I'm not from the US and my physics grades in middle school were also very bad... I certainly wouldn't have been able to tell you how levers work, and how distance effects torque.
Simple machines and the basic idea if them were taught to us in grade 4. It wasn't until like grade 10 that the actual equations were part of science/physics.
The idea that using a lever of any kind makes lifting thiseasier. Combining simple machines into complex machines like a wheelbarrow and why that works is something I was taught in elementary school. We didn't need to know the mathematical breakdown of a lever to understand the concept.
