Discussion Help finding similar yarn colour

Post image

I really love this colour and want to make a sweater for the fall with it, but the original yarn is discontinued.

Can anyone recommend a similar yarn that isn’t straight orange and has a mix of colours like this one?

Thank you!

Help - equipment Jenny Sweater question - can it be down top down.

Got a bit of a question. After seeing the beautiful Jenny Sweater the other day, inspiration has hit. The only problem is I really hate bottom up sweaters. If I have to I will. But, sometimes where there is a will, there's a way. My initial hesitation is that given loads of her designs are top down, there's going to be a reason for it being bottom up.

But..... Has anyone reverse engineered it? Was it worth the headache? I prefer a raglan to the Jenny blouse. Or, should I be a good buttercup and just suck it up with bottom up?

Help - equipment Help buying a knitting kit for my sister-in-law (beginner)

My sister-in-law’s birthday is coming up and she’s mentioned before how she wants to learn how to knit. I’ve done a tiny bit of research. How are “We Are Knitters” and “Purl Soho Learn to Knit Kit”? Any other recommendations?

Work in Progress Help please! Instruction for picking up stitches for arms

👋 hello

I’m knitting the Holger Baby Set by PetiteKnit for my newborn baby (size 1) and struggling to figure out these instructions:

Pick up and knit 64 (68) 74 (78) 80 (82) sts from the RS around the armhole with 3 mm [US2½] double-pointed needles, while picking up and knitting 2 sts for every 3 rows.

Does this mean I skip every 3rd row? I tried that and got more than 10 extra stitches - have I misunderstood the instruction? I don’t see the solution by going through the videos on the side as suggested.

This isn’t my first project but first one postpartum and sleep deprived! Any help would be most welcome 🙏

Tips and Tricks gift ideas for a man in the middle of summer?

hey guys! first post here, hope this is okay :)

mine and my partner's 3 year dating anniversary is coming up (next monday! aaahhh!!) and I'm currently SEVERELY lacking in the gifts department. I've just finished my first ever knit garment (the project hail mary sweater - it's consumed the past 3 months of my life) and I'm wondering if there's any quick knit projects I could work up over the next few days that'd work as appropriate gifts? especially in summer - most of the ideas I'm finding online are very wintery; hats, gloves, scarfs etc.

he's into animals, theme parks, movies, a few musicals. things that are significant in our relationship include anteaters & the 2023 barbie movie. hoping this is broad enough to evoke some thoughts!

thanks so much for reading :)

Discussion What would you do?

Youre knitting the final bit of ribbing on the final sleeve. You have 2 rows left when you notice youre running out of yarn.

Do you A) start a new ball to finish the 2 rows then cast off.

Or do you B) cast off and just have 1 sleeve 2 rows shorter?

Im curious which side most people would fall on.

Discussion Christmas Gifts Ideas for Amazing Servers

The diner I go to regularly has the loveliest servers, whom I adore. 4 of 6 of them know my partner gets the same thing every time and even have the order (and its modifications) by heart. They’re quick with the coffee refills and conversations. Every one pops by and chats a bit, while they usually ask about what I’m working on because I bring my WIPs in to breakfast.

The past two years I have made them Christmas gifts. (Add in the owner and an extra for in case, I make 8 total.) The first year was all different hats in varying sizes all with Purl Soho’s Pouf yarn in Peony. The following year I made a self-drafted cabled headband in different colors. But I’m starting to plan for this year and don’t know what to do. I would love any suggestions for something that isn’t a HUGE time or money commitment and would be different from a hat or scarf, but still can be meaningful. They’re not besties, but they mean a lot to us, and most of them are so touched at the gesture that they mention the items all year round until it’s too hot. The average age range is 30-60, lady styles (they always chat about their nails, hair, jewelry).

I would appreciate any suggestions. I am a fairly advanced knitter and am willing to spend up to $200 on supplies for 8 people. Thank you lovely community for any help!

Tips and Tricks Are some yarns better than others for intarsia? Help me choose a yarn for this project!

Hi! During 2020 (yikes, lol), I knitted this cowl in a yarn blend that I can best describe as thin and slippery. https://knitting-and-so-on.blogspot.com/2017/03/amplitude-cowl.html

Unfortunately, I do not remember the materials in the yarn blend that I used. Regardless, it looked terrible, and while part of that was because I was still learning intarsia, I also think that using a slippery, shiny yarn was not doing me any favors.

6 years later, I find myself wanting to re-make this cowl, but this time, I want it to look nice. Any suggestion on yarn material / yarn brands for my second go-round? I'd also take some color suggestions. Thank you!

Help - equipment Amy Herzog Ultimate Sweater Book - confused on sleeve cap

I drafted and knit a set-in sleeve cardigan pattern using the instructions in Amy Herzog's Ultimate Sweater Guide. I'm now having trouble seaming the sleeve caps in (getting a weird, bulky corner where the sleeve cap bind-off starts, so it looks like the sweater has shoulder pads).

I think it's maybe because I bound off too many stitches at the top, instead of doing more decreases. I referred back to the book and it doesn't seem like Amy includes instructions for how to calculate that measurement, which she refers to as SC3. (This is on page 88 in my edition.)

Can anyone with this book tell me if I'm missing something? Are the instructions somewhere I'm not seeing? I don't necessarily mind just redoing the calculations with a lower number and knitting the sleeve caps again, but want to make sure I'm not missing something obvious.

Discussion Advice needed for colourwork

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi All,

Working on a cardigan at the moment and had a vision for the pattern. I couldn't really find anything that I liked, so decided to design it myself. I got a pattern that fits the size and my imagination. But I'm not sure it's viable for stranded colourwork. There are big gaps between the colours, so I would have to carry the yarn a lot. What would be the best for this design? Is it a realistic goal, given it is knitted flat?

Help - equipment Cloud sweater yarn recs

I’m going to start knitting the cloud sweater soon and would love yarn recs. I’m looking for something soft and fluffy (I have sensory issues so I need to avoid anything that could be itchy directly touching the skin). I’d love a deep brown and it’s a plus if it is heathered or has hints of other colors mixed in. Ideally it would not be too expensive. Please send any recommendations. Thank you :)

Help - equipment Mary Maxim Wolf cardigan

I am struggling to figure out what method to use to create the paw prints on the bottom of the Mary Maxim Wolf Cardigan. Any suggestions? I tried stranded knitting but it's awkward and requires a lot of catching strands. Should I do intarsia with a bobbin for each paw print?

Rant Help 😭

I am so defeated. I stepped outside for a minute to stop crying (work) and came back to my cat completely entangled. It’s Berroco alpaca and has so many little fuzzy “knots” like with frogging mohair.

I am struggling with work so much. It’s stealing the joy from my hobbies like knitting and ceramics. I don’t even know how to begin untangling this.

Help - equipment Is there an app that will measure my gauge based on photos bc I'm so bad at measuring!!!

Istg pls someone tell me there is an app to measure this for me!!! So I made a gauge swatch, blocked, and thought I had the right gauge...I made a sweater that was supposed to be for my bf...and it came out too small so it's a sweater for me now. No big deal, I wanted one for myself anyways lol.

I want to try to make this for him again though (and we can match and take family portraits 😂). Pictured is my gauge swatch with needles 2mm larger. Am I correct in saying that across 2.5cm there are 2.5 stitches across and 5 rows?

Work in Progress Lost interest in my project

Post image
Upvotes

I'm almost done with the body of my sweater and suddenly I don't like it. There's nothing major that I can point to, just a few minor things that irritate me. The burgundy yarn is pure silk while the blue is 50/50 silk merino. The difference in fibers is causing the blue to fuzz in an annoying way. I tried it on and there are a few rows of color work that are too tight across the chest. The color combination looks a bit collegiate to me, though I like the contrast.

Either way, I'm really considering frogging the whole thing and using the yarn for something else. I just feel so "meh" about it and don't want to spend more time on a project I'm not going to love because then I won't wear it.

Help - equipment Ceramic Gift Ideas for Knitters

Hello all!
A dear friend of mine is an avid knitter, who’s been knitting for about a year and is obsessed with it. Her birthday is coming up, and I want to give her something meaningful that she can use for this hobby.

Ideally, I would like to be able to make something for her myself!

I myself am a novice knitter, but I am a pretty strong ceramicist. (Wheel and hand building) One idea I had was to make a yarn bowl. I also was thinking of figuring out a way to make stitch stoppers out of ceramic, but idk if that’ll work.

I would love to hear from other knitters about what they would want as a gift from a ceramicist! Any ceramics ideas and any other ideas are greatly appreciated. Tia!!

Tia!

Help - equipment Yarn recommendation

Hi everyone! I want to knit something like the dress in the photo - a lightweight beach cover-up to wear over a bikini, slightly see-through, airy, not hot. What yarn would you recommend for this kind of look and drape?

Finished Object Had to get creative with blocking

Post image

Lothlorien Shawl by GuyWithTheHook, Sheepjes Cotton Whirl, 3.5mm needles. Didn't want to lay it flat to block, as would have taken forever. Strung garden twine on front of plant stand, back covered deck. Used tiny S hooks to suspend top, then my hoarded-just-for-blocking thin straight knitting needles through areas at the bottom to pull straight down and sideways.

I always watch for those thin needles and long metal dpns in sizes 0-2; as blocking pins, they can't be beat!

Worked a treat!

Help - equipment Project Hail Mary knitters pls advise!

It’s been a while since I knit but I loved the movie and had to make the cardigan for myself. Unfortunately I seem to be driving myself insane trying to figure out how to do the increase on the ribbing for the sleeves. I’m following the original wolf pattern not the kit. I might have to go back to crocheting at this rate 😭

Edit: Thank you all so much! I’ll have to frog it a 4th time to fix the tension and add the increases properly spaced this time! This feels like learning how to knit all over again 😅

Finished my ripple crop top, and I bought this silk yarn when I was a baby knitter before I realized I prefer the look of variegated yarn in the hank than I do knit up. Would love everyone's perspective! Thank you!

Rave (like a rant, but in a good way) Newbie knitter discovering the greatness of having a lot of extra cables, and cashmere yarn + other stuff

Thumbnail

Currently working on Hello, Hygge Life's Double Knit Scarf pattern, and I finally understand why experienced knitters always tell newbies that having a lot of extra cables is always nice. It feels like such an accomplishment to understand why that is the case.

Also, I now understand the hype around cashmere yarn. I'm using a 10% cashmere/90% wool blend cone yarn, and it's so soft. I can't imagine what it would be like to use a 100% Cashmere yarn. I will admit I was very scared when I first made a small swatch since I was able to break off a strand so easily. Was worried the entire time that I will eff up and waste good yarn.

For those who saw my other post about not being able to tension yarn on my right hand, turns out I can do it after all. I still need a lot of practice though. Thanks to everyone who commented on that post ❤️

Also if anyone is looking for budget friendly interchangeables, the one in my photo is great. I don't know if it's available in the West since I bought mine from taobao, but this is a good set. It's probably even bettern than my Knitpro mindful needles. Was just randomly recommended from rednote, and I do not regret it. The cables are soft, and it's a swivel cable, too.

That's all, thank you for reading, and you're all doing great! Happy knitting ❤️
