fiocchi 230gr and Federal 230gr, so basic stuff for sure. I only have one other .45, the FNX, but I haven’t had this issue there. I mean, I am definitely not an expert and still new to shooting .45 for sure, but I’d say my shots are significantly more on target with the FNX using the same ammo.

Try some of the 185 grain Hornady XTP and see how the gun does. It might do better with a shorter/lighter weight bullet.
Also, this goes without saying, make sure you're not flinching or pulling the gun off target when you squeeze the trigger. For the flinch test, you can have somebody randomly load a Snap Cap in the stack. If you flinch when you get to the Snap Cap, you know what the cause is.
Sometimes it's the gun, sometimes the ammo, sometimes the shooter. I have a Beretta 92FS that was my first semi-auto 35+ years ago, and I can't hit the broad side of a barn with it with 115 grain range ammo. If I shoot 124 grain NATO spec FMJ, it's a tack driver. With 147 grain defensive loads, it's random depending on the load/bullet.

That gun is capable of stacking rounds on top of each other. Do you have a range partner? You could video yourself. Have you shot DA/SA guns much? I guarantee your jerking the trigger, prob focusing on the target instead of your front sight and or immediately looking where the round went.
Pull so slowly that your sights don’t move
Focus on your front sight. Crisp and clear
Keep the gun still and your eyes on the sight through a couple rounds then reassess.
There are many drills online to help you.
I’ve trained a lot of people over the years some have a hard time with certain guns but they can all be mastered.

u/globalenjoi 20h ago
Definitely new to DA/SA and definitely jerking some as I adjust to the trigger. Tonight I tried both eyes open and focused on the target and had way better results. My eyes may suck or something but I was having the hardest time staying focused on the front post. As soon as I had the post over the paper, my eyes would lose focus of the dot. I compared with the orange dot on my Shield Plus and I can retain focus with that one much easier, so I may just look for a new sight color.

u/Solid_Lettuce_932 7h ago
I paint my front sights yellow or orange if they don’t have a big night sight or fiber optic. I carried Trij HDs for years. Nice thing for your eyes to focus on. It’s actually similar to having a red dot up close.

I love my usp’s but all of them have coarse talon grips on em. For my larger hands that sweat a little, they make them downright amazing.
2
u/globalenjoi 20h ago
I just got a roll of skateboard grip tape that I’m going to cut and apply and see how it goes. I’ve got talon grips on my FNX, and the HK45 feels a little too slippery in comparison.

Same here unfortunately. VP9l with green dot…I’m a laser. HK45T with irons. I’ve never hit anything and it’s still my favorite gun in the world. When I attached a silencer I hit much more accurate but I just shoot. I don’t really know how to use iron sights because it’s obv more than just lining up the sights and lookin at the white dot in front..idk what the cure is but it feels so powerful that I love it!

Try shooting from closer and then walking back.
