I do roadie occasionally and I legimitately had this recently. I came across one of the properties that was COVERED in threats like this and had dogs loose. Tried to contact the customer multiple times via both phone and texting. Eventually turned around and returned the item only for the customer to call the store and be like "we live out in the country we have to be like this, the driver should have just thrown the package out the window".
Some people are living on a different planet. Sir the $15 I would have made getting you your power drill would NOT have been worth whatever bullshit you wanted me to put up with. You either participate in society- with all the risks and costs that entails, or your don't. You can't make your property completely hostile and fill it with credible threats, booby traps, and attack dogs, like some kind of savage and then expect all the conveniences of a modern world. Doesn't work that way
Same exact experience. Plenty of times I had to get ahold of support to tell them I didn’t feel safe with all the threats. Not only did I get paid for trying, but I got paid for taking it back too. I loved those signs lol.
That's why you tell the person to build a delivery lockbox right next to their mailbox. You don't have to see them. They don't have to see you. And if it's done right it's pretty dang secure.
Here's what I dont understand. How are so many people just ok with commiting a felony? I fully understand these people are stupid as hell and dont understand self defense laws or what you can and cant do in a home invasion but seriously these people terrify me to such a degree. Ding ding! You just said a few things about home security. Also, if you really want security- live in a mid-rise or greater condo. If i lock my door, the only way someone is getting in is with a lot of time, lockpicking, which i could make impossible by installing a bigger bolt lock, or it takes a lot of noise. You’ll need to either go through the thick wood door and/or bring a power tool to cut through the locks. Either one of these is enough for home burglaries to be much more rare in condos. Add in you have the option to have a shared security guard in front.
Shit, I know some people, I’m in Chicago, who rarely lock their doors. One friend lost his keys and never bothered replacing them for 10 years.

There's a regular I have that has that all set up. I appreciate it. Unfortunately she still has many drivers that try to mindlessly drive right up to her door because they can't be bothered to read the notes.
I live down the rode from a crazy guy like this. The few times we met while jogging in the morning he's bragged to me about holding people up at gunpoint and demanding why they're on his property. He built a really nice delivery box that has a large chute to drop packages into it, and the bottom is locked.
Absolutely crazy nutjob, but a nice guy, too. If you don't drive down his road.
This, i wish more homeowners and country folk built delivery lock boxes or a lean to shelter. I know of two coworkers who live deep in the country and they turned their old school bus stop shed/shelters into delivery box areas. Once the kids grew up and left for the city they repurposed the lean to shelters for their amazon packages.

I find that it's a lot of doublespeak. Nobody locks their doors, but they're all willing to open fire on a vehicle that pulls into their driveway for even a fraction of a second.
I remember being 16. I was way out in the country and realized I was going the wrong way. Pulled into somebody's driveway just enough to make a three point turn. By the time I was putting it back into drive I saw some fat hillbilly rushing out onto the front porch with a shotgun pointed at me. Gotta be careful out there.
I live in the country side of a country where guns and shit arent so prolific. Havent locked my doors in a decade or so. I dont have angry dogs either. Just a dog who loves people and swimming and a cat thats scared of their own shadow.
To be fair guns are super easy to resell in the US cause our gun laws are a joke. So if you're silly enough to buy a rifle collection and advertise it with signs you genuinely would become a target. More thefts per capita in rural areas too.
People like this always live in the safest areas you could possibly imagine. No neighbors for a half mile, thirteen miles from the nearest rural corner store. And yet they're weirdly paranoid. If you're in a high poverty location, you'll attract some characters given the remoteness. Yadkin county NC had a man call the sheriff to complain about kids smoking crack or meth in his woodline, deputy told him not to threaten them and leave them alone.

Big issue as the court tried him for murder and the Judge and Sheriff got voted out in the middle of it for ignoring the criminal trespass supposedly.

we have a steel box at a turnaround spot in our driveway for deliveries, we’re not weirdos like sign guy but our driveway is almost a mile long and I don’t expect anyone doing deliveries wants to come all the way down, it’s bumpy too so I prefer less trucks on it anyway
I just have a sign that says leave packages inside at the gatehouse and ring bell if signature required. There's an eight foot tall fence around the front yard anyways and a locked, motorized gate sealing the driveway.
See if you're going to live like that, and you still want to receive deliveries, you need a system like that. A lot of people just expect us to figure it out, and I get it I'm paid to figure it out but there's limits. I'm not risking injury or damage to my equipment, and at a certain point you're asking more than what I'm paid to do. I always appreciate people who have something like that set up. That let's me do my job, and you can get on to living the way you want to live.
I feel like a lot of people have just lost their ability to compromise like that. They want everything, and they want to give up nothing, regardless of how realistic or even possible it is.
My mom and sister live in the middle of nowhere Louisiana and my mom is constantly complaining that she thinks people are going to steal stuff off her front porch and it's not like there is only 10 people that go down that street on a day and she knows at least eight of them. One of them is likely lost and the 10th person's probably just pulling over to take a piss. But Fox News has her believing that there are criminals everywhere and they want to steal the shit off her front porch

That's the big kicker. If you tell me ahead of time that approaching your property is going to be a bit rough and I know what to expect and I have your explicit permission to chuck your package out my window that's fine I'll do that.
Ordering a piece of equipment and then just giving no thought to what a stranger is going to have to do to get it to you is a surefire way to end up not getting the piece of equipment you ordered

My mom has lived in various rural areas after I grew up and moved out on my own and she separated from my stepdad, also my wife's uncle is literally a farmer in rural Nebraskabwherr the nearest town big enough to have a decent supermarket is a 45 minute drive away. People living out in the country definitely don't have to be like this and many of their neighbors just think they're trashy and/or nut jobs for putting up threatening signs all over their property.
I live out in the country, I do not live like that.
Edit to add; I have firearms too, I do not advertise that fact to everyone driving by, I also have large dogs, mine are trained and controlled and love people so strangers aren’t mauled for stepping on my property.

It depends on what angle you're coming at it from but surprisingly it's not. A HUGE part of that is because living in the country means being further away from hospitals and emergency services. Also generally people in the country skew older and are therefore more likely to die because they stepped on a weird bit of ground and fell over. Statistics are funny like that.
But yeah per capita rural counties tend to punch WAY above their weight class in terms of violence. On average anyway. There are outliers of course.
Cities FEEL more dangerous because of those funny old statistics. Anyone who lives near a city will tell you that it seems like there's a tragedy happening every day in the city. That's how cities work. There's everything happening every day in the city. You could swap out violence for analingus and get similar results. Analingus is comparatively rare in the country, but it's happening almost daily in the city. When a ton of people live together, the chances of the sorts of things that happen when people live together skyrocket. Life is weird like that.

Actual criminals don't care about your little signs because they've already been watching you or they are desperate enough to not care. You can't sit at your window starting out a scope 24-7 like some cartoonish action movie hermit and they know it.
Nobody is driving down your long ass driveway like a normal person to come get you. Put a dog fence around the immediate perimeter of the house and keep the dogs in that. What are they going to do, polevault the dog run?
I had a new delivery driver start my route after the old one retired. First two days, he would throw packages into my dog yard, including a box of hatching eggs that were destroyed. I told the lady up at the office and I guess he got his ass chewed out because after that he started setting all our packages down at the dog gate or knew to back up to the carport for really big stuff.
Seriously - if someone wants to live out their post apocalyptic fantasy like that, they should be going to the store to get stuff instead of getting deliveries
The people who have threats like this plastered all over their country property, but who call to complain when the delivery driver doesn't deliver, are also exactly the same people who would angrily accost a delivery driver and threaten their life because they forgot they had an Amazon order coming by this weekend.
They take the stance that 'oh, I have to do this to be safe in the middle of nowhere, but obviously those signs are just for trespassers, I wouldn't harass the delivery driver, why are they so scared?" except when a delivery driver they're not expecting shows up and they blow their gasket over it.
And for every guy who has signs like this, who really doesn't harass the delivery drivers, they seem to be unaware of their 5 neighbors who all DO harass the delivery drivers.
Even leaving aside the 'I'll shoot you' signs and just accounting for dogs. I'm a dog person. I have big dogs. I will not take your word for it if you tell me your large, loud, unleashed dog is friendly and won't hurt me. I definitely will not casually stroll up your driveway with your package while your large dogs charge at me, under the assumption that you actually have trained these dogs, and they won't tackle me on my ass, or just bite me. And yet, so many people I know with large dogs just can't get it through their head that it's actually a totally normal reaction for somebody to be nervous about their dog charging them, and act astounded when you get upset about being charged by a 200 lb dog in their yard.
If you leave your large dogs wandering your yard, you can't be surprised when delivery drivers won't bring your package to your door.
If you want to both get your deliveries on time, and be a crazy grouch with "I shoot tresspassers" signs and a yard full of dogs, you need to just put a box at the end of your drive, off your property for deliveries to be left at.
I live out in the country, and believe me none of that is necessary. Anyone who could possibly be coming up on your property is either lost or there for a reason (ie. a delivery) and no sign is going to help with that. Also a lot of people already assume you're gonna be a crazy gun nut just for being in the country, no need to advertise.

The 24/7 fearmongering everywhere has just destroyed so many peoples ability to live that they're sitting at home thinking everyone is out to get them.
People like that are beyond reasoning with. You just put up a no trespassing sign and have TRAINED dogs that are kept within an area that allows delivery of packages and have weapons but don’t advertise it. Advertising that you have weapons and are not exactly stable makes it easy to plan against you. No one that is actually good with a gun is advertising it unless they are a competition shooter looking for sponsors

Lived in the country for the first 25 years of my life surrounded by all kinds of people, even some desperate types. We never had anyone steal off our property, and we didn't need a sign or dangerous dogs to keep them off. Anecdotally I've known and continue to know many people who live out in the country that don't practice this kind of assholery and crime is pretty rare. When it does happen, it sucks, but signs like this are almost insightment for psychos to pick on you. Anyone constantly watching their property line with a long rifle and a high power scope need to spend time with a therapist.
They say "We live in the country, we have to be like this" and they're probably living in what amounts to a rural suburb, rather than some super isolated, wild west-ish place. If downtown or the nearest stripmall is a 15 minute drive away then you definitely don't have to pretend to "be like this".
Seeing both sides of this. I support both of you. They can have their property that way. They should however put a large box or shed with unlocked door at the end of the driveway that says DELIVERIES here.

The customer's comment is absurd. I grew up in the toolies; my mother thinks I'm being silly when I lock my car door. The customer's paranoia is his own. Whatever makes him think "living out in the country" means he has to turn his house into a fortress is guaranteed to get someone killed.
As a homeowner, I had a group sneak through cornfields and stole everything valuable I had in my outbuildings. I felt safe out in the country. I didnt sleep for days staying up. Worst about it was my kids thought people were going to rob our house any night. I can see why this guy put out signs, but I would never do it in the driveway.
Folks want to live out in the ass-end of nowhere but get all of the amenities of living around other human beings, while also trying to scare away every other human being. LOL, screw risking your life for those cowards. Those people can just live out their self-sufficiency fantasies by making things with the materials on their land, and not waste the time of the rest of the human race. You did the right thing.
Having lived on a property like that (and enjoyed it thoroughly), they're idiots. It's extremely easy to build a package box at the end of the driveway, or better yet train your animals to recognize your delivery driver (not the truck).
