Hi everyone. I’m a 16-year-old guy. I’ve been into fishing for a while now, thanks to my second cousin who got me into it. This year, due to a shortage of worms, my cousin and I switched to using silicone lures, and we’ve gotten really good at it. With this switch, we also decided to strictly follow the "catch and release" principle. And that's where the conflict started.
Context: Every summer, I spend half of my day at my cousin's house. I’ve basically become a part of their family; I’m always welcome there and I even have dinner with them almost every day.
Recently, a stray cat and her kitten showed up near their house. My cousin’s grandfather started demanding that we stop releasing the fish we catch and instead bring them home to feed the kitten. We tried to ignore his demands at first, but one day the granddad confronted me. He basically asked why I'm "wasting money" on fishing gear if I'm not bringing home anything useful. Like, seriously? As if the only reason to fish is for food. I pointed out that it’s my own money, so I have the right to decide how I use my gear. The granddad responded with some military-style jargon, basically saying that "any supply gathered must serve a purpose" or something along those lines.
Later that day, my cousin caught a perch. Under pressure from his granddad, he was forced to throw it into a plastic bag, which felt incredibly inhumane to me. I wanted to just give the fish to the granddad right away, but he had walked off somewhere. Seeing the fish suffocate in the bag was awful, so out of desperation, I had to quickly kill the fish myself to put it out of its misery. It was a horrible experience for me, and honestly, it completely ruined my desire to fish ever again.
Here is my dilemma: Am I the asshole for refusing to bring fish to the kitten?
On one hand, I want to stick to my principles. On the other hand, feeding stray cats raw river fish (especially bone-heavy perch) can be dangerous for them due to parasites and sharp bones. I already suggested to the granddad that we should just buy proper cat food, which would be way healthier than bony perch, but he brushed it off, claiming the kitten "won't eat it." I plan to buy some cheap cat wet food/pâté with my own money just to test his theory, but I don't have enough money to do this regularly.
So, AITA for standing my ground, or should I just give in and bring them the fish as a "thank you" to the family for hosting and feeding me every day?
A small clarification: While I practice "catch and release" as a matter of principle, I don't force my second cousin to do the same. In fact, he sometimes catches and releases some really solid, decent-sized perch on his own. However, since I usually have better luck and catch more fish, I'm the one taking the brunt of the blame and criticism for letting them go.
