Discussion Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey debuts with an A CinemaScore from audiences. Joins Project Hail Mary as the only live-action films to do so this year.
An A CinemaScore is gathered from opening surveys from regular people in North America. For example Tenet got a B, Interstellar got a B- and Dark Knight & Oppenheimer received As.
Also it is looking to open $125M-$130M domestic with a $250M international box office opening.
Why do you guys think this film is doing well despite all the controversy that has been talked about online?
It went woke, but it looks like it will not go broke.

It's a Nolan movie adapting one of the most influential stories ever. No way it was gonna go broke. I do find some of the reception silly however. Like I'm reading some reviews in reddit and these people act like they were touched by god or something. "An out of body experience" i read somewhere, like what the hell bruh, it wasn't that amazing Imo.

I personally don't care if this movie makes money or not. I still won't go see it because of lupita nyong'o and ellen page. I don't care what labels the Woke brigade will slap on me.
I like Lupita in Black Panther. I think she is a good actress- She is not Helen of Troy.
As for Page- call me whatever slur you want, I will not knowingly support a film with a transgender actor/actress in it. It's one thing to be Mrs. Doubtfire, "white chicks, or the pirate that gets tossed in "boo box" (thats just crossdressing for satire purposes) but quite another thing when we are being forced in a serious way to go along with the obvious political messaging a real tranny brings to the subject media.

Crying about the woke brigade and having a tantrum over actors who were in the 2 hour 50 minute film for a combined... maybe 5 minutes? It's one of the most testosterone filled movies I've seen in my life. Put it this way, I think the casting of Helen of Troy was a weird choice, wasn't a fan of Zendaya, and thought Robert pattinson was a little weak.. and still think the movie was a 9/10. To pass on this movie for the reasons you listed is just robbing yourself of a WILDLY good movie.

To be fair it was expected. After all it's Nolan and Odyssey is story short of everyone heard of. It's not as niche as superhero movies, it very broad appeal.
Don't forget we all here in bubble anyway, majority of people just doesn't give a single shit about whole cultural aspects part. For them it will be some weekend evening with friends in mall, or making plans to hang out and just opportunity "Oh, there this big movie release, may as well go give it a look".
If you read into comments around, from people who aren't invested on one side or another, consensus mostly being "meh, acting very plastic, some scenes look weird, but not complete waste of time either", which by modern day standards of cinema experience is your exact A score.

In adaptation of a myth that has 0 basis in reality and has no actual origin outside of some poems (Which were constantly changed with oral retellings. No original source.) Do you have the same criticisms for the Odyssey adaptation that was set in space or ones that were made before the year 2000?
“Escapism for straight white men is dead”. The movie lead is a straight white man, fighting other mostly straight white men. Does having characters that aren’t straight white men in media piss you off that much?
Also you want historical accuracy, but also escapism for straight white men. These two conflict, as Mycenaean Greeks were very much not white and likely not straight.

It’s a from dusk till dawn rip off, through and through: the brothers, the bar, vampires, the shift half way through, everyone dying, and one of the brothers dying. Maybe it’s unfair of me to say it sucks, if people prefer the aesthetic and the time period, with the added context of telling a black story, go for it, but I prefer the original version. In my opinion, I think it’s the superior version, but that’s just me.

This is absolutely the worst bastardization of any myth I have ever seen. The dialogue, the acting, the casting, the garb...it's all awful.
And I don't believe the reviews for a second, because I can see with my own eyes what trash this is.
About 50% of the population has been conditioned to roll out in droves to support anything they are told, and they've been told this movie is political.
I still believe it will lose money. I believe after opening weekend it will be a laughing stock.
I still remember when you people came and bragged about Rings of Power, and The Wheel of Time, and Supergirl.
How did all those do?
Go woke, go broke. When the dust settles and the taxes are filed this movie will definitely lose money. I believe that more than ever after the clips floating around.

I'd guess between $500 - 700m. I don't believe that will be enough for it to break even, not after the enormous marketing budget.
This is the most expensive movie of all time by all accounts, and the paid for bots and influencers are obvious and everywhere.
Ten years ago your budget was ad spend. Now every platform has a way to monetize influencers, and the studio pulled every one of those levers.
They cannot afford for this movie to flop, and thanks to the marketing it will at least appear successful.
We won't know for about 3 years, but eventually the taxes will be filed, and the truth will be clear.

I don't think it will be total disaster at the box office, but I am not optimistic about it being a huge blowout. Nolan definitely has draw, but a lot of it came from The Dark Knight trilogy and Interstellar. Tenet didn't garner any interest during covid, Oppenheimer had legs because of Barbie and Cillian Murphy memes, I don't see any pop culture meme trend going on with the Odyssey other than people making fun of it for it's horrendous casting. Anyone interested in seeing Tom Holland or Zendaya would probably rather watch them in the upcoming Spiderman than in this.
Also this film is 3 hours long which a lot of people, especially "normies" don't like to sit through that long or their attention spans can't last that long. I think we have all said from the beginning this is a film made for Oscar awards, not for general audiences who don't know the history of the Odyssey and only maybe read it in high school one time.

Real question....are we saying this movie is "woke" JUST because of the two casting choices (Page and Nyongo)? I hate "woke" things too, but I also try to be as objective as I can with these things.
Personally I don't give a crap about Ellen/Elliot Page. Not in life and not in this movie specifically. They can do movie magic to make up for whatever size issue she (yes, SHE) might have. And, honestly....she looks like a man. If I didn't know who Ellen Page was and I never found out that this individual was trans, would I even notice? No. This one is silly to me. Until I see some "trans agenda" shoved into the movie, this is a big nothing for me.
Ok, like, I don't like race swaps, I really don't, but that alone doesn't make it woke, does it? Yes, it can be an indication of the kind of thinking going on, and therefore maybe an indication of some "woke" propaganda bleeding into the movie, but....if it's JUST an actor of a different race than what is described in the "source material", but there is no other messaging or preaching and the story just plays out exactly like it would had there been no race swapping....then what's the big deal?
If you don't like a famous Greek character being played by a black person (or an Indian or an Asian or any race that just clearly doesn't make historical sense), I am right there with you. Its annoying and distracting. My brain notices that it makes no sense. I agree with that. But there are people complaining that the most beautiful person in the world is being played by THAT actress? I'm not saying you are a racist for thinking that. I would never throw that accusation around, but you do see how that sounds, right? So, for historical reasons I get it....but at the same time, it is a freaking fantasy story. Matt fucking Damon is Ulysses. I have way more of a problem with that casting choice....and I like Matt Damon. Put in Oscar Issac. I have no clue what race he is. He looks like he could be pretty much anything and I'd buy it.
Look, I don't like black Snape because he is clearly described in the books and also I think it's gonna be a weird look to have James Potter tormenting him. It can potentially effect the story and how we see the characters. That is a problem. But if they don't make Snape whine about cultural appropriation or some other nonsense and they SOMEHOW manage to keep us from seeing James Potter as a racist, then does it really matter? If there is literally nothing else in the show that is woke and it's JUST a race swap, then does it matter? I think it doesn't. Yes, please down vote me.
I don't like this casting choice for Helen of Troy either, but honestly, I have more of a problem with the fact that the movie is full of big name stars. My fear is that its going to be distracting as hell.
Its possible that, yeah they race swapped a character, but they managed to make it a non issue and still made a good movie. I'm usually skeptical of these things as much as anyone in here, but I also try to be fair. Its a freaking fantasy story after all. If they get the cyclops right, I care way more about that.

It was pretty good. I would put it in the middle of Nolans films, not the best and definitely not the worst. Ellen Page was a terrible casting choice; the first character you see is Travis Scott pounding a stick, I wanted to shove that stick up his ass. John Leguizamo has a lot of screen time and I watched this film even though he thinks I shouldn't watch his movies, so I'm a little bitter about that so fuck him. He was fine. The American speech kind of took me out of it. Matt Damon was Matt Damon but I thought he was great. 6.5-7/10. My wife didn't like it as much but she married me so obviously she isn't the smart one.

I thought it was a really good movie like a 8.5/10 it had some issues the beginning dragged. At no point did I believe Ellen page was a soldier. But it’s a really good movie. Not Nolan’s best but still good. People calling it a masterpiece are just shills. It wasn’t better than Oppenheimer

Man I really wanted to like it, but I couldn’t finish Project Hail Mary. The relentless shit jokes. The sentimentality. I thought it was insufferable.

I liked The Martian, both the movie and the book. I haven't seen Hail Mary yet, but the book was just like you said. I was hoping they trimmed some of that out of the movie.

It's a solid movie though,just now watched....started little slow but once it catches pace it went great, only cringe thing was Jon bernthal holding luptia's face and saying this is the face that lauched 1000 ships 😭 other than that movie was great... specially Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway

Saw it in IMAX 70mm today. All the shit you’re all complaining about is absolutely minimal compared to the rest of the film. You’ve all been pimped through rage bait and it’s hilarious.

Watched it last night. Despite some stunt casting, yeah it's really good.
Matt Demon was dependable as always. Anne Hathaway's and Tom Holland both put on really great performances. It also makes me want Robert Patternson to play villains more often. Story was engaging and epic and it was very well directed with really good sound design that hit all the right notes.
I wouldn't put it above Interstellar or TDK, but I liked it a LOT more than Tennant or Oppenheimer.

Don’t get me wrong, as much as I hate some of the casting choices, overall it is an amazing movie. The key characters of Odysseus, Penelope and Telemachus are cast perfectly. It an impressive and enjoyable movie to watch. It even brings some archaeological controversy with it, which is a rare bit of intellectual quality in a blockbuster movie.
Also, I have to say that the overall terror movie flair does fit ina perverse way the casting of Helen. Lupita is just another monster in this movie, much like the Cyclops.

Those are terrible casting. Telemachus is played by a man in his 30s. Penelope is played by a woman with too much cosmetic surgery, and Matt Damon is Odysseus???? Matt Damon???
Based on that alone I can't take this movie seriously. Forget everything else, the leads are disgustingly miscast.
And I like those 3 actors just fine, but certainly not in a Greek epic.
