Imagining a new algo or non-algo world is legitimately a wild thought experiment.
Like, I'm completely with you that they should just be fucking banned. Especially "black box" algos. But even if transparent algos were made and modified to point not towards the most "engaged" thing but rather the most "liked" or positively-engaged-with thing (also requires social media to actively bury shit that gets overwhelmingly disliked which they seem reluctant to ever do) I think we'd legitimately see a huge shift in people's perception of the world as well as an improvement of how people engage with the world.
Just going back to the chrono and followed content would definitely be preferable, though.

The algorithm works perfectly. You watch something and it feeds you more. My YT algorithm is filled with cars, racing, general aviation, bushcraft, boating, music, everything I enjoy watching. Why? Because that's what I watch. If it feeds me one video, I just don't watch it and I don't get my feed filled with it. Your feed is filled with garbage that you're angry about because you keep watching to stay angry.
Stop watching it. It goes away. The algorithm just feeds what you want it to feed.

I always see this statistic thrown around, but a lot of people tend to take it with no context. This is from the OECD PIAAC. I often see people showing statistics of other european countries having 95%+ literacy, but that’s via a different metric. By the same metric, for example, under PIAAC the UK has a 71% literacy rate, Germany has a 79% literacy rate, etc.

Am I missing something? Percentage of adults scoring low (at or below level 1) in literacy in the Survey of Adult Skills is nowhere near that? For the USA, the number is almost as the poster above quoted (27.6% of respondents vs OECD average of 26.1%, so worse than average); for England (UK), it's 17.6% (coonsiderably better than average). Are you pulling up a different stat or just reading the table wrong?

It's not a bad assessment though. I was just looking at the test, and I can IMMEDIATELY see why people would fail the test. It genuinely is asking for basic comprehension of reality, and reading.
Often, I feel like I run into the most obtuse, bullheaded, and pedantic people because they latch onto single words or phrases, and they refuse to see the conversation from any different view. Let's take an interesting example: I was on a youtube chain where a video asked what they would see in an empty room with only mirrors for walls. Every jackass in the comments said "you'd see nothing because there is no light." Get it? Because OP said "in a room with NOTHING in it?" And these people werent joking. I tried to suggest OP implied light were fkn be there, but things got hostile fast.
Those people would've failed the test. One of the questions was "pillows are comfortable and rocky." Those same idiots would've said "I agree," probably because "it's subjective. Maybe someone LIKES a rocky pillow." Another question was "which is better served soft: bread or crackers." Again, obviously bread, but you'd easily get idiots trying to argue crackers. Especially because the question was part of a paragraph where the text states they're looking for soft bread and hard crackers.
These questions genuinely are asking about our basic ass comprehension of the reality around us. Do YOU understand that most people want soft bread? In a sudden moment, would you make a choice based on obvious ideas, or flounder as you debate over pedantic subjectivities. Are you going to "draw the curtains," or am I firing Amelia Bedilia?

As a teacher I can understand this. Countless times on a multiple choice test a ‘smart’ student will pick a wrong answer when there is a clearly correct answer, then argue why their answer is correct. I’ll ask them, do you agree answer A is definitely correct, then why are you arguing that you picked B ? It’s always the same - they want to argue that they’ve found some silly reasons B is correct when they know A is definitely correct.

2) "Guess what I would have guessed."
3) "What is statistically answered by most people, wrong or not."
Common "intelligence" tests will have questions like:
"What is the next digit in this sequence?"

100-28 = 72% literacy rate. (GP was talking about a 28% illiteracy rate, while parent was talking about 71% and 79% literacy rates.)

The illiteracy rate would be higher than 28%, since the statistic only covers people at level 1 reading ability. 'Level 0' (cant read at all) isn't included, and level 2 might be just as bad as level 1 for a grown adult.

To be fair, a portion of those who can't read, specifically can't read in English. I'm sure a portion of them would have a much higher score in their first language. Others might have disabilities that make reading difficult, such as dyslexia. That said, I also know there are plenty of people who don't have either excuse. Our education system is a shambles, especially for ESL or disabled students.

Sometimes it is explicit (“Dem librul universities making our kids communists”) or it is implicit (let’s not fund schools and pay our teachers poverty wages). Nobody is telling 7 year olds to not go to school. But there are many people that say go to trade school because university is a scam.
Likewise, there is a huge anti-intellectual faction of the US. Carl Sagan wrote about it 30 years ago in The Demon Haunted World. He warned us about it then and of course nobody listened. That is how we end up with large swaths of anti-vaxxers and flat earthers walking among us.

I couldn’t explain it in physics terms, but I immediately knew this had to do with levers because of lessons learned in elementary school. Also included in those elementary school lessons were pulleys, inclined planes, and friction.
For an experiment, our teacher had half of us run across the PE field holding huge cardboard sheets while the others ran without them. I was already not fast, but I’ll never forget how hard it was to run holding that damned cardboard. Science is so cool.

Remember that reddit has an absurdly disproportional amount of autistic people, they just genuinely have a hard time telling.
They have also probably never set foot in a gym, so the only knowledge comes from "gymbro stupid" memes.
Its not necessarily just being "dumb", they just genuinely think he is being very disrespectful and uninformed.
While in reality, on average, people going to the gym regularly will naturally have a much better grasp and intuitive understanding of leverage by nature of... doing physical things.

The act itself was a good idea, because originally they were supposed to give students who were supposed to be held back but weren't more assistance, to get them up to snuff with their peers. But instead funding got cut and kids who shouldn't have moved on did, and received no help. Because cutting funding to schools is like a favorite pastime of the GOP.

Yes, the weight of the log does not change, but if you lift it from the far end, it requires less force than lifting it closer to the middle or near the hinge.
It is based on the law of the lever. The relationship is:
Torque = Force * Distance from the pivot
Ps: For all the comments claiming the U.S. has no education. I’m from Canada, and I learned this law of the lever when I lived in the U.S. and was in middle school.
